Σπλαγχνιζομαι And The Characterization Of The Markan Jesus, Jonathan W. Bryant
Σπλαγχνιζομαι And The Characterization Of The Markan Jesus, Jonathan W. Bryant
Dissertations
Amid scholarly studies both of the miracle stories of the Markan Jesus and of the characterization of the Markan Jesus, little attention has been given to the role of Jesus’s emotions as portrayed in those accounts—though references to Jesus’ emotions appear quite frequently in the Gospel of Mark. This dissertation seeks to fill this lacuna through a detailed analysis of the portrayal of Jesus’s compassion (σπλαγχνίζομαι) in the Markan miracle stories. I first examine the accounts of other miracle workers from ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish literature to discover how emotions feature in the depictions of miracle workers likely known in …

Evocative And Provocative Image-Making In The Age Of Generative Ai, Julian Kilker
Evocative And Provocative Image-Making In The Age Of Generative Ai, Julian Kilker
Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education
Editorial for inaugural AI-focused special issue of Tradition-Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education, published under the auspices of the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru). Discusses three articles by five authors in this issue: (1) Choreographing Shadows: Interdisciplinary collaboration to orchestrate ethical image-making by Mark Burchick and Diana Pasulka; (2) Giving Up Control: Hybrid AI-augmented workflows for image-making by Joshua Vermillion; and (3) Hands are Hard: Unlearning how we talk about machine learning in the arts by Adam Hyland and Oscar Keyes.
Editing this special issue explored several key questions: What does “innovation” mean when …
"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
Dissertations
At the center of First Peter’s rhetoric stands an exhortation to “follow” in Christ’s footsteps (2:21). Several scholars have suggested (sometimes off-handedly or in a singular footnote) that this specific exhortation utilizes the technical language of “discipleship,” but only to support a particular piece of the letter’s paraenesis (2:18–25). I contend that such a suggestion, while a helpful place to start, does not go far enough. With this study, I propose that we may read First Peter comprehensively as a summons to discipleship in accord with ancient understandings of education, exemplified in the multifaceted system of Hellenistic paideia. I argue …

Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education
Although popular media attention has suggested that recent advancements in AI image-making tools have threatened creative labor, this nascent medium is capable of research opportunities involving diverse academic fields which may not be readily apparent. Using a collaboration between an artist and scholar of religious studies as a case study, the ongoing “Noo Icons” media arts project, comprising images, video, animation, and installation, explores how AI image-making tools are well suited to reframe the visual history of the religious transcendent. Building on the scholarship of Hito Steyerl and Eryk Salvaggio, AI art’s usage as a diagnostic tool for deciphering internet …
Bruised By Their Transgressions: A Phenomenological Study Of Healing From Traumatic Religious Experiences, Sharron Y. Riley-Seymour
Bruised By Their Transgressions: A Phenomenological Study Of Healing From Traumatic Religious Experiences, Sharron Y. Riley-Seymour
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study explored the impacts of religious/spiritual abuse (RSA) on women abused by Christian religious leaders in their adulthood, describing their treatment experiences and identifying effective elements of their healing processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 women who had experienced RSA in adulthood. Four central research questions guided the interview protocol: 1) How do participants describe what led them to seek therapy? 2) How do participants describe their therapeutic/healing processes? 3) How do participants describe what they found helpful/not helpful or effective/ineffective in their treatment/healing processes? 4) How do participants describe factors influencing their treatment/healing processes? The interviews …
Subverting Campbell’S Materialist Conclusion, Noah Gordon
Subverting Campbell’S Materialist Conclusion, Noah Gordon
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Keith Campbell and Jonathan Schaffer propose an ontology in which entities consist in collocated collections of tropes, and tropes are individuated by location. This would imply that immaterial entities are not possible. In this paper, I attempt to subvert this materialist conclusion by giving two arguments against the key individuation principle it requires. I show that the locational individuation principle can be formulated so as to survive the first, but not the second argument.
Divine Hiddenness And Affective Forecasting, Miles Andrews
Divine Hiddenness And Affective Forecasting, Miles Andrews
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
In this paper I argue that J. L. Schellenberg’s Divine Hiddenness Argument is committed to a problematic implication that is weakened by research in cognitive psychology on affective forecasting. Schellenberg’s notion of a nonresistant nonbeliever logically implies that for any such person, it is true that she would form the proper belief in God if provided with what he calls “probabilifying” evidence for God’s existence. In light of Schellenberg’s commitment to the importance of both affective and propositional belief components for entering into the proper relationship with God, this implication of his argument becomes an affective prediction or forecast. However, …

S5, God And Numbers, Chad A. Mcintosh
S5, God And Numbers, Chad A. Mcintosh
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
It has become somewhat ontologically fashionable for theists to embrace anti-realist views of abstract objects.1 On pain of consistency, however, I will argue that any theist who accepts the S5 ontological argument for the existence of God should also accept a parallel S5 ontological argument for the existence of abstract objects. This is because the same ontological and modal inferences thought to demonstrate the existence of God can also be used to demonstrate the existence of numbers. I further argue that being ontologically consistent here might come at the price of being theologically unacceptable, as the argument for numbers would …

The Discrimination Of Hair-Based Drug Testing, Phillip S. Downes
The Discrimination Of Hair-Based Drug Testing, Phillip S. Downes
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Business ethicists usually debate workplace drug testing by appealing to safety (consequences of drug use for the public) and employees' contracts with the company. However, the means of catching these unsafe workers are rarely analyzed. I discuss the means of hair-based drug testing through the lens of discrimination. Drawing on Richard Lippke’s criticism of drug testing, my paper demonstrates that there is an unequal hindrance of autonomy of long-haired women, the unsheltered homeless, and darker haired individuals over others and, as a result, that hair-based drug testing is morally wrong.

Viewing Terrence Malick’S A Hidden Life As Political Theology: Toward Theocinematics, Joel Mayward
Viewing Terrence Malick’S A Hidden Life As Political Theology: Toward Theocinematics, Joel Mayward
Journal of Religion & Film
In this article, I bring Terrence Malick’s 2019 film, A Hidden Life, into conversation with two of philosopher Paul Ricoeur’s concepts: (1) the “social imaginary” as the interplay of ideals, images, ideologies and utopias, and (2) Ricoeur’s description of the genre of “parable” as a narrative-metaphor which provokes a “re-orientation by disorientation” within an audience’s imagination. Drawing from Ricoeur’s thought, I apply a theological film criticism I call “theocinematics” to A Hidden Life in order to call attention to the ways in which the cinematic form itself engenders sociopolitical and theological thought. Through emphasizing film aesthetics in my analysis, …
