Enhanced Fabrication Of Microdroplet Generator Nozzle Arrays: Optimizing Koh Etching For Microfluidic Applications, Hongyu Bai

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Ultrasonic microdroplet generators are useful devices with broad applications ranging from aerosolized drug delivery to three-dimensional (3D) printing-based additive manufacturing. One such technology comprises a microfabricated array of nozzles with droplet production driven by a piezoelectric transducer. The present study focuses on refining a critical fabrication step, anisotropic wet etching of pyramidal nozzles using a basic potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Given the integral role of nozzle geometry in device operation, high-precision techniques including Reactive Ion Etching (RIE), Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE), and KOH wet etching were employed. A tapering geometry is preferred for acoustic wave focusing and efficient droplet …

A Bioinspired Astrocyte-Derived Coating Promotes The In Vitro Proliferation Of Human Neural Stem Cells While Maintaining Their Stemness, Andrea C. Jimenez-Vergara, Jacob Avina, Travis Jackson Block, Anne Sheldrake, Carson Koch, Anna Gonzalez, Jennifer Steele, Ana M. Díaz-Lasprilla, Dany J. Munoz-Pinto

Engineering Faculty Research

The repair of neuronal tissue is a challenging process due to the limited proliferative capacity of neurons. Neural stem cells (NSCs) can aid in the regeneration process of neural tissue due to their high proliferation potential and capacity to differentiate into neurons. The therapeutic potential of these cells can only be achieved if sufficient cells are obtained without losing their differentiation potential. Toward this end, an astrocyte-derived coating (HAc) was evaluated as a promising substrate to promote the proliferation of NSCs. Mass spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the HAc. The proliferation rate and the expression of …

Aging And Urinary Control: Alterations In The Brain-Bladder Axis., Cara C Hardy, Ron Korstanje

Faculty Research 2023

Age-associated alterations in bladder control affect millions of older adults, with a heavy burden added to families both economically and in quality of life. Therapeutic options are limited with poor efficacy in older adults, lending to a growing need to address the gaps in our current understanding of urinary tract aging. This review summarizes the current knowledge of age-associated alterations in the structure and function of the brain-bladder axis and identifies important gaps in the field that have yet to be addressed. Urinary aging is associated with decreased tissue responsiveness, decreased control over the voiding reflex, signaling dysfunction along the …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Postpartum Care: Creating A Postpartum Screening Tool, Julianna Bourland Dec 2023

Occupational Therapy's Role In Postpartum Care: Creating A Postpartum Screening Tool, Julianna Bourland

Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones

This capstone aimed to identify “Occupational Therapy’s Role in Postpartum Care.” The literature revealed that due to an abrupt transition into the role of a mother, engaging in occupations, the musculoskeletal system and maternal mental health are factors impacted. OT’s role in postpartum care identified in the research includes support in routines, roles, breastfeeding, education on ergonomics, adaptive equipment, home modifications, and interventions to relieve and prevent pain while increasing strength and stability. However, due to a gap in limited screening tools for this population, many women do not receive treatment for impacted factors. This capstone project utilized program development …

Clinical Practice Skills For Incorporating Animal-Assisted Therapy In Occupational Therapy, Erin Wilhelm

Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones

The aim of my capstone project was to advance the field of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and promote the incorporation of AAT within occupational therapy (OT) services. Existing research notably supports the implementation of AAT in OT practice in many settings and for a wide variety of diagnoses to promote occupational performance, build therapeutic rapport, and encourage motivation and engagement in therapy, but stronger evidence is needed to promote the incorporation of AAT (Andreason et al., 2017; Fine et al., 2019b). Despite the growth of AAT over the past two decades, there are few resources tailored specifically to the implementation of …

Keeping And Challenging Familial Attachments: The Bakla Within Contemporary Mainstream Filipino Film, Abraham James A. Mata

