Massive Small Bowel Resection In A 74-Year-Old Patient With Atrial Fibrillation-Induced Mesenteric Ischemia, Armand Edalati, Bita C. Behaeddin, Raul Aguilar, Shaikh Hai

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) in the setting of atrial fibrillation is a life-threatening abdominal emergency that requires immediate localization and clinical intervention to restore mesenteric perfusion for the prevention of developing bowel necrosis. As bowel ischemia rapidly progresses, serum metabolic derangements become prominent, guiding practitioners on effective therapeutic options. Ultimately, mesenteric ischemia progressively bolsters the possibility of a patient developing multiple organ dysfunction. Due to this minacious pathogenesis, rapid time to diagnosis can become the difference between life and death. Intraoperatively, emergent surgical intervention regarding bowel resection needs to be thoroughly reviewed and planned based on the patient's medical history …

Teacher Education and Certification Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shift work chronically disrupts circadian rhythms and increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanisms linking shift work and cardiovascular disease are largely unknown. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of chronically shifting the light-dark (LD) cycle, which models the disordered exposure to light that may occur during shift work, on atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the progressive accumulation of lipid-filled lesions within the artery wall and is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease. We studied ApolipoproteinE-deficient (ApoE−/−) mice that are a well-established model of atherosclerosis. Male and female ApoE−/− mice were housed in control 12L:12D …

The effect of operational parameters such as feed rate (FR), drum speed (DS), and concave clearance (CC) was studied on the performance of a pearling drum. The pearling drum consists of pearling cylinder, pearling sieve, concave, and outer casing of the drum. The response surface method with CCRD experimental design was used to study the effect of operational parameters on pearling drum. The considered levels for optimizing operational parameters viz., FR, DS, and CC were 40–80 kg/h, 5– 10 m/s, and 3–15 mm, respectively. The maximum pearling efficiency (PE) and minimum grain damage (GD) were found to be 98.40%, and …

Maternal Chemical Defenses Predict Ofspring Defenses In A Dendrobatid Poison Frog, Olivia L. Brooks, Jessie J. James, Ralph Saporito Jan 2023

Maternal Chemical Defenses Predict Ofspring Defenses In A Dendrobatid Poison Frog, Olivia L. Brooks, Jessie J. James, Ralph Saporito

2023 Faculty Bibliography

Within and among populations, alkaloid defenses of the strawberry poison frog (Oophaga pumilio) vary spatially, temporally, and with life history stage. Natural variation in defense has been implicated as a critical factor in determining the level of protection aforded against predators and pathogens. Oophaga pumilio tadpoles sequester alkaloids from nutritive eggs and are, thus, entirely dependent on their mothers for their defense. However, it remains unclear how tadpole alkaloid composition relates to that of its mother and how variation in maternally provisioned defenses might result in varying levels of protection against predators. Here, we demonstrate that natural variation in the …

Higher Sexual Excitation Is Associated With An Increase In Sex-Linked Substance Use In Women With A History Of Unwanted Sexual Contact, Harper R. Jones, Tierney K. Lorenz Jan 2023

Higher Sexual Excitation Is Associated With An Increase In Sex-Linked Substance Use In Women With A History Of Unwanted Sexual Contact, Harper R. Jones, Tierney K. Lorenz

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Survivors of unwanted sexual contact have an increased likelihood of using substances in sexual situations, which puts them at heightened risk for intoxication-related harms. Separately, research has indicated that women may intentionally use substances in sexual situations to either enhance pleasure (i.e., increase sexual excitation) and/or reduce sexual anxiety or shame (i.e., reduce sexual inhibition), a phenomenon termed sex-linked substance use (SLSU). A predominant assumption in the literature is that women with unwanted sex histories are more likely to disengage during sex, suggesting greater inhibition-related SLSU; however, there is little prior research directly examining if women who have unwanted sex …

A Long‐Term Obesogenic High‐Fat Diet In Mice Partially Dampens The Anti‐Frailty Benefts Of Late‐Life Intermittent Fasting, Yoko Henderson, Nazmin Bithi, Jie Yang, Christopher Link, Aili Zhang, Benjamin Baron, Eran Maina, Christopher Hine

Senior Honors Projects

The global obesity pandemic coupled with ever-growing life expectancies equates to hundreds of millions of individuals with potentially longer but not healthier lives. Aging is one of the risk factors for numerous maladies such as metabolic dis- order and frailty, which are exacerbated under obesity. Thus, therapeutic approaches that address obesity to ultimately improve afected individuals’ quality of life and extend their lifespan are needed. We previously reported that the every other day (EOD) fasting initiated late-life improved metabolic, musculoskeletal, and cognitive endpoints in standard rodent diet-fed mice. In the present study, using the same dietary intervention methodology, we tested …

