The Critical Role Of Happiness In Education: Resilience, Retention, And What Happy Teachers Do Differently, Jill Marie Hayes White Jan 2023

The Critical Role Of Happiness In Education: Resilience, Retention, And What Happy Teachers Do Differently, Jill Marie Hayes White

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Teachers are unhappy, stressed, and leaving the field at an alarming rate. This paper analyzes how teacher happiness is related to resilience and retention. It also looks for patterns that identify what happy teachers do differently at work. To complete this investigation, current K-12 public school teachers throughout Iowa completed electronic surveys that assessed their happiness, resilience, and work life. These surveys included the Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999), the Brief Resilience Scale (Smith, et al., 2008), and 14 additional survey questions created by the researcher. Correlational, comparative, and descriptive analyses were completed to examine potential relationships and …

From Art To Propaganda: The Shift In The Concept Of The “Most Dead” In True Crime Literature, Hannah Mcconkey Jan 2023

From Art To Propaganda: The Shift In The Concept Of The “Most Dead” In True Crime Literature, Hannah Mcconkey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis studies the shift of the true crime genre from art to inescapable propaganda. This change is due, in part, to the politization of the genre by modern society. This includes the concept of the “most dead” seen within the true crime genre over the past several decades. The idea of the most dead is the belief that some victims of crimes are more or less dead depending on how marketable their demographic is. For instance, a blonde, Caucasian child would be considered the most dead while a woman of color in the sex work industry would be the …

Out In Education: A Qualitative Study Examining The Intersectionality And The Lived Out Experiences Of Prek–12 Lgbtq+ Educators, Landon Wood

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The role of a teacher is typically stereotyped as adhering to the status quo and societal norms, but LGBTQ+ educators and their intersecting identities have the power to interrupt the norm and move toward inclusion and advocacy for all, thus allowing the concepts of critical theory and queer theory to intersect. I have titled this merger queertical theory to discuss how LGBTQ+ teachers and their intersecting identities/nuanced perceptions and lived experiences can enact change in the field of education. Little research or information exists regarding how LGBTQ+ educators manage, handle, or even perceive intersectionality in their profession.

This qualitative study …

Characterizing Genetic Diversity And Testing For Fisheries Induced Evolution In Southeastern Kansas Populations Of Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus), Morganne C. Borsh Jan 2023

Characterizing Genetic Diversity And Testing For Fisheries Induced Evolution In Southeastern Kansas Populations Of Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus), Morganne C. Borsh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) is a popular and versatile sport fish with wide distribution. Fisheries management of the species is generally nebulous due to the additive role of environmental factors, genetics, social interactions, and alternative reproductive tactics in determining bluegill growth. Size structure could be further influenced by angling pressure: large parental males are more susceptible to harvest than smaller cuckolders. The systematic removal of large individuals through angling can result in stunted populations via fisheries induced evolution (FIE). In southeastern Kansas, bluegill from popularly fished impoundments are projected to have smaller sizes compared to isolated or inaccessible impoundments from the …

Can White Nationalist Rhetoric Increase Prejudice Toward Mexican Immigrants?, Nathan Lewey Jan 2023

Can White Nationalist Rhetoric Increase Prejudice Toward Mexican Immigrants?, Nathan Lewey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Western populism wave of ethno-nationalism (i.e., exclusionary resistance to egalitarianism: exclusionist belief in the superiority of ingroup goals over superordinate goals that are inclusive of all cultures) may increase prejudice toward minorities (Schmuck & Matthes, 2017). Integrated threat theory (ITT; Stephan & Stephan, 1996) states that prejudiced attitudes are mediated by four types of threat, which are affected by quantity and quality of intergroup contact (Stephan et al., 2000). These threats include realistic threat (e.g., fear of losing one’s job to an immigrant), symbolic threat (e.g., fear of losing one’s societal values/norms to a foreign culture), intergroup anxiety, and …

Intimate Partner Violence Stigma: The Intersection Of Race And Socioeconomic Status, Antoinette Fleming Jan 2023

Intimate Partner Violence Stigma: The Intersection Of Race And Socioeconomic Status, Antoinette Fleming

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Approximately 36% of all women in the United States will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at some point in their lifetime (Smith et al., 2018). Intimate partner violence can cause physical injury, poor mental health, chronic health problems, hospitalization, disability, or death (Breiding et al., 2015). Stigma is another consequence associated with IPV. Many victims of IPV report feeling guilt, denial, shame, and embarrassment as a result of the intimate partner violence victimization (Lichtenstein, 2006). Additionally, African American (Black) victims may be more heavily stigmatized than European American (White) victims. Socioeconomic status (SES) may also affect a person’s perception of …

Principals’ Knowledge Of Trauma-Informed School Practices, Elsa Leyhe Jan 2023

Principals’ Knowledge Of Trauma-Informed School Practices, Elsa Leyhe

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Trauma has become a larger issue in schools, and it is necessary for school administrators, specifically principals, to be fully aware of and equipped to deal with trauma in the student body. There is limited quantitative research on what principals currently know about trauma and trauma-informed practices. To help fill this need for more quantitative data, this research study surveyed principals in two Midwest states to address the following questions: To what extent do principals know about traumainformed care in schools? Did the principals receive any training on trauma-informed care in their graduate/certification programs? Did they seek training on their …

