The Impact Of Postresettlement Stressors And Access To Health Care On Health Outcomes In Recently Resettled Refugees In The United States, David T. Lardier, Julia Hess, Lucas Winter, Jessica R. Goodkind
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
This mixed-methods study examines mechanisms connecting the deployment of economic, social, and health care resources to emotional distress and physical health outcomes. Examining such mechanisms is critical for informing strategies, policies, and other interventions for reducing health disparities and improving refugee health in the United States and other resettlement contexts. Data for this study were collected as part of a randomized control trial in a mid-sized city in the Southwestern United States. Two-hundred ninety recently resettled (< 3 years) refugee adults from 143 households were enrolled in the study (36.2% Afghan, 32.8% Iraqi/Syrian, and 31.0% Great Lakes African; 52% women). Qualitative interview data were collected via semistructured interviews. A longitudinal structural equation path model of quantitative data from three time points over 12 months tested hypotheses that emerged from qualitative findings. In semistructured interviews, refugees in the United States (a) attributed the development of worse or new physical health problems to postresettlement stressors related to financial instability and limited social support that contributed to their emotional distress and (b) reported several barriers to accessing health care in the United States, including insufficient knowledge of health care resources, inadequate patient-provider communication, and navigating complex American health insurance systems, all of which exacerbated their physical health problems. Guided by these qualitative findings, longitudinal quantitative data revealed that: (a) postmigration stressors were associated with emotional distress and poor self-reported physical health, (b) emotional distress mediated the association between postmigration stressors and global health satisfaction, and (c) emotional distress was negatively associated with global health satisfaction. Findings document stressors refugees experience in the context of the unique environment created by the American health care system and how these stressors contribute to poor physical health through increased emotional distress. (2011) Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: The Effects, Counseling Challenges, And Strategies, Harriet A. Bachner
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
For more than 20 years the number of grandparents who have taken over the role of the primary custodial caregiver of their grandchildren has steadily increased. There has been burgeoning investigation and interest into this phenomenon that affects the largest segment of the U.S. population, the baby boom generation, as well as older adults. This report provides an overview of the most critical issues that have been covered in the literature and identifies some of the challenges for counselors who work with both the grandparents and the children. Some counseling strategies that have been shown to be promising in dealing …

Self-Reconstruction : Between Identity And Interpersonal Relationships, Abdelfettah Nacer Idrissi
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
We live and go through situations and circumstances that hurt us or bring us joy and happiness. However, moments of crisis seem to be the most important moments in our lives when we question ourselves. We question our personality, our identity, our relationships with ourselves or with others. We carry, as Jacques Salomé said so well, “the scars of our wounds. It is up to us to honor them, because they also say that we have survived and that they have made us stronger and more lucid.
We will rely on this quote to elaborate our problematic on the self-reconstruction …

The Affective Discourses Of Eviction: Right To Counsel In New York City, Hadley Savana Bates
Dissertations and Theses
This study explores the interrelationships of urban policy, affect, and power through a critical discourse analysis of New York City's "Universal Access to Legal Services" / "Right to Counsel" ordinance, a 2017 initiative that has persisted amidst the evolving landscape of eviction diversion following the outbreak of Covid-19. By examining archival documents regarding the groundbreaking policy, this research reveals how affective discourses regarding vulnerability, stress, and solidarity situate political actors in relation to urban policy, political movement, and the material conditions of survival. Drawing upon critical policy studies and affect theory, this study underscores the affective dimensions of policy mobility …

My Brother’S Keeper: Two Black Men Navigating The Tenure-Track Experience, Danny E. Malone Jr., Jesse R. Ford
Sociology
This study explores the tenure-track experiences of two junior faculty Black men in higher education, while growing still remains vastly unexplored in higher education. Using an autoethnography approach with a critical race theory lens, the authors explore how race and institutional expectations shape their experiences along the primary components of the tenure process: research, teaching and service. While one author is beginning their tenure journey while the other is ending, findings highlight commonalities along teaching and service experiences are being mediated by their identities as Black men. Their research experiences are distinct from one another given the different research expectations …

Valuing Social Data, Amanda Parsons, Salomé Viljoen
Valuing Social Data, Amanda Parsons, Salomé Viljoen
Law & Economics Working Papers
Social data production is a unique form of value creation that characterizes informational capitalism. Social data production also presents critical challenges for the various legal regimes that are encountering it. This Article provides legal scholars and policymakers with the tools to comprehend this new form of value creation through two descriptive contributions. First, it presents a theoretical account of social data, a mode of production which is cultivated and exploited for two distinct (albeit related) forms of value: prediction value and exchange value. Second, it creates and defends a taxonomy of three “scripts” that companies follow to build up and …
Modular Bankruptcy: Toward A Consumer Scheme Of Arrangement, John A. E. Pottow
Modular Bankruptcy: Toward A Consumer Scheme Of Arrangement, John A. E. Pottow
Law & Economics Working Papers
The world of international bankruptcy has seen increasing use of the versatile scheme of arrangement, a form of corporate reorganization available under English law. A key feature of the scheme is its modularity, whereby a debtor can restructure only a single class of debt, such as bond indentures, without affecting other debt, such as trade. This is the opposite of chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code’s comprehensive reckoning of all financial stakeholders. This article considers a novel idea: could the scheme be transplanted into the consumer realm? It argues that it could and should. Substantial benefits of more individually …

