Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean Jan 2023

Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean

Tenor of Our Times

Emperor Nero was the last of the four Julio-Claudian emperors and has been considered to be one of worst emperors of Rome. The Roman scholars and Christians historians were some of his greatest foes, and the only ones left to tell his story. This paper takes a second look at these ancient sources and addresses what modern scholars have discovered about the true nature of Nero. Though he has been painted as clueless and childlike, in reality, Nero was much more cold and calculated than anyone had gave him credit for.

Unplanned Costs And Benefits: Gender And Spousal Spillover Effects Of Retirement On Health, Lauren Newmyer, Kendal L. Lowrey, Yuliana Levchenko

Sociology Faculty Publications

Objective: Our study assesses how women and men's health indicators are shaped by their spouse's retirement. Background: The retirement process can reshape the health of a retiree, but these effects can also extend onto the health of spouses. Although past research has largely focused on how men's retirement might negatively shape their wife's health outcomes, it is possible that wives' retirement has detrimental effects on their husband's health as well.

Method: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we employ a fuzzy regression discontinuity design to identify the causal effects of spousal retirement on indicators of physical and …

The Molecular Mechanisms Of Ifn-Γ Promoted Necroptosis In Macrophages, Meghan R. Vogt Jan 2023

The Molecular Mechanisms Of Ifn-Γ Promoted Necroptosis In Macrophages, Meghan R. Vogt

Biotechnology Theses

Necroptosis, a form of programmed lytic cell death, has emerged as a driving factor in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury. One specific inflammatory mediator that is of interest is interferon-γ (IFN-γ). Our laboratory has reported that IFN-γ is the most potent enhancer of necroptosis in primary lung epithelial cells and macrophages by upregulating MLKL expression. How IFN-γ enhances necroptosis and MLKL upregulation is currently unknown. In this research, we utilized multiple approaches to study the potential molecular mechanisms of IFN-γ promoted necroptosis in macrophages. We found that MLKL and ZBP1 are significantly upregulated by IFN-γ through an unknown pathway …

Comparison Of Groundwater Chemistry And Associated Biodiversity Of Sulfidic Karst Habitats In Southcentral Kentucky, Kendall Wheeler Jan 2023

Comparison Of Groundwater Chemistry And Associated Biodiversity Of Sulfidic Karst Habitats In Southcentral Kentucky, Kendall Wheeler

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In most ecosystems, primary production is conducted by plants or photosynthetic microbes; however, extremophilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria can use hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) as an electron donor to produce metabolic energy in a type of metabolism called chemoautotrophy. These ecosystems are a prominent feature of some karst landscapes, and two have been observed in the Mammoth Cave system, Sulphur River in Parker Cave and Marianne’s Pass in Mammoth Cave National Park respectively.

Sulfidic water is ubiquitous in southcentral Kentucky and is strongly associated with hydrocarbon deposits. This oil boom of the 1880s in this region predates most environmental regulation and records …

Growing With Our Heroes: Utilizing Hero Narratives In Therapy To Foster Psychological Resilience And Posttraumatic Growth, Reagan Overby Jan 2023

Growing With Our Heroes: Utilizing Hero Narratives In Therapy To Foster Psychological Resilience And Posttraumatic Growth, Reagan Overby

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

With the rise of positive psychology, clinical psychologists and other helping-professionals have rightly begun to emphasize the importance of psychological factors that predict human flourishing rather than studying risk factors and psychopathology alone. This new emphasis has largely driven research into constructs such as psychological resilience and posttraumatic growth (PTG); both manifestations of the human ability to survive or grow following experiences with extreme adversity that are often traumatic. The current standards of care for those who have experienced a trauma include asking these individuals to voluntarily discuss and confront their traumatic experiences; a task made challenging by nature of …

Implementing A Strengths-Based Cbt Specialization For African American Girls, Myresha C. Hinton Jan 2023

Implementing A Strengths-Based Cbt Specialization For African American Girls, Myresha C. Hinton

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Historically, the African American community has experienced years of hardship and adversity. Beginning in the 17th century, enslaved African Americans were utilized for labor and labeled as “others” which in turn led the community to be viewed as inferior. With that preconceived notion, individuals were not allowed to obtain basic human rights (Oca & Bhugra, 2021). While there have been laws and regulations set for African Americans to have basic human rights, other forms of racism and discrimination have plagued the community for many decades. For example, systemic racism and healthcare disparities are other forms of discrimination that have seriously …

