Can Sotl Generate High Quality Research While Maintaining Its Commitment To Inclusivity?, Jill Mcsweeney, Matthew A. Schnurr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) faces an emerging challenge as it seeks to balance commitments to disciplinary inclusivity and scholarly quality. We undertake a scoping review of 64 articles across three leading SoTL journals to investigate how the literature balances these twin commitments by exploring what questions are being asked, what methods are being used, and how these may be impacting the inferences that are being made within that scholarship. We advocate for a more focused definition of SoTL that can help reinforce its legitimacy within institutional power structures of scholarship, and for partnerships across disciplinary boundaries to …

The goal, was to evaluate student perceptions of the flipped classroom model and to reflect …

Safely Correct Hyponatremia With Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: A Flexible, All-Purpose Method Based On The Mixing Paradigm, Sheldon Chen, Jerry Yee, Robert Chiaramonte Jan 2023

Safely Correct Hyponatremia With Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: A Flexible, All-Purpose Method Based On The Mixing Paradigm, Sheldon Chen, Jerry Yee, Robert Chiaramonte

Nephrology Articles

Treating chronic hyponatremia by continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is challenging because the gradient between a replacement fluid's [sodium] and a patient's serum sodium can be steep, risking too rapid of a correction rate with possible consequences. Besides CRRT, other gains and losses of sodium- and potassium-containing solutions, like intravenous fluid and urine output, affect the correction of serum sodium over time, known as osmotherapy. The way these fluids interact and contribute to the sodium/potassium/water balance can be parsed as a mixing problem. As Na/K/H(2) O are added, mixed in the body, and drained via CRRT, the net balance of …

Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean is enhanced when seed is treated with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo) prior to planting. In this study, our objective was to verify if Co and Mo application during the reproductive phase of the crop increases seed Co and Mo concentration without adverse effects on seed quality. Two experiments were conducted. First, we investigated foliar and soil Co and Mo application under greenhouse conditions. Next, we validated the results obtained in the first study. The treatments for both experiments consisted of Co doses combined with Mo, and a control without Co and Mo application. The …

Effects Of Elevated Extracellular Dopamine On Astrocytes In The Nucleus Accumbens, Mengfan Xia Jan 2023

Effects Of Elevated Extracellular Dopamine On Astrocytes In The Nucleus Accumbens, Mengfan Xia

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Nucleus accumbens is involved in processing of motivational and affective behaviors and plays a significant role in development and maintenance of substance use. Released from the ventral tegmental area into the nucleus accumbens, the mesolimbic dopamine controls incentive salience and facilitates learning of reinforcement and reward-related motor functions. Recent studies reveal that, in the context of cocaine exposure, dopamine transmission in the ventromedial striatum is pivotal to the regulation of initial drug use. Astrocytes, a major subpopulation of the brain glial cells, are an active component of the so-called tripartite synapse and communicate with neurons through the release of transmitters …

Life On A Ball: Multi-Week Tethered Behavior In Drosophila, Jazz Weisman Jan 2023

Life On A Ball: Multi-Week Tethered Behavior In Drosophila, Jazz Weisman

Student Theses and Dissertations

By studying head-fixed or rigidly tethered animals, neuroscientists have been able to make high-resolution neurophysiological and behavioral measurements during naturalistic tasks. Tethered paradigms have a particularly rich history in the study of insect behavior and in this thesis I describe technology that extends by one-hundred fold—from hours to weeks—the timescale over which individual Drosophila can be routinely studied while tethered in place. Specifically, I designed and constructed a new experimental rig that allows a rigidly tethered fly to live for at least two weeks within a virtual reality environment. The fly stands (and is free to walk) on an airsupported …

Social Welfare Policy In Post-Transition Chile: Social Democratic Or Neoliberal?, Paul W. Posner Jan 2023

Social Welfare Policy In Post-Transition Chile: Social Democratic Or Neoliberal?, Paul W. Posner

Political Science

Chile’s massive 2019 protests indicate a pronounced discrepancy between the country’s alleged establishment of social democracy and the public’s perception of pervasive inequity. To understand this discrepancy, this analysis evaluates the extent to which Chilean social welfare policy conforms to social democratic norms of promoting solidarity, equity, and universalism. Analysis of poverty reduction, pension, health care, and education policy demonstrates that Chile’s center-left governments succeeded in mitigating some of the more extreme elements of the social welfare policies inherited from the Pinochet regime. However, they failed to reverse their underlying logic, which reinforces stratification and inequity and undermines incentives for …

