Miocene strike-slip tectonics was responsible for creating and closing short-lived (ca. 6 Ma) passages and the emergence of isolated topography in the Northern Andes. These geological events likely influenced the migration and/or isolation of biological populations. To better understand the paleogeography of the Miocene hinterland and foreland regions in the Northern Andes, we conducted a source-to-sink approach in the Magdalena Basin. This basin is located between the Central and Eastern Cordilleras of Colombia and contains an ample Miocene record, which includes Lower Miocene fine-grained strata and Middle Miocene to Pliocene coarsening-up strata. Our study presents a new data set that …
Gangliogenesis And Embryonic Development In Biomphalaria Glabrata, Subhiksha Srinivasan
Gangliogenesis And Embryonic Development In Biomphalaria Glabrata, Subhiksha Srinivasan
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Biomphalaria glabrata is an intermediate host for a parasitic species, Schistosoma mansoni, which can infect humans causing schistosomiasis. The majority of research conducted on these snails focuses on host-parasite relationships. Thus, very little is known regarding their nervous system, especially during embryonic and juvenile development. This project aims to investigate the transition from the embryonic nervous system consisting of a network of neurons to a developed ganglionic nervous system consisting of a separation between clusters of nerve cell bodies, or ganglia, and connectives. To investigate when this process, known as gangliogenesis, occurs, immunofluorescence is used to visualize the serotonergic nervous …

Physical Activity, Stress, & Sexual Behavior: The Role Of Exercise In Sexual Health Of Undergraduate Students, Emily Berkeley
Psychology Honors Papers
This Honors Thesis was conducted to examine and possibly influence the relationships between physical activity, stress, sexual self-concept, and sexual behavior in a sample of Connecticut College undergraduates. Prior research has shown conflicting results regarding physical activity, stress, and sexual behavior. While physical activity has been found to decrease stress and decrease sexual risk behavior in some contexts (Faurie et al., 2004; Wetherill & Fromme, 2007; Frauman, 1982; Park et al., 2021; Mor, et al., 2014), other research has also found that physical activity can increase both stress and sexual risk behavior (Vuori et al., 2011; Kulig et al., 2003; …
Women & Whistleblowing, Mary Saade
Women & Whistleblowing, Mary Saade
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
As more women in the United States take on leadership positions in the public and private sector, we have seen an influx of women whistleblowers. This Note examines whistleblower laws through a gender lens and offers insight to reveal why women blow the whistle, how women approach whistleblowing situations, and the effect current whistleblower laws have on women in the workforce.
This Note is divided into five parts. Part I includes an introduction and discusses competing definitions of whistleblower. Part II explores society’s differing perception of men and women whistleblowers and what may motivate women to report wrongdoings. Part III …
Multimodal Emotion Analysis With Focused Attention, Siddhi Kiran Bajracharya
Multimodal Emotion Analysis With Focused Attention, Siddhi Kiran Bajracharya
Dissertations and Theses
Emotion analysis, a subset of sentiment analysis, involves the study of a wide array of emotional indicators. In contrast to sentiment analysis, which restricts its focus to positive and negative sentiments, emotion analysis extends beyond these limitations to a diverse spectrum of emotional cues. Contemporary trends in emotion analysis lean toward multimodal approaches that leverage audiovisual and text modalities. However, implementing multimodal strategies introduces its own set of challenges, marked by a rise in model complexity and an expansion of parameters, thereby creating a need for a larger volume of data. This thesis responds to this challenge by proposing a …

The Meaning Of Optimum And Chosen Method Of Optimization Are Individually Defined, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest, Lawrence Shao, Jun Liu, Brian Sloboda
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Finding the true meaning of the assumption of rationality has attracted the attention of many scholars and brought forward major changes to the discipline of economics. However, the vast amount of literature shows that such attention has not only led to inconsistent interpretations, but also contradictory ones. To clear up these inconsistencies and contradictions, this paper looks at this assumption from a different angle – natural endowments of individuals and business firms, respectively. To do so successfully, this research goes far beyond all well-adopted methods of analysis and employs systems methods and such a logical reasoning that is parallel to …
Trauma Exposure Relates To Cortisol Levels For Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Alyssa Michniewicz
Trauma Exposure Relates To Cortisol Levels For Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Alyssa Michniewicz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Few studies have examined the impact of trauma for young children facing more generalized circumstances of economic hardship (Zimmerman & Messner, 2013) and an even smaller number have examined how experiences of trauma might influence children’s physiological stress response functioning in preschool context (Lee & Markey, 2022). The present study investigated the relation between trauma exposure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol in Head Start preschool for children facing economic hardship. The hypothesis was that trauma exposure would relate to elevations in baseline cortisol or stress levels. Participants were 50 children, ages 3 to 5, who attended a Head …
College Students' Emotional Response To Social Distancing Measures During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Diary Study, Jaycie Clerico
College Students' Emotional Response To Social Distancing Measures During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Diary Study, Jaycie Clerico
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Our qualitative diary study explores the emotional responses of college students to the social distancing protocols in place in the USA during the Covid-19 pandemic. Given the psychological benefit of social connection, it is important to examine how Covid-19 social distancing measures affected well-being. We focused on impacts on young adult college students. As part of an undergraduate senior capstone course at a medium-sized public university in the Eastern USA, psychology seniors were asked to keep diaries of their thoughts and feelings about the Covid-19 pandemic. This offered a unique opportunity to understand their first-person, real-time accounts and reactions to …

