Unusual Chromosome Configurations: Evaluation Of Sex Univalent And Trivalent Chromosome Models, Ashley B. Borseth Jan 2023

Unusual Chromosome Configurations: Evaluation Of Sex Univalent And Trivalent Chromosome Models, Ashley B. Borseth

Master’s Theses

Aneuploidy, or abnormal number of chromosomes in a haploid set, in XY/XX organisms has consequences that can impede physical and cognitive development. To prevent aneuploidy, cellular division relies on the correct position of paired chromosomes and subsequent segregation in the meiotic program. If connections between paired chromosomes sever or errors in chromosome contraction towards spindle poles arise, aneuploidy occurs. Many arthropod species have chromosomes that naturally do not pair, or that pair differently than typical autosomes. Through the evaluation of such systems, novel insights into chromosomal coordination and positioning may be revealed. The objective of this study is twofold: (1) …

Relationships Between Behavior, Energy Metabolites, And Corticosterone In Black-Legged Kittiwake (Rissa Tridactyla) Nestlings, Sierra Pete Jan 2023

Relationships Between Behavior, Energy Metabolites, And Corticosterone In Black-Legged Kittiwake (Rissa Tridactyla) Nestlings, Sierra Pete

Master’s Theses

Birds can cope with energy-shifting challenges by redirecting energy and behavior to maintain energetic homeostasis. Nestlings allocate energy to support their rapid growth and developmental period; thus, their challenges and the subsequent energetic demands can be much different than an adult. At a baseline level, energy is constantly shifting in response to regularly occurring challenges; however, more substantial challenges can initiate the production of glucocorticoid hormones. In birds, the main glucocorticoid is corticosterone. Corticosterone is believed to aid in energy homeostasis by redirecting energy metabolite mobilization. Energy metabolites are intermediaries or end products of cellular metabolism, thus, metabolites like glucose …

Temperature-Dependent Diffusion In Block Copolymer Organogels, Ridwana Bashar Jan 2023

Temperature-Dependent Diffusion In Block Copolymer Organogels, Ridwana Bashar

Master’s Theses

Organogels are often considered for transport-based applications such as transdermal drug delivery vehicles and gel actuators due to their unique properties. Recent consideration of styrenic block copolymer based organogels’ application in transdermal drug delivery requires an extensive investigation of drug diffusion behavior through these gels to assess their applicability. Temperature is a major influencing parameter on diffusion. The goal of this research is to better understand the impact of temperature on diffusion in styrenic triblock copolymer organogels. To accomplish this goal, we focused on three specific objectives: (i) accurately measure the diffusivities of a solute – AOT reverse micelles – …

Genetic Substrates Of The Initial Subjective Rewarding Effects Of Alcohol In Mice, Holly Jones Jan 2023

Genetic Substrates Of The Initial Subjective Rewarding Effects Of Alcohol In Mice, Holly Jones

Master’s Theses

Susceptibility to alcohol use disorders (AUDs) arises from a complex interplay of genetics and environmental experiences. While the initial subjective response predicts susceptibility to AUD, genetic variation is responsible for about 50% of an individual's risk. This study used a single-exposure conditioned place preference paradigm (SE-CPP) to identify phenotypic and genetic correlates of the initial subjective rewarding effects of alcohol (EtOH) in diversity outbred (DO) mice. We assessed the relationship between SE-CPP and anxiety-like behaviors using a marble burying test and light-dark box test. Ninety-six male and female diversity outbred mice were tested in a Marble Burying test at 7-8 …

Enhancing Resilience In Classrooms, Elizabeth Doll, Samuel Y. Song Jan 2023

Enhancing Resilience In Classrooms, Elizabeth Doll, Samuel Y. Song

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Schools have historically been the great equalizer in American communities—the “ticket out” for youth struggling to overcome adversity and poverty (Pianta & Walsh, 1998). For children who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century schools were safe havens where they learned English received public health services and became literate and employable (Fagan, 2000; Goldstein, 2014). As each wave of homesteaders moved west across the country schools popped up alongside the newly broken sod. Universal access to public education is a defining feature of the North American society and schools are fertile settings for promoting youth’s …

