Comparison Of Semi-Confined And Pasture-Based August Calving Beef Cow Systems, Hannah F. Speer, Harvey C. Freetly, M. E. Drewnoski
Comparison Of Semi-Confined And Pasture-Based August Calving Beef Cow Systems, Hannah F. Speer, Harvey C. Freetly, M. E. Drewnoski
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Limited pasture availability and increased pasture rental rates have generated a need to evaluate alternative cow-calf production systems. The current study compared cow and calf performance in two August-calving cow systems that combined corn residue grazing with 1) perennial forage grazing and hay or 2) summer drylot feeding and fall cover crop grazing. Differences in pregnancy rates between systems within year were not observed; however, the effect of production system on cow body condition and calf body weight at different time points varied across years. Overall, cow and calf performance were not negatively impacted in the drylot/cropland system, suggesting that …

Hsc-Derived Fatty Acid Oxidation In Steady-State And Stressed Hematopoiesis., Jayna J Mistry, Kristian Bowles, Stuart A Rushworth
Faculty Research 2023
Metabolism impacts all cellular functions and plays a fundamental role in physiology. Metabolic regulation of hematopoiesis is dynamically regulated under steady-state and stress conditions. It is clear that hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) impose different energy demands and flexibility during maintenance compared with stressed conditions. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation in HSCs remain poorly understood. In this review, we focus on defining the role of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) in HSCs. We first review the existing literature describing FAO in HSCs under steady-state hematopoiesis. Next, we describe the models used to examine HSCs under stress conditions, and, …

Humans have long been interested in relations among religion/spirituality (R/S), positive psychological constructs, and physical health. Furthermore, many religions attempt to influence behavior through health-related prescriptions about food choices, sexual activity, substance use, and resting. Similarly, positive psychological constructs have been discussed in light of their presumed benefits on both mental and physical health (Ryff & Singer, 1998). However, R/S and positive psychological constructs have only recently become objects of scientific investigation of their associations with physical health.

The Impact Of Unemployment And Female Labor Force Participation On Sex-Specific Suicide Rates Across U.S. States, 1979-2020, Jeffrey T. Lewis
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Using pooled cross-sectional state-level data from 1979-2020 to analyze the effects of economic conditions and female labor force participation on sex-specific suicide rates, I arrive at four main conclusions. First, I find that, for both males and females, the positive association between unemployment and suicide is stronger for the working-age population (aged 25-64) than for the total population. Second, I find that the unemployment-suicide link is stronger for females than for males. I estimate that a one percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate is predicted to increase the suicide rate of working-age females by 1.6%, compared to 0.8% for working-age …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
In this chapter, four honors deans reflect on the unique aspects of the honors dean's role. The authors argue that by being responsive to the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities they face daily, honors deans can enable honors to deliver on its promises to students and to serve the whole university community. Attentive to changing dynamics in honors education nationwide, the authors address how deans must confront myths about honors that bear the legacy of past realities while actively tending to justice in the admissions process, to recruiting and serving diverse populations, and to supporting an honors environment that addresses the …

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Obesity affects adults in the United States, leading to chronic diseases and reduced well-being. Time-Restricted Feeding (TRF) is a type of dietary intervention lacking current data regarding the effectiveness on facets of well-being. This study’s objective was to determine the effect of time-restricted feeding supplemented with whey protein isolate on food intake, sleep, and mood in overweight or obese adults. Nineteen participants were randomly assigned to the control or experimental group: 1) control, TRF, and 2) experimental, TRF with whey protein supplementation. Participants followed the assigned dietary intervention for 12 weeks. Every 4 weeks (baseline, week 4, week 8, and …
Short Circuiting The Administrative Judiciary: A Response To Linda Jellum, Marshall J. Breger
Short Circuiting The Administrative Judiciary: A Response To Linda Jellum, Marshall J. Breger
Scholarly Articles
Linda Jellum provides a powerful analysis of the status of the exhaustion process for the SEC administrative judiciary and more broadly of the entire administrative judiciary. Many of her arguments are telling and on point. I disagree with a number of her technical and statutory arguments, and even more so the consequences of her analysis for the administrative state as we know it.
Jellum's argument is that Congress did not intend to preclude district courts from hearing constitutional challenges to SEC adjudications because agency ALJs are not the right adjudicators to hear challenges to the constitutionality of their own operations.
Diet-Dependent Epigenetic Silencing Of Transposable Elements, Jennifer Mcintyre
Diet-Dependent Epigenetic Silencing Of Transposable Elements, Jennifer Mcintyre
Scripps Senior Theses
Rapidly changing dietary conditions are of concern as to how they influence our genome function and overall health. Transposable elements (TEs) are genomic parasites that replicate and move throughout the genome, causing disruptions that have been associated with aging, various diseases, and cancers. To mitigate damage, cells deposit repressive epigenetic marks at TEs to reduce their movement. Interestingly, it has been found that dietary metabolites can act as substrates, cofactors, or inhibitors for the enzymes that deposit epigenetic marks. Accordingly, I hypothesize that altered diets, and thus metabolite profiles, change the silencing of TEs. By rearing flies under different dietary …