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Throughout Filipino television and film, it is difficult to ignore the almost always apparent bakla. The bakla, often portrayed as either an effeminate gay man or a trans woman, largely appears as a side character in many Filipino films. Many depictions of this queer figure in the past have cast them as merely comedic relief or perverted figures. However, within the past two decades of the 21st century, many Filipino films have been produced with a central bakla character. Through an analysis of five mainstream films from the years of 2013-2023, this project is seeking to answer how mainstream depictions …

Salivary Duct Carcinoma Arising In A Warthin Tumor Of The Parotid Gland: A Rare Case Report With Review Of Literature And Pd-L1 Expression, Kaitlyn J. Nielson, Gamaliel Lorenzo, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Warthin's tumor is the second most common neoplasm of the parotid gland and consists of 2 components, including lymphoid stroma and glandular epithelium. Malignant transformation in this tumor is mostly seen in the lymphoid component; however, the carcinomatous transformation of the epithelial component is extremely rare. Cases of latter reported in the literature include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, oncocytic carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma. We describe an extremely rare case of salivary duct carcinoma arising in a Warthin tumor in a 64-year-old male. Patient presented with an enlarging left parotid mass, biopsy of which showed salivary …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and is also the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the USA. Understanding the mechanisms of growth and progression of CRC is essential to improve treatment. Macronutrients such as glucose are energy source for a cell. Many tumor cells exhibit increased aerobic glycolysis. Increased tissue micronutrient iron levels in both mice and humans are also associated with increased colon tumorigenesis. However, if iron drives colon carcinogenesis via affecting glucose metabolism is still not clear. Here we found the intracellular glucose levels in tumor colonoids were significantly increased after iron treatment.

Biochemical Analyses Of Udgx-A Crosslinking Uracil-Dna Glycosylase, Chuan Liang Dec 2023

Biochemical Analyses Of Udgx-A Crosslinking Uracil-Dna Glycosylase, Chuan Liang

All Dissertations

DNA base damage is common due to exposure to various endogenous and exogenous factors. To repair the base lesions, such as uracil from cytosine deamination, enzymes from the uracil-DNA glycosylase (UDG) superfamily are critical, which can recognize the damaged base and initiate the base excision repair (BER) pathway. There used to be six families of proteins identified in the UDG superfamily until a new member, UDGX, was found in Mycobacterium smegmatis, which is a unique DNA-crosslinking UDG. In this dissertation work, a series of biochemical analyses of the newly found UDGX are performed, including the analyses of structures, functions, …

Fall Field Report, August–November 2023, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

As in the last few fall seasons, late departure dates continue to increase in number. This is often attributed to a warming climate but may also result from increased observer activity and usage of eBird. Late dates are probably the most important aspect of this report, most prominent the record late fall dates for Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Sanderling, Bank Swallow, and Cassin’s Sparrow. Although these species are taxonomically diverse, there were species group concentrations of late dates, notably among shorebirds. Examples were Marbled Godwit for which the four latest reports this fall were four of the latest six fall dates on …

Insecta Mundi

Green spaces represent the only natural areas in several cities around the world, providing good shelters for the local fauna. Based on this premise, many ecological studies have been conducted focused on these areas. Most of these works are about insects, particularly butterflies and beetles. Our study is centered on a different group: green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). These insects exhibit a similar feeding behavior to some other groups, such as beetles. We estimated diversity, richness, distribution, abundance and similarity employing two methods: sweep netting and suction trapping. Also, oviposition hosts were identified in 20 different green spaces. Approximately 740 specimens …

Genomics-Based Taxonomic Rearrangement Of Achlyodini And Carcharodini (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Pyrginae), Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin

