Public Pedagogy, Autotheory, And Egyptian Female Podcasters, Yasmeen Ebada, Kim Fox
Public Pedagogy, Autotheory, And Egyptian Female Podcasters, Yasmeen Ebada, Kim Fox
Faculty Journal Articles
This research examines six Egyptian female podcasters whose work sits at the theoretical intersection of public pedagogy and autotheory, loosely defined as a first-person narrative form of feminist expression used to challenge hegemonic discourses as a means of activism. The two theories supplement each other, especially since feminism aims to abolish sexism, and public pedagogy is a means to obtain that result. The researchers adopted American-Canadian cultural critic Henry Giroux’s (2004) theory of public pedagogy because it allows for critical dialogue to address discrimination and push for egalitarian transfiguration. Autotheory was chosen for its relation to the podcasters' life experiences …

Exploring The Impact Of Parental Education And Employment On The Prevalence Of Aces: A Nation Wide Investigation, Eihi Yoshinaga, Naima Shifa
Annual Student Research Poster Session
Our project seeks to examine the association between caregivers' educational attainment and employment status and the prevalence and types of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in their children. ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occurs between the ages of 0 to 17, and it is well-established that ACE exposure is correlated to negative repercussions on mental and physical well-being in adulthood. Our study aims to identify specific caregiver conditions that elevate the likelihood of ACE exposure. Such efforts would allow the facilitation of targeted allocation of ACE-related funding for early prevention and mitigation among high-risk families. We opted to utilize the …

Many countries in the modern era strive to keep up with the world's rapid development in many economic, environmental, and social aspects, particularly on the urban scale and city planning, as well as competition for access to the highest levels of luxury in terms of buildings, designs, and iconic buildings that distinguish each country in the media from its counterparts from neighboring countries. In the region, and possibly internationally. Some countries were forced to relocate a number of their cities and capitals, as well as develop new alternatives for them in new places. In the context of implementing these strategies, …

No. 13: Supermarkets In Mexico And The Mexico City Metropolitan Area: Logics Of Territorial Insertion And Socio-Spatial Inequalities, GuéNola Capron, SalomóN GonzáLez Arellano, Linda Moreno
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The paper analyzes the logics of expansion and spatial distribution of supermarkets at three scales: global, national (Mexico), and especially metropolitan (Mexico City), from rich to poor spaces and social categories. It seeks to understand how supermarkets, in a country like Mexico where they initially target mainly the middle class, reproduce or mitigate socio-spatial disparities. We conclude that they are a factor both of mitigation (due to a relatively good distribution in the metropolitan space) and of reproduction of inequalities (due to the segmentation of the offer). In the case of Mexico City, the situation of oligopoly by the company …

Firearms Law And Scholarship Beyond Bullets And Bodies, Joseph Blocher, Jacob D. Charles, Darrell A.H. Miller
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Academic work is increasingly important to court rulings on the Second Amendment and firearms law more generally. This article highlights two recent trends in social science research that supplement the traditional focus on guns and physical harm. The first strand of research focuses on the changing ways that gun owners connect with firearms, with personal security, status, identity, and cultural markers being key reasons people offer for possessing firearms. The second strand focuses on broadening our understanding of the impact of guns on the public sphere beyond just physical safety. This research surfaces the ways that guns can create fear, …

This pilot study aims to explore how participatory digital storytelling can be used as an intervention to address race-based stress stemming from White supremacy and monoracism and describe the potential experiential effects on racial identity among Asian–White multiracial American college students. Specifically, we employed testimonio, or a liberation psychology-informed approach in a sample of 10 Asian–White multiracial American college students. The intervention consisted of four group sessions: (a) orienting (overview of liberation psychology and storytelling), (b) creating (self-reflection on personal stories and group discussion), (c) narrating (story sharing and filming), and (d) reflecting (watching and reacting to digital stories). Using …

