A Job Guarantee Proposal For Chile, Julius Duran Norasco Ms
A Job Guarantee Proposal For Chile, Julius Duran Norasco Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The Chilean development model have not been able to generate employment for the most impoverished groups. Moreover, Chile is vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, this thesis examines through a heterodox economic lens a Job Guarantee Program for Chile can serve as alternative to promote social inclusion and sustainable development. Using input-output model, the Job Guarantee Program has higher employment creation potential. It can generate 196 jobs per billion pesos, of which 185 are direct jobs and 11 are indirect jobs. There is no economic sector (e.g., construction, services, mining, etc.) with that potential for job creation. Large work programs are …

Exogenous Application Of Trehalose Minimizes Cadmium Toxicity And Alleviates Oxidative Stress In Wheat Under Cadmium Stress, Hesham F. Alharby, Hassan S. Al-Zahrani, Khalid Rehman Hakeem, Shafaqat Ali
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Practical and cost-effective food safety and production methods are essential, as huge areas of arable land are contaminated through heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd) pollution worldwide. This study was performed to assess impacts of dissimilar doses of trehalose (Tre) (0, 25, 50 mM) as foliar spray on wheat plants grown under different Cd stress levels (0, 2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg), considering different growth, photosynthetic attributes and antioxidative defense mechanism in relation with the uptake of Cd to different plant parts. A considerable reduction was detected in growth, biomass, and chlorophyll contents under Cd stress linked with boosted lipid peroxidation, electrolyte …
Study Of Potential Synergistic Effect Of Probiotic Formulas In Reduction Acrylamide, Siu Mei, Emily Choi
Study Of Potential Synergistic Effect Of Probiotic Formulas In Reduction Acrylamide, Siu Mei, Emily Choi
Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)
In this research, the potential synergistic effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) formulas in reducing acrylamide (AA) was studied. Five LAB strains were tested to examine its AA reducing capacity in AA standard chemical solutions with different concentrations. It was found that single strain of Lactobacillus plantarum had the most significant effect of AA reduction under 108 CFU/mL cell concentration. The synergistic effect of LAB formulas was then studied in AA chemical solution which demonstrated some LAB formulas had a synergistic effect to reduce AA. Based on the results, the combination of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus bulgaricus showed higher AA …

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate (RR), and resting heart rate (RHR) are common variables measured by wrist-worn activity trackers to monitor health, fitness, and recovery in athletes. Variations in RR are observed in lower-respiratory infections, and preliminary data suggest changes in HRV and RR are linked to early detection of COVID-19 infection in nonathletes.
Hypothesis: Wearable technology measuring HRV, RR, RHR, and recovery will be successful for early detection of COVID-19 in NCAA Division I female athletes.
Study Design: Cohort study.
Level of Evidence: Level 2.
Methods: Female athletes wore WHOOP, Inc. bands …

The Relationship Of Developmental Stages In Adults In Psychotherapy To Different Types Of Mental Health Symptoms, Shannon E. Gasparro
The Relationship Of Developmental Stages In Adults In Psychotherapy To Different Types Of Mental Health Symptoms, Shannon E. Gasparro
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we examine the pattern of mental health symptoms across adult development using data from a community-based clinic in Queens, NY. Age was represented by three qualitative stages, “early adulthood,” “middle adulthood,” and “late adulthood.” Early adulthood has been characterized as a period of heightened emotional instability, with less clear long-term commitments to romantic relationships, career paths, work, and living arrangements. Middle adulthood has been characterized as a more emotionally stable period in terms of relations with friends and family and social roles. Finally, late adults, although also viewed as more emotionally regulated, may again experience greater interpersonal …

Molecular Organic Photovoltaic Cells And Applications, Julie Liu
Theses and Dissertations
The absorption, light scattering, and anti-Stoke’s fluorescence of chlorophyll and closely related sodium copper chlorophyllin were examined in various solutions with a wide range of refractive index and permittivity. It was evident that radiative photo electron decay corresponded to low permittivity solvents, but not to solvent refractive index. Additionally, non-radiative decay was dominant in high permittivity solvents. The properties suggest evolution has provided plants with an ability to redirect light to the chlorophyll in the high permittivity (water) photosynthesis center. Exploratory solar cells exploiting lifetime switching were developed and tested, wherein strong photovoltaic response was exhibited, along with the unique …

The ‘Natural’ Disaster: How Americans’ Obsession With ‘Natural’ Foods Encourages Misinformation, Stifles Innovation, And Harms The Planet, Jillian Guernsey
UC Law Environmental Journal
Every day, consumers are bombarded with conflicting messages about what they should and should not eat. In an effort to make healthy food choices, consumers often flock to food products that boast “organic,” “all-natural,” or “non-GMO” labels. But are all of these foods really better? In this note, I discuss the confusion surrounding “natural” food and how it has hindered progress toward more productive and sustainable food systems. First, I examine the hazy definition of “natural” foods and explain why consumers continue to demand natural foods despite their environmental impacts. Second, I discuss how consumers’ single-minded focus on natural foods …

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Objective: We completed a study to determine how food insecurity, access to exercise opportunities, and county classification (rural or urban) impacted obesity rates in Ohio. We hypothesized that the county classification impacted obesity the most followed by food insecurity and access to exercise opportunities.
Methods: We obtained data on food insecurity, access to exercise opportunities, and obesity from County Health Rankings and county classification data from the United States Department of Agriculture Census. We analyzed correlations between obesity and food insecurity and obesity and access to exercise opportunities in both county types. We also analyzed changes in obesity rates in …

Background/aim: Diabetes is a multifactorial and growing disease, one of the severe complications of which is diabetic nephropathy (DN), which is the most common cause of chronic renal failure. FERM domain containing 3 (FRMD3) is responsible for maintaining the shape and integrity of nephron cells, and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) helps maintain function and reduce kidney damage. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of crocin and losartan on biochemical parameters and the expression of FRMD3 and BMP7 genes in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five experimental groups as …