Insecta Mundi

Genomic analysis of Pyrginae Burmeister, 1878 (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae Latreille, 1809) with an emphasis on the tribes Achlyodini Burmeister, 1878 and Carcharodini Verity, 1940 reveals many inconsistencies between the resulting phylogeny and the current classification. These problems are corrected by proposing new taxa, changing the ranks of others, or synonymizing them, and transferring species between genera. As a result, five subtribes, one genus, 20 subgenera, and one species are proposed as new: Cyclosemiina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Cyclosemia Mabille, 1878), Ilianina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Iliana E. Bell, 1937), Nisoniadina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Nisoniades Hübner, [1819]), …

Insecta Mundi

The interactions between the lacewing Ceraeochrysa claveri (Navás) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) larva and the coconut mealybug Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) were recorded. The third-instar lacewing larva constructed a dorsal packet using mealybug wax from both male pupal cases and the bodies of adult females. Surprisingly, live nymphs were also frequently placed into the dorsal packet. Prey mealybugs were discarded and not incorporated into the packet after consumption. When disturbed, adult female mealybugs reflex bled from their dorsal ostioles, contacting the mouthparts of the lacewing. The lacewing quickly retreated to clean the mouthparts on the substrate, providing further evidence that ostiolar …

Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) and Dysmicoccus neobrevipes Beardsley are major pests of pineapples, ornamentals, and vegetable crops in many countries around the world. The potential distribution of these mealybug pests into South Korea remains a prime concern because of their high incidence in interceptions screened during inspection. Hence, these species prompted a modelling effort to assess their potential risk of introduction. Potential risk maps were developed for these pests with the CLIMEX model based on occurrence records under environmental data. The potential distribution of these pests in South Korea in the 2020s, 2050s and 2090s is projected based on the RCP …

Nebraska Bird Review

Eminent radiologist Benjamin H. Orndoff, eulogizing an esteemed colleague some months after his death, noted that Isador Simon Trostler (1869–1957) “as a lad . . . became interested in ornithology and herpetology, sending accounts of his observations and explorations to natural history magazines up to the late [18]90s.” Understandably more interested in Trostler’s role as a “pioneer in radiology,” Orndoff had no more to say about the natural history pursuits of one of Nebraska’s most notable early ornithologists, one of the founders 125 years ago of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union.

Conversely, we birders have known little or nothing of Trostler’s …

The Hidden Quality Cost Resulting From Food And Drug Administration Inspection Failures In Mid To Large Companies, Jonathan Walston

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An approach to identify and validate hidden quality costs associated with regulatory non-compliance from inspections by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not been previously researched. This dissertation presents a robust quantitative methodology to analyze the daily cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) on populations of publicly traded mid-to-large cap companies around FDA inspection events having negative outcomes. Three hypotheses have been tested focusing only on inspection events from companies falling under the biologics product type category. Hypothesis 1 states that there is no statistically significant correlation between the sum of CAR around inspection windows for such companies when a negative …

The Discovery Of Diverse Picophytoplankton Populations In The Columbia And Willamette Rivers Using Flow Cytometry, Kylee M. Lamberson

Chemistry Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses

As important primary producers, picophytoplankton determine the flow of carbon and energy in aquatic ecosystems. Picocyanobacteria are one picophytoplankton group known to be dominant in oceans and lakes, but they are still poorly understood in river systems. This project examined picophytoplankton communities in two distinct river systems: the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in Portland, Oregon. I aimed to characterize and quantify the picophytoplankton populations in the context of the environmental conditions of the two rivers. I used flow cytometry to detect cells based on their relative size and pigment fluorescence. I sampled nearly weekly for ten months to capture population …

Advancing ecological restoration assessments requires a more detailed consideration of species interactions and ecosystem processes. Most restoration projects rely on a few metrics not always directly linked with ecological theory. Here, we used Odum's theory of ecosystem development to assess and compare the ecosystem structure and services of created marshes (4–6 years old) with preexisting, reference marshes in a brackish water region of the Mississippi River Delta. We built ecosystem models for created and reference marshes that integrated large datasets of stomach contents, stable isotopes, and taxa abundances. Despite strong resemblance in community structure, created marshes were at an earlier …
