Mitigating Global Temperature Change Through Industrial Sector Improvements: A Case Study In Automotive Manufacturing, Alec Joseph Ernst Jan 2023

Mitigating Global Temperature Change Through Industrial Sector Improvements: A Case Study In Automotive Manufacturing, Alec Joseph Ernst

Theses and Dissertations

Manufacturing is an integral part of our country’s flow of products and people and a top contributor to carbon emissions, promoting global temperature rise. During processing, toxic substances are emitted across the value chain. These emissions account for nearly 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and the World. Until 2023, an accessible pathway for manufacturing companies to transition to net-zero emissions hasn’t been made readily available. The current research was conducted to determine if reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing facilities through efficiency improvements, process optimization, and technology advancements can mitigate global temperature change. This quantitative, mixed-method approach …

Remote Sensing Of Chlorophyll-A In Small And Medium Lakes In The Minnesota Northern Forest Ecoregion, Jacob Alan Moll Jan 2023

Remote Sensing Of Chlorophyll-A In Small And Medium Lakes In The Minnesota Northern Forest Ecoregion, Jacob Alan Moll

Theses and Dissertations

Algae blooms have become increasingly common in many bodies of water and are occurring in more and more new locations. Past methods have relied on in-situ sampling to determine Chl-a concentrations and can be time and cost intensive. With the use of NASA’s Harmonized Landsat imagery existing methods of index calculation can be implemented, with the added benefit of an increase in temporal resolution. This increase in temporal resolution allows for more detailed spatial and temporal analysis such as hot spot analysis. Harmonized Landsat imagery was proven sufficient in spatial and temporal resolution for detection of Chl-a in small and …

When The Verdict Is Not So Black And White: Juror Perceptions And Judgments Of Biracial Defendants, Mariah Sorby Jan 2023

When The Verdict Is Not So Black And White: Juror Perceptions And Judgments Of Biracial Defendants, Mariah Sorby

Theses and Dissertations

Racial disparities are a persistent issue within the United States criminal justice system. Past research has investigated how defendant characteristics (e.g., race and phenotype) and juror attitudes and beliefs (e.g., stereotypes and prejudice) influence mock juror case judgments and perceptions. This literature has primarily investigated outcomes for monoracial defendants. However, there is a significant need for research investigating outcomes of multiracial defendants. The purpose of this project was to investigate the influence of phenotype, crime stereotypes, and juror attitudes on case judgments and perceptions of Black-White Biracial defendants compared to White and Black defendants. Participants were randomly assigned to view …

Reconceptualizing Open Access To Theses And Dissertations, Orit Fischman Afori, Dalit Ken-Dror Feldman

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Theses and dissertations (TD) are academic research projects that are conducted by graduate students to acquire a high academic degree, such as a PhD. The perception of the written TD has evolved over the years, following changes concerning the purpose of advanced academic studies. Today, these academic fruits should meet a high standard of academic innovation, which is understood broadly as encompassing not only knowledge concerning basic science but also the knowledge that generates social and economic value for society.

The modern perception of TD has generated a call for their greater accessibility, as part of the Open Science movement. …

Beyond Color-Blind International Economic Law, James T. Gathii Jan 2023

Beyond Color-Blind International Economic Law, James T. Gathii

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This essay makes three claims. First, that the central role of race in international economic law has been erased and much more needs to be done to recover its large footprints in the discipline as well as in the policies and practices that constitute it. Second, that rules of international economic law formally embed racially constructed hierarchies, such as those that subordinate the status of former and current colonies. Further, that this subordination is not merely of the former and current colonies, but also of large swaths of Black and Brown peoples around the world. Third, that international economic law …

The Forced Effeminization Of Male Chinese Immigrants And The Consequences Of This Process, Hailee Brandt Jan 2023

The Forced Effeminization Of Male Chinese Immigrants And The Consequences Of This Process, Hailee Brandt

