IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Native grasslands (NG) are the main feed supply of dual-purpose (DP) cows of the Mexican humid tropics. NG comprise about 85% of Paspalum, Axonopus and Cynodon species, about 5% of native legumes, mainly of Desmodium, and the remaining 10% are narrow and broad leafed weeds. Arachis pintoi (AP) is a persistent grazing tolerant tropical legume. In association with sown grasses, it has improved dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive quality of forage, and milk yield up to 9 kg/cow/day (González et al., 1996). The objective was to determine if productive performance of DP cows could be improved by …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In Japan the production of rice has been controlled since the 1970's and some parts of the paddy fields have been laid off for forage production. However, in poorly-drained fields or fields with high ground water table, forage species with high tolerance of wet conditions are required. The tropical forage legumes Aeschynomene americana cv. Glenn (Glenn) and Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb. cv. Murray (phasey bean) have a high wet endurance (Bishop et al., 1985; Tobisa et al., 1999) and show high dry matter productivity (Skerman et al., 1988; Tobisa et al., 1999). The objective of this …

Desmanthus: A New Forage Legume To Improve Wool Growth In Tropical Australia, J. H. De A. Rangel, Carlos A. M. Gomide
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In tropical Australia, very short and erratic wet seasons are the critical factors in determining forage growth and animal production (Wheeler & Freer, 1986). Grasses are highly susceptible to low rainfall and animal production in such conditions become strictly seasonal. Improvements in meat and wool production by the introduction of stylo species (Stylosanthes sp.) into natural grasslands have been intensively reported (Gillard & Winter, 1984). However, there are currently no suitable introduced legumes for the c.28 million ha of Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.) plains in heavy clay soils of western North Queensland, grazed predominately by wool producing Merino …

Recent Advances In Stylosanthes Research In Tropical America, Bela Grof, Celso D. Fernandes, Jaqueline R. Verzignassi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The potential of neotropical savannas is very large for pasture-based livestock systems. There are 250 million ha of well-drained lowland savannas in the American tropics. Over 200 million ha are situated in the Cerrados region of Brazil. The Cerrados support 42% of the national herd. Although these ranges support large populations of livestock, productivity is generally low. Poor nutritive value of native pastures and monospecific swards of Brachiaria spp. is the principal cause of this low productivity, especially in the dry season when these grasslands often provide no more than 60% of the animal's maintenance requirements. The best option to …

Desmodium Velutinum: A High-Quality Shrub Legume For Acid Soils In The Tropics, R. Schultze-Kraft, M. Peters, N. Vivas, F. Parra, L. H. Franco
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Drought tolerant legume shrubs can enhance the sustainability of smallholder production systems in the tropics through the provision, year-round, of high-quality feed and through their positive effect on soil. Desmodium velutinum (Willd.) DC. is one of the few shrub species that have been identified as (1) well adapted to acid tropical soils and (2) of good nutritive value (Schultze-Kraft, 1996). It is a perennial native to SE Asia and tropical Africa growing up to 3 m high, the velutinous (velvety) surfaces of its 1-foliolate leaves being a characteristic feature. It grows well on soils ranging from pH 4.0 to alkaline, …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grasses and tree leaves/shrubs are the major feeds available from grasslands and grazing fields. There is though a dearth of information on the nutritional value of tree foliage although available information was collated by Shelton et al. (1995). This study evaluated the relative nutritive value of two foliages for goats.

Ensiling Characteristics And Nutritive Value Of Browse/Maize Forage Mixtures, F. B. Bareeba, H. Kato, Elly N. Sabiiti
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The practice of growing fodder tree and shrubs is being advocated for and adopted in smallholder dairy production systems. In Uganda, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gliricidia sepium, and Leucaena leucocephala have been identified and recommended as the most suitable species (Sabiiti, 2001). However tree foliage contains toxic compounds (Lowry, 1990), which may be alleviated by ensiling. The objective of the experiment was to study the ensiling characteristics of browse/ maize forage mixtures and their nutritive value when fed to lactating dairy cows.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Ensiling as a means of storing green fodder by acidification has a profound effect on the chemical composition of the resultant silage. Ensiling could therefore, ameliorate the effects of anti-nutritional factors associated with browses. The objective of the experiment was to determine fermentation characteristics and rumen degradation (D) of ensiled Calliandra calothyrsus (C), Gliricidia sepium (G), Leucaena leucocephala (L) and maize forage.

