Cell inflammation disrupts intestinal barrier functions and may cause disorders related to a leaky gut, possibly leading to diabetes. The objective of this study was to determine if carao (Cassia grandis) incorporated into yogurt enhances in vitro intestinal barrier function. To achieve this goal, Caco-2 cells were used as a model of intestinal barrier permeability. Caco-2 cells were treated with cytokines (interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)) and yogurt with carao yogurt (CY) at different doses (1.3 g/L, 2.65 g/L, and 5.3 g/L). Real-time quantitative polymerase chain and immunofluorescence microscopy were applied to evaluate the expression and localization …

Adoption of unrelated young by adult birds is costly and therefore they should avoid it unless adoption carries compensating benefits. Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) have a monogamous mating system with low rates of extra-pair paternity and biparental care of young. To date, no documented instances of adoption have been published in this species. In two small nesting populations in South Carolina, we documented six cases in three years in which an unpaired Loggerhead Shrike adopted a brood of apparently unrelated nestlings or fledglings, in some cases sharing provisioning duties with the brood’s mother and in two cases taking over care …

“Every life is different from any that has gone before it, and so is every death.”1 Although advancements in technology and healthcare have saved and prolonged countless lives, there is one part of humanity that can never be fully cured: death. Death is not what it used to be—it is no longer normally a common, family communal, or even religious event.2 Modern dying takes place in a hospital while attached to machines that attempt to prolong life but seem to simultaneously take patients further and further away from dying with dignity. As these technologies that prolong life evolve, so do …

Gluten-free bread is an important product that is under development using different sources, such as rice and starchy plants. Teosinte seeds are utilized by ethnic groups in Honduras to produce gluten-free flour to prepare traditional baked goods and beverages. The quality of gluten-free products could vary depending on flour properties, such as amylose content, particle size, and water absorption capacity. A good strategy for developing baked goods is to mix different cereal grain sources to optimize their physicochemical properties. As a result, the current study aimed to develop bread from novel flours including teosinte (TF), high-protein brown rice (BRF), and …

Integration Of Environmental Sustainability And Decision Making: Case Studies Of Civil Infrastructure, Sussan Moussavi
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sustainable development is important in the planning and design of critical civil infrastructure systems. However, decision making related to these systems currently lacks meaningful sustainability considerations. To fill this gap, this research explores the life cycle impacts of wastewater and energy infrastructure using case studies, life cycle assessment methodologies, and stakeholder discussions. Environmental and economic impacts, which are more commonly quantified, as well as more difficult to quantify societal factors, are explored. The goal of this research is to help inform decision making and facilitate the consideration of the three pillars of sustainability (e.g., economic, environmental, and social) during the …

Development Of A Visuoperceptual Measure For Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation Of Swallowing (V-Fees) In Adults With Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: An International Delphi Study, Reinie Cordier, Renée Speyer, Susan Langmore, Deborah Denman, Katina Swan, Daniele Farneti
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Visuoperceptual evaluation of fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a commonly used assessment in dysphagia or swallowing disorders. Currently, no international consensus exists regarding which visuoperceptual measures to use for the analysis of FEES recordings. Moreover, existing visuoperceptual FEES measures are limited by poor and incomplete psychometric data, identifying an urgent need for developing a visuoperceptual measure to interpret FEES recordings. Following the COSMIN group’s (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) psychometric taxonomy and guidelines, this study aimed to establish the content validity of a new visuoperceptual FEES (V-FEES) measure in adults with oropharyngeal dysphagia. Using …

In the recent past, the Horn of Africa witnessed an upsurge in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) invasion. This has raised major concerns over the massive food insecurity, socioeconomic impacts, and livelihood losses caused by these recurring invasions. This study determined the potential vegetation damage due to desert locusts (DLs) and predicted the suitable habitat at high risk of invasion by the DLs using current and future climate change scenarios in Kenya. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for the period 2018–2020 was computed using multi-date Sentinel-2 imagery in the Google Earth Engine platform. This was performed to assess the …

Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and …

The establishment of agrarian economy in Eneolithic East Europe is associated with the Pre-Cucuteni-Cucuteni-Trypillia complex (PCCTC). PCCTC farmers interacted with Eneolithic forager-pastoralist groups of the North Pontic steppe as PCCTC extended from the Carpathian foothills to the Dnipro Valley beginning in the late 5th millennium BCE. While the cultural interaction between the two groups is evident through the Cucuteni C pottery style that carries steppe influence, the extent of biological interactions between Trypillian farmers and the steppe remains unclear. Here we report the analysis of artefacts from the late 5th millennium Trypillian settlement at the Kolomiytsiv Yar Tract (KYT) archaeological …

How much is thirty dollars per month worth to the average American? For many, it is not much—it can be the cost of a streaming subscription or a ticket to a baseball game. For others, however, thirty dollars is the cost of freedom from incarceration. In January 2019, Randall Graves failed to meet the conditions of his probation, which required that he pay a monthly intervention fee of thirty dollars to the Department of Corrections instead of serving his six-year prison sentence. To some, thirty dollars may not be worth much, but to Graves, it was a metric of freedom.

Who condones time’s ability to place such an incessant stranglehold on one’s emotions? Well, no one, but it is inevitable: time dictates every facet of life. For example, a brief glance at the clock elicits a myriad of potential responses. One possibility is anticipation: painstakingly watching the clock count down the hours, minutes, and seconds until the weekend. The feeling is excruciating. However, the instant the minute hand aligns with that pesky 12 provides an instantaneous, captivating sense of relief. There is no feeling like 5 PM. Conversely, no amount of begging or pleading with Father Time can change the …

However, long-term glucose monitoring and insulin therapy are often required, which can adversely affect the quality of life. We sought to evaluate diabetes-related quality of life (DR-QOL) in youth who underwent TPIAT and compare it to the youth with new-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ 3.2 Diabetes Module (PedsQL™ DM) was used to assess DR-QOL in 46 youth (< 20 years old) who underwent TPIAT. The PedsQL™ DM scores were analyzed for statistically significant changes and minimally important clinical differences (MCID) over time post-TPIAT. Scores at 12 months (n = 52) and 24 months (n = 58) after diagnosis of T1D. The diabetes …

Addressing exposure to criminal defendants as a public health issue is crucial to achieving health equity. The presence of criminal defendants has been linked to adverse health behaviors or outcomes that might be associated with anxiety, depression, and negative coping mechanisms. However, crime as a social variable has been understudied. This study therefore seeks to find the association between crime-related stressors and adverse health effects within Kalamazoo County (a mid-sized county with a population of about 250,000) between 2012 and 2016. The methods employed include geocoding of defendant addresses and mapping of defendant rates aggregated at the tract level using …

INTRODUCTION: Delivery via caesarean section (C-section) has been associated with an increased risk of childhood chronic diseases such as obesity and asthma, which may be due to underlying systemic inflammation. However, the impact of specific C-section types may be differential, as emergency C-sections typically involve partial labor and/or membrane rupture. Our objectives were to determine if mode of delivery associates with longitudinal profiles of high sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) -a marker of systemic inflammation-from birth through preadolescence, and to examine if CRP mediates the association between mode of delivery and preadolescent body mass index (BMI).

Consumer-Facing Competition Remedies: Lessons From Consumer Law For Competition Law, Lauren E. Willis
Utah Law Review
Assigning consumers the task of disciplining markets is frequently attempted but rarely achieved. We teach financial literacy classes with the hope that consumers will avoid overly-risky and overly-costly financial products. We require calorie labels with the hope that consumers will use them to reduce obesity. We pre-select a no-overdraft default with the hope that consumers will stick with the default and avoid overdraft fees. None of these approaches are terribly effective at achieving the ends sought because, in each instance, the intervention—the classes, the disclosures, or the defaults—produce unexpected heterogeneous consumer responses and are met with a barrage of firm …
