Connecting Distinct Realms Along Multiple Dimensions: A Meta-Ecosystem Resilience Perspective, David G. Angeler, Jani Heino, Juan Rubio-Ríos, J. Jesús Casas

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Resilience research is central to confront the sustainability challenges to ecosystems and human societies in a rapidly changing world. Given that social-ecological problems span the entire Earth system, there is a critical need for resilience models that account for the connectivity across intricately linked ecosystems (i.e., freshwater, marine, terrestrial, atmosphere). We present a resilience perspective of meta-ecosystems that are connected through the flow of biota, matter and energy within and across aquatic and terrestrial realms, and the atmosphere. We demonstrate ecological resilience sensu Holling using aquatic-terrestrial linkages and riparian ecosystems more generally. A discussion of applications in riparian ecology and …

The Most Environmentally Sustainable Diet For Adolescents In Terms Of Land Use, Food Waste, And Greenhouse Gas Emissions., Lina Elsehelly

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

The current food system is directly responsible for much environmental damage including severe climate change, biodiversity loss, and land scarcity. This research aims to find some strategies to mitigate these damages through diet by specifically targeting adolescents because they are potential problem-solvers. This period is also when personality and habits are articulated. By focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and food waste, a more environmentally sustainable diet can be formulated. The key findings of the research can be summarized by reducing ultra-processed foods, choosing sustainably produced food, generally reducing meat consumption from the current rate, substituting red and …

Continuous Consumption Of Whey Protein Affects Motor And Cognitive Functions In A Mouse Model Of Cow’S Milk Hypersensitivity, Geetika Verma

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Hypersensitization to a food allergen can occur in the absence of immediate allergic reactions, a condition referred to as asymptomatic sensitization. Using mice asymptomatically sensitized to a bovine whey allergen, β-lactoglobulin (BLG, Bos d 5), we have previously shown that chronic exposure to the allergen results in behavior changes with increased neuroinflammation and cortical demyelination. However, whether allergen avoidance can resolve these pathologies is unknown. Thus, we aimed to compare immunological and behavioral changes in sham- or BLG-sensitized mice with or without the removal of dietary whey after the mice had consumed either a control diet (CTL) or a whey-protein-containing …

Continued Food-Allergen Consumption Exacerbates Beta-Amyloid Accumulation In Allergen-Sensitized Appnl-G-Fmice., Afrina Brishti

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, with β-amyloid(Aβ) plaque deposition being one of the hallmark pathologies. However, the etiology of AD remains elusive. While chronic inflammation from recurrent infections or injury seems to contribute to AD development, it is unclear whether atopic diseases, such as allergies, are associated with AD. We previously reported that continuous consumption of a whey protein(WP) -containing diet led to lasting neuro inflammation in C57BL/6J mice that were sensitized but tolerant to a bovine milk allergen, β-lactoglobulin (BLG;Bosd5). Thus, we hypothesized that the persisting neuroinflammation due to repeated allergen consumption would exacerbate AD …

Using Cyanobacteria And Other Phytoplankton To Assess Trophic Conditions: A Qpcr-Based, Multi-Year Study In Twelve Large Rivers Across The United States, Chiqian Zhang, Kyle D. Mcintosh, Nathan Sienkiewicz, Erin A. Stelzer, Jennifer L. Graham, Jingrang Lu Jan 2023

Graham, Jingrang Lu

Phytoplankton is the essential primary producer in fresh surface water ecosystems. However, excessive phytoplankton growth due to eutrophication significantly threatens ecologic, economic, and public health. Therefore, phytoplankton identification and quantification are essential to understanding the productivity and health of freshwater ecosystems, as well as the impacts of phytoplankton overgrowth (such as cyanobacterial blooms) on public health. Microscopy is the gold standard for phytoplankton assessment but is time-consuming, has low throughput, and requires rich experience in phytoplankton morphology. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is accurate and straightforward with high throughput. In addition, qPCR does not require expertise in phytoplankton morphology. Therefore, …

Effect Of Hot Water Extraction On Pyrolysis Of Tender Coconut Fruit Biomass: Kinetic And Thermodynamic Parameters, Tanya Gupta, Mohit Kuma, S.N. Upadhyay, P.K. Mishra, Amit K. Jaiswal

Articles

Effect of pre-treatment of tender coconut fruit bio-mass powder with hot water on physico-chemical properties and thermal degradation behavior were investigated. The physico-chemical parameters were evaluated using ASTM standard protocols. The thermal degradation behavior was studied at heating rates of 10, 15 and 20oC/min under inert (N2) atmospheric conditions using TG/DTG techniques. The activation energies at each heating rate were determined using Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Starink, and Tang models. The pre-treatment with hot water improved the proximate and ultimate analyses parameters and calorific value. The higher heating values (HHV) for untreated and treated tender coconut fruit biomass were 18.57 …

Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath Jan 2023

Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

I was always skeptical of The Warren Report as were countless other Americans over the decades.

