A Helping Hand Out Of The River: Refugee Perspectives For Provider Engagement, Brian L. Isakson, Elizabeth R. Stein, Alexandra Olson, Destiny Waggoner, Jill Holtz, Sara Ali, Suha Amer, Martin Ndayisenga
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: A growing number of refugee groups are seeking care within the U.S. health care system for medical, psychological, and social needs. Research is limited in understanding refugee-specific conceptualizations of helping relationships and provider characteristics that improve interactions in health systems. This study aimed to identify provider characteristics that facilitate engagement and helpfulness in a refugee-specific population from refugee participant voices to inform future practices of health care clinics.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews with refugee participants were conducted to assess 1) experiences moving on from difficult experiences, 2) engagement with the health system, and 3) provider characteristics that facilitated engagement and …
Development, Validation, And Item Bias Assessment Of The 4-Item Self Care Inventory Among Racially And Income Diverse Adolescents Living With Type 1 Diabetes And Their Caregivers, Vinkrya Ellison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Objective: For youth with Type 1 Diabetes and their families, engaging in multiple complex health behaviors may delay and/or reduce serious complications by attempting to keep blood glucose levels within a specific range for as long as possible. As such, quick and rapid assessment of diabetes self-care behaviors is important, yet few brief (e.g., 2-5 items) established measures exist; and even fewer have been evaluated for bias across socio-medical-demographic proxies for privilege/oppression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the Self-Care Inventory (SCI-R) and to evaluate validity, reliability, and measurement bias across socio-demographics. Methods: …

School-based law enforcement (SBLE) have become increasingly common in U.S. schools over recent decades despite the controversy surrounding their presence and lack of consensus around their associated benefits and harms. Drawing on the history and evidence base regarding SBLE, we advocate for an end to SBLE programs. Grounding our argument in principles of Community Psychology and positive youth development, we outline how the presence and actions of SBLE negatively affect individual students as well as school systems, with particularly harmful outcomes for students with minoritized and marginalized identities. Research on SBLE and school crime does not provide consistent evidence of …

Youth living in poverty are more likely to experience cumulative stressors including multiple adverse childhood events. Further, the Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionality affected Hispanic youth and communities, leading to unprecedented levels of trauma. This research responded to a need for a youth resiliency-building program in an urban and impoverished area with a majority Hispanic population. We conducted a formative evaluation of a youth intervention entitled Mind Mat- ters: Overcoming Adversity and Building Resilience, which aims to help youth overcome adversity and to build resilience via psychoeducation and skill development. Just prior to the pandemic in the United States (August-December, …

Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19 (Pasc) In Pediatrics: Factors That Impact Symptom Severity And Referral To Treatment., Catherine Soprano, Ryan Ngo, Casey A Konys, Ashley Bazier, Katherine Salamon
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
The post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is a complex condition. While there are emerging studies on its effects in adults, there is scarce research regarding the long-term effects of COVID-19 infection among youth. Several researchers have likened long-haul COVID-19 to chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In adults, the prognosis for these diagnoses is less promising than that in youth; however, there is currently very little information available on the presentation of youth with PASC. A better understanding of the specific symptom presentation for youth diagnosed with PASC is necessary. Retrospective chart reviews were conducted …

Risk And Protective Factors To Well-Being In Foster Care Youth Prescribed Psychotropic Medication In A Wraparound Program Of Care, Ann Reali Stratton
Dissertations
Background: Youth in foster care are prescribed psychotropic medications at higher rates and are more likely to experience disruptions to their medical care. Wraparound models of care have been shown to improve outcomes for youths on psychotropic medications, however, these methods have proved difficult to replicate in the foster care population. Government policies have called for better oversight in the foster care population and in response programs have been implemented, however, there remains little research for these programs. Objective: This research will evaluate the characteristics of foster care youth as they enter a Wraparound model of care and the predictive …

American Indian (AI) adolescents who practice healthy behaviors of sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and limited screen time can lower their lifetime risk of diet-sensitive disease. Little is known about how AI parenting practices influence the health behaviors of youth. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore how a group of AI parents of youths at risk of disease influenced their youth’s health behaviors after a family intervention. A secondary objective was to understand the role of AI parents in supporting and sustaining health behavior change in their youths following the intervention. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with AI …

To assess the public health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, investigators from the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) research program developed the Pandemic-Related Traumatic Stress Scale (PTSS). Based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) acute stress disorder symptom criteria, the PTSS is designed for adolescent (13–21 years) and adult self-report and caregiver-report on 3–12-year-olds. To evaluate psychometric properties, we used PTSS data collected between April 2020 and August 2021 from non-pregnant adult caregivers (n = 11,483), pregnant/postpartum individuals (n = 1,656), …

Development Of Optimal Cut Scores For Within-Normal-Limits Mmpi-2-Rf Profiles Of Sex Offenders, Ilona Iikhtman
Theses and Dissertations
Alleged and convicted sex offenders are generally required to undergo forensic evaluations that frequently include a psychological assessment to answer a wide range of psycho-legal questions. A critical component of the psychological assessment of sex offenders is the evaluation of personality and psychopathology. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and its subsequent editions have been the most widely used personality assessment measures in forensic evaluations, including sex offender evaluations, and in research conducted with sex offenders. The previous literature demonstrates that a subgroup of sex offenders often produce test scores reflective of the general population, which is referred to as …

