This systematic literature review was conducted to provide insights into how online readers’ comments have been studied in the context of health over a 10-year span. About 593 studies published between 2010 and 2020; of these, 34 met the research criteria for inclusion. Our findings reveal that 60% of the studies focused on the United States, and a qualitative method was used in 74.3% of these studies. About 23.5% of the studies explored vaccine-related issues. Our results reveal that among the selected studies, 76.5% and 20.6% had female and male first authors, respectively. Textual analysis of abstracts shows that the …

No. 57: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity In Urban Ghana During Covid-19, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango, Bernard Owusu, Jonathan Crush
Hungry Cities Partnership
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban households in the Global South has not yet been adequately explored, despite an emerging consensus that impacts of the pandemic were more severe in urban than rural Africa. This paper addresses the knowledge gap by examining the relationship between pandemic precarity and food insecurity in Ghana’s urban areas during the pandemic in 2020. The data comes from the World Bank (WB) and Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) COVID-19 High-Frequency Phone Survey. Using a sub-sample of 1,423 urban households, the paper evaluates household experiences of the pandemic. Our findings show that household demographic characteristics …

Improvement Of Weight Management Counseling In Primary Care, Heather M. Kuriger
Improvement Of Weight Management Counseling In Primary Care, Heather M. Kuriger
DNP Projects
There are cultural, genetic, fiscal, historical, and geographic factors that have contributed to Mississippi having the highest level of obesity in the United States. As the only available source of treatment for obesity for many patients, primary care providers need to feel prepared and effective in treating obesity, and need ways to address obesity that are respectful and person-centered. Motivational interviewing is a counseling process for behavior change that empowers the patient to determine their own goals, motivations, and strategies to establish weight reducing habits. A quality improvement project was developed for primary care providers to educate them on the …
Food Security, Factors Influencing Food Acceptance, And Preferred Food Assistance Delivery Modalities: A Survey Of Students Attending A Medium Sized, Primarily Residential Emerging Research Institution, Amy Caroline Martin
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Food pantries are the most common form of food assistance provided on college campuses. However, there are several barriers that prevent college students from utilizing pantry resources, leading to low campus food pantry utilization and awareness. Barriers, poor pantry utilization, and awareness have been well documented. However, there is little information currently available regarding factors that facilitate college students’ acceptance of food assistance, and the food distribution modalities that food insecure college students prefer. The purpose of this study was to determine these factors and preferences so they may be used to improve food assistance programs on college campuses. To investigate …
Can An Instrument Be Developed To Evaluate Trauma Intervention Programs?, Julie D. Hancock
Can An Instrument Be Developed To Evaluate Trauma Intervention Programs?, Julie D. Hancock
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trauma experiences impact countless individuals every day. Trauma neither favors nor discriminates against any segment of the population; it is an equal opportunity pillager, often striking with no warning. No one is immune to trauma experience and effects, but one population is especially vulnerable to the aftereffects of trauma: the adolescent population. At a stage of life comprised of rapid physical changes and brain growth, the effects of trauma can have overwhelming consequences. However, even with increased vulnerability, this population is often overlooked in the selection of trauma intervention programs and practices for schools. The purpose of this quantitative study …

Faculty Research 2023
Background: Accelerometers are used to objectively measure movement in free-living individuals. Distinguishing nonwear from sleep and sedentary behavior is important to derive accurate measures of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep. We applied statistical learning approaches to examine their promise in detecting nonwear time and compared the results with commonly used wear time (WT) algorithms. Methods: Fifteen children, aged 4–17, wore an ActiGraph wGT3X- BT monitor on their hip during overnight polysomnography. We applied Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to classify states of nonwear and wear in triaxial acceleration data. Performance of methods was compared with …

Investigating Sources Of Microplastics And Effects Of Plastic Pollution On Biofilm Function In The Huron River, Sadie Baker
Investigating Sources Of Microplastics And Effects Of Plastic Pollution On Biofilm Function In The Huron River, Sadie Baker
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Plastics are a global environmental threat due to mass production and the many unknowns regarding the long-term effects of plastic pollution in the environment. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, and they have become ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems. MPs enter aquatic ecosystems through non-point sources such as urbanization, runoff, or atmospheric fallout or through point-sources such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To determine MP sources in the Huron River, we evaluated MP load (MPs/day) upstream and downstream from urban centers (Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti) and the Ann Arbor WWTP. The average MP load among sample …

