Facial Expression Recognition Using Convolutional Neural Networks (Cnns) And Generative Adversarial Networks (Gans) For Data Augmentation And Image Generation, Shekhar Singh
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Facial expressions play a crucial role in human communication, serving as a powerful means to convey emotions. However, classifying facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) can be challenging, especially with small datasets and images. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is an active area of research, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) being widely employed for classification. In this research, we propose a CNN-based approach for FER that utilizes both original and augmented datasets to enhance classification accuracy. Experimental results on the FER2013 dataset show test accuracies of 63.39% and 64.59% for the original and augmented datasets, respectively, in a seven-class classification task. …
Emergence, Evolution, And Outcomes Of Community-Based Conservation Behaviors In Coastal Systems, Matthew C. Clark
Emergence, Evolution, And Outcomes Of Community-Based Conservation Behaviors In Coastal Systems, Matthew C. Clark
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This body of work leverages a variety of quantitative and theoretical approaches to advance our understanding of why individuals adopt community-based conservation behaviors, the impacts those decisions have on natural resources and human wellbeing, and how these insights can be used for practical conservation planning. The first chapter makes a theoretical contribution by fitting data produced from a stylized, agent-based simulation of conservation adoption over time with a set of probabilistic differential equations derived from the theory of diffusion of innovations and cultural evolutionary theory broadly. We use these methods to demonstrate that such a statistical approach can provide accurate …
Genomic Underpinning Of Drought-Associated Phenotypes In A Keystone Shrub Species Of Western North America, Carlos Dave Contreras Dumaguit
Genomic Underpinning Of Drought-Associated Phenotypes In A Keystone Shrub Species Of Western North America, Carlos Dave Contreras Dumaguit
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic climate warming and habitat loss threaten species and ecosystem sustainability. Given this, it is urgent to determine whether populations can adapt at a rate sufficient to combat climate change or if human intervention is needed to preserve community ecosystem health. Assessing whether populations could adapt includes inferring whether key phenotypic traits associated to abiotic tolerance are under genetic control and therefore heritable. This thesis focused on the imperiled western North American sagebrush steppe and its widespread eponymous keystone species Artemisia tridentata, (common name, big sagebrush). To determine the adaptive capacity of any population, standing variation for phenotypic traits across …
Seed Predation By Harvester Ants On Native Grasses And Forbs: Implications For Management In A Changing Landscape, Michaela Grossklaus
Seed Predation By Harvester Ants On Native Grasses And Forbs: Implications For Management In A Changing Landscape, Michaela Grossklaus
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Vegetation restoration efforts in the sagebrush steppe to date have yielded mixed results. Although many factors contribute to variation in restoration outcomes, seed predation by harvester ants may be an important yet overlooked source of seed loss. Using a selection of grass and forb seeds commonly seeded in local restoration projects, we conducted a field experiment to evaluate whether seed species and spatial arrangement (i.e., distance of seed patches from ant colonies and from each other) affected patterns of seed consumption by Owyhee harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex salinus. To further examine the ecological factors that may affect foraging by harvester …
Multiphysics Numerical Modeling For Pfas Transport Within Vadose And Saturated Zones, Pierrette Iradukunda
Multiphysics Numerical Modeling For Pfas Transport Within Vadose And Saturated Zones, Pierrette Iradukunda
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The extent and severity of wildfires have increased around the world, necessitating a greater understanding of the consequences of wildfire and post-fire impacts on soil and groundwater. Wildfire suppression techniques like aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) can also contaminate the soil with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which can contribute to human and environmental health concerns. PFAS are dangerous man-made chemical compounds that are persistent, mobile, poisonous, and a major cause of soil and groundwater contamination. In addition to contamination by aqueous film-forming foams, PFAS has accumulated in the environment as a result of being utilized in numerous other goods over …

A Dna Aptamer Transducer Designed Toward Rapid Biosensor Development: A Novel Approach To Modular Biosensing Platforms, Timothy Z. Hachigian
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Aptamer-based biosensors have garnered significant interest due to their versatility in detecting a wide range of analytes across various applications. In this work, a customizable Aptamer Transducer (AT) was introduced as a non-enzymatic and modular duplexed aptamer biosensing platform. The design modularity was accomplished by separating the aptamer input domain from the output domain. The AT was demonstrated to be capable of fully transducing an adenosine signal into arbitrary DNA outputs using a structure-switching aptamer design. The AT design utilized strand displacement reactions via toehold mediated strand displacement with fluorescence based reporting for signal detection. Furthermore, the AT was incorporated …

