Temperate deciduous forests are naturally among the most bio-diverse habitats worldwide. The Lenape are among several indigenous cultures with deep ancestral ties to the Eastern Woodlands.
Expectile Neural Networks For Genetic Data Analysis Of Complex Diseases, Jinghang Lin, Xiaoran Tong, Chenxi Li, Qing Lu
Expectile Neural Networks For Genetic Data Analysis Of Complex Diseases, Jinghang Lin, Xiaoran Tong, Chenxi Li, Qing Lu
Biostatistics Faculty Publications
The genetic etiologies of common diseases are highly complex and heterogeneous. Classic methods, such as linear regression, have successfully identified numerous variants associated with complex diseases. Nonetheless, for most diseases, the identified variants only account for a small proportion of heritability. Challenges remain to discover additional variants contributing to complex diseases. Expectile regression is a generalization of linear regression and provides complete information on the conditional distribution of a phenotype of interest. While expectile regression has many nice properties, it has rarely been used in genetic research. In this paper, we develop an expectile neural network (ENN) method for genetic …
Ascophyllum Nodosum Seaweed Extract Application As A Possible Mechanism For Mitigating Salt Stress In Soybeans (Glycine Max), Elena Hoang
Honors Program Theses
Soil salinity, an abiotic stressor associated with climate change effects, inhibits the normal growth and development of sensitive crop species. The excessive accumulation of salt ions in plant tissue induces oxidative stress, which is characterized by an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) damaging plant organelles and disrupting normal metabolic functions. Seaweed extracts (SWE) may be a solution for mitigating the effects of salt stress on crop yield and quality, as they introduce bioactive ingredients that are able to regulate gene expression and enhance natural physiological processes in plants. However, the positive benefits of SWE applications differ between plant …

