Objectives We estimate adult age distributions from Unar 1 and Unar 2, two late Umm an-Nar (2400-2100 BCE) tombs in the modern-day Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. These collective tombseach contained hundreds of skeletons in commingled, fragmented, and variably cremated states. Previous studies placed the vast majority of this mortuary community in a generalized “adult” category, as have most analyses of similar tombs from this period. We sought to test how adult age estimation methods compare in identifying young, middle, and old age individuals in commingled assemblages.

The Relationship Of Developmental Stages In Adults In Psychotherapy To Different Types Of Mental Health Symptoms, Shannon E. Gasparro
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we examine the pattern of mental health symptoms across adult development using data from a community-based clinic in Queens, NY. Age was represented by three qualitative stages, “early adulthood,” “middle adulthood,” and “late adulthood.” Early adulthood has been characterized as a period of heightened emotional instability, with less clear long-term commitments to romantic relationships, career paths, work, and living arrangements. Middle adulthood has been characterized as a more emotionally stable period in terms of relations with friends and family and social roles. Finally, late adults, although also viewed as more emotionally regulated, may again experience greater interpersonal …

The absorption, light scattering, and anti-Stoke’s fluorescence of chlorophyll and closely related sodium copper chlorophyllin were examined in various solutions with a wide range of refractive index and permittivity. It was evident that radiative photo electron decay corresponded to low permittivity solvents, but not to solvent refractive index. Additionally, non-radiative decay was dominant in high permittivity solvents. The properties suggest evolution has provided plants with an ability to redirect light to the chlorophyll in the high permittivity (water) photosynthesis center. Exploratory solar cells exploiting lifetime switching were developed and tested, wherein strong photovoltaic response was exhibited, along with the unique …
Development Of Whole-Cell Biosensors For Early Detection Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sharona Adina Priyev
Development Of Whole-Cell Biosensors For Early Detection Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sharona Adina Priyev
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial in preventing progression to advanced disease stages and in improving survival rates of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Using synthetic biology tools, we aim to integrate synthetic biological circuits into the construction of a novel, whole-cell biosensor (WCB) that will detect salivary biomarkers of OSCC. In treating biological parts and genetic circuits as modular pieces, we can intentionally rearrange selected domains of interest to create new transcription factors that will enable the detection of molecules of interest. Our end-goal is the creation of portable devices carrying living cells that express our synthetic genetic circuits …

A Life Of Leadership, A Call To Do Better: A Hermeneutic Inquiry Into The Lived Experience Of An Educator - Raw Data, Scott F. Gregory
Teacher Education Research Data
Eliciting lived experiences, we seek to identify those experiences that have shaped the lived practice of a career and desire to answer: (1) How have experiences informed a career? (2) What does the lived educational experiences of an educator portend for the future of education? This inquiry incorporates the lived past experiences of the co-authors. Additionally, we seek to offer a path forward for the future of the profession that we love and have been grateful to experience.
This data was part of a hermeneutic inquiry research project involving myself and my father, Dr. Leonard L. Gregory. The data was …

Interfacial Issues And Modification Of Solid Electrolyte Interphase For Li Metal Anode In Liquid And Solid Electrolytes, Oh B. Chae, Brett L. Lucht
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The high energy density required for the next generation of lithium batteries will likely be enabled by a shift toward lithium metal anode from the conventional intercalation-based anode such as graphite. However, several critical challenges for Li metal originate from its highly reactive nature and the hostless reaction of deposition and stripping impede the practical use of Li metal as an anode. The role of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is very important for the Li metal anode where the SEI must protect the dynamically changing surface of the Li metal. Since the SEI-generating reaction mechanisms for the two different …
Rapid Growth In Late Cretaceous Sea Turtles Reveals Life History Strategies Similar To Extant Leatherbacks, Laura E. Wilson
Rapid Growth In Late Cretaceous Sea Turtles Reveals Life History Strategies Similar To Extant Leatherbacks, Laura E. Wilson
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Modern sea turtle long bone osteohistology has been surprisingly well-studied, as it is used to understand sea turtle growth and the timing of life history events, thus informing conservation decisions. Previous histologic studies reveal two distinct bone growth patterns in extant sea turtle taxa, with Dermochelys (leatherbacks) growing faster than the cheloniids (all other living sea turtles). Dermochelys also has a unique life history compared to other sea turtles (large size, elevated metabolism, broad biogeographic distribution, etc.) that is likely linked to bone growth strategies. Despite the abundance of data on modern sea turtle bone growth, extinct sea turtle osteohistology …

