Lived Experiences Of College-Educated African American Males During Police Interactions In Central Kentucky, Lawerence Eric Charles Jan 2023

Lived Experiences Of College-Educated African American Males During Police Interactions In Central Kentucky, Lawerence Eric Charles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent high-profile incidents involving police interaction with Black citizens have increased community outrage and racial divisions between police and African Americans. Despite previous research on relations between African Americans and police, little literature has focused on the lived experiences of college-educated African American males when interacting with police. In the study 12 participants were interviewed. The analytical approach was grounded theory, which identified seven themes that most of the men had in common. One shared lived experience expressed the need for collaborative and inclusive policies that prevent bias, police brutality, and wrongful arrest and detention of the African American community. …

Long-Term Psychological Adaptation Of U.S. Human Resource Personnel In Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha Ann Denson Jan 2023

Long-Term Psychological Adaptation Of U.S. Human Resource Personnel In Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha Ann Denson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted employee psychological outcomes in various workforce sectors. Although research showed that U.S. human resource (HR) employees experienced unique occupational challenges during the pandemic, the literature did not explore pandemic-related psychological outcomes in this population. This quantitative survey-based study included a purposive sample of 294 U.S. HR professionals to explore the pandemic’s impact on their psychological well-being. The transactional model of stress and coping served as the theoretical framework to understand the independent effects of appraisal, meaning-based coping, and coping efforts on psychological well-being. A mediation analysis was used to understand the …

Perceptions Of 9-1-1 Telecommunicators High-Stress Emergency Calls, Danielle Holland Jan 2023

Perceptions Of 9-1-1 Telecommunicators High-Stress Emergency Calls, Danielle Holland

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many research studies have been conducted on the effects of high-stress emergency calls on emergency personnel, such as police officers and firefighters. However, research was lacking on the effects of high stress calls on 9-1-1 telecommunicators. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine how 9-1-1 telecommunicators perceived and responded to high-stress emergency calls. The theoretical framework was based on Bandura’s self-efficacy theory and social cognitive theory. The study was guided by three research questions that focused on (a) the short- and long-term effects of stress experienced by 9-1-1 dispatchers, (b) the aspects of calls that telecommunicators perceived …

Space Debris Mitigation: A Unified Policy Framework, Forrest Randall Jones Jan 2023

Space Debris Mitigation: A Unified Policy Framework, Forrest Randall Jones

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Space debris is a growing problem that impacts the ability to maneuver and conduct space missions, creates hazards for people on Earth, and has the potential for severe environmental damage. Clean-up efforts are not viable in the modern era due to a lack of viable, affordable, and safe technology conducive to such lines of effort. This leaves mitigative and preventative policy measures as the most effective way to proffer a solution to the problem. Public policy has largely failed to address space debris mitigation effectively due to the fragmentation of policies standards and a lack of horizontal integration of policies …

Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente Jan 2023

Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The criminal justice system has established interventions for those who have mental illness and have been charged with criminal complaints. In New York State, the Mental Health Court has been established to address these issues and is to be used by all counties. However, the treatment and probation interventions vary from county to county. Saratoga County uses a Single Point of Access (SPOA) which receives referrals from the general court and probation officers. SPOA refers clients to a variety of treatment interventions available in the county. In Monroe County, the Mental Health Court refers the criminally involved/mentally ill individual to …

Perceptions And Knowledge Of Information Security Policy Compliance In Organizational Personnel, Jesus M. Mosqueda Jan 2023

Perceptions And Knowledge Of Information Security Policy Compliance In Organizational Personnel, Jesus M. Mosqueda

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

All internet connected organizations are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks due to information security policy noncompliance of personnel. The problem is important to information technology (IT) firms, organizations with IT integration, and any consumer who has shared personal information online, because noncompliance is the single greatest threat to cybersecurity, which leads to expensive breaches that put private information in danger. Grounded in the protection motivation theory, the purpose of this quantitative study was to use multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between perceived importance, organizational compliance, management involvement, seeking guidance, and rate of cybersecurity attack. The research question for …