Marine Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Variation in behavior within marine and terrestrial species can influence the functioning of the ecosystems they inhabit. However, the contribution of social behavior to ecosystem function remains underexplored. Many coral reef fish species provide potentially insightful models for exploring how social behavior shapes ecological function because they exhibit radical intraspecific variation in sociality within a shared habitat. Here, we provide an empirical exploration on how the ecological function of a shoaling surgeonfish (Acanthurus triostegus) may differ from that of solitary conspecifics on two Pacific coral reefs combining insight from behavioral observations, stable isotope analysis, and macronutrient analysis of gut and …

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases And Deworming Response In School-Aged Children In Retalhuleu, Guatemala, Rebeca Esther Vergara Greeno

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are amongst the most common diseases of poverty worldwide despite mass deworming campaigns. However, widespread use of benzimidazole anthelminthics in these campaigns has been associated with variable efficacy against three of the most common STHs, thus raising concerns regarding emerging resistance. Albendazole, in particular, has been shown to be least effective against Trichuris trichiura.

Methods: Our aim was to determine baseline prevalence and intensity of STH infections in rural school children living in Retalhuleu, Guatemala, and to evaluate the efficacy of single dose albendazole in infected children. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 557 children ages …

This study theologises on the Urban Poor Women and Children with Academics for Reaching and Delivering on UNSDGs in the Philippines (UPWARD-UP) Project research team’s collaboration with the Alliance of Peoples’ Organisation Along the Manggahan Floodway (Alliance), Philippines. We posit that the theological process of see-judge-act, enhanced with evaluate-celebrate/ritualise, using feminist biblical characterisation in interpreting Matthew 15:21-28, serves as a spiritual resource for Christians working for the urban poor realisation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The Canaanite woman challenged Jesus’ identity and mission impacting on Christology and ecclesiology. This characterisation makes her …

Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards Jan 2023

Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Abstract

Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that allows for an individual to document ahead of time the medical treatment they want if they are unable to communicate after an unexpected life-threatening situation. The legal forms used to document these wishes are called advance directives (ADs). Since African Americans (AAs) develop chronic disease at younger ages and often experience shorter lifespans than other racial groups, it is imperative that they have a clear understanding of the pros and cons of ACP. Regrettably, because AAs seldom complete ADs, more aggressive, and often, ineffective medical care is provided at the end …

Hybrid zones play notable roles in ecological and evolutionary processes and can be impacted by environmental and anthropogenic factors. Increased anthropogenic disturbance is expected to spatially shift these zones and alter hybridization frequencies in many avian taxa, including the red- and yellow-shafted Northern Flickers. These taxa have low levels of genomic divergence and distinct plumage characteristics that vary between red-shafted, yellow-shafted, and hybrid individuals, allowing hybrids to be effectively scored genetically or morphologically. The Flicker hybrid zone has been extensively studied across the Great Plains from a historical and contemporary perspective, however, urbanization and human influences on Flicker hybridization are …

The Impact Of Trauma On The Learning And Development Of Students Receiving Special Education Services, Mikayla M. Bebeau

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Childhood trauma is known as a health crisis in America. Trauma can be defined in multiple different ways, can be displayed in different behaviors, and can be supported within school if done so appropriately. Within this literature review thesis, trauma is defined in different ways. It also evaluates the different symptoms that students might bring into the classroom as a result of the adverse childhood experience. This literature review evaluates the different ways to support children of trauma, whether they receive general education or special education support through the different recommendations of trauma-informed education and creating supportive environments.

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine the role of multi-sensory learning in the development of elementary-age students. Through the role of day-long classroom observations and educator interviews, firsthand information was gathered related to how this teaching style is presented within the classroom, and how this method is beneficial for students. Through this research and analysis, the enhancement of developmental domains can be seen through different academic disciplines. These interviews and observations also provided insight into resources for educators for the future implementation of this strategy in the classroom.

Growth And Survival Of Amphibians Exposed To Road Salt And Glyphosate-Based Herbicide, Jerica Eaton Jan 2023

Growth And Survival Of Amphibians Exposed To Road Salt And Glyphosate-Based Herbicide, Jerica Eaton

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Amphibian populations are threatened by increasing levels of environmental pollution resulting from human activities. Areas with mixed land use that include agriculture and urban development experience increased contamination from surface herbicide and road deicer application. Upon entering water sources, these chemicals have the capacity to disrupt the natural dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of these contaminants on amphibian populations. I used the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) as a model, rearing larvae from hatching to metamorphosis. I subjected larvae in each of the treatment groups to varying levels of herbicide and salt concentrations. …