I was reenergized to look more closely at November 22,1963, by a chance encounter with Brian heath, a JFK aficionado, who had made some startling discoveries about the assassination. He had studied meticulously the Nix film and concluded that the fatal shot came from within the presidential limousine from the driver, William Greer. Similarly, that many of JFK’s cabinet members consisted of former OSS spooks, who dominated the CIA, and were major spokesman for the national security state and America’s global dominance.

They saw …

Lps As A Virulence Factor Of Burkholderia Cepacia During Plant And Human Infection, Jack Klahr Jan 2023

Lps As A Virulence Factor Of Burkholderia Cepacia During Plant And Human Infection, Jack Klahr

Student Presentations

Burkholderia cepacia is a gram-negative bacterium that is the causative agent of sour skin rot in onion crops, and is an opportunistic pathogen in patients with cystic fibrosis. There are limited treatments available for this bacterium due to its innate resistance to antibiotics, and its virulence mechanisms are not well understood. This work aims to identify and describe virulence factors necessary for B. cepacia pathogenesis. Transposon mutagenesis in B. cepacia ATCC 25416, followed by a virulence screen in an onion infection model identified mutants that generated smaller wounds at 24 hours post-infection. We chose to follow up on mutant 169 …

Globally Scalable Approach To Estimate Net Ecosystem Exchange Based On Remote Sensing, Meteorological Data, And Direct Measurements Of Eddy Covariance Sites, Ruslan Zhuravlev, Andrey Dara, André Luís Diniz Dos Santos, Oleg Demidov, George Burba Jan 2023

Globally Scalable Approach To Estimate Net Ecosystem Exchange Based On Remote Sensing, Meteorological Data, And Direct Measurements Of Eddy Covariance Sites, Ruslan Zhuravlev, Andrey Dara, André Luís Diniz Dos Santos, Oleg Demidov, George Burba

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Despite a rapid development of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for carbon removal in recent years, the methods for evaluating NBS still have certain gaps. We propose an approach based on a combination of remote sensing data and meteorological variables to reconstruct the spatiotemporal variation of net ecosystem exchange from eddy-covariance stations. A Lagrangian particle dispersion model was used for upscaling satellite images and flux towers. We trained data-driven models based on kernel methods separately for each selected land-cover class. The results suggest that the proposed approach to quantifying carbon exchange on a medium-to-large scale by blending eddy covariance flux data with …

Sense-Able Hauntings: Ethics And Narratives In Ornithological Specimen Preservation At Yale's Peabody Museum, Elaina Foley

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

Until I was standing in between the rows of towering metal specimen cabinets, I didn’t understand how many birds the Yale Peabody Museum holds. Like most people, I had only experienced the display side of museums: its dioramas and glass cases. These displays, while made to embody a certain set of interests, priorities, and values, still serve an obscuring function—they vastly underrepresent the museum’s total collections. In their ornithology collection alone, the Peabody currently holds more than 152,000 bird skins, bones, eggs, nests, and other avian fragments. The Peabody staff members who maintain the ornithology specimen collections are distinct from …

Whole Genome Sequencing For Identification Of Putative Causative Alleles For Hemochromatosis In Horses, Anna M. Rauber-Ramos Jan 2023

Whole Genome Sequencing For Identification Of Putative Causative Alleles For Hemochromatosis In Horses, Anna M. Rauber-Ramos

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Hemochromatosis is liver disorder in which excess iron is stored in the liver, leading to iron overload and extensive liver damage that can prove fatal. Based on human precedence, a genetic cause for idiopathic hemochromatosis in horses is suspected. Two horses with hemochromatosis were whole genome sequenced, with variants in candidate genes prioritized in analyses of potential pathogenicity. No clear putative variants were found to be present in both horses, suggesting an etiology more complex than the initially suspected Mendelian inheritance. A heterozygous nonsense mutation in STEAP3 metalloreductase (STEAP3) was identified as a potential contributor to hemochromatosis in one of …

Pell-Lucas Collocation Method For Solving A Class Of Second Order Nonlinear Differential Equations With Variable Delays, Şuayi̇p Yüzbaşi, Gamze Yildirim Jan 2023

Pell-Lucas Collocation Method For Solving A Class Of Second Order Nonlinear Differential Equations With Variable Delays, Şuayi̇p Yüzbaşi, Gamze Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, the approximate solution of the nonlinear differential equation with variable delays is investigated by means of a collocation method based on the truncated Pell-Lucas series. In the first stage of the method, the assumed solution form (the truncated Pell-Lucas polynomial solution) is expressed in the matrix form of the standard bases. Next, the matrix forms of the necessary derivatives, the nonlinear terms, and the initial conditions are written. Then, with the help of the equally spaced collocation points and these matrix relations, the problem is reduced to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. Finally, the obtained system …