The purpose of this research was to explore how male sexual offender recidivism impacted sex crime investigations. Recidivism is a widely recognized social problem that affects all of society. Understanding the influence that male sex offender recidivism may have on a sex crime investigation is key to recognizing its relationship to recidivism. The methodology used in this study was a basic qualitative inquiry to explore how male sex offender recidivism impacts sex crime investigations. Based on Hirschi’s social bond theory, the study addressed ways a sexual offender may conform to societal requirements through attachments and personal values. The application of …

Relationship Between Substance Use, Alcohol, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms In Law Enforcement, Vanessa Nash Jan 2023

Relationship Between Substance Use, Alcohol, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms In Law Enforcement, Vanessa Nash

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers are plagued by a variety of traumatic incidents and organizational stressors. As a result, officers are more likely to use maladaptive coping skills and develop stress-related disorders. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictive relationship between substance use, alcohol use, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS)/dissociation symptoms in 107 law enforcement officers using the Personal Observation Wellness and Evaluation Report- POWER Portfolio survey through an archival dataset. Lazurus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping was used for the theoretical understanding of the current study. The independent variable for this study was PTSS as …

Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma Jan 2023

Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States needs migrant workers to fill the labor market gap because baby boomers are retiring from the US workforce in large numbers beginning in 2020. Approximately 2.1 million migrants came from Africa to fill the U.S. labor shortage. Many of these African migrants faced challenges with English language proficiency. There are benefits to the United States involved with increasing the economic wellbeing of migrants, such as reducing remigration, increasing the high-skilled labor force, and increasing cultural diversity. This study used Maslow’s motivational theory to test significant relationships between perceptions of English language proficiency (PELP) and economic life satisfaction …

Adding Women To The Conversation On Safe Consumption Sites: A Qualitative Interview Study With Poor And Marginalized Women Who Use Illicit Substances, Kaitlin Waechter

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Women’s erasure from discourses pertaining to substance use and safe consumption sites (SCSs) means harm reduction efforts are developed through the male lens. This research seeks to discover why women do (or do not) access SCSs so as to determine if and how SCSs address the unique gendered needs of women who use illicit substances. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 14 women-identified individuals who use illicit substances. Participants were recruited from a non-profit organization that offers harm reduction, but is not itself a SCS in order to capture a full range of perspectives on the SCS in their community. …

“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison Jan 2023

“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previously imprisoned women have long been sounding the alarm about the harms of strip searching and calling for it to be banned. However, it remains a routine prison practice and research into it is scant. Furthermore, Canada is incarcerating Indigenous women at genocidal levels and disproportionately imprisoning Black women. Therefore, my research explored the use of strip searching in federal prisons through anti-colonial and anti-racist feminist frameworks, specifically, abolition feminism.

My research was grounded in the ethic of relational accountability and centred reciprocity, respect, and responsibility in each phase. I gathered stories from 23 formerly incarcerated women from across Canada …

Exploring Spectral Bias In Time Series Long Sequence Forecasting, Kofi Nketia Ackaah-Gyasi, Sergio Valdez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang Jan 2023

Exploring Spectral Bias In Time Series Long Sequence Forecasting, Kofi Nketia Ackaah-Gyasi, Sergio Valdez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Transformers have achieved great success in the task of time series long sequence forecasting (TLSF) in recent years. However, existing research has pointed out that over-parameterized deep learning models are in favor of low frequency and could be difficult to capture high-frequency information for regression fitting task, named spectral bias. Yet the effect of such bias on TLSF problem, an auto-regressive problem with a long forecasting length, has not been explored. In this work, we take the first step to investigate the spectral bias issues in TLSF task for state-of-the-art models. Specifically, we carefully examine three different existing time series …