Producing Grnas For Use In Crispr-Cas9 Dna Editing Applications Via In Vivo T7 Rna Polymerase Transcription In Escherichia Coli., Christian A. Santiago
Honors Program Theses
The development of the CRISPR-Cas9 system is widely considered to be a breakthrough advancement in gene editing. Compared to traditional technologies, CRISPR is generally regarded as the most accessible, effective, and precise tool for inducing stable and inheritable gene edits in vivo. The CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing complex relies on the complementary binding of guide RNAs to specifically target a DNA sequence for endonuclease cleavage and mutagenesis. The production of gRNAs for use in CRISPR applications can become exceedingly complex and costly, as in vivo methodologies generally require the use of RNA polymerases that interfere with gRNA sequence identity and in …
Addressing The Opioid Crisis In The United States And Modeling Its Proposed Interventions, Liza Eubanks
Addressing The Opioid Crisis In The United States And Modeling Its Proposed Interventions, Liza Eubanks
Honors Program Theses
A novel application of compartmental modeling is used to quantitatively study the impact of call centers on influencing an individual’s mindset as they begin or attempt to recover from opioid addiction. The opioid epidemic in the United States has affected millions of Americans, especially in West Virginia. This project studies the effectiveness of call centers in increasing the rate of recovery from opioid abuse. An active response is characterized by an open mindset and acceptance of help from others, while a passive response is defined by a closed mindset and an unwillingness to believe in the real possibility of recovery. …
Postcolonial Possibilities Of Sociological Theory, Sanjula Rajat
Postcolonial Possibilities Of Sociological Theory, Sanjula Rajat
Honors Program Theses
This project seeks to bring postcolonial theory and sociological theory into productive conversation in order to craft a "postcolonial sociology".The discipline of sociology emerged within (and often in service of) Western empire, while postcolonial theory has its origins in anti-colonial struggle. Sociological theory has since developed beyond its narrow imperial focus, but the imperial context of its origins persist in the sociological canon and epistemic approaches. Bringing in a postcolonial critique allows for certain imperial assumptions of the discipline to be brought into question in order to develop a sociology that takes more seriously the role of colonialism as a …
The Antibacterial Efficacy Of Silver (I) Cyanoximates Against Streptococcus Mutans Ua159 Biofilm Growth And Infection In Galleria Mellonella Larvae, Jill Hughes
Honors Program Theses
Streptococcus mutans is the known etiological agent of dental caries. S. mutans’ virulence factors, namely biofilm formation and lactic acid fermentation, contribute to its pathogenic behavior within the oral cavity. Biofilms are thick, antibiotically resistant communities of bacteria that are much more difficult to treat than planktonic or free-floating bacteria. Continued misuse of antibiotics against dynamic communities, like biofilms, has led to increased research on non-antibiotic alternatives. Amongst these alternatives, there are silver and silver-based compounds. Silver is commonly incorporated into medicine due to its inhibitory and bactericidal effects and antibacterial properties. Silver (I) cyanoximates have demonstrated promising antibacterial activity …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Sorbicillinoids, Noah Devolve
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Sorbicillinoids, Noah Devolve
Honors Program Theses
Sorbicillinoids are a rich family of natural products that have intrigued and inspired scientists since their initial discovery in 1948. A recent report by Zhang et al. detailed the discovery of several new monomeric sorbicillinoids that are particularly interesting as they show nitric oxide (NO) inhibition in RAW264.7 monocyte cell assays and thus possess potential as anti-inflammatory agents. Based on this information, obtaining more of these novel compounds and establishing a preliminary structure activity relationship (SAR) could be achieved by modulating the substitution pattern on the molecules’ benzene ring and varying the alkyl chain length. To this end, a flexible …
Land Back And Justice: Examining Indigenous Land And Water Rights In The United States, Matthew Deveaux
Land Back And Justice: Examining Indigenous Land And Water Rights In The United States, Matthew Deveaux
Honors Program Theses
This paper evaluates U.S. policies regarding Indigenous land and water rights in the context of changing global climate conditions and a societal shift towards reparative justice models. Theories from the literature on Indigenous sovereignty and environmental protection at large, as well as the literature on reparative justice and post-colonial theory, are combined with case studies of environmental personhood in Ecuador and New Zealand to examine how a policy model could be created for the U.S. that strengthens Indigenous rights. It is argued that this colonial capitalist process has resulted in oppressive policies that harm Indigenous populations and negatively impact the …
Social Exclusion And Negative Affect: The Impact Of Mentalized Affectivity, Anna Voicu
Social Exclusion And Negative Affect: The Impact Of Mentalized Affectivity, Anna Voicu
Honors Program Theses
Social exclusion has been widely associated with feelings of anxiety, depressed mood, anger, and hostility. Previous literature indicates that mentalized affectivity (MA), a sophisticated form of emotional regulation, may be effective in mitigating emotional experience after social exclusion. In light of this research, our study sought to examine the predictive value of mentalized affectivity and inclusion/exclusion on emotion. Participants (N = 170) completed measures of mentalized affectivity and positive and negative affect, in addition to playing a virtual ball-tossing game that would randomly assign them to an inclusion or exclusion condition. Multiple regression analyses revealed that mentalized affectivity predicted both …
Feminist Pedagogy In Stem: The Intersection Of Stem Pedagogy And Feminist Theory, Lesley Ann Giddings, Candice Price
Feminist Pedagogy In Stem: The Intersection Of Stem Pedagogy And Feminist Theory, Lesley Ann Giddings, Candice Price
Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education aims to cultivate the capacity for innovation and real-world problem-solving (Marrero et al., 2014). However, STEM pedagogy has not historically aligned with this goal, often failing to teach students the necessary skills and mindset for creative problem-solving (Stehle & Peters-Burton, 2019). Traditional STEM pedagogical methods, such as rote and lecture-based learning, are based on the teacher being the dominant source of knowledge and students being the passive receivers (Achuonye, 2015; Khalaf & Mohammed Zin, 2018). These methods lack student support, collaboration, active learning, and real-world contexts (Gasiewski et al., 2012). Furthermore, the exclusion …
Creating Meaningful Connections With The Electr Eating Meaningful Connections With The Electron Transport Chain Beyond A Virtual Classroom, Lesley Ann Giddings
Creating Meaningful Connections With The Electr Eating Meaningful Connections With The Electron Transport Chain Beyond A Virtual Classroom, Lesley Ann Giddings
Chemistry: Faculty Publications
At the center of feminist pedagogy is community. Creating community within the classroom and between the class and local communities increases student engagement and access to knowledge. Communities can be a source of solidarity and further decenter authority in the classroom, empowering students, teachers, and the surrounding community to be co-learners. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, remote teaching posed challenges to student engagement. Here, I describe an assignment used to build an inclusive community of co-learners within a virtual biochemistry class and our local communities. Oxidative phosphorylation is a cellular process used to create energy that depends on the electron transport …

