Prospective Investigation Of Insomnia Symptoms And Sleep Duration As Risk Factors For Stroke Incidence And All-Cause Mortality In U.S Adult, Wendemi Sawadogo
Theses and Dissertations
Background and Objectives: Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the world. In the United States, on average, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies as a result of stroke every 3.5 minutes. Identifying modifiable risk factors of stroke is therefore a public health priority. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which insomnia symptoms and sleep duration contribute to stroke incidence, all-cause mortality, and explore potential causal pathways.
Methods: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study were …
Association Of Interpersonal Trauma And Polygenic Risk Scores With Depressive Symptoms In College Students, Rowan K. O'Hara
Association Of Interpersonal Trauma And Polygenic Risk Scores With Depressive Symptoms In College Students, Rowan K. O'Hara
Theses and Dissertations
Major depression is considered a complex trait influenced by both polygenic risk factors and environmental exposures, such as childhood trauma. This study applied statistical genetic methods to calculate aggregate genetic risk for major depression to predict depressive symptoms scores in a college student sample. Data were from the Spit for Science (S4S) study in which college students from a large urban university self-reported interpersonal trauma (IPT) exposure prior to college and depressive symptoms from the past month (N = 7502; ancestry group: 20% African [AFR], 12% Admixed Americas [AMR], 10% East Asian [EAS], 49% European [EUR], 8% South Asian [SAS]). …
Enhancing Neuromorphic Computing With Advanced Spiking Neural Network Architectures, Paolo Gabriel Alejandro Cachi Delgado
Enhancing Neuromorphic Computing With Advanced Spiking Neural Network Architectures, Paolo Gabriel Alejandro Cachi Delgado
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes ways to address current limitations of neuromorphic computing to create energy-efficient and adaptable systems for AI applications. It does so by designing novel spiking neural networks architectures that improve their performance. Specifically, the two proposed architectures address the issues of training complexity, hyperparameter selection, computational flexibility, and scarcity of neuromorphic training data. The first architecture uses auxiliary learning to improve training performance and data usage, while the second architecture leverages neuromodulation capability of spiking neurons to improve multitasking classification performance. The proposed architectures are tested on Intel's Loihi2 neuromorphic chip using several neuromorphic datasets, such as NMIST, …
Quantifying Fibronectin Mechanical Properties Using Antibody-Mediated Optical Tweezing (Amot), Caleb Dalton
Quantifying Fibronectin Mechanical Properties Using Antibody-Mediated Optical Tweezing (Amot), Caleb Dalton
Theses and Dissertations
Despite decades of investigations into fibronectin (FN) fibrillogenesis, fibril mechanics remain unclear. One of the most important roles for FN fibrils is in the arena of cellular mechanotransduction. Numerous studies have demonstrated that cells sense and respond to the mechanical properties of their surroundings; since FN fibrils are a major constituent of the ECM that links cells to their surroundings, mechanotransduction cannot be fully understood without understanding the mechanical properties of FN fibrils. In this proposal, a novel biomechanical assay is developed to probe isolated FN fibrils and quantify their response to specific loading conditions. This will be accomplished by …

