Context-Aware Temporal Embeddings For Text And Video Data, Ahnaf Farhan
Context-Aware Temporal Embeddings For Text And Video Data, Ahnaf Farhan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Recent years have seen an exponential increase in unstructured data, primarily in the form of text, images, and videos. Extracting useful features and trends from large-scale unstructured datasets -- such as news outlets, scientific papers, and videos like security cameras or body cam recordings -- is faced with substantial challenges of volume, scalability, complexity, and semantic understanding. In analyzing trends, comprehending the temporal context is vital for uncovering patterns and narratives that are not apparent from a single video frame or text document. Despite its importance, many existing data mining and machine learning approaches overlook extracting evolutionary contextual features in …
The Disclosure Process Model And Formerly Justice Involved Juveniles: A Telephonic Audit Study, Morgan R. Wagner
The Disclosure Process Model And Formerly Justice Involved Juveniles: A Telephonic Audit Study, Morgan R. Wagner
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In most cases, individuals with juvenile records are supposed to have that record sealed from public view upon meeting certain conditions, including turning 18. However, it is often unclear whether juvenile records (sealed or unsealed) should be disclosed on applications (e.g., job, college). This study used a phone call audit methodology to examine the hiring practices of Texas fast-food restaurants (n = 280) regarding juvenile records. Additionally, this study tested the Disclosure Process Model as a method of disclosing criminal records to prospective employers. Employers did not report differences in likelihood of considering an applicantsâ?? record between the gender of …

Implementation Of State Of New Mexico's Manual Of Procedures Psab Supplement 12 Capital Assets By A Southern New Mexico School District In Disposal Of E-Waste In The Post Covid 19 Environment, Hector Serrato Giron
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused diverse social, economic, and political challenges. The particular challenge that was the focus of this study is the upsurge in electronic use and consequent upsurge in electronic waste. This was caused by the implementation of online instructional delivery processes during Covid-19 (Ermakova, 2021), the switch to home offices (Adejumo & Oluduro, 2021) and the fact that school districts have directed massive financial investments to instructional technology (Baldé & Kuehr, 2021). This trend of heightened e-waste generation is likely to continue (Jiang et al., 2021).
I used a qualitative approach to address the two research questions. …

Human-Centric Smart Cities: A Digital Twin-Oriented Design Of Interactive Autonomous Vehicles, Oscar G. De Leon-Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous vehicle (AV) technology is introduced as a solution to improve transportation safety by eliminating traffic accidents caused by human error, which is the leading cause of 90% of accidents. One key feature of AVs is sensing and perceiving their surrounding environment through processing observations collected from the environment. The perception system is essential for an AV to make informed decisions and safely navigate the environment. This study presents an image semantic segmentation algorithm developed in the area of computer vision to improve AV perception. The U-Net-based algorithm is trained and validated using a synthetically generated dataset in a simulation …

The Connection Between Correlational Control Rate And Successful Probation Discharge Rates In The United States, Myron Syvelle Hopes
The Connection Between Correlational Control Rate And Successful Probation Discharge Rates In The United States, Myron Syvelle Hopes
Dissertations (2016-Present)
This dissertation analyzes the connection between correctional rates and probation rates to find the harshness of a state’s correctional program that evaluates the successful completion of probation. The answer starts with correctional control conversion to a score assigned to each state and compared against their successful probation completion rate. The correctional control rates are the total number of persons within a state’s correctional system and from the Prison Policy Initiative. The study will employ Social Control Theory as the underlying theoretical framework in examining the harshness of correctional control rates as it relates to successful probation outcomes. The data evaluation …

An Evaluation Of Lead Concentration In Commercially Available Tiles, Daidre N. Gamboa
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Workers in the manufacturing and construction industries are at risk of lead exposure in projects that involve removal or installation of tiles, and other individuals exposed to lead, including children may also be at risk. The concern with lead in tiles is thought to be related to the glazing process or the country where the tile was produced. Multiple regulations are in place in the U.S. to protect people from lead exposure, including through surface coatings or painted surfaces. But these regulations do not cover glazed tiles. This study examined whether there are differences in lead concentration in (1) tiles …
Why Foundations? The Theory And Strategy Of The General-Purpose Foundation, Samsher (Sam) Singh Gill
Why Foundations? The Theory And Strategy Of The General-Purpose Foundation, Samsher (Sam) Singh Gill
The Foundation Review
As foundations increasingly grapple with the penetration of socioeconomic dissension into every facet of our country’s public culture, it has become difficult to evade the moral salience of whether philanthropic wealth aggregation and allocation reflect or even entrench the structures of material accumulation many now see at the root of declining support for liberalism across advanced economies.
This essay argues that contrary to growing internal and external anxieties about the role and legitimacy of general-purpose foundations in the United States, there is a sound theoretical expression of them as an essential institution in a liberal democracy. The core principle of …