Comments On “Is Biological Death Final? Recomputing The Drake-S Equation For Postmortem Survival Of Consciousness”, Christine Simmonds-Moore
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The application of the Drake-S equation to the aggregated data suggestive of survival found 30.3% of unexplained variance in the data when other factors were applied to the dataset (including living agent psi, LAP). A number of points are raised in this commentary. These include 1. the aggregated estimate for LAP should factor in implicit psi studies (among others); 2. it is difficult to ascertain the source of psi if psi is not a signal that is caused, but rather an emergent property of a connected system; 3. there may be shared variance between sources that are attributed differently in …
On The Ethics Of Selling Psychic Services, Jeffrey Moriarty
On The Ethics Of Selling Psychic Services, Jeffrey Moriarty
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In many places, it is possible to buy psychic services, including tarot card, palm, and mediumship readings. Yet we have powerful evidence that psychic abilities do not exist. This paper asks whether psychic services should be for sale. I begin by considering whether psychics deceive or mislead buyers. Next, I consider a harm-based argument against the sale of psychic services. Finally, I consider an argument in favor of their sale that appeals to expressive considerations. I conclude with a tentative policy recommendation: the sale of psychic services should be permitted. This is so even though much of the money spent …

"Children's Equality Law" In The Age Of Parents' Rights, Catherine E. Smith
Scholarly Articles
In this Article, I will briefly highlight the meager doctrinal landscape for children's equal protection rights. I will then argue that the current family law system, relying on parents to act in the best interest of children to protect them, falls far short in a society built upon group-based hierarchies. Sometimes, parents will not have the political power to act in their children's best interest to intervene to stop their unequal treatment at the hands of state and private actors. In fact, several landmark cases demonstrate that often out of necessity, children's rights play a pivotal role in ensuring our …

Next Generation Science Standards* Crosscutting Concept 4. Systems and system models. A system is an organized group of related objects or components; models can be used for understanding and predicting the behavior of systems.
Youth will identify components of network graphs and interpret relationships modeled by the network graphs. They will develop curiosity (ask questions) about why there are connections in some places and not in other places; why there are different colors; shapes, and sizes, and how/if the model helps us understand the phenomenon.

Decline Is Not Inevitable: Changes In Science Identity During The Progression Through A U.S. Middle School Among Boys And Girls, Julia Mcquillan, Patricia Wonch Hill, Joseph C. Jochman, Grace Kelly
Worlds of Connections Resources
In the United States, science capital is important for navigating many aspects of life. Yet during middle school, science interest declines more for girls than boys. It is unclear, however, whether science identity also declines during the middle school years and if there are differences by gender. The authors advance prior research by modeling changes in science identity and associations with changes in identity-relevant characteristics using growth curve analyses on four waves of data from 760 middle school youth. For girls and boys, science identity changes over time; about 40 percent of the variance is within-person change, with the remainder …

The investment of time and resources for developing better strategies is key to dealing with future pandemics. In this work, we recreated the situation of COVID-19 across the year 2020, when the pandemic started spreading worldwide. We conducted experiments to predict the coronavirus cases for the 50 countries with the most cases during 2020. We compared the performance of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, such as long-short-term memory networks, against that of online incremental machine learning algorithms. To find the best strategy, we performed experiments to test three different approaches. In the first approach (single-country), we trained each model using data …

Japanese beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Popillia japonica Newman, is an invasive beetle introduced from Asia to the United States in the early 1900s. It was first detected in New Jersey and later distributed in 28 states in the United States (Fig 1). In Tennessee, the beetle population was first detected in 1936, and about 80 counties in Tennessee have been infested by their establishment. Adult beetles feed on over 300 plant species, including foliage, fruits, and flowers. It is a significant pest of turfgrass, and ornamental and horticultural crops in the eastern United States. Adults and larvae aggregate on the plants …

The ‘Natural’ Disaster: How Americans’ Obsession With ‘Natural’ Foods Encourages Misinformation, Stifles Innovation, And Harms The Planet, Jillian Guernsey
UC Law Environmental Journal
Every day, consumers are bombarded with conflicting messages about what they should and should not eat. In an effort to make healthy food choices, consumers often flock to food products that boast “organic,” “all-natural,” or “non-GMO” labels. But are all of these foods really better? In this note, I discuss the confusion surrounding “natural” food and how it has hindered progress toward more productive and sustainable food systems. First, I examine the hazy definition of “natural” foods and explain why consumers continue to demand natural foods despite their environmental impacts. Second, I discuss how consumers’ single-minded focus on natural foods …

Expression Optimization Of The Gst-Gfp Fusion Protein Through The Alteration Of Induction Conditions, Matthew J. Vaccaro
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This research sought to determine which induction condition resulted in the greatest GST-GFP fusion protein expression. It will hopefully serve as a guide for future researchers trying to produce their own recombinant protein containing GST and GFP-tags. The CDNB Enzyme Assay was used to determine the quantity of GST-GFP fusion protein present and tested three variables: IPTG concentration, duration, and temperature of induction. The findings showed that IPTG concentration, temperature, and induction duration all had a significant impact on protein expression. Induction temperatures of 20 °C and 25 °C showed better protein expression at IPTG concentrations of 1.0 mM IPTG …
