City governments increasingly experiment with civic participation in the procurement and the realization of smart city technologies in order to improve the incorporation of human values. In this case study, the city of X changed its procurement approach for a new camera car service that ensures an ethically responsible, privacy-friendly and secure collection of images from public space, including their metadata. Two starting points drive this change: 1) in order to have more control over the data, the municipality develops its own machine learning models for processing the images and 2) a multi-stakeholder co-design project – including a citizen panel …
In-House Designers To Break Out Public Sector Auditing In A Manageable Way, Linda Meijer-Wassenaar, Marjorie Bakker-Joosse
In-House Designers To Break Out Public Sector Auditing In A Manageable Way, Linda Meijer-Wassenaar, Marjorie Bakker-Joosse
IASDR Conference Series
For Supreme Audit Institutions to live up to the expectations of Parliament and the public and meet the needs of the public sector organisations they audit, they need to break out of their traditional knowledge-driven role of public spending watchdogs. Human-centred design offers an alternative to more knowledge: knowledge-in-action. Yet, the current frame of auditors restrains them from experimenting with alternatives. This study shares our experiences as in-house designers at the Netherlands Court of Audit of enriching the current focus on siloed public administration with citizens’ perspectives and of finding alternative ways to increase audit impact. Moreover, we show the …
Design Making Its Way To The City Hall: Tensions In Design Capacity Building In The Public Sector, Suzan Boztepe, Per Linde, Alicia Smedberg
Design Making Its Way To The City Hall: Tensions In Design Capacity Building In The Public Sector, Suzan Boztepe, Per Linde, Alicia Smedberg
IASDR Conference Series
Public sector organizations have been increasingly turning to design in their pursuit to innovate and address pressing challenges that seem intractable through their existing ways of working. Design’s presence in the public sector is still a relatively recent phenomenon ridden with many challenges. Through a study of three municipalities in Sweden, we present tensions designers face as they work their way to build design capacity. We argue that making a place for design in organizational systems and their ways of working requires skillfully navigating these tensions. We describe each tension in terms of their contradictions embedded in dualities and discuss …

The paper deals with changing processes of the cultural heritage through different perspectives: how the power of the change can be recognized both in the historic art masters approach and in their representations? How these historic art masters have triggered iconographic and conceptual agents of innovation? How Design for Cultural Heritage can envision new sustainable scenarios taking into account sociopolitical, cultural and climatic changes? In this complex context and age, what are new models of cultural experiences? What is the role of digital in museums transformation? Herein we will explore new definitions of contemporary museology and museography, like the digitally …

Inspiration For Developing Service Design Prototypes Through Speculative Design - A Case Study In The Field Of Carbon Neutral In The Uk, Ziwei Lin, Yuxuan Wang
IASDR Conference Series
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the viability of Speculative Design in the creation of Service Design prototypes. Specifically, how speculative prototypes can facilitate participants' dialogue regarding their genuine visions. Second, this paper examines the performance of seven different speculative prototypes in a single carbon neutrality project in order to elaborate on the necessary characteristics of a speculative prototype. Our findings indicate that it is advantageous to create a service design prototype using Speculative Design. We argue that policymakers and governments can use Speculative Design to increase citizen engagement and collective imagination in projects such as carbon neutrality. …

“One of the most significant facts of our time is the predominance of organizations. Perhaps this is the most significant. It will take time to fully understand its effects on individuals' thinking and behavior. Only a few of them will not be affected by this conditioning process”. If we read this sentence today, for the first time, without knowing its context, date and source, we would first of all be struck by its timeliness. We could also assume that we are dealing with an extract from a publication in the field of economics or business organization aimed at investigating the …

Future mobility systems will likely incorporate more multimodal journeys. These multimodal journeys integrate multiple modes of transport, and their higher future prevalence highlights the importance of paying attention to the modality transfers within journeys. To carefully facilitate these transfers, we advocate the creation of passenger-oriented Multimodal Transport Hubs (MTHs), which integrate both infrastructure and services of multiple travel modalities to ensure high-quality transfers between the different modes of transport. This study is part of a research project investigating how Airport Hubs can transform into MTHs and aims to learn in practice how the case study FlyHub deals with new travel …