The Effect Of Lps On Phosphorylation Of Akt Signaling In Schwann Cells, Nicholas Wilde, Angela Asirvatham Jan 2023

The Effect Of Lps On Phosphorylation Of Akt Signaling In Schwann Cells, Nicholas Wilde, Angela Asirvatham

SURF Posters 2023

Schwann cells (SCs) are cells in the peripheral nervous system that may play a significant role in neuronal repair after an injury, however, little is known about their mechanisms on how they do so. In the lab, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial endotoxin, is used to stimulate an injury while forskolin, a growth hormone, is used to activate the cAMP pathway. In this experiment, the cAMP pathway, which is involved in many cellular processes, and protein kinase b (AKT), a cell survival signal, where analyzed in different LPS doses (0.1, 1, and 10 µg/mL) and over different time periods (3-,6-,12-, and …

Badges And Blush: Gender Expression In Policework, Aubrey Powell Jan 2023

Badges And Blush: Gender Expression In Policework, Aubrey Powell

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Gender roles are a social construct ingrained in American culture. Stemming from this problem is the femininity versus competency bind. This means that women in the workplace are seen as either feminine or competent, but never both. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the perceived deficit is due to gender expression or biological sex. Additionally, the project examined the masculine of policework and the neutral profession of teaching. Participants were assigned to one of four conditions (feminine woman, masculine woman, feminine man, and masculine man) in which they rated a potential hire for a police precinct or …

Nicotine And E-Cigarette Effect On Maximal Metabolic Rate (Mmr) In Procambarus Clarkii, Nathan Cuttica Jan 2023

Nicotine And E-Cigarette Effect On Maximal Metabolic Rate (Mmr) In Procambarus Clarkii, Nathan Cuttica

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The use of electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes or vapes, has increased exponentially in recent years despite the lack of research into potentially negative physiological effects. The rise in e-cigarette use is likely due to the overwhelming evidence regarding the addictive properties of nicotine and the damage caused by traditional tobacco cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes, however, still contain nicotine and are associated with a rise in nicotine-related intoxications (Belkoniene et al., 2019). There are nicotine-free e-cigarette options, which are gaining popularity, but it is unknown if they carry similar or other negative physiological effects. Studies involving e-cigarettes containing nicotine …

The Effects Of Sex On Zebrafish Bone Metabolism, Simon Bagatto Jan 2023

The Effects Of Sex On Zebrafish Bone Metabolism, Simon Bagatto

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

I investigated the effects of diet and sex on zebrafish bone metabolism. Zebrafish were subjected to either a high-calorie or low-calorie diet over a five-week period. After this diet, zebrafish scales were used to measure alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) enzyme activity with a fluorescent substrate. The enzyme activities were markers of the osteoblasts (ALP) and the osteoclasts (TRAP). These data were compared among sex and diet of the zebrafish using a repeated measures ANOVA statistical test. I also measured the number of resorption lacunae per scale (another indicator of osteoclast activity). The results showed higher TRAP …

Mystic Writers: Religion From A Perspective Of Gender In The Poetry Of St. Teresa Of Avila And St. John Of The Cross, Megan Swope Jan 2023

Mystic Writers: Religion From A Perspective Of Gender In The Poetry Of St. Teresa Of Avila And St. John Of The Cross, Megan Swope

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Religion and the way in which people approach it is a complicated topic. There are a multitude of ways in which humans experience religion in their lives. Christian mysticism is a type of thought within the Christian religion, and it is evident in the works of two Spanish writers – Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. These two saints are good examples to study because, as writers and mystics, they worked closely together in the Spanish Catholic Church and had similar religious beliefs. Much of their writings tie into the same Biblical ideas, while their poetry demonstrates a …

Amphisbaenian Head Movement And Burrowing Forces In Damp Granular Media, Jacob Newell Jan 2023

Amphisbaenian Head Movement And Burrowing Forces In Damp Granular Media, Jacob Newell

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Damp granular media is a difficult environment to study because it is both practically complex and it lacks equations which fully describe its behavior. In this study, an oscillatory lateral head movement and its effects while penetrating damp granular media were tested using a robophysical model. This experimental research was inspired by the burrowing behavior of the clade Amphisbaenia, a group of usually limbless squamates that employ a variety of different burrowing behaviors, but it can apply to a wide range of burrowers. This research could help with both human burrowing technologies and the further investigation of animal behaviors.