Extradition In Post-Roe America, Alejandra L. Caraballo, Cynthia Conti-Cook, Yveka Pierre, Michelle Mcgrath, Hillary Aarons
City University of New York Law Review
The United States is on the brink of a crisis brought on by the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Eliminating the constitutional right to abortion will create a massive discordance in the criminal laws between states not seen since before the Civil War. This discordance in criminal laws will create tension between states that criminalize abortion and those that protect it as a state constitutional right. States such as Connecticut are already passing shield laws for abortion access and gender affirming care, while states such as Louisiana are proposing to classify abortion as …
Reducing Multigenerational Poverty In New York Through Sentencing Reform, Jared Trujillo
Reducing Multigenerational Poverty In New York Through Sentencing Reform, Jared Trujillo
City University of New York Law Review
The relationship between incarceration and poverty is circular, cyclical, and symbiotic – poverty is a cause of incarceration, and incarceration causes poverty. In the 1970’s and 1990’s, New York led the country in enacting draconian sentencing laws that required judges to sentence children and adults to longer periods of incarceration, while also reducing the ability of incarcerated people to earn time off of their sentences for participation in rehabilitative, vocational, and educational programming. For the past half century, these harsh sentencing laws have been the primary driver of mass incarceration in New York. As a result, generations of families with …

Associations Of Stress, Health Behaviors, And Obesity Among African American Immigrants, Wole David Akinsola
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractObesity has been identified as a predisposing factor that poses a serious threat for the development of chronic diseases and contributes to health disparities affecting both minority and vulnerable populations. Though previous studies reported the association of stress with health status and behavior, there is little or no research on the heterogeneity of obesity predictors in specific minority populations in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors of obesity among adult African American immigrant populations in the United States. Studying obesity in this population may help policymakers tailor interventions that could reduce obesity prevalence. …

Rationale Translational research, especially research that bridges studies with humans and nonhuman species, is critical to advancing our understanding of human disorders such as addiction. This advancement requires reliable and rigorous models to study the underlying constructs contributing to the maladaptive behavior.
Objective In this commentary, we address some of the challenges of conducting translational research by examining a single procedure, place conditioning. Place conditioning is commonly used with laboratory animals to study the conditioned rewarding effects of drugs, and recent studies indicate that a similar procedure can be used in humans.
Results We discuss the opportunities and challenges of …
Associations Between Socioecological Factors And Breastfeeding Duration Among Obese Mothers In Mississippi, Maria Mercedes Miranda Porter
Associations Between Socioecological Factors And Breastfeeding Duration Among Obese Mothers In Mississippi, Maria Mercedes Miranda Porter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a growing obesity pandemic in the United States. Low breastfeeding duration rates and socioecological factors lead to obesity in the most southern states. Overweight and obese breastfeeding mothers have not been primarily studied. There is mixed information regarding duration of breastfeeding, BMI, and heart health, as well as a lack of quantitative analyses involving reducing obesity rates in mother-child dyads. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to investigate whether there were any associations between breastfeeding duration and BMI, heart health problems, breastfeeding support, and eating and exercise among Mississippi overweight and obese postpartum women based on …

Lg But Not T: Opposition To Transgender Rights Amidst Gay And Lesbian Acceptance, Kelsy Burke, Emily Kazyak, Marissa Oliver
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This article draws on sociological theories of affect and ambivalence to empirically examine individuals who express support for the rights of gays and lesbians but not transgender people. Using a representative survey of Nebraska residents and quantitative and qualitative analysis of close-ended and open-ended responses, we find that the group we call “inconsistents” are more similar demographically to consistent opponents, they outnumber consistent opponents, and that they rely on two types of logics to justify their views. For nearly all who oppose employment nondiscrimination and bathroom protections for transgender people, they use an identity logic to express skepticism, and often …

Human-carnivore conflicts often involve the depredation of domestic livestock. These depredation events are rarely observed, yet mitigation typically involves identifying the species or individual involved for removal or relocation. We tested a molecular method to identify individuals involved in depredation events using mouth swabs to determine if prey DNA could be detected, and for how long. We fed mule deer Odocoileus hemionus meat to captive coyotes Canis latrans and swabbed their mouths at five predetermined intervals between 2–72 h after consumption of the deer meat. We assessed two different molecular forensic methods to analyze the saliva swabs: qPCR for species …

Burmese pythons (Python molurus bivittatus) are native to southeastern Asia, however, there is an established invasive population inhabiting much of southern Florida throughout the Greater Everglades Ecosystem. Pythons have severely impacted native species and ecosystems in Florida and represent one of the most intractable invasive-species management issues across the globe. The difficulty stems from a unique combination of inaccessible habitat and the cryptic and resilient nature of pythons that thrive in the subtropical environment of southern Florida, rendering them extremely challenging to detect. Here we provide a comprehensive review and synthesis of the science relevant to managing invasive …
