Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers
Currently, variable-rate precision irrigation (VRI) scheduling methods require large amounts of data and processing time to accurately determine crop water demands and spatially process those demands into an irrigation prescription. Unfortunately, irrigated crops continue to develop additional water stress when the previously collected data is being processed. Machine learning is a helpful tool, but handling and transmitting large datasets can be problematic; more rural areas may not have access to necessary wireless data transmission infrastructure to support cloud interaction. The introduction of “edge-cloud” processing to agricultural applications has shown to be effective at increasing data processing speed and reducing the …

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
Nonsurgical management is almost always considered the first-line treatment for the vast majority of foot and ankle pathologies. Foot orthoses, shoe modifications, and therapeutic footwear are considered essential tools for successful conservative management of different foot and ankle disorders. Orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons should have a meticulous understanding of the lower extremity biomechanics as well as the pathoanatomy and the sequelae of diseases affecting the foot and/or ankle. This is essential to the understanding of the desired effects of the different inserts, orthotics, shoe modifications, or braces that may be prescribed for these conditions. In this article, we will …

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Neither the statute nor its implementing regulations explicitly define “sex” to include discrimination on the basis of menstruation or related conditions such as perimenopause and menopause. This textual absence has caused confusion over whether Title IX must be interpreted to protect students and other community members from all types of sex-based discrimination. It also calls into question the law’s ability to break down systemic sex-based barriers related to menstruation in educational spaces. Absent an interpretation that there …

Current methods of developing wearable electronics through reductive manufacturing pose a substantial ecological footprint. To address this issue, it is imperative to investigate alternative additive manufacturing techniques. Aerosol jet printing (AJP) is a promising approach that relies on the optimization of gas flow rates and ink rheology to produce high-resolution printed structures. Implementing a low-intensity layered delamination approach to synthesize titanium carbide MXene, and further produce MXene ink, reduces environmental impact while enhancing the device performance. MXene ink yields desirable rheology, including viscosity, surface tension, density, and contact angles compatible with AJP technique. In terms of cost, ecological effect, time, …

No Fire On The Mountain: Has Fire Suppression Caused Population Declines Of An Imperiled Ground Squirrel?, Alyssa Livingston, Courtney Conway, Eva Strand
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
The Northern Idaho Ground Squirrel (Urocitellus brunneus) is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. A prevailing hypothesis suggests that one reason for the species decline is encroachment of trees into its habitat due to fire suppression. However, this hypothesis has not been rigorously tested. Using geographic information systems and aerial imaging, I compared changes in abundance of the squirrels' populations to changes in forest canopy coverage over the past 40 years. These comparisons allowed me to test the prevailing hypothesis for the population declines of this rare species by testing the prediction that forest fire suppression …

Lipid Order In Red Blood Cell Membranes Exposed To Hypo-Osmotic Stress And Self-Inserting Pore-Forming Proteins, Aviana R. Smith, Rosey Whiting, Maryna Kucheriava, Jacob Kammer, Zhiyu Li, Daniel Fologea
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
The packing of lipids comprising a cell membrane, known as lipid order, has been under increasing scrutiny due to continuous findings of its biological significance. There is extensive literature detailing the changes in lipid order, and multiple temperature-induced phase transitions have been clarified. However, these experiments have not considered common external factors, such as hypo-osmotic stress and protein insertion. To fill these gaps in our knowledge, Red Blood Cell (RBC) membranes stained with membrane probes were investigated by general polarization (GP) and anisotropy (p). We evaluated RBC membranes under hypo-osmotic shock, and membranes with pore-forming toxins. Significant changes in lipid …

Solitary fibrous tumors are very rare in the pleura, and they are generally found incidentally. Even though they can potentially become malignant and metastasize, they have minimal clinical symptoms and can still be benign. Due to the low incidence of these tumors, there is no standard of therapy beyond surgical resection. We present an asymptomatic case of a large, rapidly expanding solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura in an elderly female.