Interests And Decent Work’S Account Of Well-Being And Job Performance In A Lower Social Class Sample, Benjamin J. Wright
Dissertations
There is a need for more accurate information regarding the work-related experiences of individuals from lower social class backgrounds. The present study seeks to evaluate the degree to which important career-related variables (e.g., interest congruence, decent work) account for differences in subjective well-being (SWB) and job performance (e.g., occupational citizenship behavior [OCB], task performance) for a sample of adults from lower social class backgrounds. A novel approach to evaluating the objective indicators of social class for individual study participants was implemented to collect a sample of 365 participants, 105 of which were included in analysis. A path analysis was conducted …

Harnessing Large Language Models To Simulate Realistic Human Responses To Social Engineering Attacks: A Case Study, Mohammad Asfour, Juan Carlos Murillo
Harnessing Large Language Models To Simulate Realistic Human Responses To Social Engineering Attacks: A Case Study, Mohammad Asfour, Juan Carlos Murillo
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
The research publication, “Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior,” by Stanford and Google in 2023 established that large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 can generate interactive agents with credible and emergent human-like behaviors. However, their application in simulating human responses in cybersecurity scenarios, particularly in social engineering attacks, remains unexplored. In addressing that gap, this study explores the potential of LLMs, specifically the Open AI GPT-4 model, to simulate a broad spectrum of human responses to social engineering attacks that exploit human social behaviors, framing our primary research question: How does the simulated behavior of human targets, based …

The case being studied was Kampung Laut community in Cilacap, Indonesia. Quantitative data on social networks before the pandemic served as the basis for ethnographic explanations on the …
‘The Food Of The Home’ An Exploration Of Place And Practice Of Ordinary Women In Dublin City 1950-2000 On Irish Cuisine, Roann Byrne
Dissertations
Before the rise of restaurants and the accessibility of dining out, the home was where food engagement took place. In the recent surge of Irish Michelin restaurants, and our growing reputation for food culture, one element has been overlooked. Long before the great chefs and level of fine dining we have now – the heart of Irish food culture lay in the home. In the ongoing debate of what Irish cuisine is, we haven’t thought to look inwards, to the routes of our food engagement. This thesis seeks to understand the places, practices and engagement of ordinary women and food …

Louisiana Journal of Counseling
This research study explored the personal experiences of ten African American pastors, located in a south central state, through the use of basic interpretive, qualitative research and a phenomenological design for data analysis. A face-to-face, semi-structured interview methodology was used to examine how African American pastors referred their church members to mental health professionals. Concerns about referrals included not knowing any local therapists, potential cultural barriers such as financial costs and transportation needs, and wanting Christian counselors to work with their church members. This study found that these pastors would refer their church members to mental health professionals if they …

Student Theses and Dissertations
Nianyefan (the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve) is an essential part of the celebration of Chinese New Year. This study focuses on the transformation of nianyefan in the middle and south of Shandong during the past four decades with the purpose of discovering and interpreting the interactions with the changing social, political, and economic dynamics since the 1980s. The study found that the reforms since the 1980s have diluted the authentic feel of nianyefan in the middle and south of Shandong, while the culture of nianyefan is not simply passive but actively responds to them. Events, Christian Faith Communities, And The Public Square, Ruth Dowson (Rev.), Daniel H. Olsen
Events, Christian Faith Communities, And The Public Square, Ruth Dowson (Rev.), Daniel H. Olsen
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Living as members of a faith community can be problematic in world regions where secularism controls the public sphere. The secularisation of European society, for example, has made it more difficult for religious groups to have a voice in public affairs. However, in many instances, religion has seen a revitalised role in the public square. Even in places where religion is believed to be best served as a muted witness in the private realm, Jews, Christians, and Muslims share a long tradition and heritage of political dissent, such as gathering on street corners to express their faith and their views. …
Representation Of Pre-Christian Baltic Religion In The Balts’ Road Tourism Route In Lithuania And Latvia, Michael Strmiska
Representation Of Pre-Christian Baltic Religion In The Balts’ Road Tourism Route In Lithuania And Latvia, Michael Strmiska
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The Balts’ Road tourism route in Latvia and Lithuania is an interesting example of how religious tourism may be packaged within a framework of cultural heritage tourism. The Balts’ Road offers travellers insight into the medieval Baltic world before the coming of Christianity. In this context, pre-Christian religious beliefs and practices constitute but one dimension of the historical tableau that the tourism route is intended to conjure. This article examines the manner in which the pre-Christian Baltic religion is represented on the Balts’ Road, displaying a certain ambivalence that seems related to the past religious history and current religious power …

Finding Data Pathways Through The ‘Pandemic Pilgrimage Boom’: Embedded-Like Research, Covid-19, And The British Pilgrimage Trust, Eleanor O’Keeffe
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This article reviews claims that the United Kingdom experienced a ‘pandemic pilgrimage boom’. It contributes findings from an ‘embedded-like’ research project, which drew on data created by the British Pilgrimage Trust (BPT) – a heritage and wellbeing charity that hosts a website hub to support pilgrimage action in the UK – to debate about the impact of COVID-19 on pilgrimage practice. These findings show how a set of uses and meanings about pilgrimage, particularly its affordances for mental health and emotional wellbeing, have resonated during the pandemic, especially at moments of heightened social stress. This has generated greater social traction …