Undergraduate Research Awards

The aim of this paper is to uncover and highlight the forced effeminization of male Chinese immigrants and the consequences of this process during the Chinese Exclusion Act Era. The Chinese Exclusion Act Era is defined by a period of time within American history in which strict and scrutinizing laws were created with the aim of restricting access to the United States for Chinese people. Additionally, these laws aimed to restrict the freedom the Chinese people might have had whilst living their lives in America if they ever were to make it through such oppressive borders. The most notable of …

Gold Nanoparticles And Liposomal Nanocarriers For Drug Delivery In Cancers, Ari Cogswell, Sylvia Guillet Jan 2023

Gold Nanoparticles And Liposomal Nanocarriers For Drug Delivery In Cancers, Ari Cogswell, Sylvia Guillet

Undergraduate Research Awards

Cancers are a complex range of diseases that are universally characterized by uncontrolled cell growth that often manifest as malignant tumors. Worldwide, they are the second leading cause of death. The most prevalent current treatments, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, indiscriminately damage both cancerous cells and healthy cells. This results in an abundance of short-term and long-term complications, which can kill the patient before killing the tumor. This illustrates the need for more targeted, effective treatments with fewer adverse effects on healthy tissue, and the use of both organic and inorganic nanoparticles is among the most promising solutions (Yang et. al., 2022). …

Prescribing Exploitation, Charlotte A. Tschider Jan 2023

Prescribing Exploitation, Charlotte A. Tschider

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Patients are increasingly reliant temporarily, if not indefinitely, on connected medical devices and wearables, many of which use artificial intelligence (“AI”) infrastructures and physical housing that directly interacts with the human body. The automated systems that drive the infrastructures of medical devices and wearables, especially those using complex AI, often use dynamically inscrutable algorithms that may render discriminatory effects that alter paths of treatment and other aspects of patient welfare.

Previous contributions to the literature, however, have not explored how AI technologies animate exploitation of medical technology users. Although all commercial relationships may exploit users to some degree, some forms …

Uncharted Waters: Can Water Rights Principles Stem The Tide Of Ecosystem Services Loss?, Kalyani Robbins Jan 2023

Uncharted Waters: Can Water Rights Principles Stem The Tide Of Ecosystem Services Loss?, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article will explore the ways in which we might apply aspects of the conceptual framework developed through centuries of water law to the modern need for property interests in ecosystem services.

Water itself is a high-value ecosystem service, largely within the category of “provisioning” ecosystem services. We need access to water to survive, which has resulted in centuries of varying legal approaches to allocating rights to water. Although this right has traditionally been extractive, in the modern era we have developed increasing protections for in-stream benefits as well. While not uniform across jurisdictions, water law is now a highly …

Understanding Parents’ Sense-Making Of Their Role In Adolescent Daughters’ Social Media Use Through The Lens Of Relational Dialectics Theory 2.0, Aimee Miller-Ott, Lynne Kelly, Samantha Schultz Jan 2023

Understanding Parents’ Sense-Making Of Their Role In Adolescent Daughters’ Social Media Use Through The Lens Of Relational Dialectics Theory 2.0, Aimee Miller-Ott, Lynne Kelly, Samantha Schultz

Faculty Publications - Communications

With the development of social media, parents must figure out how to guide their children’s use or even whether to allow it. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 30 parents of daughters aged 12–18. Relational dialectics theory 2.0 was used to analyze how parents’ talk revealed their sense-making of their role in adolescent daughters’ social media use. Analysis revealed that parents voiced competing discourses pertaining to “bad” versus “good” parents and monitoring versus trusting daughters. Discourses that take place at the distal level compete with those at the proximal site of the utterance chain, challenging parents to engage in …

Utilizing Outpatient Telehealth As A Treatment Approach For Patients With Substance Use Disorder: A Quality Improvement Project, Veronica Kwegyir-Afful Jan 2023

Utilizing Outpatient Telehealth As A Treatment Approach For Patients With Substance Use Disorder: A Quality Improvement Project, Veronica Kwegyir-Afful

