Comparison Of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Based Cerebral Autoregulatory Indices In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Howard Chao, Sebastian Acosta, Craig Rusin, Christopher Rhee
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BACKGROUND: Premature infants are born with immature cerebral autoregulation function and are vulnerable to pressure passive cerebral circulation and subsequent brain injury. Measurements derived from near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) have enabled continuous assessment of cerebral vasoreactivity. Although NIRS has enabled a growing field of research, the lack of clear standardization in the field remains problematic. A major limitation of current literature is the absence of a comparative analysis of the different methodologies.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between NIRS-derived continuous indices of cerebral autoregulation in a cohort of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants.
METHODS: Premature infants of birth weight 401-1000 …

Bile acids serve a vital function in lipid digestion and absorption; however, their accumulation can precipitate liver damage. In our study, we probed the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on bile acid synthesis and the ensuing liver damage in mice induced by bile acids. Our findings indicate that DMSO efficaciously curbs bile acid synthesis by inhibiting key enzymes involved in the biosynthetic pathway, both in cultured primary hepatocytes and in vivo. Contrarily, we observed that DMSO treatment did not confer protection against bile-acid-induced liver damage in two distinct mouse models: one induced by a 0.1% DDC diet, leading to bile …

Small Satellite Conference
The implementation of Imaging spectrometers with state-of-the-art performance on small satellites is challenging due to the size, weight, and power (SWaP) limitations. We have recently developed a compact form, the Chrisp Compact VNIR/SWIR Imaging Spectrometer (CCVIS), that facilitates their usage without sacrificing performance. The CCVIS enables a modular implementation that, combined with a freeform telescope, produces a wide field of view with high signal to noise ratio (SNR) performance. The targeted scientific application is the study of aquatic ecosystems. The imaging spectrometer is designed to address carbon sequestration in coastal margins and wetlands, kelp and seagrass studies, coral reefs, harmful …

The effect of bad air quality on human health is a well-known risk. Annual health costs have significantly been increased in many countries due to adverse air quality. Therefore, forecasting air quality-measuring parameters in highly impacted areas is essential to enhance the quality of life. Though this forecasting is usual in many countries, Sri Lanka is far behind the state-of-the-art. The country has increasingly reported adverse air quality levels with ongoing industrialization in urban areas. Therefore, this research study, for the first time, mainly focuses on forecasting the PM10 values of the air quality for the two urbanized areas …

Using T He Carbon Atom Method T O Determine Mean Oxidation Number O F Organic Carbons, Pong Kau Yuen, Cheng Man Diana Lau
Faculty Publications
The notion of oxidation number acting as an electron-counting concept is crucial for balancing redox reactions, and for understanding organic and biological redox conversions. Chemical formula methods are widely used for counting oxidation numbers. There are three types of chemical formula methods. They are molecular formula method, structural formula method, and Lewis formula method. Each type has its own rules and procedures, and they are difficult for students to fully understand and remember. In addition, the capability of the molecular formula method to assign mean oxidation number of organic carbons for organic molecules or molecular ions is limited. To overcome …

Awareness, Acceptance, And Equanimity: Relationships Between Trait Mindfulness, Stress, And Blood Pressure, Gabrielle Renee Chin
Theses and Dissertations
Hypertension (HTN) is associated with stress and unhealthy emotion regulation. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are said to help address stress-related diseases like cardiovascular disease by impacting stress and emotion regulation, yet studies of MBIs on cardiovascular health show inconsistent findings. Limited research has examined the basic links between trait mindfulness and cardiovascular health, leaving the active components of MBIs in this context unclear. Therefore, the current study examined the relationship between trait mindfulness and blood pressure (BP) in individuals with pre-hypertension (pre-HTN). Latent variables representing two conceptualizations of trait mindfulness -Monitor and Accept Theory (MAT) and Equanimity- were calculated using facets …

Introduction: Seagrass meadows serve as an integral component of coastal ecosystems but are declining rapidly due to numerous anthropogenic stressors including climate change. Eelgrass wasting disease, caused by opportunistic Labyrinthula spp., is an increasing concern with rising seawater temperature. To better understand the host-pathogen interaction, we paired whole organism physiological assays with dual transcriptomic analysis of the infected host and parasite.
Methods:: Eelgrass (Zostera marina) shoots were placed in one of two temperature treatments, 11° C or 18° C, acclimated for 10 days, and exposed to a waterborne inoculation containing infectious Labyrinthula zosterae (Lz) or sterile seawater. At two- and …