On The Distribution Of Adjacent Zeros Of Solutions To First-Order Neutral Differential Equations, Emad R. Attia, Ohoud N. Al-Masarer, Irena Jadlovska

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The purpose of this paper is to study the distribution of zeros of solutions to a first-order neutral differential equation of the form \begin{equation*} \left[x(t) + p(t) x(t-\tau)\right]' + q(t) x(t-\sigma) = 0, \quad t \geq t_0, \end{equation*} where $p\in C([t_0,\infty),[0,\infty))$, $q \in C([t_0,\infty),(0,\infty))$, $\tau,\sigma>0$, and $\sigma>\tau$. We obtain new upper bound estimates for the distance between consecutive zeros of solutions, which improve upon many of the previously known ones. The results are formulated so that they can be generalized without much effort to equations for which the distribution of zeros problem is related to the study of …

Approximation Results For The Moments Of Random Walk With Normally Distributed Interference Of Chance, Zülfi̇ye Hanali̇oğlu, Aynura Poladova, Tahi̇r Khani̇yev Jan 2023

Approximation Results For The Moments Of Random Walk With Normally Distributed Interference Of Chance, Zülfi̇ye Hanali̇oğlu, Aynura Poladova, Tahi̇r Khani̇yev

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, a random walk process $\left(X\left(t\right)\right)$ with normally distributed interference of chance is considered. In the literature, this process has been shown to be ergodic and the limit form of the ergodic distribution has been found. Here, unlike previous studies, the moments of the $X\left(t\right)$ process are investigated. Although studies investigating the moment problem for various stochastic processes (such as renewal-reward processes) exist in the literature, it has not been considered for random walk processes, as it requires the use of new mathematical tools. Therefore, in this study, firstly, the exact formulas for the first four moments of …

Inverse Nodal Problem For The Quadratic Pencil Of The Sturm$-$Liouville Equations With Parameter-Dependent Nonlocal Boundary Condition, Yaşar Çakmak, Baki̇ Keski̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we consider the inverse nodal problem for a quadratic pencil of the Sturm$-$Liouville equations with parameter-dependent Bitsadze$-$Samarskii type nonlocal boundary condition and we give an algorithm for the reconstruction of the potential functions by obtaining the asymptotics of the nodal points.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In order to study plant responses to drought stress, it is important to have markers for such responses. This issue has been a challenge for decades and numerous traits have been used for this purpose. In the current study, the influence of drought stress on proline biosynthesis, leaf water potential, and also gene expression levels of 10 genes probably involved in drought stress response regulation pathways were investigated. Also, all experiments were performed in both root and leaf tissues of studied rootstocks to investigate the response of plant tissues which is more suitable for the assessment of possible markers. As …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Plants can sometimes be under the influence of more than one stress factor. In this case, combined stress factors can cause different responses in plants. In this study, the phytohormonal activity and hormone gene expressions of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were investigated in different drought levels and soils with different levels of cadmium accumulation. Plants were grown at 4 different cadmium (Cd) levels (Cd: 0, Cd1: 100, Cd2: 150, and Cd3: 200 mg kg$^{-1}$) and 3 irrigation levels (D0: 100%, D1: 75%, and D2: 50% of field capacity). Abscisic acid (ABA), indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), salicylic acid …

Weed-Induced Crop Yield Loss: A New Paradigm And New Challenges, David Horvath, Sharon A. Clay, Clarence J. Swanton, James V. Anderson, Wun S. Chao Jan 2023

Weed-Induced Crop Yield Loss: A New Paradigm And New Challenges, David Horvath, Sharon A. Clay, Clarence J. Swanton, James V. Anderson, Wun S. Chao

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Direct competition for resources is generally considered the primary mechanism for weed-induced yield loss. A re-evaluation of physiological evidence suggests weeds initially impact crop growth and development through resource-independent interference. We suggest weed perception by crops induce a shift in crop development, before resources become limited, which ultimately reduce crop yield, even if weeds are subsequently removed. We present the mechanisms by which crops perceive and respond to weeds and discuss the technologies used to identify these mechanisms. These data lead to a fundamental paradigm shift in our understanding of how weeds reduce crop yield and suggest new research directions …

'I Just Want A Shirt That Will Fit Me!': An Inductive Approach To Understanding Transgender Consumers' Shopping Experiences, Domenique Jones, Jessica Strübel, Heejin Lim

Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications

Transgender consumers are often unable to express their identity or construct their appearance in the way they desire. Social realities inhibit realness, and it can be difficult or even impossible for them to externally realize their full identity (Gray 2009). The purpose of this research is to understand how transgender consumers’ gender identity influences their shopping experiences. Utilizing a lens of gender performativity theory, the research questions guiding the study include the following: (1) In what ways do transgender and gender non-conforming individuals experience the current retail apparel landscape? (2) How do transgender individuals navigate experience shopping for clothing and …
