A Contemplative Look At Social Change: Awareness And Community As Foundations For Leading, Lisa Napora
A Contemplative Look At Social Change: Awareness And Community As Foundations For Leading, Lisa Napora
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
We are part of an awareness-based movement that seeks to re-envision higher education for a more just, compassionate, inclusive society. Movements by their very nature are the result of community building efforts. However, the significance of this work is often unrecognized and devalued in our individualistic culture. This article argues that the power of awareness and the power of community are essential ingredients in the recipe for change. The paper explores how contemplative practices were utilized to build and sustain a contemplative community in Western New York that has grown from one university setting, to an inter-institutional collaborative, to a …

The Mindful Campus: Organizational Structure And Culture, Linda Coutant, Karen Caldwell
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
This case study of a campus known to incorporate contemplative practices in the curriculum and co-curriculum explored how a mindful campus is operated as well as what organizational structures and cultures are in place to support the use of contemplative practices. Supportive structures include physical structures (i.e., a labyrinth and meditation room), non-physical structures (i.e., a faculty learning community and student meditation club), and financial structures (i.e., a special professorate and internal grants). Cultural themes that emerged from participants’ description of the campus culture focused on embodiment of the liberal arts philosophy, community, and connection. All of Tierney’s (2008) aspects …

Missing Goals Yet Tangible Indicators Within Sustainability Assessment Literature: The Need To Align Planning And Monitoring In Urban Sustainability, Matthew Cohen, Amelia Miles, John E. Quinn
Missing Goals Yet Tangible Indicators Within Sustainability Assessment Literature: The Need To Align Planning And Monitoring In Urban Sustainability, Matthew Cohen, Amelia Miles, John E. Quinn
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Sustainability assessment literature is often based on large indicator sets, frequently lacking organizational framing. Previous research calls for stronger theoretical groundings and for urban sustainability assessments specifically to be goal-oriented, meaning that assessments should articulate goals for sustainable cities and select the indicators most appropriate for tracking progress. Here we analyzed the content of 69 papers from sustainability assessment literature. We asked: What common sustainability goals guide indicator selection? What is the distribution of natural, proxy, and constructed indicators across the literature? And what is the distribution of indicators within and across capital types? We found that less than half …
Emerging Trends And Challenges Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of The United Arab Emirates, Noura Eisa Al Harasi
Emerging Trends And Challenges Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of The United Arab Emirates, Noura Eisa Al Harasi
Theses
This research shed light on the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by examining the trends, benefits, and challenges of CSR in the UAE. The research contributed to the literature in the field of CSR by providing a comprehensive understanding of the concept in a non-Western context that can represent a generalizable model, not only for the UAE, but also for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries that share similar corporate culture with the UAE. In this regard, the research serves as a reference work into CSR beyond the UAE as it answered the following …

Achieving Sustainability In Community Health Initiatives: Follow The Money, Jo Z. Carcedo, Jessica Pugil, Shao-Chee Sim, Bret Sinclair
The Foundation Review
The U.S. health system’s “sick care” model — as designed — currently spends $4.3 trillion annually to treat its people once they become ill, yet it has done little to meaningfully advance their health and well-being. In fact, research consistently demonstrates that socio-environmental factors and individual behaviors — the social determinants of health — have a far greater impact on health outcomes. Responding to this research, in 2017 the Episcopal Health Foundation launched the Texas Community-Centered Health Home Initiative. The $10 million, multiyear investment was a proactive, developmental effort to build the capacity of community-based clinics to go beyond clinical …

Application Of The Rural Web Framework Within The Context Of Sustainable Development: A Systematic Literature Review, Godfred Addai, Matthew Abunyewah, Michael Odei Erdiaw-Kwasie, Seth Asare Okyere, Michael Asiedu Gyensare, Lawrence Guodaar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In recent years, sustainability concerns have gained increasing attention among countries and stakeholders worldwide. Towards the transition to sustainable rural development, the rural web framework (RWF) has become a consistent tool. Indicators from the RWF have been used to explore sustainable rural development for decision-making tasks, which improves the social, economic, and environmental performance of rural regions. However, the application of the RWF in studies is on the decline. Furthermore, there is a lack of literature reviews on the importance of the RWF and its relationship with different facets of sustainable development. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) (a) …

Evaluating Automated Truck Platoon (Atp) Deployment For The Los Angeles–Inland Empire Trade Corridor Enhancement, Shailesh Chandra, Aastha Chaudhary, Prakhar Srivastava, Jose Torres-Aguilera
Mineta Transportation Institute
The California Freight Mobility Plan 2020 lists the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor region as a prominent industrial hub experiencing an increase in freight flows. The California Freight Mobility Plan also regards automated truck platoon (ATP) as an emerging opportunity to minimize congestion on the trade corridor routes. Percentage change in accessibility from 2022 (“without” ATP) to 2040 (“with” ATP) is calculated for the eighteen industry sectors of the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor. The application of the accessibility formulation was carried out with data on travel time from I-710 and I-10 within Los Angeles County. The findings suggest that …