Impacts Of Habitat Type On Individual Prairie Falcon (Falco Mexicanus) Movement And Foraging Behavior During The Breeding Season, Eden Sunshine Ravecca
Impacts Of Habitat Type On Individual Prairie Falcon (Falco Mexicanus) Movement And Foraging Behavior During The Breeding Season, Eden Sunshine Ravecca
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Animal movement is a fundamental characteristic of the ecology, fitness, and evolution of species. Movement behavior can differ significantly among individuals within a population and is driven by a multitude of factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic. How and why animals differ in the way they use habitat is central to species conservation, but relying solely on population-level estimates obscures individual variation and can result in ineffective management strategies. Understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of movement and individual variation among wide-ranging aerial predators is particularly challenging, but remains imperative for conservation, given the critical role of higher trophic levels in ecosystem functioning. …
Men Of The Forgotten War: The Korean War And American Masculinity, Elliott D. Sauerwald
Men Of The Forgotten War: The Korean War And American Masculinity, Elliott D. Sauerwald
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
While the Korean War is considered America’s “Forgotten War,” the conflict offers rich insight into an unexplored facet of 1950s masculine gender constructs. This thesis examines how Korean War servicemen deviated from hegemonic masculinity by failing to live up to civilian society’s gender standards, and by unwittingly developing alternative masculinities rooted in their shared wartime experiences. Military masculinity declined after World War II in favor of masculinity centered on nuclear companionate fatherhood. The troops who fought in Korea embodied obsolete masculinity and their service garnered less prestige and public admiration compared to that of their World War II counterparts. Nevertheless, …
Development Of Predictive Rockfall Runout Maps Based On Calibrated Rockfall Models, Olivia Tabor
Development Of Predictive Rockfall Runout Maps Based On Calibrated Rockfall Models, Olivia Tabor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Cliffs formed in columnar jointed basalt have the proper geometry and discontinuities to initiate rockfall events. There are a number of locations in Boise, Idaho that may experience rockfall events from columnar jointed basalt cliffs. Publicly available LiDAR data coupled with site reconnaissance activities were used to develop calibrated two-dimensional rockfall models at a study site in southeast Boise. Photogrammetry was used to determine the volume of seven calibration boulders. The study site, located on Whitney Terrace, consists of a columnar jointed basalt cliff followed by a slope with a subdivision at the toe of the slope.
The two common …
Resolving Taxonomic Uncertainty And Clarifying Species Boundaries In The Cymopterus Terebinthinus (Apiaceae) Species Complex, Annie Taylor
Resolving Taxonomic Uncertainty And Clarifying Species Boundaries In The Cymopterus Terebinthinus (Apiaceae) Species Complex, Annie Taylor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Speciation processes are not well resolved or agreed upon. They are however essential to our general understanding of the evolutionary processes that lead to diversification. Determining the juncture at which a genetically and/or morphologically divergent population becomes a unique species can be challenging, especially with respect to recent divergences and closely related taxa where issues such as incomplete lineage sorting may bring about confounding results. To complicate our theoretical disagreements on species definitions, different models inferring species boundaries may accordingly lump or split species. Using multiple lines of evidence to define species boundaries can greatly improve species inference and preclude …
From Flames To Forage: How Wildfire Affects Elk Behavior And Abundance, Megan M. Whetzel
From Flames To Forage: How Wildfire Affects Elk Behavior And Abundance, Megan M. Whetzel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) is an ecologically and culturally important wildlife species in the Intermountain West, but it is facing habitat changes caused by increasing fire activity. Wildfire frequency is projected to continue to change into the future, yet increases in annual area burned and increases in area burned at high severity may actually represent opportunities for some species. Large herbivores like elk may benefit from increased access to regenerating areas where forage abundance and quality are often elevated. Therefore, effective management of wildlife populations may depend on quantifying how large ungulates, like elk, alter …
Understanding Gendered Risks For Severe Covid-19 Through Surveying The Gender Diverse Community, Arden Tyree
Understanding Gendered Risks For Severe Covid-19 Through Surveying The Gender Diverse Community, Arden Tyree
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Early on in the pandemic, the medical community began noticing that men were more likely to be hospitalized, require admission to the ICU, and die of COVID-19 than women but few studies of COVID-19 make mention of gender diverse people, an often-overlooked population who may have vastly different experiences than non-gender diverse men or women. Their variations in gender and sex characteristics may also help provide further insight into which traits are protective or risk factors for this disease. This project used Poisson regression in order to analyze self-reported survey data. The major associations of interest will be between disease …