The Effects Of Exposure To Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed On Faecal And Urine Concentrations Of Ergovaline And Lysergic Acid In Mature Gelding Horses, C. L. Schultz, S. L. Lodge-Ivey, A. M. Craig, James R. Strickland, L. P. Bush
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Despite the good nutritive value of endophyte-infected tall fescue, consumption by livestock results in a decrease in both reproductive and growth performance due to ergot alkaloids produced by an endophytic fungus (Cross et al., 1995). Little research has investigated the metabolic fate of ergot alkaloids and/or their metabolites in grazing horses. Thus, the objectives of this experiment were: a) to determine concentrations of ergovaline (EV) and lysergic acid (LA) in the faeces and urine of geldings exposed to tall fescue seed over a time course experiment and b) to measure the effects of alkaloid-containing tall fescue on nutrient digestibility …

Stylos: The Broad Acre Legumes Of N Australian Grazing Systems, John P. Rains
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Early accidental introduction of Stylosanthes humilis into the N Australian savannas in the early 20th century and its contrived spread by the late 1960s led to the release of more perennial types. Townsville Stylo, as it was known, colonised large areas and had reached its climatic and agronomic limits by the 1970s. It had a major impact on beef production in areas where natural carrying capacities were relatively low. The precedent of Townsville Stylo directed attention to the genus Stylosanthes. This impact continued until 1974 when anthracnose virtually wiped it out. Fortunately 2 other Stylosanthes species, S. hamata cv. Verano …

Leucaena In Northern Australia: A Forage Tree Legume Success Story, B. F. Mullen, H. M. Shelton, Scott A. Dalzell
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Leucaena leucocephala (leucaena) is a long-lived, perennial forage tree legume of very high nutritive value for ruminant production. In northern Australia, leucaena is direct seeded into hedgerows 5-10m apart, with grass species such as buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) planted in the inter-row to form a highly productive and sustainable grass-legume pasture that cattle graze directly. It generally is grown on deep, fertile soils in sub-humid environments with average rainfall of 600-800mm/year. Steer gains of 275-300kg/head per year are achieved, with short-term daily gains over the main growing season > 1kg/head. Being very deep-rooted, leucaena exploits moisture beyond the reach …

Aeschynomene And Carpon Desmodium: Legumes For Bahiagrass Pasture In Florida, Lynn E. Sollenberger, R. S. Kalmbacher
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soils and climate are very diverse across Florida, and no single legume has state-wide adaptation. However, aeschynomene (Aeschynomene americana), an annual, and carpon desmodium (Desmodium heterocarpon) cv. Florida, a perennial, are the most commonly used legumes for grazing on the central and southern peninsula, which produces 65% of Florida's beef calves. Both grow well with bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), which is the main pasture grass, with ~1M ha state-wide. Circa 65K ha of bahiagrass contain at least limited quantities of aeschynomene and 14K ha contain carpon desmodium.

Rhizoma Peanut: More Than A ‘Lucerne’ For Subtropical Usa, M. J. Williams, K. H. Quesenberry, G. M. Prine, C. B. Olson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata) was introduced to Florida from South America in the 1930s. Selections 'Arb' (PI 118457) and 'Arblick' (PI 262839) were released in the 1960s, but their use was very limited due to slow establishment and low productivity. The University of Florida released 'Florigraze' (PI 421707) in 1978 and 'Arbrook' (PI 262817) in 1986. These cultivars produced much higher dry matter yields. Thereafter, rhizoma peanut began to gain commercial acceptance. These cultivars are used throughout the Gulf Coast region of the USA for commercial hay production, pasture, creep grazing, silage, balage, and living mulch (French et …