A Case Study Of The Political Determinant Of Health On The Public Health Crisis Of Malaria In Nigeria, Bisola M. Olumegbon
A Case Study Of The Political Determinant Of Health On The Public Health Crisis Of Malaria In Nigeria, Bisola M. Olumegbon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Globally, there were about 229 million cases of malaria in 2022. The sub-Saharan African region accounted for 92% of the reported cases and 94% of deaths. Nigeria had the highest number of malaria cases and deaths, representing 27% of global cases. This scholarly project was a case study guided by the political determinants of health. Triangulation of data using thematic analysis was used to identify the political determinants of malaria in Nigeria and to understand how the concept of interaction contributes to the persistence of the disease. The analysis involved a deductive and inductive approach based on the literature …
The New Candian Defence: The Impact Of Undrip Article 30 On Canadian Domestic Defence Strategy, Preston Jordan Lim
The New Candian Defence: The Impact Of Undrip Article 30 On Canadian Domestic Defence Strategy, Preston Jordan Lim
Faculty Publications
Article 30 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples articulates a general ban on military activities that take place on Indigenous territory. Despite the potentially significant consequences of article 30 for Canadian defence policy, few scholars have devoted serious attention to the article. This article will fill that gap by discussing the meaning of article 30 and suggesting approaches to implementation that the Canadian state ought to adopt. This article argues that, far from constraining Canadian defence strategy, article 30 may well serve as a catalyst, encouraging Canadian defence planners to take a more community-based approach …

Perspectives On E-Scooters Use: A Multi-Year Cross-Sectional Approach To Understanding E-Scooter Travel Behavior In Portland, Oregon, Minju Kim, Nicholas M. Puczkowskyj, John Macarthur, Jennifer Dill
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Unique travel behavior patterns are observed as shared electric scooters (e-scooters) provided by private operators expand into U.S. cities. Three separate years of e-scooter ridership survey data from the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s E-scooter Pilot Programs were analyzed to ascertain the multi-year cross-sectional and demographic characteristics of e-scooter riders. A binary logistic regression model, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression model are used to analyze e-scooter mode substitution, trip purposes, and travel distance from 2018 to 2020 in Portland, Oregon. Since the introduction of e-scooter in 2018, respondents have been less likely to use their previous transportation, and especially vehicle …

Eur-443 The Compression Connection: Ncd And Knn In Law Enforcement Text Analytics, Gabriel T. Gillott
C-Day Computing Showcase
Facing a deluge of digital records, law enforcement needs advanced data sorting systems. This project uses a new NLP model, blending compression algorithms and KNN, to categorize Cobb County police reports by mental health, behavioral, and drug issues—vital for efficient resource allocation. The model employs Normalized Compression Distance (NCD) to discern text similarities, enhancing analysis of varying report styles. Early tests show promise in label categorization, but generalizing remains challenging, marking future research directions. This NLP advancement could revolutionize data handling in public safety, aiming to surpass current classification standards.

Teacher Certification During Multiple Pandemics In The Epicenter Of It All, Deborah Greenblatt 4509457
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Teacher certification exams were put on hold as New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis in March of 2020. State officials closed testing centers and school buildings, and teacher candidates began to panic as administrators at their student teaching placements worked feverishly to adjust. This changed teacher candidates’ ability to complete the performance assessment required for certification (edTPA). Concurrently, COVID-19 was disproportionally affecting the Black community (Phillips et al., 2020) and areas with limited financial resources. Based on the demographics of students at The City University of New York, there were extensive health challenges for many of …

The Right To Be Proselytized Under International Law, Ryan Cheney
The Right To Be Proselytized Under International Law, Ryan Cheney
BYU Law Review
Legal analyses of proselytism have tended to focus on the rights of the proselytizer and on the right of the target of proselytism, or “proselytizee,” to be free from such “interference.” However, such analyses do not fully account for all rights involved in proselytism. When people are prevented from being proselytized, such as by law or by persecution, an important consequence is that they are cut off from a significant source of information on and mechanism for exploring and joining other religions. Despite stigmatizations of proselytism, many people regularly accept it and learn about and join other faiths through it. …

Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24
Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
The United States' involvement in World War II resulted in the internment and relocation of people of Japanese descent on the home front. The Territory of Hawaii was comprised of over a hundred thousand Japanese residents, who were also slated to be relocated. By exploring the differences between the military generals placed in charge of the West Coast (General John L. DeWitt) and the Territory of Hawaii (General Delos C. Emmons), the treatment of the ethnic Japanese in the areas shows a broader context of morals and racial profiling in the United States.

Understanding Comprehensive Flood Risk With Noaa Data, Kate Quigley
Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)
The Beyond Floods app features a flood outlook score and detailed reports for each individual property. This score is an abstraction of more than 25 factors related to real estate, social perception, flood insurance, flood mitigation and losses, infrastructure, and geomorphology. Syndeste used data from NOAA’s digital elevation models and the New York City Panel on Climate Change sea level rise projections that NOAA published in its GeoPlatform for this effort. The Coastal Flood Loss Atlas (developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, derived from NOAA SLOSH models) and NOAA’s New York City 2050 flood risk scenario floodplains information were …