The field of radiomics provides a quantitative approach to medical imaging, wherein a large number of features extracted from medical images are used to detect clinically relevant information that is invisible to the naked eye. This increasingly prevalentmethodology has facilitated improvements in the speed and efficacy of clinical decision-making across specialties. One area where radiomics can make a particular impact is acute stroke imaging. As “time is brain” in acute stroke triage, automated tools for patient evaluation have significant potential to improve outcomes by providing timely, objective data. The present work aimed to create radiomics models from admission CT angiographic …

Characterization Of Cutaneous Immune-Related Adverse Events Due To Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Annika Belzer Jan 2023

Characterization Of Cutaneous Immune-Related Adverse Events Due To Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Annika Belzer

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have been associated with a multitude of immune-related adverse events (irAE), which affect multiple organ systems in the setting of increased immune activation. Cutaneous immune-related adverse events (cirAE) are among the most common irAE, occurring in up to 50% of patients treated with an ICI. The most common cirAE are maculopapular eruption, pruritus (with or without primary cutaneous eruption), lichenoid dermatitis, eczematous dermatitis, psoriasiform eruption, and vitiligo. cirAE are of concern to oncologists and dermatologists alike, as cirAE can necessitate interruption or discontinuation of life-prolonging therapy. There is a paucity of data regarding cirAE in specific …

Toll-Like Receptors 2/4 Directly Co-Stimulate Arginase-1 Induction Critical For Macrophage-Mediated Renal Tubule Regeneration, Natnael Beyene Doilicho

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Following kidney injury, macrophages that have infiltrated the kidney undergo a transition from an initial proinflammatory state to a pro-reparative one characterized by the expression of arginase-1 (Arg 1), mannose receptor (Mrc1) and macrophage scavenger receptor-1 (Msr1). Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is an essential tubular-cell-derived determinant of the pro-reparative phenotype. However, it remains unclear what additional, if any, signals macrophages are integrating to maximally induce arginase-1.

Hypothesis: (1) The addition of cellular debris as a tubular cell cast mimetic will augment Arg1 expression in GM-CSF stimulated bone marrow derived macrophages; (2) Toll-like-receptors 2/4 transduce the debris signal from (1) …

Beta-Catenin Nuclear Transport In Wnt Signaling: Kap-Beta2/Transportin Mediates Nuclear Import Of Beta-Catenin Via A Py-Nls Motif In A Ran Gtpase Dependent Manner, Woong Y. Hwang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Wnt signaling is essential for embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis; mutations in Wnt pathway components are major drivers of multiple diseases especially cancer. β-catenin is a key effector in this pathway that translocates into the nucleus and activates Wnt responsive genes. However, due to our lack of understanding of β-catenin nuclear transport, therapeutic modulation of Wnt signaling has been challenging. Here, we took an unconventional approach to address this long-standing question by exploiting a heterologous model system, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which contains a conserved nuclear transport machinery. In contrast to prior work, we demonstrate that β-catenin accumulates …

Single-Cell Transcriptomic Atlas Reveals Molecular Drivers Of Human Inner Ear Development, Amar H. Sheth

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Introduction: Improving the therapeutic landscape for hearing loss necessitates an improved understanding of inner ear biology. Historically, our molecular understanding of inner ear physiology has lagged behind our knowledge of mechanistic understanding of signal transduction due to the rare, diverse, and fragile cell types of the inner ear. However, recent advances in high-throughput sequencing have allowed us to decode the molecular underpinnings of physiologic changes in the murine inner ear. Herein, we single-cell RNA sequence fetal tissue and present a comprehensive atlas of the developing human inner ear. Harnessing newer approaches in computational analysis, we delineate diversity of cell types …

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Eye lens crystallin proteins maintain the refractive properties of the lens but are not replaced after denucleation. Rolland et al. use native ion mobility-mass spectrometry, kinetics experiments, and computations to reveal that b-crystallins form heterodimers. These likely assemble into compact heterooligomers that enable the very high protein concentrations found in lens tissue.