Indonesia’S Women; Diversity And Dynamics, Anke Niehof
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The study of Indonesian women inevitably involves methodological questions, a prime one being whether Indonesian women as a category form a meaningful object of study. In edited volumes on Indonesian women, the contributions usually form a mosaic of different kinds of Indonesian women, defined by variables such as ethnicity, class, residence, or historical time. This raises questions about diversity and difference and the applicability of specific findings to Indonesian women in general. Taking as a point of departure that it is useful to treat Indonesian women’s studies as one field of study, I explore these issues in relation to women’s …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Three-dimensional strategies involving the application of parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to the kinetic UV absorbance measurements were elaborated to monitor the oxidation of quercetin with oxidant agents (K2Cr2O7 and KIO3) and to quantify analyte in a dietary supplement product. Loadings (spectral, kinetic and concentration profiles) were obtained by the PARAFAC deconvolution. Spectral identification, kinetics and quantification of the relevant analyte in the presence of interferent(s) were performed. The elaborated chemometric strategies were carefully validated to demonstrate the capability of the method. Assay results of the PARAFAC strategies were statistically compared to that of …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Pulmonary injury is defined as a progressive inflammation. Extensive pro-inflammatory cytokines are secreted from alveolus, associated with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis. The model of endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated lung cells has been applied to mimic the pulmonary injury. Some antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds can be used as chemopreventive agents of pulmonary injury. Quercetin-3-glucuronide (Q3G) has been showed to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-aging and anti-hypertension effects. The aim of the study is to examine the inhibitory potential of Q3G on pulmonary injury and inflammation in vitro and in vivo. Firstly, human lung fibroblasts MRC-5 cells pre-treated …

Rothman Institute Papers
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a rare yet devastating complication following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Early and accurate diagnosis of PJI is paramount in order to maximize the chances of successful treatment. However, we are yet to identify a single “gold standard” test for the diagnosis of PJI. As a result, the diagnosis of PJI is often challenging. Currently, the 2018 ICM definition of PJI is the only validated diagnostic criteria available. This article will review the importance of serum and synovial biomarkers in the diagnosis of PJI. In addition, it will provide a brief overview of the emerging modalities …

Dying In Prison: End-Of-Life Care Services In A State Correctional Facility, Brook Cooley Webb, Mollee K. Steely Smith, Tusty Ten Bensel
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
The aging inmate population in American prisons has noticeably increased, contributing to a more significant number of offenders who will die in prison, thus forcing correctional facilities to aid in caring for prisoners at the end of life. Two common responses have emerged to deliver adequate healthcare to inmates, including hospice programs and End-of-Life (EOL) care services. This study aimed to explore the nature of EOL care in a state prison by interviewing correctional administrators, correctional officers, and relevant medical personnel (N=17). The current study provided insight into the inclusion criteria for inmates who utilized EOL care in the prison …

Executive Summary
The report synthesizes thoughtful recommendations of the authors to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) about routine data collection of SOGI† (sex, sexual orientation, and gender) demographic data in minors for clinical and reporting purposes. We see five primary motivations to routinely collect SOGI data, including to:
- create an inclusive practice in order to welcome and make space for people from historically excluded genders, sexes, and sexual orientations,
- promote health equity between minority and majority SOGI identities,
- direct group-specific services towards those who need them,
- represent the actual diversity of Oregon, and its communities, and
- shift normative expectations about …

Proper wound closure requires the functional coordination of endothelial cells (ECs) and keratinocytes. In the late stages of wound healing, keratinocytes become activated and ECs promote the maturation of nascent blood vessels. In diabetes mellitus, decreased keratinocyte activation and impaired angiogenic action of ECs delay wound healing. Porcine urinary bladder matrix (UBM) improves the rate of wound healing, but the effect of exposure to UBM under diabetic conditions remains unclear. We hypothesized that keratinocytes and ECs isolated from both diabetic and non-diabetic donors would exhibit a similar transcriptome representative of the later stages of wound healing following incubation with UBM. …

Metaproteomics Profiling Of Gut Microbiota In Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Patients, Shahd Ezz El Din
Theses and Dissertations
The gut microbiota is the collection of microorganisms that harbor the human gastrointestinal tract. The relation of microbiota and cancer is an emerging field as several studies have linked the gut microbiota to cancer. Such findings opened the door towards a new era of studies aiming to reveal the role of the microbiota in cancer initiation and progression. Although several metagenomic studies have provided insights into the gut microbial composition in health and diseased state, the microbial functional characteristics is still poorly understood. With current advances in mass spectrometry, comprehensive understanding of microbiota proteome became possible. In this vein, the …

Growing Brine Shrimp (Artemia) In Desalination Brine Water, Khaled Madkour
Theses and Dissertations
Water scarcity is one of the main issues in the recent and coming decades that resulted from the growing population, increasing agricultural lands, and other current challenges. This problem led to finding alternatives to provide fresh water for domestic usage. Desalination is one of these solutions, especially in the MENA region, which has more than half of the desalination plants in the world. The desalination process has two main outputs: freshwater and highly concentrated saline water (brine water). The brine water discharge can be done in various approaches, including deep-well injection, surface water disposal, land application, effluent disposal, and evaporation …