Impacts Of A Duf2207 Family Protein On Streptococcus Mutans Stress Tolerance Responses And Biofilm Formation, Xiaochang Huang, Camile G. Laird, Paul P. Riley, Zezhang Tom Wen
School of Dentistry Faculty Publications
Locus SMU.243 in Streptococcus mutans was annotated as a member of the DUF2207 family proteins highly conserved in all bacteria but with unknown function. To investigate its role in S. mutans physiology, a SMU.243-deficient mutant was constructed using allelic exchange mutagenesis, and the impacts of SMU.243 deletion on bacterial growth, stress tolerance response, and biofilm formation were analyzed. Compared to the wild-type UA159, S. mutans lacking SMU.243 displayed a reduced growth rate and a reduced overnight culture density (p < 0.01) when grown at low pH and in the presence of methyl viologen. Relative to the parent strain, the deficient mutant also had a reduced survival rate following incubation in a buffer of pH 2.8 (p < 0.01) and in a buffer containing hydrogen peroxide at 58 mM after 60 min (p < 0.001) and had a reduced capacity in biofilm formation especially in the presence of sucrose (p < 0.01). To study any ensuing functional/phenotypical links between SMU.243 and uppP, which is located immediately downstream of SMU.243 and encodes an undecaprenyl pyrophosphate phosphatase involved in recycling of carrier lipid undecaprenyl phosphate, a uppP deficient mutant was generated using allelic exchange mutagenesis. Unlike the SMU.243 mutant, deletion of uppP affected cell envelope biogenesis and caused major increases in susceptibility to bacitracin. In addition, two variant morphological mutants, one forming rough colonies and the other forming mucoid, smooth colonies, also emerged following the deletion of uppP. The results suggest that the SMU.243-encoded protein of the DUF2207 family in S. mutans plays an important role in stress tolerance response and biofilm formation, but unlike the downstream uppP, does not seem to be involved in cell envelope biogenesis, although the exact roles in S. mutans’ physiology awaits further investigation.

Leading In Forced Change: Superintendent Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Theodore W. Love
Leading In Forced Change: Superintendent Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Theodore W. Love
Education Doctoral
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted P-12 public schools in the United States. School district superintendents were forced immediately into managing a crisis and leading organizational adaptation. This doctoral research study examined the lived experience of 15 New York State P-12 public school superintendents. This constructivist grounded theory study found that adaptation is a forced change. The environment forced schools to change, but that force did not change superintendent leadership. It did, however, change the role of the superintendents as they responded to the three major conditions that emerged across the data: (a) the shutdown of schools in March 2020, (b) uncertain …

Investigation Into The Utility Of The Submaxillary Gland Androgen-Regulated Protein 3b (Smr3b) As A Normalizing Factor In Oral Fluid, Alejandro Ocampo
Student Theses
Oral fluid is a biological sample of increasing interest in clinical and forensic toxicology. This matrix is easy to obtain, it shows a low biohazard risk, and it reflects recent drug exposure. However, the interpretation of its quantitative values is limited, due to the high inter- and intraindividual variability. The investigation of normalization factors in this biological matrix may improve the interpretation value of oral fluid. This study investigated the potential of two signature peptides from the submaxillary gland androgen-regulated protein 3B (SMR3B) as normalization factors in oral fluid. SMR3B was digested in trypsin and the signature peptides SMR3B-1 and …

Emotion Recogniton In Students With Social Anxiety: Loving-Kindness As An Intervention, Audrey Darnbush
Emotion Recogniton In Students With Social Anxiety: Loving-Kindness As An Intervention, Audrey Darnbush
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Deficits in emotion recognition can often be found in individuals who have elevated social anxiety—decreasing positive social interaction and increasing social avoidance. Some possible causes for these deficits include: (1) negative interpretation biases for ambiguous social stimuli and (2) negatively biased self-focused and others-focused attention in social situations— which can impede an accurate appraisal of how one is being evaluated. Mindfulness-based interventions target attentional awareness, and some have empirical support for treating anxiety-related issues. However, little research has been conducted to determine the possible therapeutic effects of loving-kindness meditation for social anxiety disorder. Loving-kindness meditation (LKM) is a specific subtype …

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Aptamers are short polynucleotide chains that can bind with very high affinities to a broad range of chemical and biomolecular targets, including proteins, cells, viruses, microorganisms, toxins, and chemical compounds. They are analogous to antibodies with applications in therapeutic delivery, biosensors, and diagnostics, but possess the advantages of easy production and lower immunogenicity than antibodies. They are produced by the experimental method known as the systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX). SELEX is a powerful experimental method for selecting oligonucleotide aptamers for chemical or biomolecular targets of interest. The SELEX protocol has seen several modifications since its development …

Integrating Human Psychology Into Car-Following Models For Accurate Response Prediction: A Realistic Approach, Faiza Khan
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Car-following models traditionally focus on vehicle kinematics or dynamics parameters without considering human psychology. However, recent research has attempted to incorporate psychology into car-following models. Despite these efforts, there are limitations in understanding the psychological triggers that influence individual drivers' responses. To address this gap, we propose a new car-following model based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which incorporates a human element by utilizing concepts of psychology. To gather the data pertaining to human input a questionnaire was carefully developed utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior. Data collection and analysis were done through a survey using google forms. …
