Fostering Socio-Ecological Resilience To Wildfire By Interconnecting Knowledge Systems At Cal Poly Humboldt, Jeffrey M. Kane, Erin Kelly, Benjamin Graham, David Greene
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The wildfire-related challenges of Northern California and many other regions in the western United States are daunting in scope and magnitude. Ecologically and culturally salient solutions that limit the negative impacts of wildfire and promote resilience of human and ecological systems will require newer approaches. Through Cal Poly Humboldt and the Fire Resilience Institute, there is greater emphasis on the interconnection of knowledge systems across education, training, research, and management. Here we highlight several on-going efforts that seek to enhance the fire resilience workforce, promote socio-ecological resilience through interdisciplinary projects, and inform management through monitoring and research projects that intentionally …

S-Acylation Is A Key Regulator Of Orai1/Stim1-Mediated Store-Operated Calcium Entry In T Cells, Savannah J. West Diaz
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Orai1 and STIM1 proteins are the essential components of the Ca2+ release activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channel which is required for store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) in T cells and subsequent signaling events leading to T cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation. Plasma membrane (PM)-localized Orai1 is the pore-forming subunit of the CRAC channel, and STIM1 is the Ca2+ sensor localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane in quiescent T cells. T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation leads to depletion of ER Ca2+ stores resulting in Ca2+ no longer being bound to STIM1. This activates STIM1 by triggering …

Analysis Of Rna Processing Directly From Spatial Transcriptomics Data Reveals Previously Unknown Regulation, Julia Olivieri, Joshua Salzman
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
Technical advances have led to an explosion in the amount of biological data available in recent years, especially in the field of RNA sequencing. Specifically, spatial transcriptomics (ST) datasets, which allow each RNA molecule to be mapped to the 2D location it originated from within a tissue, have become readily available. Due to computational challenges, ST data has rarely been used to study RNA processing such as splicing or differential UTR usage. We apply the ReadZS and the SpliZ, methods developed to analyze RNA process in scRNA-seq data, to analyze spatial localization of RNA processing directly from ST data for …

A new wave of treatments has emerged to target nervous system alterations and maladaptive conceptualizations about pain for chronic low back pain. The acceptability of these treatments is still uncertain. We conducted a qualitative study alongside a randomized controlled trial to identify perceptions of facilitators or barriers to participation in a non-pharmacological intervention that resulted in clinically meaningful reductions across 12 months for disability compared to a sham intervention. We conducted semi-structured interviews with participants from the trial's active arm after they completed the 12-week program. We included a purposeful sample (baseline and clinical characteristics) (n = 20). We used …
Extending Aerial Surveys Beyond Target Marine Mammal Species: An Application Of Strip Transect Methodology To Humpback Whale And Dugong Abundance Estimation In Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia, Jennah Tucker
Theses : Honours
Aerial surveys are commonly used to estimate abundance of marine mammal populations, to detect trends over time and inform conservation management. Estimating abundance in areas critical to a species’ survival and reproduction is important to assess that population’s status and its vulnerability. Aerial surveys allow relatively large areas to be covered over short periods of time which can be important for highly mobile species with wide-ranging movement patterns such as marine mammals. While aerial surveys are often designed for specific target species, information on additional non-target species is often recorded, as surveys are generally infrequent due to expense and logistical …

Authors examine the impact of honors education on four early career scholars who each spent two years in a postdoctoral position (2017–2023), highlighting how initial in-depth exposure to honors curricula and culture positively influences professional identity and teaching practice. Fellowships in a Teaching, Research, and Mentoring (TRM) Program offer nascent scholars from a range of disciplines the opportunity to work with students, extend curricular offerings, and launch career trajectories in a variety of ways. Accounts of these experiences should encourage honors program administrators to look to the ranks of early career scholars as desirable instructors.

Peer review exercises are an essential part of many educational pedagogy models and have been shown to successfully provide undergraduate students with requisite active learning and critical reflection skills. Teaching the peer review process in an interdisciplinary honors research methods course, however, presents its own set of challenges. As students are exposed to new processes of editorial review, they are also tasked with evaluating material across subjects and discipline areas, making subjective components of editing more difficult. Authors describe a scaffolded model of peer review piloted in an interdisciplinary, upper-level honors research methods and ethics course and provide qualitative analyses …

Resisting Disciplinarity: Curriculum Mapping And Transdisciplinarity, Megan Snider Bailey
Resisting Disciplinarity: Curriculum Mapping And Transdisciplinarity, Megan Snider Bailey
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
American higher education relies on a taxonomy of knowledge stemming from Puritan ways of thinking and knowing—a disciplinary classification system that sorts “questions asked” and “answers possible” into epistemic categories. This paper interrogates the notion of disciplinarity to better understand the arbitrariness of epistemic divisions and the harm that these decisions cause. The author explores transdisciplinarity as an emerging concept in honors education, one which rejects boundaries and explores problems through multiple, competing perspectives. Transdisciplinary pedagogical approaches offer honors educators a mechanism for pivoting teaching and learning away from outdated assumptions of honors as elitist, giving honors students a liberating …
Regime Change As Opportunity: A Case For A Radically Inclusive Response, Massimo Rondolino
Regime Change As Opportunity: A Case For A Radically Inclusive Response, Massimo Rondolino
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
The author proposes a radically inclusive approach to reimagining and rebuilding honors education at a time of institutional change, suggesting that when directives do not include a clear vision for academic curricula in practice and orientation (and instead focus on budgetary bottom lines and cost-maximization), honors practitioners benefit from an invaluable opportunity to exert self-determination and agency. This essay describes the effective rebuilding of an honors program by leveraging faculty experience to establish a collaborative community framed within a model of student self-governance and grounded in principles of mindful leadership, anti-cruelty mentality, and maternal thinking.