The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of Black youth in Richmond, VA with school-based sexual health education (SHE) and their …
Integrating Historically Marginalized Students’ Funds Of Knowledge For Culturally Responsive Teaching And Learning, Martinique Ann Sealy
Integrating Historically Marginalized Students’ Funds Of Knowledge For Culturally Responsive Teaching And Learning, Martinique Ann Sealy
Theses and Dissertations
The United States historically has not always recognized the unique knowledge, or Funds of Knowledge (FoK; Moll et. al, 1992) that Black (and other historically marginalized) students’ have as assets to classroom learning and much of today’s mainstream curriculum represents White cultural norms as the basis (Sjursen, 2021). Because of this reality, marginalized students must navigate mainstream cultural norms alongside their own culture to be successful in the classroom. This three-paper dissertation includes 1. a systematic literature review of Black U.S. k-8 students language and identity in relation to achievement, 2. a qualitative case study centered on middle school urban …
The Effect Of Strain And Drug Combinations On Ketamine's Locomotor Activating Effects In Rats, Caroline K. Flagler
The Effect Of Strain And Drug Combinations On Ketamine's Locomotor Activating Effects In Rats, Caroline K. Flagler
Theses and Dissertations
Rationale: Initially developed as an anesthetic, ketamine is now used to treat a variety of disorders, including treatment resistant depression (TRD). While ketamine appears to be a breakthrough therapy for TRD, it has many use-limiting side effects, including abuse liability, psychotomimetic effects, and sedation. Utilizing ketamine in combination with other medications, such as the monoaminergic antidepressant desipramine (DSP), opioid antagonist naltrexone (NTX), and the NMDA receptor partial agonist D-cycloserine (DCS) may reduce side-effects resulting from ketamine therapy.
Objectives: The goal of this project was to study ketamine’s adverse effects using locomotor activation in an open field as a behavioral correlate …
Role Of The Ormdls In Keratinocytes, Souad Hatmi
Role Of The Ormdls In Keratinocytes, Souad Hatmi
Theses and Dissertations
The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, serves as a vital barrier protecting the body from environmental stressors, pathogens, and dehydration. Keratinocytes, the predominant cell type in the epidermis, play a central role in maintaining skin integrity and barrier function. In normal human skin, keratinocytes move from the basal layer to the stratum corneum, the top layer of the epidermis. In their travel, keratinocytes undergo a process of terminal differentiation, loss their ability to proliferate, secrete sphingolipids into the extracellular space, and gradually loss their nucleus and organelles. Sphingolipids, particularly ceramides, are key components of the intercellular lipid lamellae …
Computational Modeling Of Temporal Eeg Responses To Cyclic Binary Visual Stimulus Patterns, Connor M. Delaney
Computational Modeling Of Temporal Eeg Responses To Cyclic Binary Visual Stimulus Patterns, Connor M. Delaney
Theses and Dissertations
The human visual system serves as the basis for many modern computer vision and machine learning approaches. While detailed biophysical models of certain aspects of the visual system exist, little work has been done to develop an end-to-end model from the visual stimulus to the signals generated at the visual cortex measured via the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG). The creation of such a model would not only provide a better understanding of the visual processing pathways but would also facilitate the design and evaluation of more robust visual stimuli for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). A novel experiment was designed and conducted where …
Evaluating The Influence Of Concurrently Available Non-Drug Reinforcers On Drug Reinforcement Using Sophisticated Preclinical Models Of Substance Use Disorder, Madison M. Marcus
Evaluating The Influence Of Concurrently Available Non-Drug Reinforcers On Drug Reinforcement Using Sophisticated Preclinical Models Of Substance Use Disorder, Madison M. Marcus
Theses and Dissertations
The maladaptive allocation of behavior towards cocaine and away from other concurrently available non-drug reinforcers (e.g., family, health, work, etc.) is a key characteristic of cocaine use disorder (CUD) that is embedded into multiple diagnostic criteria for CUD. Accordingly, basic research conducted in a drug-vs-food “choice” context has improved our fundamental knowledge of the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of drug reinforcement. However, to date, these preclinical studies have only been conducted with food as the alternative reinforcer. The extent to which other non-drug reinforcers compete with cocaine-taking behavior is unknown. The studies in this dissertation establish two sophisticated discrete-trial cocaine-vs-alternative …

Novel Strategies In Head And Neck Tumor Therapy; Contribution Of Senescence In Therapy Response, And Resistance Development After Cisplatin Treatment, Fereshteh Ahmadinejad
Novel Strategies In Head And Neck Tumor Therapy; Contribution Of Senescence In Therapy Response, And Resistance Development After Cisplatin Treatment, Fereshteh Ahmadinejad
Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic outcomes achieved in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients by concurrent cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy initially reflect both tumor regression and tumor stasis. However, local, and distant metastasis and disease relapse as well as cisplatin-induced resistance are common in HNSCC patients. In the current work, we demonstrate that cisplatin treatment induces senescence in both p53 wild- type HN30 and p53 mutant HN12 head and neck cancer models. We also show that tumor cells can escape from senescence both in vitro and in vivo. We further established a cisplatin-resistant cell line from HN30 parental cell line that underwent brief senescence …
Evolution And Environmental Controls Of Area Updraft Proxies In Qlcss Observed In Perils-2022, Celia Werner
Evolution And Environmental Controls Of Area Updraft Proxies In Qlcss Observed In Perils-2022, Celia Werner
Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current
Results from recent modeling and observational work have connected the size or area of convective updrafts with hazardous weather, including tornadoes and large hail. Additional studies have hypothesized that elements of the near-storm environment (NSE) controls updraft size. However, observationally, little is known about the evolution of updraft sizes in quasi-linear convective systems (QLCSs) and what impact the NSE has on the updraft sizes at mid-levels. A recent and ongoing multi-agency integrated field project focused on better understanding the development and life cycles of tornadoes in QLCSs provides an opportunity to do so. The Propagation, Evolution, and Rotation in Linear …