A Descriptive Study Of Louisiana 4-H 8th Through 12th Graders' Perceptions Of Career And College Readiness, Carrie M. Lane
LSU Master's Theses
As youth leave primary education and enter college or a career path, preparing those youth to ensure success has fallen, in large part, upon formal and non-formal youth educators. Encouraging students to apply and complete college has been a focus of education professionals for many years. Historically, gauging college and career readiness (CCR), academic institutions have relied on academic performance in areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics (Mattern, et. al, 2014). The use of academic focused measures instead of student-based evaluation had its drawbacks. While core education is important, measuring soft skills needed for the workforce and college environment …

Clinically Indicated Genomic Sequencing Of Children In Foster Care: Legal And Ethical Issues, Hadley Stevens Smith, Emily S Bonkowski, Madison R Hickingbotham, Stacey Pereira, Thomas May, Christi J Guerrini
Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications
There are approximately 400 000 children in foster care in the US, approximately one-half of whom have chronic health problems and approximately 10% of whom have complex healthcare needs. Given the increasing relevance of genomic sequencing to guide clinical care for children with rare, chronic, and undiagnosed conditions, it may be an important component of diagnostic evaluation for children in foster care. Clinically indicated genomic sequencing may provide information that has health implications for children in foster care, as well as for their biological parents and other relatives. Whether and how genomic sequencing results impact legal decision making and family …

Counseling Practicum Students’ Experiences Working With Children With Learning Exceptionalities, Kathryn Babb, Viki Kelchner, Laurie O. Campbell
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
School-based practicums provide opportunities for counselors-in-training to provide supervised counseling services to youth while providing authentic, immersive counseling experiences for the counselor. Children counseled may identify with or without exceptionalities. The researchers sought to understand the experiences of five counselors-in-training who counseled children with exceptionalities during a semester-long school-based practicum. In this phenomenological study, researchers thematically coded transcripts from a focus group about counseling children with exceptionalities. Three themes were identified: (a) counselors-in-training identity inclusive of anticipated counselor identity versus their practical identity, (b) acceptance inclusive of acceptance of self and acceptance of clients, and (c) worldview inclusive of culture …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Youth integrated behavioral healthcare (IBH) is a preferred method of service delivery, and school system expertise on these teams is imperative. In this descriptive phenomenological study, we sought to understand the experiences of five school counseling practicum students (SCITs) engaged in IBH in an urban children's hospital. Phenomenological analysis resulted in five themes: (a) contributing school system knowledge, (b) expansion of professional identity through practical application, (c) collaborative interventions and techniques, (d) interprofessional supervision, and (e) program and setting challenges. Implications for counselor education and supervision, including IBH-specific training for SCITs, conclude.

Submission To Justice Canada On The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers
Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents
Justice Canada has been holding an engagement process on the issue of whether an offence of coercive control should be added to the Criminal Code. This offence has been proposed in a series of private members bills, most recently, Bill C-332. This submission argues that it is imperative that actors in all legal domains acquire a nuanced and contextual understanding of coercive control derived from an intersectional analysis that attends to how multiple systems of oppression interact to shape the tactics of coercion and control. However, we do not support the criminalization of coercive control, either as a standalone offence …

Peace And Good Order: The Case For Indigenous Justice In Canada By Harold R. Johnson, Scott Franks
Peace And Good Order: The Case For Indigenous Justice In Canada By Harold R. Johnson, Scott Franks
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Harold Johnson was a Cree lawyer, trapper, author, and storyteller from the Montreal Lake Cree Nation. He practiced as a criminal defence lawyer and then as a Crown prosecutor in my hometown of La Ronge, Saskatchewan. Peace and Good Order: The Case for Indigenous Justice in Canada (“Peace and Good Order”) is Harold’s resignation letter to the legal profession, apology for his participation in Canada’s criminal law system, and argument for Indigenous jurisdiction. It is, in part, an autobiographical account of his relationship to Canadian law as a Nehiyaw man. And it comes at a time when more and more …

Understanding Attitudes Towards Change, Organizational Diversity & Inclusion Strategies And Anti-Racist, Multicultural Engagement, Lynda D. Gonzales
College of Business Theses and Dissertations
Building on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study focuses on employees from YMCAs across the United States and explores the relationships between individual resistance to change (RTC), attitudes towards organizational diversity & inclusion strategies (AODI) and engagement in anti-racist, multicultural (AMO) efforts. Utilizing the Resistance to Change Scale, the study argues that higher RTC results in lower engagement in AMO activities. Additionally, the study explores AODI predicting more positive attitudes result in greater AMO engagement and that AODI will moderate the relationship between RTC and AMO. A demographically representative total of 141 YMCA employees participated from across the …

The Way To Well-Being Through Safety, Trust And Freedom: A Youth-Driven Framework For Older Youth In Child Welfare, Bridget Marie Colacchio
Dissertations
The current study looks at the experience of well-being among young people who experienced foster care in the United States. The objective of the project was to seek a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of well-being from the perspective of those with most direct knowledge of it: youth in care themselves. Chapter 1 includes an overview of the social, historical, policy, and clinical landscape underpinning the study, starting with a summary of the current state of the child welfare system in the United States. This includes a look at two key contextual factors – structural racism and neoliberalism – that …
Northeast Tennessee Educators’ Perceptions Of Academic Outcomes Of High School Students Who Completed A Community-Based, Resilience-Informed Course Presented At School, Carla Whiles
Ed.D. Dissertations
Adverse childhood experiences negatively affected the mental and physical health of adults and children and were linked to cognitive difficulties and decreased academic outcomes at all levels of education. Resilience, the ability for one to bounce back from adversity, was widely accepted to mitigate the negative effects of adversities and resilience intervention programs were becoming more common in schools. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to examine northeast Tennessee educators’ perceptions of the academic outcomes of high school students who completed a community-based, resilience-informed course presented at school. After conducting semi-structured interviews with 11 participants, I discovered the …
