De Médée À La Sorcière : Reconstruction D’Un Mythe Par Michelet, Caroline Strobbe Jan 2023

De Médée À La Sorcière : Reconstruction D’Un Mythe Par Michelet, Caroline Strobbe

The Coastal Review

In La Sorcière, Jules Michelet uses the strength and the myth of the Medea character, which had already fascinated Corneille. In the second part of his work, Michelet creates nominative witches after authentic texts. In the first part, he creates an allegoric witch on the Medea model: the Woman, a victim of arbitrariness, injustice and repression, rises up against her oppressors, figuring the march of Humanity towards Enlightenment and Liberty. The analogies between the Witch and Medea are therefore numerous and necessary, since they help to render the defense of the oppressed against the oppressor. Would the somber Medea, …

Communicating With The Past Via Javier Cercas’ Las Leyes De La Frontera, Bobby D. Nixon Jan 2023

Communicating With The Past Via Javier Cercas’ Las Leyes De La Frontera, Bobby D. Nixon

The Coastal Review

Cercas’ protagonist, Gafitas, narrates his memories of being a member of "el Zarco's" youth gang in the barrio chino of Girona during the summer of 1978, from the vantage point of the early 2000s. The novel is simultaneously viewed through the intertextual lens of José Antonio de la Loma’s cycle of quinqui films based on the life of the famous Catalan delinquent, El Vaquilla, Juan José Moreno Cuenca. There is renewed interest in these films from the Transition period of the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the success of this novel and director Daniel Monzón's film based on Cercas’ …

Native Versus Non-Native Speaker Teachers’ Perceptions About English Varieties In Designing/Developing Efl Curriculum Development, Mohamed A. Mekheimer Jan 2023

Native Versus Non-Native Speaker Teachers’ Perceptions About English Varieties In Designing/Developing Efl Curriculum Development, Mohamed A. Mekheimer

The Coastal Review

This study seeks to identify the perceptions of teachers, native speakers, and non-native speakers in terms of the influence of teaching varieties of English on EFL curriculum development and teaching designs and which of these factors could predict how the English curriculum should be developed for a particular variety and culture. Using the Teaching Varieties Influence Survey (TVIS), this study introspected 126 respondents of native-speaker teachers (NESTs) and non-native-speaker teachers (non-NESTs) to reflect their views using t-tests, correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. General findings from this study revealed no statistically significant differences in the two samples’ …

Characterization Of Dissipative Regions Of A N-Doped Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavity, Eric M. Lechner, Basu Dev Oli, Junki Makita, Gianluigi Ciovati, Alex Gurevich, Maria Lavarone Jan 2023

Characterization Of Dissipative Regions Of A N-Doped Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavity, Eric M. Lechner, Basu Dev Oli, Junki Makita, Gianluigi Ciovati, Alex Gurevich, Maria Lavarone

Physics Faculty Publications

We report radio-frequency measurements of quality factors and temperature mapping of a nitrogen doped Nb superconducting RF cavity. Cavity cutouts of hot and cold spots were studied with low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary electron microscopy. Temperature mapping revealed a substantial reduction of the residual resistance upon cooling the cavity with a greater temperature gradient and hysteretic losses at the quench location, pointing to trapped vortices as the dominant source of residual surface resistance.Analysis of the tunneling spectra in the framework of a proximity effect theory shows that hot spots have a reduced pair …

Attitudes, Subjective Norms, And Perceived Behavioral Control Of Perianesthesia Nurses' Intentions To Engage In Mindful Self-Care, Brenda Sanya Jan 2023

Attitudes, Subjective Norms, And Perceived Behavioral Control Of Perianesthesia Nurses' Intentions To Engage In Mindful Self-Care, Brenda Sanya

Theses and Dissertations

Study Purpose and Design: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions to engage in mindful self-care among nurses working in the perianesthesia setting. The study utilized cross-sectional design and was guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: Modified Theory of Planned Behavior questionnaire and Mindful Self Care Scale were utilized for data collection among 85 perianesthesia nurses using a survey through the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). Findings: Regression analyses demonstrated that attitude (β=0.51, t=5.63, p=0.001) and self-compassion and purpose (β=0.29, t=2.54, p=0.013) were significant factors …

Distracted, Bored, And Disengaged: How To Reengage Gen Z Learners In The Secondary School Classroom, Sharon Kay Stout Jan 2023

Distracted, Bored, And Disengaged: How To Reengage Gen Z Learners In The Secondary School Classroom, Sharon Kay Stout

Theses and Dissertations

With a plethora of digital tools at their disposal and knowledge at their fingertips, Generation Z students must be engaged in ways that differ from previous generations of students. Using Ryan and Deci’s (2000, 2020) self-determination theory and the Student Engagement Core model proposed by Bundick et al. (2014), this qualitative research study used semi-structured interviews and focus groups to research the best ways to engage Gen Z students in a classroom setting. Data was coded using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006), with the self-determination theory’s three tenets, relatedness, autonomy, and competence, serving as the initial coding framework. Results …

Integrating Technology Into Wildlife Surveys, Sally E. Yannuzzi Jan 2023

Integrating Technology Into Wildlife Surveys, Sally E. Yannuzzi

Theses and Dissertations

Technology is rapidly improving and being incorporated into field biology, with survey methods such as machine learning and uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) headlining efforts. UAS paired with machine learning algorithms have been used to detect caribou, nesting waterfowl and seabirds, marine mammals, white-tailed deer, and more in over 19 studies within the last decade alone. Simultaneously, UAS and machine learning have also been implemented for infrastructure monitoring at wind energy facilities as wind energy construction and use has skyrocketed globally. As part of both pre-construction and regulatory compliance of newly constructed wind energy facilities, monitoring of impacts to wildlife is …