Restoring Human And More-Than-Human Relations In Toxic Riskscapes: “In Perpetuity” Within Lake Superior’S Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Sand Point, Valoree Gagnon, Evelyn H. Ravindran Jan 2023

Restoring Human And More-Than-Human Relations In Toxic Riskscapes: “In Perpetuity” Within Lake Superior’S Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Sand Point, Valoree Gagnon, Evelyn H. Ravindran

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Lake Superior’s Keweenaw Bay is the ancestral and contemporary homeland of the Anishinaabe Ojibwa and their relatives. It is also a toxic riskscape: Its waters, shorelines, and fish beings are polluted by an unknown tonnage of legacy mining waste rock called “stamp sands,” which contain unsafe levels of toxic compounds. This paper describes Ojibwa stewardship principles and reciprocal obligations, illustrating First Treaty With Gichi-Manitou practices of restoring relations within a toxic riskscape. Defined here, riskscapes are places and spaces where pollution/toxicity relations are continually reconfigured in literal, symbolic, and systemic ways. We share a story from Keweenaw Bay’s Sand Point …

The New Public Nuisance: Illegitimate And Dysfunctional, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 2023

The New Public Nuisance: Illegitimate And Dysfunctional, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

Leslie Kendrick’s defense of the new public nuisance fails to come to terms with legitimacy objections to such actions based on the rule of law and norms of democratic accountability. Nor is the new public nuisance a “second best” solution to widespread social problems. These actions rest on joint ventures between prosecutors and personal-injury lawyers that are likely to generate over- and under-deterrence and risk runaway liability.

Optimization Of The Modular Reinforced Bone Scaffold For Customized Alveolar Bone Defects, Meisam Omidi, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Lobat Tayebi

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

A modular reinforced bone scaffold with enhanced mechanical properties has recently been developed by our group. It includes: 1) A load-bearing module: a skeleton which is made of a slowly degradable material, undertaking mechanical necessities of the scaffold, and 2) A bio-reactive module: a porous and biodegradable component undertaking biological necessities of the scaffold. The load-bearing module is placed into the bio-reactive module to reinforce it. This paper is dedicated to optimizing the load-bearing module for a certain customized alveolar bone defect. More specifically, a 3D-printed skeleton, made of polycaprolactone (PCL), is optimized based on the boundary conditions of the …

We propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurement of the deeply virtual compton scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentange the contribution of the DVCS² term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provies a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target …

Practicing Queer Legal Theory Critically, Kendall Thomas Jan 2023

Practicing Queer Legal Theory Critically, Kendall Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

This introduction to the Critical Analysis of Law special issue on queer legal studies excavates three conjugal artifacts: an academic manuscript delineating interracial and same-sex marriages as loci of state surveillance and unfreedom; a TED Talk on same-sex marriage as irrefutably queer; and the United States Supreme Court decision holding same-sex marriage a constitutional right. These artifacts, along with their singular referent (state-sanctioned marriage), point to what is or should be critical about the interdiscipline of queer legal studies: theorization not only of the subjectification of subjects of gender and sexual regulation (spouses, singles, you and me), but also theorization …

Consumer's Perceptions Of Sustainable Products Through Social Media, Alessandra M. Cutone Jan 2023

Consumer's Perceptions Of Sustainable Products Through Social Media, Alessandra M. Cutone

Honors Theses and Capstones

Within the past 10 years, marketing has shifted drastically. Companies have slowly made the switch from mailers and print marketing to a variety of digital marketing forms in order to keep the attention of their consumers. This research examines consumer’s perceptions of advertisements through social media influencers relating to sustainable products. More specifically, what drives consumers to buy eco-friendly products on social media? Does the sustainability focus of the influencer matter for product endorsement? And along with that, does there need to be a match between the sustainability focus of both the product and the influencer? The results of this …

‘Have They Talked About Us At All?’ The Moral Distress Of Healthcare Social Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Investigation In The State Of Texas, Sophia Fantus, Rebecca Cole, Lataya Hawkins, Priyanjali Chakraborty Jan 2023

‘Have They Talked About Us At All?’ The Moral Distress Of Healthcare Social Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Investigation In The State Of Texas, Sophia Fantus, Rebecca Cole, Lataya Hawkins, Priyanjali Chakraborty

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Amid the ongoing pandemic, as overburdened and underfunded health systems are requiring health care social workers (HSWs) to assume responsibilities beyond their scope of practice, institutional constraints have undoubtedly heightened encounters of moral distress (MD). MD is the psychological disequilibrium that arises when institutional factors obligate an individual to carry out a task that violates their professional and/or personal ethics. Our qualitative study investigated HSWs’ (n = 43) MD in Texas during the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic. Findings from our study indicate that MD occurs across five levels: (i) patient care decisions; (ii) personal care decisions; (iii) team/unit decisions; (iv) …

The West’S Stigma, And Why It Loses Global Support By Its Own Actions, Ayman Zaineldine

Faculty Journal Articles

The Ukraine war has exposed, yet again, the deep skepticism of Western intentions across the Global South, undermining efforts to strengthen the rules-based liberal global order. But this is not inevitable as it is a result of policies the West has been pursuing for a long time, which it now must change if it wants to fix its credibility.