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: The issue of substance use disorder (SUD) has demonstrated a growing prevalence both in the United States (U.S.) and globally. Effective treatment modalities have been devised for individuals afflicted by SUD, thereby enabling their post-treatment prognosis to be parallel to that of patients with other chronic diseases, such as diabetes. However, several factors or barriers impede individuals with SUD from assessing treatment. These barriers encompass financial constraints stemming from inadequate insurance coverage and high cost, the stigma surrounding SUD, which results in patient's hesitancy to seek treatment treat, adverse societal attitudes, collateral social percussions like work hour losses and …

Expert Knowledge, Democratic Accountability, And The Unitary Executive, Barry Sullivan Jan 2023

Expert Knowledge, Democratic Accountability, And The Unitary Executive, Barry Sullivan

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This essay, which was prepared for the Fordham Law Review's February 2023 symposium on the Unitary Executive, addresses the question whether the Constitution requires that the President have absolute control over the information that those charged with executive authority may provide to Congress and the public, regardless of how technical or essential to democratic governance that information may be, and notwithstanding the existence of legislation to the contrary. For example, does the Constitution require that the President must be free to substitute their judgment for that of an expert official charged by Congress with making determinations about the likely path …

Brave Spaces, Radical Openness, And Youth Loneliness, Taylor Curry, Mariah Thomas, Riese Munoz Jan 2023

Brave Spaces, Radical Openness, And Youth Loneliness, Taylor Curry, Mariah Thomas, Riese Munoz

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

It is no secret young adults, no matter where in the world they come from, face social pressures with the potential to be isolating. For today’s youth, not only are they feeling the commonplace anxieties about fitting in, finding success, and uncertainty of the future, but these anxieties are exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Young adults from all over the globe report feeling more anxious, more depressed, and more lonely. However, it is also no secret that deliberate community building, creation of art and writing as a means of self-exploration, and participation in spaces designed for acceptance fend off these …

A Vision Of The Anti-Racist Public Corporation, Steven A. Ramirez Jan 2023

A Vision Of The Anti-Racist Public Corporation, Steven A. Ramirez

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The publicly traded corporation rightly exemplifies the great potential of legal infrastructure to advance macroeconomic growth and human development. Left to its current legal and regulatory frameworks, however, it will fuel inequality and the replication of racial hierarchy indefinitely. Taking affirmative action to broaden participation of our population at all levels of the public firm will open its ability to fund human ingenuity to all. This would vindicate the essential public purpose of the legal infrastructure governing the public corporation. It would also place capitalism itself on a firmer social foundation through the creation of a more cohesive and productive …

An Association Of The Transgenerational Implications Of Redlining And Obesity On Pediatric Type Ii Diabetes, Carlin Dexter Nelson Jan 2023

An Association Of The Transgenerational Implications Of Redlining And Obesity On Pediatric Type Ii Diabetes, Carlin Dexter Nelson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

s the prevalence and incidence of childhood obesity has increased, so has the number of cases of pediatric Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although made unconstitutional in 1968, the transgenerational implications of redlining can be observed in disinvestments resulting in neighborhood detraction. Utilizing the 2019–2020 National Children’s Health Survey, the purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between obesity, T2DM, and neighborhood detraction elements as well as assessed indicators of T2DM in non-institutionalized children 6 through17 years of age (N = 34,725). The social determinants of health perspective served as the conceptual framework for the study. Results indicated …

Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives On Their Responses To Children’S Challenging Behaviors, Dr. Sharon Denise Scallion Jan 2023

Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives On Their Responses To Children’S Challenging Behaviors, Dr. Sharon Denise Scallion

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe problem that was the focus of this study was the high rate of suspensions and expulsions of preschool children enrolled in independently funded childcare centers in Texas, and the lack of understanding of preschool teachers’ response to children’s challenging behavior. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore preschool teachers’ perspective on how they handle children’s challenging behaviors, and what inclines teachers toward suspending or expelling children from independently funded childcare centers. Liu’s theory of children’s externalizing behavior provided the conceptual framework for the study. Ten preschool teachers from urban, independently funded childcare centers in Texas were …