The antimicrobial properties of kombucha are not well understood, but it is believed that they can be used against foodborne pathogens. In this study, its effectiveness was tested against two common food-borne and one yeast pathogens (E. coli, S. aureus, and C. auris). Three popular store-bought kombuchas (GT Synergy, Moss Beach, and Health-Aide Raw) and one home-brewed kombucha were used to study the antimicrobial properties of kombucha. Several nutrient broth tubes were individually inoculated with the microbes in question and were treated with kombucha (Figures 1-3). There were indications of bacteria settling at the bottom of all tubes except the …
Effects Of Fasting On The Oral Microbiome, Youyuan Wang, Leonard Moreno, Fernando Reyes
Effects Of Fasting On The Oral Microbiome, Youyuan Wang, Leonard Moreno, Fernando Reyes
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Humans are mostly made up of microbes. Multiple studies have estimated that bacterial cells outnumber human cells in the body, with our digestive systems harboring the highest concentrations of bacterial life. The oral microbiome is densely populated and of significant physiological importance. These microbial communities maintain tooth and gum health, aids in pre-digestion of foods, and even plays a defensive role — guarding their host from external threats that may lead to oral and systemic pathologies. Studies have shown that fasting can affect the gut microbiome, but there is currently insufficient research on how fasting intervals can affect the oral …

This thesis explores the multifaceted issue of misidentifying English Language Learners (ELLs) with learning disabilities (LDs) in the educational system. The study begins by delving into the complicated reasons underlying such misidentifications, recognizing the significance of understanding the complex interplay between language acquisition challenges and learning disabilities. Utilizing empirical evidence and conducting an extensive literature review, the research uncovers the intricate factors contributing to the misidentification of ELLs, including linguistic diversity, cultural biases, and the limitations of assessment tools. Following this exploration of the problem's dimensions, the thesis outlines solutions designed to prevent the misidentification of ELLs with LDs. These …
Beyond The Business Case: Moving From Transactional To Transformational Inclusion, Jamillah Bowman Williams
Beyond The Business Case: Moving From Transactional To Transformational Inclusion, Jamillah Bowman Williams
Seattle University Law Review
While workplace diversity is a hot topic, the extent to which the diversity management movement has effectively improved intergroup relations and reduced racial inequality remains unclear.1 Despite large investments in diversity and inclusion training and other company wide initiatives, historically excluded groups remain vastly underrepresented in leadership and the most lucrative careers, such as finance, law, and technology. This calls the efficacy of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts into question, particularly with respect to reducing racial inequality in the workplace.
This Article explains why it is time for organizational leaders to move beyond the transactional case for diversity and …

Court’S Choice Of Law Ruling Undermines Washington Community Property Law: A Critique Of Shanghai Commercial Bank V. Chang, Brian D. Hulse
Seattle University Law Review
This Article deals with the issues that arise when Washington courts face the following scenario. One spouse enters into a contract without the joinder (and perhaps without the knowledge) of the other spouse. Both spouses are domiciled in Washington. The contract has contacts with one or more jurisdictions other than Washington and is generally governed as to validity and interpretation by the law of another jurisdiction. The contracting spouse defaults and the other party to the contract obtains a judgment on the contract. The court confronts a question about the property to which the plaintiff will have recourse to collect …

