The freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri, is an emerging model system for studying animal:microbe symbioses. Intracellular green microalgae are one of the more common symbionts that live in a facultative mutualism with E. muelleri. While these symbioses have long been known, the identity of the algal symbionts in E. muelleri cells has not been studied in detail. Here, we isolate and characterize endosymbiotic algae from E. muelleri collected from different geographic locations. We find that the algae can be transmitted through asexually produced gemmules and importantly that they can form symbioses with different, differentiated sponge cell types in the adult sponge. …

Climate change affects timing of reproduction in many bird species, but few studies have investigated its influence on annual reproductive output. Here, we assess changes in the annual production of young by female breeders in 201 populations of 104 bird species (N = 745,962 clutches) covering all continents between 1970 and 2019. Overall, average offspring production has declined in recent decades, but considerable differences were found among species and populations. A total of 56.7% of populations showed a declining trend in offspring production (significant in 17.4%), whereas 43.3% exhibited an increase (significant in 10.4%). The results show that climatic changes …

Emerging Applications Of 3d Engineered Constructs From Plant Seed Extracts, Sedat Odabaş, Bora Gari̇pcan, Rihab Ksouri

Turkish Journal of Biology

Seeds, by-products derived from various plants such as mango, quince, and apples, are considered waste, though they have emerging commercial potential, and have been used in biological, industrial, and physiological research. Seed-derived natural macromolecules- mainly polysaccharides, mucilage, gums, and cellulose-have physicochemical and structural diversification, giving the potential for forming gels, texturing, thickening, and providing interfacial adsorption. Seed-derived natural macromolecules have been widely used during the last few years in cell research and tissue engineering applications. Their widespread approachability and safety, high rate of biodegradability, biocompatibility, supporting cell proliferation, and extracellular matrix synthesis are the main properties making plant seed derivatives …

Boquila: Ngs Read Simulator To Eliminate Read Nucleotide Bias In Sequence Analysis, Ümi̇t Akköse, Ogün Adebali̇

Turkish Journal of Biology

Sequence content is heterogeneous throughout genomes. Therefore, genome-wide next-generation sequencing (NGS) reads biased towards specific nucleotide profiles are affected by the genome-wide heterogeneous nucleotide distribution. Boquila generates sequences that mimic the nucleotide profile of true reads, which can be used to correct the nucleotide-based bias of genome-wide distribution of NGS reads. Boquila can be configured to generate reads from only specified regions of the reference genome. It also allows the use of input DNA sequencing to correct the bias due to the copy number variations in the genome. Boquila uses standard file formats for input and output data, and it …

A Child’S Constitutional Right To Family Integrity And Counsel In Dependency Proceedings, Rachel Kennedy Jan 2023

A Child’S Constitutional Right To Family Integrity And Counsel In Dependency Proceedings, Rachel Kennedy

Emory Law Journal

Since the child welfare system’s inception, abuse and neglect laws have conflated poverty-related neglect with active parental violence and willful neglect. The ensuing state surveillance has disproportionately harmed poor children and children of color. Pursuant to the state’s expansive parens patriae authority, countless families are investigated, and thousands of children are separated from their caretakers each year—only to be returned within days or weeks after a finding that the reasons for removal were unsubstantiated. Other children risk drifting in foster care limbo until they experience the termination of parental rights—an adjudication so severe that some courts call it the “civil …

In this study, syntheses of new pyrimidine-coupled N-ß-glucosides and tetra-O-acetyl derivatives were carried out. All glycoconjugates were investigated in comparison with known chemotherapeutic agents in terms of their antimicrobial and anticancer functions and DNA/protein binding affinities. Spectral data showed that all glycoside derivatives were obtained by diastereoselectivity as ß-anomers. Both tested groups exhibited strong antiproliferative activity (2.29?66.84 ?g/mL), but some of them had sufficiently ideal % cytotoxicity values (10.01%?16.78%). And also all synthetic compounds exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria. Binding of these compounds to CT-DNA resulted in significant changes in spectral properties, consistent with groove binding. Molecular …

Theoretical Investigation Of Steric Effects On The S1 Potential Energy Surface Of O-Carborane-Anthracene Derivatives, Fahri̇ Alkan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

TDDFT scan calculations were performed for s-carborane-anthracene derivatives (o-CB-X-Ant where X=-H, -CH3, -C2H5 and tert-butyl or -tBu) in order to understand the interplay between the steric effects, S1 potential energy surface (PES) and photophysical properties. The results show that all systems exhibit three local minima on the S1 PES, which correspond to the emissive LE and TICT state, along with the nonemissive CT state respectively. In the case of the unsubstituted system (o-CB-H-Ant), and -CH3 and -C2H5 substituted cases, S1 PES is predicted to be quite flat for certain conformations indicating that it is possible for these systems to reach …

Reading In Place: Ordinary Language Philosophy, Wendell Berry, And Post Critique, Calvin L. Coon Jan 2023

Reading In Place: Ordinary Language Philosophy, Wendell Berry, And Post Critique, Calvin L. Coon

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The twenty-first century, marked by neoliberalism and suspicious, visibly violent far-Right politics, has presented new challenges to critical and literary theorists. In response, some theorists advocate for a postcritical turn, challenging both the surface/depth picture of language and the privileged status of suspicion in interpretation in order to explore alternative pictures of language and reading that can better address the challenges of our own day. In this thesis, I connect one of these alternatives, Toril Moi’s use of Ordinary Language Philosophy in literary studies, to Wendell Berry’s prioritization of place in environmentalist activism. In connecting these two thinkers, I contend …

In The Thick(Et) Of It: Addressing Biologic Patent Thickets Using The Sham Exception To Noerr-Pennington, Anna Zhou

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

A biologic patent thicket occurs when a pharmaceutical company acquires a “dense web” of patents and other intellectual property rights regarding a specific product. While applying for multiple patents is permissible, the resulting protections can have antitrust implications. In an industry like biologics, where companies can acquire patent exclusivity and regulatory exclusivity over their products, the process of continuously accumulating these exclusivities seems to be an attempt to keep biosimilars at bay. Keeping competitors out of the market drives up prices and raises questions about how these regulatory and patent pathways are being used.

Recent class action litigation in the …

Silly Gene Patent Is Not My Lover: A Retrospective Analysis Of Myriad, Stephanie Huang Jan 2023

Silly Gene Patent Is Not My Lover: A Retrospective Analysis Of Myriad, Stephanie Huang

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. established that an isolated fragment of a gene—the basic unit of heredity—is not patent-eligible subject matter while simultaneously holding that complementary DNA (cDNA) of a gene is patent-eligible subject matter. The decision has been controversial and criticized for including two holdings that are internally inconsistent from both scientific and patent law perspectives. But are the short- and long-term criticisms overstated? A decade after Myriad, the various impacts of the case remain relevant, particularly to the biotechnology and genetic testing fields.

First, this Note examines whether Myriad …