Determining Mating Type And Species Of A Natural Isolate Of Dictyostelium Using Molecular Techniques And Sexual Crosses, S.N. Baviskar, C. Catron, H. Jenkins, M. Smith Jan 2023

Determining Mating Type And Species Of A Natural Isolate Of Dictyostelium Using Molecular Techniques And Sexual Crosses, S.N. Baviskar, C. Catron, H. Jenkins, M. Smith

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cellular slime molds, Dictyostelium, are bactivorous, soil-dwelling amoebae. When food is available, cells reproduce asexually by binary fission. Under certain environmental conditions, such as darkness and humidity, Dictyostelium reproduces sexually. The sexual cycle is uniquely social and has unusual features. First, sexual reproduction in most eukaryotes usually involves fusion of two gametes. But, in Dictyostelium, triparental inheritance is observed (Bloomfield et al. 2019), in which gamete fusion involves more than two gametes. Second, most eukaryotic species have two sexes or mating types, but Dictyostelium species are known to have more than two mating types. Even though Dictyostelium species show variations …

Does Wing Use And Disuse Cause Behavioural And Musculoskeletal Changes In Domestic Fowl (Gallus Gallus Domesticus)?, Renée C. Garant, Bret W. Tobalske, Neila Ben Sassi, Nienke Van Staaveren, Dan Tulpan, Tina Widowski, Donald R. Powers, Alexandra Harlander-Matauschek

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Domestic chickens may live in environments which restrict wing muscle usage. Notably, reduced wing activity and accompanying muscle weakness are hypothesized risk factors for keel bone fractures and deviations. We used radio-frequency identification (RFID) to measure duration spent at elevated resources (feeders, nest-boxes), ultrasonography to measure muscle thickness (breast and lower leg) changes, radiography and palpation to determine fractures and deviations, respectively, following no, partial (one-sided wing sling) and full (cage) immobilization in white- and brown-feathered birds. We hypothesized partially immobilized hens would reduce elevated resource usage and that both immobilization groups would show decreased pectoralis thickness (disuse) and increased …

La Vuelta Del Perro Sin Parar: Systems Thinking In Costa Rican Schools To Address Nicaraguan Student Opportunity Gaps, Meghan Vismara Benavides Jan 2023

La Vuelta Del Perro Sin Parar: Systems Thinking In Costa Rican Schools To Address Nicaraguan Student Opportunity Gaps, Meghan Vismara Benavides

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

Costa Rican schools are struggling to navigate an influx of Nicaraguan migrant students. Studies and reports repeatedly show extensive opportunity gaps between native Costa Ricans and their migrant peers. Most existing global literature on gaps between immigrant and national populations focus on second language acquisition. However, Nicaraguans and Costa Ricans share a common language; thus, language does not explain these gaps in this context. A complex system of internal and external factors affects the educational outcomes of Nicaraguan migrant students in Costa Rica. This narrative case study through the theoretical lens of systems theory seeks to understand the perspectives of …

Nursing Interventions To Decrease Depressive And Anxious Symptoms In Hispanic-American Youth, Vanessa C. Hernandez Jan 2023

Introduction: Hispanic-American youth are less likely to receive mental health services despite being at increased risk for depression and anxiety. Having depression and anxiety at a young age can have detrimental long-term effects such as sexual risk behavior, delinquency, and suicide. Various kinds of nurses interact with this age group which can be a missed opportunity to intervene for the welfare of these youth. Interventions exist for depression and anxiety; however, they are not specific to nurses who care for young Hispanic-American patients. Methods: An integrative literature review was performed to identify nursing interventions for Hispanic American youth with depression …

On The Lawfulness Of Awards To Class Representatives, Benjamin Gould Jan 2023

On The Lawfulness Of Awards To Class Representatives, Benjamin Gould

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

When class actions are settled or the class prevails on the merits, successful class representatives are often net losers: their individual recovery does not cover the opportunity costs and other losses they have incurred in representing the class. For that reason among others, they frequently receive an award on top of their relief as class members. The federal courts of appeals had unanimously approved these awards until recently, when the Eleventh Circuit relied on two nineteenth-century cases to hold that they are always unlawful. That decision is now the subject of a cert petition. The Eleventh Circuit got it wrong. …