Nearly half of newborns in the United States are enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Promoting breastfeeding is a programmatic priority, although formula vouchers are provided for those who do not exclusively breastfeed. Previous literature suggests that participant perception of WIC’s breastfeeding recommendations is a significant factor predicting breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity outcomes. However, little is known about how participants’ perceptions of WIC’s breastfeeding recommendations are formed. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a qualitative pilot study in Nevada, interviewing 10 postpartum WIC mothers and 12 WIC staff who had interacted …

Three Essays On The U.S. Beef Supply Chain: Production, Marketing, And Price Dynamics, Erdal Erol
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This dissertation contains three essays on select economic components of the U.S. beef industry. The first and second essays concentrate on the different economic problems in beef cattle production. The third essay evaluates the price dynamics and the impact of COVID-19 along the beef supply chain.
The first essay explores the economics of culling decisions in cow-calf operations in the U.S. with a novel application of a dynamic mathematical programming model. The results provide an optimal culling strategy under the base model and a range of optimal strategies that vary with respect to different components such as fertility probabilities, market …
Community Supported Agriculture Values: A Comparison Across Groups, Thomas B. Pierce
Community Supported Agriculture Values: A Comparison Across Groups, Thomas B. Pierce
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs offer consumers the chance to share the risk with farming operations while gaining access to fresh, local foods. While research on CSA shareholder values such as share affordability or the local impact of participation has been conducted in the past decade and beyond, less attention has been paid to direct value-mapping of the shareholders themselves. This research seeks to determine consumer values around the CSA purchasing decision using the Best-Worst Scaling Approach. Based on a focus group discussion with CSA shareholders in a university wellness voucher program, we used affinity diagramming to develop a list …
Heated High Flow Oxygen Therapy Management Of Respiratory, Swallowing/Dysphagia And Nutrition Needs, Jenelle Overgaard
Heated High Flow Oxygen Therapy Management Of Respiratory, Swallowing/Dysphagia And Nutrition Needs, Jenelle Overgaard
Nursing Posters
Problem
- Patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pose challenges for oxygenation. Often requiring heated high flow oxygen therapy (HHFOT) for days to weeks, with literflow commonly over 40 L/min with maximum of 60 L/min.
- There is minimal research on aspiration risk at higher literflow, therefore practice included decreasing liter flow to 20 L/min for oral intake was standard.
- During oral intake, with literflow decreased to 20 L/min, patients' oxygen saturations would quickly trend down.
- Alarms indicating low saturation would create anxiety, cause patients to eat faster potentially increasing risk for aspiration.
Solution
- For adult inpatients meeting criteria, increase maximum literflow allowed during …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis is an autosomal dominant disease of skeletal muscle in which patients experience episodes of weakness. There is currently no highly effective therapy. A mouse model has been created to study the disease to better understand the physiological changes leading to weakness and to develop novel treatments. However, the work done with the mouse model has used ever-changing protocols and the data produced have been insufficient to answer key questions and bring treatments closer to clinical trials. I evaluated factors of temperature, insulin, potassium concentrations, and length of protocol or exercise, to develop a protocol that reproducibly triggers …

Sheep Ingestive Behavior And Tannin Selection In Pampa Grassland And Feedlot, Marina Terra Braga
Sheep Ingestive Behavior And Tannin Selection In Pampa Grassland And Feedlot, Marina Terra Braga
Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah
The Pampa grassland biome has high plant biodiversity, some with significant secondary compound concentrations such as tannins. Tannin inclusion in ruminant diets may improve meat quality and productivity. However, voluntary intake of this phenolic compound can be a challenge. This dissertation includes three studies within this context. The first study documented whether sheep consume tannin-rich Desmodium incanum (DI), the most common Pampa herbaceous legume species. The second study evaluated how forage tannin and protein concentration influenced sheep feedlot feed selection and the diet affects performance parameters. The third study evaluated sheep feeding behavior in a Pampa native pasture, and how …