Advancing Our Understanding On The Role Of Bromodomain Phd-Finger Transcription Factor (Bptf) In Cancer Through The Analysis Of Publicly Available Databases., Preksha Jerajani
Theses and Dissertations
The initiation and progression of cancer are significantly influenced by genetic factors, and despite ongoing research, a definite cure for this disease remains elusive. Over time, researchers have explored various genes as potential targets for treating various types of cancer, and numerous innovative therapies continue to be developed. General chemotherapies face their own challenges like recurrence, while cancer specific drugs face the challenge of metastasis. Therefore, therapeutic strategies have slowly started to shift towards comprehending the pathways and corresponding genes that may be implicated in multiple types of cancer, with the aim of identifying more effective targets for drug development. …

In this study, some novel mono- and di-O-β-D-glycopyranosyl chalcone analogs were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The chalcone derivatives were synthesized with good yields by base-catalyzed Claisen-Schmidt condensation in EtOH solution. Then these chalcones were reacted with TAGBr (2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-μ-D-glucopyranosylbromide) in dry acetone under the anhydrous condition at 0-5 °C. Deacylated was carried out by the Zemplen's method with NaOCH3 in dry methanol results in substituted chalcone-O-glycosides (mono- and di-O-β-D-glycopyranosyl chalcone analogs). The chemical structures of all synthesized compounds were elucidated based on IR, NMR spectral data, and mass spectrometry. Further, the compounds (7a-c, 8a-c, 12a-c, 16a-c, and 17a-c) …

Effect Of Microfluidic Channel Integration Onto Gold Microelectrode On Its Redox Electrochemistry, Ahmet Uçar, Zahraa Ali Hajool, Hamed Ghorbanpoor, Reza Didarian, Fatma Doğan Güzel
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Microfluidic systems have attracted significant interest in recent years as they are extensively employed in lab-on-chip and organ-on-chip research. Their combination with electrochemical platforms offers many advantages, promising a high potential for sensing applications, still the microfluidic-channel integration onto electrodes might induce challenges related to changes in signal-tonoise ratios and mass transport conditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of microfluidic channel integration in redox behavior of thermally deposited gold thin film microelectrodes by voltammetric (CV and SWV) electrochemical measurements. Using different dimensions of PDMS microfluidic channels (i.e. widths of 50, 100, 250, and 500 μm) and a constant …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Based on the privileged fragment-based drug design strategy, a series of imatinib analogues bearing the moiety of 3-(2-amino- 2-oxoacetyl)-1H-indole were designed and synthesized, and the in vitro antitumor activity of these compounds was detected by MTT method using K562 (human myeloid leukemia) and K562R (imatinib-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia) cell lines. Molecular docking was used to preliminarily explain the possible binding modes. The most potent compound I2 exhibited better antitumor activity than those of imatinib against K562 and K562R cancer cells with IC50 values of 0.8 ?M and 0.7 ?M.

Ultrasound-Assisted Synthesis Of Rgo/Sio2-Based Nanosheets And Their Electrochemical Performances In Li-Ion Batteries, Ersu Lökçü, Süleyman Can, Mustafa Anik
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, a facile approach has been developed to fabricate GO/SiO2 nanosheets by the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the graphene oxide (GO) solution with the assistance of the ultrasonication. The morphology and structure of the SiO2/GO nanosheets were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the covalently bonded SiO2 nanoparticles onto the GO sheets were dense and uniform. The agglomeration of the nanosheets was prevented by the ultrasonication and the layer sizes decreased throughout the synthesis process. The size and thickness of the SiO2 …