Tagging Atg5 With An Epitope Tag To Measure The Amount Of Atg12-5 Conjugation In Atg10 Mutants, Sophie Campbell
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Autophagy is a necessary recycling process that occurs in cells, but the functions of the proteins that carry this out are not completely understood. The protein ATG10 has a distinct role in forming autophagosomes, large double membrane vesicles necessary for this process. ATG10 forms a covalent bond between the proteins ATG12 and ATG5 but its final effect on autophagosome formation is still unclear. We are using DNA manipulation techniques to add a myc epitope tag to yeast ATG5 which will allow us to measure the effect of atg10 mutants on ATG12-5 conjugation via Western Blot. These results will help us …

Surface-Engineered Mineral Particles For Gated Drug Delivery, Gene Transfer And Sunscreen Formulations, Mahadi Hasan
Surface-Engineered Mineral Particles For Gated Drug Delivery, Gene Transfer And Sunscreen Formulations, Mahadi Hasan
Dissertations and Theses
Surface-engineered nanomaterials have recently garnered wide attention for their huge biomedical applications. The surface functionalization of nanoparticles by desired chemical groups and coatings imparts unique properties to be used in therapeutic applications. Herein, we reported the biological and biomedical applications of three mineral particles: calcium carbonate nanoparticles, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The ability of pristine and surface-modified calcium carbonate particles to scatter UV-light significantly depends on the particle’s size, its surface chemical composition, and can be close to the SPF values of commercial sunscreens. These nontoxic particles are a promising component of biocompatible sunscreens free of the traditional …

Using Drone Imagery To Map Intertidal Oyster Reefs Along Florida’S Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Michael Espriella, Vincent Lecours
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs offer vital ecosystem services and support economically and culturally important fisheries. However, environmental and anthropogenic stressors have led to significant decline in oyster reef coverage globally and locally in places like the Suwannee Sound in Florida, USA. Current monitoring methods are insufficient for timely and accurate assessment of oyster resources in the region. Here we demonstrate how drone imagery can be used to delineate intertidal oyster reef coverage rapidly and reliably. The high spatial resolution offered by drone imagery enables accurate delineations. We use a segmentation algorithm to delineate reefs, which produces consistently …
Investigating Smooth Muscle Myosin Dynamics And Assembly In Physiology And Pathology, Maggie Bennett
Investigating Smooth Muscle Myosin Dynamics And Assembly In Physiology And Pathology, Maggie Bennett
Dissertations
Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surround many blood vessels throughout the body, where they dynamically alter vessel diameter to regulate blood pressure, provide structural integrity, and absorb shock on a beat-to-beat timescale. As smooth muscle function fails, profound vascular disease ensues, often with tragic results- even death. Smooth muscle myosin 2 (SM2) is the dominant motor protein that actuates contractility and allows SMCs to perform these vital functions. To function, SM2 monomers dynamically assemble into filaments, which upon SMC activation, associate with filamentous actin to drive contractility. Despite the critical contribution of SM2 to SMC function, foundational aspects of SM2 assembly …

Investigating The Genomic Distribution And Potential Contribution Of Retrotransposable Elements In Relation To Their Potential Impact On Genome Function And Predisposition To Human Diseases., Randa Aweis Ali
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Abstract Investigating the genomic distribution and potential contribution of retrotransposable elements in relation to their potential impact on genome function and predisposition to human diseases. Randa Aweis Ali Active retrotransposable elements (RTEs) provide a continuous source of genomic diversity in humans. The potential impact of a novel RTE insertion depends on its genomic location. Previous studies investigating the landscape of polymorphic RTEs report their higher fraction in functional regions compared with fixed elements, thereby highlighting the potential impact of RTE activity on genome function (GF). However, studies have only recently begun incorporating RTE variants (RTEV) in association with complex human …

An Analysis Of Department Of The Air Force Bird Strikes And Precipitation, Jason Powell Mas, Cfmei, Atp
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This study explored the relationship between precipitation, the amount of time between precipitation events, bird strike risk, and the agricultural zone related to Department of the Air Force (DAF) aircraft operations. Certain bird species demonstrated a relationship between agricultural zones, precipitation, and length of time after a precipitation event and when an aircraft strike occurred. The types and frequency of bird strikes depend highly on the region and species struck. The Poisson regression revealed Cathartiformes as significantly struck by the DAF aircraft more often and can be predicted based on agricultural zone and precipitation. A binary regression did not demonstrate …