Are Service Designers Positioned To Design For Sustainability?, Kendon Jung, Mauricio Mejía
Are Service Designers Positioned To Design For Sustainability?, Kendon Jung, Mauricio Mejía
IASDR Conference Series
We have designed systems that influence the daily choices of 8 billion people and have brought our world to the brink of collapse as a result. In this context, designers, in general, have been concerned with sustainability for a long time. While the field has acknowledged that not only product design but also services and systems are spaces to address sustainability, much of the literature has centered on creating methods and tools. This work could be limited in preparing designers for action because prescriptive guides are rarely easy to implement in designing activities. Leveraging design to intentionally shift a linear …

How Exemplary Female Executive Leaders In Higher Education Use Five Principles Of Grit—Courage, Conscientiousness, Long-Term Goals, Resilience, And Excellence Versus Perfection—To Accomplish Extraordinary Results In Their Organizations, Julie Pettitt
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and describe how exemplary female leaders who hold executive roles in higher education use five principles associated with grit (courage, conscientiousness, long-term goals, resilience, and excellence versus perfection) to accomplish extraordinary results in their organizations. It challenges the notion that academic credentials and intelligence alone drive leadership success, emphasizing the role of grit in extraordinary leadership. This study delves into the barriers women encounter in reaching executive roles, their strategies for overcoming challenges, and how they leverage gritty qualities to facilitate and sustain transformative change. Methodology: A phenomenological design was …

A Qualitative Investigation Of A Setting-Wide Pbs Workforce Development Programme In An Adult Disability Setting, Deirdre Kearney, Shannon Sinnott, Olive Healy
Journal of Social Care
The presence of distressed behaviours can amplify the difficulties experienced by people with intellectual disabilities (ID), and place pressure on the provision of effective support by organisations and direct support personnel. Setting-wide positive behaviour support (PBS) is an evidence-based framework aimed at enhancing quality of life and reducing distressed behaviour for people with intellectual disabilities through systemic change. Implementation science offers a route to better understand how we can support organisations to adopt best practice into routine procedures. This study employed a qualitative research design to examine the facilitators and barriers of a workforce development programme in setting-wide PBS in …

Dissolving Discrimination: A Study And Critique Of Sexual Violence Against Disabled Individuals In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kaeley Sells
Dissolving Discrimination: A Study And Critique Of Sexual Violence Against Disabled Individuals In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kaeley Sells
Global Studies Senior Capstone
This paper examines and critiques current sexual violence against disabled individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa by evaluating the social and cultural stigma present that perpetuates cycles of vulnerabilities. Currently, women and girls with disabilities are disproportionally at risk for sexual violence as economic, cultural, and political structures in many Sub-Saharan African countries fail to recognize and adequately protect those with disabilities. Incorporating evidence from journals, books, reviews, and studies, this paper demonstrates the need for non-government and governments actors to recognize the need to provide protection and trauma-informed care for disabled individuals.

Exploring Implicit Belief Alignment In Leaders And Followers, Candice F. Fast
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Through quantitative, nonexperimental research, this study focused on follower schemas among leaders and followers. The sample included 203 leaders and followers from Canada and the United States. The research addressed a literature gap through comparing leaders and followers’ implicit beliefs. In followership literature, two prominent areas of study regarding followers’ implicit beliefs are the implicit followership theory (IFT) and follower role orientation. Although many scholars have considered IFT and role orientation as the same construct, no scholar has ever compared the theories for correlation. Thus, the study addressed another literature gap through correlation and predictive analysis tests to compare between …

Assessing Organizational Readiness For Evidence-Based Practice (Ebp) Change For The Implementation Of A Postoperative Neuropathic Mastalgia (Pnm) Scale Among General Surgery Ambulatory Practices, Jessica Terry Gonzalez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Assessing postoperative neuropathic mastalgia (PNM) among oncology breast surgical patients is not commonly performed using a surgery specific pain scale at large South Carolina healthcare organization and is historically misdiagnosed, mismanaged, despite representing a common and significant complication (Gong et al., 2020; Humble et al., 2015; Mejdahl et al., 2019). Studies show that early identification of patients with neuropathic-specific pain following breast cancer-related surgery facilitates better pain management and patient outcomes (Pereira et al., 2017; Sipilä et al., 2012). Assessing organizational readiness to adopt Evidence-Based Practice change is recommended to facilitate the identification of potential barriers to implementation …