The Humanitarian Crisis Of The Israeli Occupation And Settler Colonialism In The West Bank And Gaza, Sarah Raby
The Humanitarian Crisis Of The Israeli Occupation And Settler Colonialism In The West Bank And Gaza, Sarah Raby
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an extremely sensitive and passionate subject; however, it is often misrepresented in western media. The military occupation and illegal settler colonialism practices of Israel have led to numerous human rights abuses and ultimately have persuaded many international watchdogs, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, to label Israel an apartheid state. This literature review will discuss the tools of occupation used by Israel to oppress Palestinians including the separation wall, restriction of movement and blockades, and home demolition. It will further examine in detail the use of mass incarceration and excessive force used by military and …

Ethnic Fractionalization And Health In West Africa, Odia Kaba
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Artificial borders created during Africa's colonial era have had a lasting impact on the continent, specifically in relation to culture and ethnicity. This study investigates the relationship between ethnic diversity and health outcomes and health care infrastructure in West Africa. I explore the effects of ethnic fractionalization on various health outcomes such as life expectancy and mortality rates, health-related infrastructure and staffing, and disease and immunization levels. This paper will also discuss colonialism and its institutional legacy. The discussion of the findings will include the impact of ethnic fractionalization, GNI per capita, and foreign aid on these outcomes.

An Analysis Of Department Of The Air Force Bird Strikes And Precipitation, Jason Powell Mas, Cfmei, Atp
An Analysis Of Department Of The Air Force Bird Strikes And Precipitation, Jason Powell Mas, Cfmei, Atp
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This study explored the relationship between precipitation, the amount of time between precipitation events, bird strike risk, and the agricultural zone related to Department of the Air Force (DAF) aircraft operations. Certain bird species demonstrated a relationship between agricultural zones, precipitation, and length of time after a precipitation event and when an aircraft strike occurred. The types and frequency of bird strikes depend highly on the region and species struck. The Poisson regression revealed Cathartiformes as significantly struck by the DAF aircraft more often and can be predicted based on agricultural zone and precipitation. A binary regression did not demonstrate …

Indiana Teachers' Responses To Student Behaviors, Jennifer Dettmer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify which skillsets a successful teacher possesses to help students positively work through behavioral situations rather than immediately exit the student from the classroom. The common themes could allow school leaders to reflect, develop, or improve current strategies for helping teachers develop classroom management strategies within the classroom to help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. This qualitative study involved obtaining data from the Indiana Department of Education. The Indiana Department of Education provided email addresses for superintendents for public schools in Indiana. Superintendents, who agreed to allow teachers from their district …
Coordinated Rulemaking And Cooperative Federalism’S Administrative Law, Bridget A. Fahey
Coordinated Rulemaking And Cooperative Federalism’S Administrative Law, Bridget A. Fahey
Articles
“Cooperative federalism” is not just a model of federalism; it is a model of administration. From health care to air quality to emergency management, transportation, immigration, national security, and more, cooperative federalism is the regulatory model of choice. But scholars have yet to conceptualize a cooperative administrative law for cooperative federalism. As this Article shows, however, federal and state bureaucracies have devised intricate strategies for coordinating their implementation of the programs they jointly administer.
The Article begins to elaborate cooperative federalism’s unseen administrative apparatus by focusing on its distinctive form of legislative rulemaking, the workhorse of administrative law. I show …
“Nutrition Facts Labels” For Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning-Based Medical Devices—The Urgent Need For Labeling Standards, Sara Gerke

Artificial Intelligence (“AI”), particularly its subset Machine Learning (“ML”), is quickly entering medical practice. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has already cleared or approved more than 520 AI/ ML-based medical devices, and many more devices are in the research and development pipeline. AI/ML-based medical devices are not only used in clinics by health care providers but are also increasingly offered directly to consumers for use, such as apps and wearables. Despite their tremendous potential for improving health care, AI/ML-based medical devices also raise many regulatory issues.
This Article focuses on one issue that has not received sustained attention …

The pathway to stable and secure middle-class status involves two elements: the ability to postpone family formation to facilitate human capital investment and the ability to marshal the emotional and material resources needed to address children needs. Yet, the ability to meet the middle-class threshold for family investment is under assault as the class-based COVID-19 pandemic vulnerabilities and the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization illustrate. While the American Rescue Plan demonstrates the federal government's considerable ability to address children's needs, Dobbs represents the judicial assault on federal power and the ongoing devolution in responsibility for …
