Health Sciences
Introduction: Multimodal management of rectal cancer, combining neoadjuvant Radio chemotherapy followed by total Mesorectal therapy (TME), has been shown to improve locoregional control. However, the histological response is variable independently of the initial tumor stage. Some recent data suggest the usefulness of the lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting the histological response to neoadjuvant therapy. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the complete histological response (pCR) after neoadjuvant radio chemotherapy and biological parameters (LMR, NLR and PLR) in rectal cancer patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in three Moroccan …

Effects Of Some Control Methods On Johnson Grass And Yield Components In Tomato Fields, Tamer Üstüner, Muhammad Al Sakran, Menderes Üstüner
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Johnson grass is one of the most dangerous and difficult to control weeds. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different control methods on Johnson grass in tomato fields and to investigate the effect of these methods on the phenological stages and yield indicators of tomatoes. The study was carried out during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The experiment treatments were as follows: hand hoe, mulch, preemergence herbicide pendimethalin (5 L/ha), postemergence herbicide fluazifop-P-butyl (1 L/ha), and control parcels. The number of flowers, the number of branches, and the length of the plant were determined in …

Lewis Honors College Research Data: Linguistics
The UKY Slang Collection Project is an ongoing effort (Fall 2021-present) to document the use of slang (group-specific language of informal register) primarily among college students at the University of Kentucky. The project is administered by Dr. Zada Komara (Lewis Honors College) as part of HON 140 Knowledge and Society, a foundational seminar about epistemology and ontology. This original research is performed by Lewis Honors College students. The project aims to document slang, both ephemeral and persistent, as a means of investigating students’ lived experiences of college, language evolution, and social identities among UKY student communities. Slang in the …

Biologics are a fast-growing therapeutic class, with intertwined pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, affected by the abundance and function of the FcRn receptor. While many investigators assume adequacy of classical models, such as allometry, for pharmacokinetic characterization of biologics, advocates of physiologically-based pharmacokinetics (PBPK) propose consideration of known systems parameters that affect the fate of biologics to enable a priori predictions, which go beyond allometry. The aim of this study was to deploy a systems-informed modelling approach to predict the disposition of Fc-containing biologics. We used global proteomics to quantify the FcRn receptor [p51 and β2-microglobulin (B2M) subunits] in 167 …

Suffering In Search Of A Methodological Frame: Interdisciplinarity In The Context Of The Gendered Impact Of Climate Migration, Becky L. Jacobs
Suffering In Search Of A Methodological Frame: Interdisciplinarity In The Context Of The Gendered Impact Of Climate Migration, Becky L. Jacobs
Scholarly Works
In this essay, the author places the gendered impact of climate migration within the methodological frame of scholars such as geographers Sylvia Winters and Doreen Massey, historian Achille Mbembe, philosopher Gilles Deleuze, philosopher and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari, and anthropologist Tim Ingold. The author discusses the importance of interdisciplinarity and describes the gender-specific risks related to climate displacement before delving into theory.

Time Is A Flat Circle: Lessons From Past And Present Conspiracy Theories, Lucille A. Jewel
Scholarly Works
This essay analyzes how conspiracy theories were viewed in the 1990s, particularly in the context of the then-existing debate over racial differences in perception, and how they are dealt with today, where prevalent conspiracy theory adherents are White and conservative (QAnon, Pizzagate, and widespread voter fraud) in the 2020 election). In the 1990s, conflict over conspiracy theories was part of a larger culture war involving critical race theory, conspiracy thinking, truth, reason, and post-modern theory. These cultural flashpoints are obviously still with us today. But now, high-profile persons holding false, unreasonable beliefs often hail from the right and are assailed …

Refugia Gardening: Putting It Into Practice, David Koetje, Jason Hill
Summer Research
Calvin has two community gardens: one behind the house on Hampshire and one near the Knollcrest East Apartments. Each year, the plots in both gardens are rented out and used to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. To attract pollinators and provide interest to the Hampshire Garden, we decided to design and plant a refugia garden.

This Study Investigates the Mechanical Behavior of Biogenic Carbonate Sands from Puerto Rico at Grain-Scale Level. Micro-Computed Tomography Has Also Been Used to Get Insights on the Internal Structure of These Particles Before and after Loading. the Crushing Strength of These Particles Are Smaller Comparing to the Values Reported for Silica Sands. It Has Also Been Shown that These Particles Have Complex Internal Structure Including a Network of Pores Connected with Channels. This Study Also Demonstrates the Effect of Intragrain Structure of Biogenic Carbonate Sands and Shows How Internal Grain Structure Plays a Role on Particle Fracture.

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Optical Sensor Technology To Scale Cell Culture Platforms, Mandar Makwana
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Optical Sensor Technology To Scale Cell Culture Platforms, Mandar Makwana
KGI Theses and Dissertations
Different cell culture vessels ranging from micro scale to laboratory scale to commercial scale play critical role in upstream process development for biologics manufacturing. Based on the mode of operation, cell culture vessels have different hydrodynamic environments, making it challenging to scale. Integrated approaches using computational tools supported by experimental studies can overcome these challenges. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one such tool that can simulate hydrodynamics within the cell culture vessels and can provide insights at macro and micro-scale. Accuracy of a CFD model significantly depends on the fluid model and assumptions. Traditionally, simple two-equation fluid models were developed …

Crafting U.S. Foreign Policy Towards China Through Congress: An Examination Of Arlen Specter & Congressional Delegations To China, Gabriel C. Kelly

Scholars and policy analysts are currently engaged in an ongoing debate about what the United States’ relationship with the People’s Republic of China will be.[1] According to international relations scholar Bruce W. Jentleson, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has, “…the world’s second largest economy… the third largest amount [of military spending] in the world, [and is] the world’s most populous country.”[2] Perspectives on the U.S. relationship with the PRC range from “confrontation” to “cooperation,”[3] and congressional representatives can potentially shape this debate on China through congressional delegation trips. Congressional delegation trips are an underexamined phenomenon in …