A calibration set of 16 mixtures, each containing PAR and TRA in various amounts, was created using a 24-full fractional design. The absorbance data set for the calibration set were obtained between 215?280 nm (?? = 0.1 nm). Subsequently, the concentration and absorbance sets were used to generate PCR and PLS calibrations. The ratio spectra- first derivative method was devised as a solution to the same problem to …
A Bioinformatics Approach For Evaluating Evolutionary Convergence Of Gene Family Size In Hematophagous Insects, Mbemba Ceesay
A Bioinformatics Approach For Evaluating Evolutionary Convergence Of Gene Family Size In Hematophagous Insects, Mbemba Ceesay
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The act of blood-feeding can be nutritionally rewarding for blood-feeding arthropods. However, blood digestion can release pro-oxidant molecules such as heme and iron at potentially harmful levels. If left uncontrolled, this heme/iron can cause oxidative damage and eventually cell death. This has led to the evolution of various adaptations that protect blood-feeding arthropods against iron- and heme-associated damage. Here I postulate that the signature of this adaptation can be observed in patterns of gene family size. To test this hypothesis, I explore convergent evolutionary expansions and contractions of gene families in distinct lineages of hematophagous insects. Specifically, I compare the …
Pink Tax And Other Tropes, Bridget J. Crawford
Pink Tax And Other Tropes, Bridget J. Crawford
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Law reform advocates should be strategic in deploying tax tropes. Through an examination of five common tax phrases—the “nanny tax,” “death tax,” “soda tax,” “Black tax,” and “pink tax”—this Article demonstrates that tax rhetoric is more likely to influence law when used to describe specific economic injustices resulting from actual government duties, as opposed to figurative inequalities. In comparison, slogans describing figurative taxes are less likely to influence law and human behavior, even if they have descriptive force in both popular and academic literature as a short-hand for group-based disparities. This Article catalogues and evaluates what makes for effective tax …

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Neither the statute nor its implementing regulations explicitly define “sex” to include discrimination on the basis of menstruation or related conditions such as perimenopause and menopause. This textual absence has caused confusion over whether Title IX must be interpreted to protect students and other community members from all types of sex-based discrimination. It also calls into question the law's ability to break down systemic sex-based barriers related to menstruation in educational spaces. Absent an interpretation that there …

Menstruation In A Post-Dobbs World, Emily Gold Waldman, Bridget J. Crawford
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
In this Essay, we re-examine our 2022 book, Menstruation Matters: Challenging the Law's Silence on Periods, through multiple related lenses, including the human rights, sustainability, and workplace issues emphasized by our three reviewers; the COVID-19 pandemic; and the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. All of these perspectives converge on the inherent dignity and autonomy interests in being able to manage one's own body. Menstruation and related conditions like breastfeeding, pregnancy, and menopause should not be sources of shame or stigma. Nor should they be vectors of formal control by the government or de facto exclusion …

Conservation easements are an essential tool for conserving private lands, and they have great potential for enhancing wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Private land conservation in the United States is likely to increase in the coming years, in light of Executive Order No. 14,008, issued by President Joseph Biden on January 27, 2021, which set a goal of conserving at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 (Executive Office of the President 2021). There is, therefore, a need to evaluate the effect of conservation easements on wildlife habitat and biodiversity and to make recommendations for further enhancing the effectiveness …

A company that earns premarket approval of its medical device is entitled to an extension of one patent claiming the device, to make up for some of the time it spent doing premarket research. Yet, surprisingly, a mere thirteen percent of those eligible for this extension (also known as patent term "restoration") ask for one. In contrast, most drug companies entitled to this same patent extension ask for one.
In this Article, we attribute the imbalance largely to differences between the two regulatory frameworks. In brief, because the FDA classifies and regulates devices based on what they do and how …

Unveiling Similarities And Differences Between Cutaneous And Ocular Melanomas, Abdallah Badou, Nour El Imane Issam Salah, Mohamed Elbelhadji
Health Sciences
Melanomas are outstandingly aggressive cancers, still their incidence is increasing. They can occur in the skin as cutaneous melanoma or in the eye as ocular melanoma. Their pathogenesis is generally similar; however, the prognosis of ocular melanoma patients is still poor, due to its special genetic profile and tumor microenvironment. Here we review the similarities and differences between cutaneous and ocular melanoma, with a focus on their prognostic significance, their molecular signature, and their tumor microenvironment, in order to understand the strategies adopted to escape immune response. Gathering and understanding available knowledge of melanomas and their specificities may help to …

Genome size varies ∼100,000-fold across eukaryotes and has long been hypothesized to be influenced by meta- morphosis in animals. Transposable element accumulation has been identified as a major driver of increase, but the nature of constraints limiting the size of genomes has remained unclear, even as traits such as cell size and rate of development co-vary strongly with genome size. Salamanders, which possess diverse metamorphic and non-metamorphic life histories, join the lung- fish in having the largest vertebrate genomes—3 to 40 times that of humans—as well as the largest range of variation in genome size. We tested 13 biologically-inspired hypotheses …