Background and objective: Whole body manipulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) consistently exerts profound effects on experimental atherosclerosis development. A deficit in the literature has been a lack of attention to the effects of sex. Also, based on data with gene-deleted mice, the site of RAS activity that influences lesion formation is at an unknown distant location. Since angiotensin (AngII) concentrations are high in kidney and the major components of the RAS are present in renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs), this study evaluated the role of the RAS in PTCs in atherosclerosis development.
Methods and results: Mice with an LDL …

Microdosing Psychedelics Under Local, State, And Federal Law, Mason Marks, I Glenn Cohen, Jonathan Perez-Reyzin, David Angelatos
Scholarly Publications
Microdosing psychedelic substances ("microdosing') is a growing trend that has gained significant media and scientific attention. The practice typically involves consuming low doses of psychedelics, such as psilocybin or lysergic acid diethylamide ("LSD'), two or three times per week, over the course of weeks or months. Many claim that microdosing improves attention, creativity, or mood. Some say it reduces pain as well as symptoms of anxiety, depression, and migraine or cluster headaches. Others fear it has not been proven safe or effective by randomized controlled trials. Nevertheless, the microdosing trend is growing against the backdrop of a broader psychedelic renaissance …
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The following project involves a systematic review of the scientific literature on neural and biological changes of mothers and fathers in parenthood. Until very recently, little scientific research was devoted to studying how bearing children affects a man or woman’s long-term biology. Over the last twenty years, studies of neuroplastic changes in new mothers show specific neural mechanisms responsible for altering the behaviors of mothers during and after pregnancy. These changes in neuroplasticity alter behavior in such a way that led to mothers requiring less sleep and being more prone to hearing the cries of their children. In addition to …

We examined whether co-injections of the cell-permeant D-cysteine analogues, D-cysteine ethyl ester (D-CYSee) and D-cysteine ethyl amide (D-CYSea), prevent acquisition of physical dependence induced by twice-daily injections of fentanyl, and reverse acquired dependence to these injections in freely-moving male Sprague Dawley rats. Injection of the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone HCl (NLX, 1.5 mg/kg, IV), elicited a series of withdrawal phenomena that included cardiorespiratory and behavioral responses, and falls in body weight and body temperature, in rats that received 5 or 10 injections of fentanyl (125 μg/kg, IV), and the same number of vehicle co-injections. Regarding the development of physical dependence, …

Recent advances in additive manufacturing have led to the development of innovative solutions for tissue regeneration. Hydrogel materials have gained significant attention for burn wound treatment in clinical practice among various advanced dressings due to their soothing and moisturizing activity. However, prolonged healing, pain, and traumatic removal due to the lack of long-term wound hydration are some of the challenges in the treatment of second-degree burn wounds. In this study, 3D-printed dressings were fabricated using gelatin, alginate, and bioactive borate glass (BBG) using an extrusion-based bioprinter. After ionic crosslinking, the 3D-printed dressings were characterized for mechanical properties, degradation rate, hydration …

Legionella pneumophila is a persistent opportunistic pathogen that poses a significant threat to domestic water systems. Previous studies suggest that copper (Cu) is an effective antimicrobial in water systems. A rapid and sensitive quantification method is desired to optimize the conditions of L. pneumophila treatment by Cu and to better understand the interaction mechanisms between Cu and cells. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive single cell (SC)-ICP-MS method to monitor L. pneumophila cell concentration and track their uptake of Cu. The SC-ICP-MS method showed excellent sensitivity (with a cell concentration detection limit of 1000 cells/mL), accuracy (good agreement …

Chronotropics: Caribbean Women Writing Spacetime, Odile Ferly, Tegan Zimmerman
Language, Literature, and Culture
This book deconstructs androcentric approaches to spacetime inherited from western modernity through its theoretical frame of the chronotropics. It sheds light on the literary acts of archival disruption, radical remapping, and epistemic marronnage by twenty-first-century Caribbean women writers to restore a connection to spacetime, expanding it within and beyond the region. Arguing that the chronotropics points to a vocation for social justice and collective healing, this pan-Caribbean volume returns to auhthonous ontologies and epistemologies to propose a poetics and politics of the chronotropics that is anticolonial, gender inclusive, pluralistic, and non-anthropocentric.

Station Aridity In Weather Monitoring Networks: Evidence From The Oklahoma Mesonet, Aseem Singh
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Many weather monitoring networks such as the Oklahoma Mesonet provide estimates of reference evapotranspiration (ETref) to facilitate weather-informed irrigation decisions. However, weather stations that collect the required input data to estimate ETref using the widely applied ASCE standardized ETref equation are not typically installed over a reference surface, defined as a large expanse of dense, well-watered, stress-free grass or alfalfa having a specified height, surface resistance, and albedo. The deviation of actual surface conditions in the surrounding environment of the weather stations from the reference condition creates station aridity effects that can lead to overestimation of …

When it comes to questions of fact in a legal context— particularly questions about measurement, association, and causality—courts should employ ordinary standards of applied science. Applied sciences generally develop along a path that proceeds from a basic scientific discovery about some natural process to the formation of a theory of how the process works and what causes it to fail, to the development of an invention intended to assess, repair, or improve the process, to the specification of predictions of the instrument’s actions and, finally, empirical validation to determine that the instrument achieves the intended effect. These elements are salient …
