Retention And Persistence Of Low-Income, First-Generation Rural College Students From West Virginia, Rachel D. Nieman
Retention And Persistence Of Low-Income, First-Generation Rural College Students From West Virginia, Rachel D. Nieman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A considerable body of research demonstrates that first-generation college students face greater obstacles to college retention, persistence and completion compared to their non-first-generation counterparts. However, the extant literature rarely explores rurality as a salient factor to understand these challenges. Even less visible in the literature are the experiences and voices of West Virginians. West Virginia is a predominantly rural state and ranks 49th in the nation in terms of educational attainment, with only 19.6% of residents over the age of 25 having earned at least a bachelor’s degree. While rural areas may experience multifaceted struggles, the educational attainment of …

Psychiatric Technicians’ Work-Related Stress And Self-Efficacy In Supporting Patient Suicide Prevention Programs, Chestena Roberts
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Psychiatric technicians provide one-on-one daily care for mentally ill persons in inpatient settings. Specifically, suicide prevention may be more intimidating for psychiatric technicians who assume their positions with minimal clinical education and training to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. The present research was conducted to explore self-efficacy in psychiatric technicians who perform suicide prevention protocols for mental health patients. To capture participants’ experiences, a phenomenological approach was used and semi structured interviews were conducted to collect data in the study. The conceptual framework of self-efficacy theory was applied to establish theoretical foundations for understanding how psychiatric technicians …

Teacher And Administrator Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Instructional Coaching, Judith Salazar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Instructional coaching focuses on increasing the effectiveness of instructional practices. However, little is known concerning the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding the role of instructional coaching related to student performance. This basic qualitative study was conducted to analyze the perceptions of administrators and teachers within one region in Texas. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 16 participants—eight administrators and eight teachers—using a researcher-designed questionnaire regarding the effectiveness of instructional coaching in addressing achievement gaps among African American, Hispanic, and European American students. Fullan’s coherence framework provided the basis for data analysis. Data collected from the interviews were analyzed and four …
Heterogeneity Of Rules In Bayesian Reasoning: A Toolbox Analysis, Jan K. Woike, Ralph Hertwig, Gerd Gigerenzer
Heterogeneity Of Rules In Bayesian Reasoning: A Toolbox Analysis, Jan K. Woike, Ralph Hertwig, Gerd Gigerenzer
School of Psychology
How do people infer the Bayesian posterior probability from stated base rate, hit rate, and false alarm rate? This question is not only of theoretical relevance but also of practical relevance in medical and legal settings. We test two competing theoretical views: single-process theories versus toolbox theories. Single-process theories assume that a single process explains people’s inferences and have indeed been observed to fit people’s inferences well. Examples are Bayes’s rule, the representativeness heuristic, and a weighing-and-adding model. Their assumed process homogeneity implies unimodal response distributions. Toolbox theories, in contrast, assume process heterogeneity, implying multimodal response distributions. After analyzing response …

Laughter and crying are universal signals of prosociality and distress, respectively. Here we investigated the functional brain basis of perceiving laughter and crying using naturalistic functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) approach. We measured haemodynamic brain activity evoked by laughter and crying in three experiments with 100 subjects in each. The subjects i) viewed a 20-minute medley of short video clips, and ii) 30 min of a full-length feature film, and iii) listened to 13.5 min of a radio play that all contained bursts of laughter and crying. Intensity of laughing and crying in the videos and radio play was annotated …

Community Perceptions Of Syringe Service Programs In Charleston, West Virginia: A Qualitative Socioecological Perspective, Kenya M. Burton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In rural areas of the United States, people who inject drugs (PWID) experience an array of obstacles to accessing adequate healthcare. Locations with high rates of drug use normally offer more healthcare options, including needle exchange programs but, in some communities, there is resistance to providing this kind of care. This increases mortality, morbidity, cost, and adds to the stigma experienced by this vulnerable group. The experiences of people with substance dependency, including PWID, has been widely explored throughout studies that reflect a need for increased support. However, the perspectives of the community, especially in rural areas, though equally important, …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teaching has never been an easy profession, but the swift transition from in-person to digital instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic made it significantly more difficult. Between a global pandemic and a nation's racial reckoning, teachers were forced to juggle work, family, and student responsibilities. While there were suggested tips on how to practice self-care, the findings on self-care have been conflicting, and there is a scarcity of research on the role that teacher self-care played in persistence for classroom teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore reported teacher self-care practices and how …

Learning Developers As Writers: The Four Tendencies Framework To Get Writing, Alicja Syska, Carina Buckley
Learning Developers As Writers: The Four Tendencies Framework To Get Writing, Alicja Syska, Carina Buckley
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Although writing is a key element of scholarly activity, Learning Development positioning within the third space means that Learning Developers expectations for writing may be internal as much as external, or a combination of the two, or neither. All too often, the lack of time is cited as a reason to not write, yet developing strategies to overcome this particular barrier does not give the whole story. Rather, it is necessary to understand our relationship with writing, our needs and proclivities, and also our inhibitions. This chapter presents a framework for understanding our writing tendencies, so we can then identify …
Aspirational Laws In Action: A Field Experiment, Ben Depoorter, Stephan Tontrup
Aspirational Laws In Action: A Field Experiment, Ben Depoorter, Stephan Tontrup
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines aspirational laws in a randomized field experiment. We analyze the impact of an unenforced public smoking ban on individual behavior and attitudes. The findings indicate that aspirational laws, like public smoking bans, can make rights holders sensitive to behavior that violates their rights, irrespective of the material consequences of infringements and their personal views about the law. The results present a mixed position in the debate between rights-based social movement lawyering and critics of hollow rights. On the one hand, aspirational laws can create unforeseen social frictions when rights are declared, but their implementation and enforcement are …
