Inference Methods For Token-Level Topic Assignments With Fixed Topics, Stephen Cowley
Inference Methods For Token-Level Topic Assignments With Fixed Topics, Stephen Cowley
Theses and Dissertations
Topic modeling, an unsupervised technique used to gain high-level understanding of a large collection of documents, often involves two major goals: The discovery of topics used in the corpus (topic-discovery) and the assignment of topics to individual words (token-level topic assignment). While Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) normally performs both of these steps simultaneously, some situations require only the token-level topic assignments, using fixed topics. We evaluate three topic assignment strategies using fixed topics -- Gibbs sampling, iterated conditional modes, and mean field variational inference -- to determine which should be used when only token-level topic assignment is needed. Among these …

While the U.S. has seen an increase of students of color in K-12 schools, the teaching profession faces a shortage of teachers of color. A range of issues, including engaging and retaining teachers of color, learning outcomes, and ensuring academic success for students, all contribute to the shortage. Teaching focused Grow Your Own (GYO) programs have gained popularity as a grassroots effort to diversify the teaching profession to reflect current student demographics. This study examined existing teaching GYO collaboration models within a K-12 district and a post-secondary institution. The qualitative and exploratory study reviewed the benefits of the GYO Future …
When Deliberation Is Not Possible: Moral Dilemmas In Fundraising, Jessica Burgess, Jane Hudson, John White
When Deliberation Is Not Possible: Moral Dilemmas In Fundraising, Jessica Burgess, Jane Hudson, John White
Plymouth Business School
Extant literature highlights the importance of ethical fundraising, exacerbated by recent increased public attention and media criticism. Arguably this increased attention calls for a deeper examination and understanding of the types of moral scenarios and dilemmas fundraisers encounter. Furthermore, fundraisers are often under intense time pressure to solve the dilemma and thus require quick, on-the-spot decisions formulated from intuition. Currently there are limited resources and training to help fundraisers implement ethical fundraising in their work; additionally, there is negligible education or skills training to help guide them in scenarios requiring intuition. Moreover, current literature fails to examine what these situations …

High unpredictability has emerged as a dimension of early-life adversity that may contribute to a host of deleterious consequences later in life. Early-life unpredictability affects development of limbic and reward circuits in both rodents and humans, with a potential to increase sensitivity to stressors and mood symptoms later in life. Here, we examined the extent to which unpredictability during childhood was associated with changes in mood symptoms (anhedonia and general depression) after two adult life stressors, combat deployment and civilian reintegration, which were assessed ten years apart. We also examined how perceived stress and social support mediated and /or moderated …

France In The Middle East: A Democratic Justification For Military Interventions In Iraq And Beyond., Nicolas Demeure, Brice Tseen Fu Lee
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
How did France’s refusal to take part in the war on Iraq in 2003 has created the conditions that legitimizes its future military interventions abroad? In this paper, a discourse analysis of the official French Foreign Policy Discourse is done to show why saying no to war in 2003 paradoxically allows France to carry out military interventions in 2015. This paper argues that France, while perpetrating an existing discourse of democracy opposing the civilized against the uncivilized that legitimates Foreign policy as a security tool, by its refusal, transformed military intervention a latent policy andlegitimized the French Self as …

Growing food autonomously on Mars is challenging due to the Martian soil's low nutrient content and high salinity. Understanding how plants adapt and evaluating their nutritional attributes are pivotal for sustained Mars missions. This research delves into the regeneration, stress tolerance, and dietary metrics of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) across different Mars Global Simulant (MGS-1) concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 75%). In our greenhouse experiment, 75% MGS-1 concentration significantly inhibited sweet potato growth, storage root biomass, and chlorophyll content. This concentration also elevated the plant tissues' H2O2, proline, and ascorbic acid levels. Higher MGS-1 exposures (50 and 75%) …

Abstract
The stages of adolescent development are generally at the age of high school students who are equipped with developmental tasks to have a good self-identity. Previous research mentioned that there was a public opinion that one form of achieving successful students' self-identity is that they succeed in becoming students at the State Higher Education Universities (PTN). In order to meet these perfect expectations, some students try to be istiqomah in learning by following tutoring program outside of school. By using quantitative research and data collection using purposive random sampling, this research tries to see how the relationship between …

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
Today’s, general of Muslim community only recognizes one type of recitation method of the Qur'an, specifically riwayat Hafsh 'an Ashim min Tariq Syathibiyah. This recitation became an international standard among qiraat scholars, students, and the general of Muslims. Qiraat sciences collect the principles of different recitation of the Qur'an which are attributed to qiraat scholars (a'immah al-qira'at). Based from Abul Fadhl Ar-Razi's theory about the meaning of Sab'atu Ahruf, the different recitations of the Qur'an (Ikhtilaf al-Qira'ah) have several criteria, including: Differences in nouns (Isim), verbs (Fi'il), cases ( I'rab), adding and subtracting words (Ziyadah wa Naqishah), prioritizing and ending …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Opinions from the various stakeholders of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), such as conference commissioners, university presidents/chancellors, bowl executives, and coaches, are numerous and well documented by the popular media since the establishment of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998. The public discourse offered by the various popular media sources significantly influenced the behaviors and perspectives of others on the prospects of a Division I FBS playoff before the BCS. Few academic and historical reviews of the core event stakeholders (i.e., athletic directors, coaches, and players) involved with the playoff debate have been formally organized prior to …

The Role Of Policy, Rituals And Language In Shaping An Academically Focused Culture In Hbcu Athletics, Ralph Charlton
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Increasing the graduation rates of student athletes is one of the more visible NCAA academic goals. Overall student-athlete graduation rates have improved significantly among many institutional members. However, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) student-athlete graduation rates lag considerably behind. Although the NCAA asserts that a causal relationship exists between lack of economic resources and lower student-athlete graduation rate for HBCUs, the presence of additional impacting factors are also admitted as not all HBCUs are struggling in graduating their athletes. Seeking an additional explanation for graduation rates, this case study examined key components of organizational culture in the form of …