Optimization Of Light Spectrum During Coral Grow-Out, Daisy N. Ponce
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Direct and indirect anthropogenic stressors have led to a global decline of coral populations. Coral restoration aims to mitigate this loss and facilitate reef recovery. In particular, the sexual propagation of corals ex situ allows for the production and outplant of genetically diverse coral recruits on the reef. However, optimization at ex situ coral nurseries is required to scale-up production. This project aims to investigate and develop methods that reduce the duration of grow-out ex situ by determining the optimal light spectrum under which to rear for sexual recruits of the tropical scleractinian coral species Pseudodiploria strigosa and P. …

Regulation Of Stress Responses And Membrane Morphology By Dspa In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Rebekah Kathryn White
Theses and Dissertations
In the world of microorganisms, cyanobacteria are a uniquely skilled powerhouse. They participate in global nutrient and carbon cycling. They have the ability to photosynthesize, which allows them to use sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce cellular energy. However, photosynthesis has a lot of points were environmental stresses can interfere, increasing the chances of oxidative stress and nutrient imbalances that can amplify deleterious effects. One regulator in particular will be the target of this study. DspA, also known as Hik33, is a histidine kinase that perceives and regulates multiple overlapping stress responses. In this project, abiotic stress effects will be …

The Role Of Phenylacetic Acid (Paa) Catabolism In Acinetobacter Physiology, Anna Josephine Hooppaw
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Microorganisms are constantly challenged by stressful environments and have evolved mechanisms to adapt to or counteract these threats. The Gram-negative pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is thought to rely on a “persist and resist” strategy that facilitates its remarkable ability to survive in a variety of harsh conditions, giving it the capacity to cause life-threatening infections. Currently, over 60% of the global A. baumannii clinical isolates are multidrug resistant (MDR), leading the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to categorize this pathogen as a top priority for the research and development of new antimicrobial therapies. Understanding the …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
In the past decade, the term ‘global aging’ has gained much attention among researchers, policymakers, civil societies, and governments worldwide. The continuous decline in fertility rates and increased life expectancy have resulted in an ongoing demographic transition where the share of adults aged 65 or older is increasing and outnumbering children younger than five years. In the United States and other developed countries, this rapid demographic transition is expected to continue to strain the existing health infrastructure as it becomes increasingly challenging to ensure healthy living environments for older adults. The ten questions and answers in this paper have been …

Real-world evidence regarding the value of integrating genomic profiling (GP) in managing cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is limited. We assessed this clinical utility using a prospective trial of 158 patients with CUP (October 2016-September 2019) who underwent GP using next-generation sequencing designed to identify genomic alterations (GAs). Only 61 (38.6%) patients had sufficient tissue for successful profiling. GAs were seen in 55 (90.2%) patients of which GAs with US Food and Drug Administration-approved genomically matched therapy were seen in 25 (40.9%) patients. A change in therapy was recommended and implemented (primary endpoint of the study) in 16 (10.1%) and …

Maximum Size-Density Relationships In Mixed-Species And Monospecific Stands Of The Southeastern United States, Maxwell Robert Schrimpf
Theses and Dissertations
Maximum size-density relationships (MSDR) are used to quantify differences across sites in the number of trees of a given size and species that can be supported per hectare. These relationships are important to managers who are trying to maximize basal area and wood volume. In my study, I examined MSDR across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi using US Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data. I determined the impact of species-specific, specific gravity, functional traits, and environmental factors on MSDR using a quantile regression approach. Overall, I found that climatic factors had the greatest influence on MSDR, and that …

Tumors are comprised of subpopulations of cancer cells that harbor distinct genetic profiles and phenotypes that evolve over time and during treatment. By reconstructing the course of cancer evolution, we can understand the acquisition of the malignant properties that drive tumor progression. Unfortunately, recovering the evolutionary relationships of individual cancer cells linked to their phenotypes remains a difficult challenge. To address this need, we have developed PhylinSic, a method that reconstructs the phylogenetic relationships among cells linked to their gene expression profiles from single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-Seq) data. This method calls nucleotide bases using a probabilistic smoothing approach and then …