How Can Transformational Leadership Be Unbound From The Gender Binary Paradigm?, Jody Condit Fagan, Michelle Hamilton-Page
How Can Transformational Leadership Be Unbound From The Gender Binary Paradigm?, Jody Condit Fagan, Michelle Hamilton-Page
Libraries
Disrupting binary conceptions of gender could be one of the most needed paradigmatic shifts in leadership studies. Nonbinary leadership paradigms can liberate people of all genders from a framework that forces them to describe their leader behaviors as aligned with or transgressive of a binary gender. Academic leadership studies has generally focused on differences between men and women and discrimination against women, with trans and nonbinary gender identities notably absent. Traditional models of leadership need to be interrogated to see if they hold up under a nonbinary lens. In this presentation, we will examine two dimensions of the iconic model …

Caught Between Epistemology And Field-Conditions: Travails Of Young Qualitative Policy Researchers In India, Sameer Pendharker, Sneha Swami, Himali Mhatre, Subodh Wagle
The Qualitative Report
The qualitative approach is immensely helpful in policy research as it provides a comprehensive, contextually grounded, and nuanced understanding of policy processes and issues. It is characterized by certain epistemological imperatives that demand the collection of rich, diverse data and a thick description of the context. However, conducting fieldwork to collect data required to fulfill these imperatives poses diverse and stiff challenges, especially for young policy researchers in the Indian context. In this background, this paper argues that, while epistemological principles require qualitative researchers to collect rich and diverse data, the researcher’s social identity and the socio-political ground reality in …

Gamification And Player Profiles Among Faculty In Mexico, Álvaro Antón-Sancho, Diego Vergara, Lorena Rodríguez-Calzada
Higher Learning Research Communications
Objectives: Analysis of the player profiles of professors is a fruitful line of research because player profiles may influence the design of gamified situations. We studied a sample of 243 university professors in Mexico to analyze the player profiles with which they identify and those they consider most effective didactically in gamified situations.
Method: Descriptive quantitative research was used to analyze the distributions of the responses to a questionnaire given to a group of 243 professors from different Mexican universities. These responses have been statistically analyzed by computing the proportions of player profile choices and applying Pearson’s chi-square test of …

“A Word For Nature”: A Reflection On A Contemplative Teacher-Training Course In The Desert, Netta Baryosef-Paz, Nirit Assaf
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This paper reflects on an interdisciplinary, environmental, and contemplative course the authors taught at Kibbutzim College of Education in Tel Aviv. Entitled “I am in Nature,” the course was co-taught by an ecologist and a literary scholar. It included a two-day base camping and hiking experience in the Negev Desert and three on-campus meetings. The students read Nature Writing and Ecopoetry, practiced guided mindfulness meditations in the field, and kept contemplative-writing journals. In this community voices piece, we offer an innovative pedagogy for higher education that centers on the integration of the learner’s mind, body, and heart through interdisciplinary, contemplative, …

Types Of Bullying And Its Causes For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Full-Inclusion Programs: Teachers ‘And Parents’ Opinion, Abdullah Alatawi
Information Sciences Letters
Students with developmental disabilities are exposed to high rates of bullying compared to typical people and individuals with autism are exposed to even higher rates [7]. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to investigate the types and causes of bullying experienced by students with autism in full-inclusive programs in three cities in Saudi Arabia (Tabuk, Aljof, and Arar). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 parents and educators who met the inclusion criteria. The interviews were analyzed using the Dedoose" program, leading to the identification of seven themes. The participants reported instances of verbal bullying, including offensive language and threats. Physical bullying, …

Avoiding The Summer Slide: Tier One And Two Supports Targeting Early Readers, Sarah Harry
Avoiding The Summer Slide: Tier One And Two Supports Targeting Early Readers, Sarah Harry
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
For more than 100 years, the “summer slide,” or the learning losses by students following a long summer break have been well documented. On average, a typical student loses a little more than one month’s worth of skill across each academic area (e.g., language arts and mathematics) throughout the summer months. Research has also demonstrated that the “summer slide” has a particularly harmful impact on reading achievement of students from low-socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a tiered system of support for oral reading fluency in early elementary school aged …