The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) independently provides hundreds of standards ranging through dozens of different fields, providing standards applying to topics from quality management to material composition. Not much is readily available on the topics of ISO 9001, which outlines quality management systems (QMS) ISO 14001, which details environmental management systems (EMS), and their relation to ISO 18457, which explains what composes a biomimetic material or product. A literature review was conducted to gather …

Buoyancy And Emergence In Elymus Species, Sandor Jakab Jan 2023

Buoyancy And Emergence In Elymus Species, Sandor Jakab

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

It is important that native plants are able to successfully emerge in wetlands because they play an important role in maintaining diversity. The relationship between seed buoyancy and seedling emergence was analyzed for three wetland species of the same genus: Elymus canadensis (FACU), Elymus macgregorii (FACW), and Elymus virginicus (FACW). E. macgregorii seemed to be the most buoyant, and E. virginicus and E. canadensis demonstrated very similar, less buoyant levels. Based on the idea that more buoyant seeds will be deposited at a shallow depth, and less buoyant seeds will be deposited at a deeper soil level, a relationship between …

Comparison Of Bone Robustness Between Fore- And Hindlimb In Neonatal And Infant Galago, Jeremy Busken Jan 2023

Comparison Of Bone Robustness Between Fore- And Hindlimb In Neonatal And Infant Galago, Jeremy Busken

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

According to Wolff’s law, bone is constantly subject to change based on loading patterns (Ruff et al., 2006). Those subjected to greater stress become more robust by increasing bone mineral density and often changing geometric properties. Previous studies of primate anatomy have found significant differences in bone robustness between the fore- and hindlimbs in adult leaping primates. Because leaping primates, such as Galago senegalensis and Galago moholi, subject their hindlimbs to much greater stress, this difference in robustness may come as a result of bone functional adaptation/Wolff’s law. This study sought to investigate this possibility by testing neonatal and infant …

Finding An Accurate Method To Measure Pollinator Visitation Rates, Claire Struhsaker Jan 2023

Finding An Accurate Method To Measure Pollinator Visitation Rates, Claire Struhsaker

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Pollinator visitation rates are a helpful way to monitor the health of ecosystems; however, there lacks a standardized method for obtaining these rates. The pollinator visitation rates for five plant species were collected and the relationship between the standard error of these rates and the time interval was determined. Monarda, Echinacea purpurea, Pycnanthemum muticum, and Baptisia alba all exhibit more accurate pollinator visitation rates as the time interval increased. Trifolium repens exhibited less accurate pollinator visitation rates as the time interval increased.

Mammalian Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase: Employing Transient State Kinetic Methods To Determine Catalytic And Inhibitory Mechanisms, Dariush Forouzesh Jan 2023

Mammalian Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase: Employing Transient State Kinetic Methods To Determine Catalytic And Inhibitory Mechanisms, Dariush Forouzesh

Dissertations

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) catalyzes the two-electron reduction of pyrimidine bases uracil and thymine as the first step in pyrimidine catabolism. The enzyme achieves this simple chemistry using a complex cofactor set including two flavins and four Fe4S4 centers. The flavins, FAD and FMN, interact with respective NADPH and pyrimidine substrates and the iron-sulfur centers form an electron transfer wire that links the two active sites that are separated by 56 Å. DPD accepts the common antineoplastic agent 5-fluorouracil (5FU) as a substrate and so undermines the establishment of efficacious toxicity. Though studied for multiple decades, a precise description of the …