External Affairs And Trusted Family Businesses: A Research Agenda, Jennifer Griffin, Yoo Na Youm
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In the past two decades, the Journal of Public Affairs has solidified corporate public affairs as a legitimate leadership skillset vital to driving future business growth. Yet, more work at a persistently overlooked gap in the Journal, the intersection of public affairs and family businesses, might shed new light on thriving, trusted, and sustainable business practices. This paper examines the unique contributions of family businesses as trusted influencers. As one of the most prominent forms of business, worldwide, family businesses persistently enjoy unusually high levels of public trust while collectively employing millions of wage earners yet their contributions to corporate …

Resisting Burnout: Bell Hooks’ Pedagogy Of Hope And Teaching Antiracist Feminism Online At The University Of Wyoming During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha L. Vandermeade
Feminist Pedagogy
After earning a PhD in Women’s Studies from an urban, multicultural, R1 university in 2020, I accepted a teaching position at the University of Wyoming, where I was hired primarily to teach feminist and critical race-focused courses. When an in-person position suddenly moved entirely online, I found myself facing not only the culture shock of teaching at a rural, primarily White institution whose state legislature and general populace are largely hostile to antiracist feminism, but also the myriad daily challenges of teaching online during a global pandemic. I had felt personally prepared--as a White lesbian raised in a rural environment, …

The enormity and perniciousness of economic, social, and environmental sustainability challenges are evident through several avenues. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is issuing increasingly dire warnings for the future of life on Earth. Threats to social cohesion, evidenced particularly in the institutionalization of injustices and the current fragility of democracy in the United States, highlight the need for increased social cohesion. Furthermore, rising economic inequality, inequities based on gender and race, and the increasing cost of damages caused by climate events highlight economic challenges. In 2015, the United Nations put forth an agenda to address economic, social, and environmental …

Defining Dementia-Friendly Communities From The Perspective Of Those Affected, Iris Alexandra Wernher
Defining Dementia-Friendly Communities From The Perspective Of Those Affected, Iris Alexandra Wernher
Dissertations and Theses
More and more communities across the globe are pledging to become more "dementia friendly," yet many initiatives lack direction as to what this pledge might entail. The intent of this qualitative study, conducted in the metropolitan area of Portland and several other cities in Oregon, was to better understand how communities can increase their dementia friendliness – from the perspective of people living with dementia and their care partners. The study further aimed to clarify if and how age- and dementia-friendly efforts can be integrated.
Twenty-five community-dwelling individuals living with dementia and their 25 informal carers participated separately in semi-structured …

This study sheds light on the significance and role of threshold spaces as means of accomplishing sociocultural needs, restoration and wellbeing in the residential environment. Understanding the function and uses of these spaces allows us to appreciate their benefits that are often neglected. The research particularly focuses on the social dimension of one fundamental threshold space; the Cairene balcony. It is an integral space that provides a valuable connection to the outside, and its importance in the development of urban living is widely recognized. If carefully designed to meet the residents’ needs and demands, they can promote a better quality …
With Liberty And Reinsurance For All: The Deep Case For A Government Backstop In Health Care, Christina S. Ho
With Liberty And Reinsurance For All: The Deep Case For A Government Backstop In Health Care, Christina S. Ho
Denver Law Review
One long-overlooked government function is the provision of reinsurance to insurers and other private entities to help absorb catastrophic costs when losses exceed what those institutions could be expected to bear. Yet the U.S. government fails to reinsure the health plans of ordinary Americans, a step that would shield them from outlier health events. Consider, by contrast, the longstanding federal guarantee to banks and depositors against unusual liquidity risk. The lack of an explicit state-sponsored backstop for health risk is often taken to reflect a national aversion to entitlements. This Article challenges that premise by calling attention to the many …

Plastic is a ubiquitous material that has become an essential part of our lives. More than one hundred million tons of plastic has accumulated in the world’s oceans as a result of poor waste management. This plastic waste gradually fragments into smaller pieces known as microplastics and nanoplastics. These small plastic particles can cause significant damage to marine ecosystems, and negatively impact human health. According to a recent review of international patents, the majority of ocean-cleaning inventions are limited to microplastics larger than 20 μm. Furthermore, such technologies are ineffective for nanoplastics, which measure less than 1000 nm, or even …