CEELAB Research Data
Intertidal reefs of Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster) provide ecologically valuable habitat in estuaries along the Atlantic coast of North America. In Mosquito Lagoon, a shallow-water estuary on the east coast of central Florida, USA, historical aerial imagery was used to document a 24% decline in the live C. virginica reef area between 1943 and 2009. Using 2021 imagery, every living and dead reef in the same region was manually digitized to identify changes during the intervening 12 years. Positive impacts of C. virginica reef restoration that took place between 2007 and 2021 were also digitized to quantify long-term restoration impact. …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the clinic to improve patient care. While the successes illustrate the impact AI can have, few studies have led to improved clinical outcomes. A gap in translational studies, beginning at the basic science level, exists. In this review, we focus on how AI models implemented in non-orthopedic fields of corrosion science may apply to the study of orthopedic alloys. We first define and introduce fundamental AI concepts and models, as well as physiologically relevant corrosion damage modes. We then systematically review the corrosion/AI literature. Finally, we identify several AI models that may be Preprint …

Lipid ordering in cell membranes has been increasingly recognized as an important factor in establishing and regulating a large variety of biological functions. Multiple investigations into lipid organization focused on assessing ordering from temperature-induced phase transitions, which are often well outside the physiological range. However, particular stresses elicited by environmental factors, such as hypo-osmotic stress or protein insertion into membranes, with respect to changes in lipid status and ordering at constant temperature are insufficiently described. To fill these gaps in our knowledge, we exploited the well-established ability of environmentally sensitive membrane probes to detect intramembrane changes at the molecular level. …

Researchers have long puzzled over suicidal behavior. In this paper, we posit that when people are unable to attract mates given unfavorable sex ratios, suicide rates increase. Sex ratio, the proportion of males in a population, is linked to a variety of behaviors, including marriage stability, violence, depression, and infidelity. We test whether suicide rates are associated with county-level sex ratios utilizing data from 1999 to 2018, controlling for a variety of factors known to be associated with suicide risk. We find that sex ratio is associated with suicide rates, where a greater proportion of males in a county (age …

Herein, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies (SERS) were successfully employed to establish the chemical interactions of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, 10–15 nm) with human red blood cells (RBCs). The Raman/SERS spectra offered spectral evidence for the cellular uptake of AgNPs and the subsequent change in the conformation of the most abundant component, hemoglobin (Hb), from oxyhemoglobin to deoxyhemoglobin. The spectral characterization of AgNPs’ interactions with other RBC biomarkers (membrane proteins and lipids) was impeded by the dominant Hb bands, even for non-resonant Hb conditions. CytoViva hyperspectral imaging and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) served as complementary tools to effectively …

This study emerged in response to broader trends of increasing anxiety among schoolchildren and my own observations as a teacher. Suicide is now the second-leading cause of death for youth (Curtin et al., 2022), and anxiety is a known factor in most deaths by suicide (Nepon et al., 2010). Teachers are often the first point of contact for anxious students, but a shortage of counselors in U.S. schools and other systemic barriers prevent widespread access to counseling services (Cratty, 2019). Moreover, identity-based anxieties are often misattributed to aggression or attention-seeking, and punished in school settings, instead of recognized and supported …

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp., 2n = 2x = 22) is a protein-rich crop that complements staple cereals for humans and serves as fodder for livestock. It is widely grown in Africa and other developing countries as the primary source of protein in the diet; therefore, it is necessary to identify the protein-related loci to improve cowpea breeding. In the current study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 161 cowpea accessions (151 USDA germplasm plus 10 Arkansas breeding lines) with a wide range of seed protein contents (21.8~28.9%) with 110,155 high-quality whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify …

Effects Of Landslides On Terrestrial Carbon Stocks With A Coupled Geomorphic-Biologic Model: Southeast Alaska, United States, Adam M. Booth, Brian Buma, S. Nagorski

Landslides influence the global carbon (C) cycle by facilitating transfer of terrestrial C in biomass and soils to offshore depocenters and redistributing C within the landscape, affecting the terrestrial C reservoir itself. How landslides affect terrestrial C stocks is rarely quantified, so we derive a model that couples stochastic landslides with terrestrial C dynamics, calibrated to temperate rainforests in southeast Alaska, United States. Modeled landslides episodically transfer C from scars to deposits and destroy living biomass. After a landslide, total C stocks on the scar recover, while those on the deposit either increase (in the case of living biomass) or …

Pseudoallergy is a hypersensitivity condition not triggered by immunoglobulin E (IgE). These conditions can cause various health problems with symptoms identical to IgE-mediated allergic. The symptoms range from mild such as hives, to severe symptoms, such as anaphylactoid. Several drugs are known to activate mast cells directly through the mas-related G protein-coupled receptor X2 (MRGPRX2). MRGPRX2 is a receptor expressed on mast cells and responsible for their activation without being mediated by IgE. This review focuses on the types and methods of drugs that can induce pseudoallergy through MRGPRX2. The literature was collected with keywords in the form of “pseudo …