Punishment Without The State, I. Bennett Capers Jan 2023

Punishment Without The State, I. Bennett Capers

Faculty Scholarship

People are speaking up on social media and in other virtual spaces, sometimes to spur the criminal process, sometimes in response to the criminal system’s perceived failures, and even sometimes completely indifferent to the criminal system. People are expressing moral condemnation. They are shaming, shunning, banishing, and canceling. What are the implications of punishment through virtual spaces, in lieu of the usual—and now seemingly antiquated—space of physical courtrooms? More broadly, when all the world can become a virtual courtroom, a “place” for judgment, what are the implications for how we think about crime itself? And perhaps most importantly, if social …

Sherman V. Department Of Public Safety: Institutional Responsibility For Sexual Assault, John C.P. Goldberg, Benjamin C. Zipursky Jan 2023

Sherman V. Department Of Public Safety: Institutional Responsibility For Sexual Assault, John C.P. Goldberg, Benjamin C. Zipursky

Faculty Scholarship

This article addresses the intersection of three important topics: sexual assault, police misconduct, and employer liability for employee torts. As to the last of these, while there have long been debates among jurists in the U.S. concerning the proper scope of respondeat superior liability, courts have mostly adhered to an approach that focuses on whether the employee acted for the purpose of serving the employer’s interests. The narrowness of this purpose-based test, as compared to available alternatives, makes it imperative for lawyers, judges, and scholars to be attentive to other, less well-known, bases for employer liability. In Sherman v Department …

On Measuring The Degree Of Resource Isolation In Elastic Network Slicing, Nitin Datta Movva

Master's Projects

With the growing popularity of 5G networks and their vast use cases, users must be provided with the services they request. Network slicing is a technique for establishing numerous distinct logical and virtualized networks over a shared multi-domain infrastructure. In particular, the emerging elastic slicing, which allows users to scale up or down the reserved amount of resources during the slice life cycle, is a promising technique to accommodate diverse network services more affordably. However, users may sometimes need more resources, which is impossible to provide due to the abundance of users and lack of additional resources. To our knowledge, …

All The Way To Hell: An Artist's Legal Descent Into The Underworld Of Oil And Gas, Madison S. Marlow Jan 2023

All The Way To Hell: An Artist's Legal Descent Into The Underworld Of Oil And Gas, Madison S. Marlow

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Eliza Evans’ project, All the Way to Hell, employs a novel legal strategy to challenge Oklahoma’s permissive fracking regulations by fragmenting mineral rights among thousands of co-owners, aiming to disrupt the forced pooling process. While her approach highlights systemic legal and environmental issues, the state’s industry-friendly framework and regulatory capture present significant barriers to meaningful change. The note argues that Evans’ activism underscores the need for legislative reform to balance individual property rights with environmental protection.

On February 10, 2021, and in the days thereafter, liberal American commentators showered Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett with superlatives and praise due to her masterful takedown of former President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial for incitement of the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot. Referring to a picture of Plaskett wearing a knee-length blue dress with draped sleeves, the political strategist (and daughter of House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi) Christine Pelosi took to Twitter to note that “[n]ot all superheroes wear capes. This one does!”

Plaskett is one of many Black Americans who has done the hard work of cleaning up …

Making Justice Available For Victims Of Sexual Misconduct Within The Prison System, Emma L. Bruder Jan 2023

Making Justice Available For Victims Of Sexual Misconduct Within The Prison System, Emma L. Bruder

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for amending the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to include a private cause of action, enabling survivors of sexual misconduct in confinement to seek judicial remedies. This amendment would enforce their Eighth Amendment rights and address the limitations imposed by the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA), which hinders access to justice for incarcerated individuals.

Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists’ Past Trauma And Workplace Interventions, Morgan Wickman Jan 2023

Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists’ Past Trauma And Workplace Interventions, Morgan Wickman

Honors Program Theses

Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is a type of indirect trauma wherein listening to the traumatic experiences of another causes a stress reaction. STS can lead to PTSD-like symptoms which can develop after only one instance. STS affects mental health professionals at high rates because they have high rates of exposure to traumatic content. In particular, therapists with a personal trauma history have an increased risk of developing STS, as they are more likely to identify with their client’s traumatic experience. This review examines how therapists’ STS severity and frequency is impacted by a personal trauma history. It also identifies workplace …
