Food Product Packaging Adapted For Visually Impaired And Elderly People, Marina Plečko, Maja Brozović, Dorotea Kovačević

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Most of food product packaging is unsuitable for elderly and visually impaired people. Food information, such as ingredients, nutritional values, allergens and date of use are printed in small letter size and illegible. Due to reduced motor skills, visually impaired people often have problems with handling packaging, i.e. opening and closing products. In this paper, we propose a redesign of the packaging of food products in order to make it easier to use (ergonomically adapted) and to make the typography, color and contrast, more noticeable (visually adapted). For the purposes of this study, we conducted a survey on elderly and …

An Examination Of Race Strategies In Ncaa Cross Country Championship Events, Peter S. Finley, Jeffrey J. Fountain

HCBE Faculty Articles

This research sought to evaluate race strategies in Cross Country running to determine whether a fast, predicted, or slow start would yield the best results when coupled with an advancing or regressing strategy from the 1st checkpoint through to the finish. Twelve National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship races were analyzed from 2021 to 2022 (N=315 teams; 2,205 runners). Success was defined by each team's finish relative to their anticipated finish, as determined through pre-championship national rankings. Results indicated that starting well ahead of a predicted finishing place and advancing throughout the race can yield finishes well ahead of a …

Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch Jun 2023

Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch

Theses and Dissertations

Tilapia is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed fish globally. In terms of human health, tilapia is an excellent source of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and micronutrients. Tilapia and other aquatic species have become increasingly susceptible to contamination, as anthropogenic activities have been increasing around the world. Anthropogenetic activities often introduce high levels of contaminants, including heavy metals, into the marine environment. These contaminants often do not biodegrade, and they are absorbed by aquatic species. Contaminants can bioaccumulate and proceed in biomagnification up the fish food chain putting consumers at an increased risk of exposure. Heavy metals can …

Effect Of Vacuum Packaging On Fish Products, Titi Rachmawati, Eka Andriani

Bulletin of Culinary Art and Hospitality

Fish is one of the foodstuffs containing nutrients, especially protein, needed for the human body. In addition to protein, the nutrients contained in fish also vary. As a food source rich in nutritional content that can be easily found and obtained in Indonesia, many people have started making products or processed food from freshwater fish. Therefore, the quality of fish products, both in the form of direct products and processed products, must be maintained. Meanwhile, packaging factors can affect the growth of microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. One of the packaging types is vacuum packaging. Vacuum packaging is one …

The cystine transporter solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11; also called xCT) protects cancer cells from oxidative stress and is overexpressed in many cancers. Here we report a surprising finding that, whereas moderate overexpression of SLC7A11 is beneficial for cancer cells treated with H2O2, a common oxidative stress inducer, its high overexpression dramatically increases H2O2-induced cell death. Mechanistically, high cystine uptake in cancer cells with high overexpression of SLC7A11 in combination with H2O2 treatment results in toxic buildup of intracellular cystine and other disulfide molecules, NADPH depletion, redox system collapse, and rapid cell death (likely disulfidptosis). We further show …

Mating Burrows In The Fiddler Crab Leptuca Pugilator: How A Key Resource Is Contested, Constructed, And Shared, Zachary Michael Lane Jun 2023

Mating Burrows In The Fiddler Crab Leptuca Pugilator: How A Key Resource Is Contested, Constructed, And Shared, Zachary Michael Lane

Dissertations

The Atlantic sand fiddler crab, Leptuca pugilator, is found on sandy, vegetated beach across a large portion of the United States’ Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts and is iconic in regions where dense populations of the species occur for its charismatic courtship, competitive, and foraging behaviors. The social dynamics of the species are complex. Reproductively active males maintain mating territories in the dangerous heat of the intertidal zone, away from their food source at the water’s edge, where they inhabit specialized mating burrows. These mating burrows are essential to successful female reproductive success, and when it is time …

Development And Characterization Of The Cellular Circadian Clock Of C2c12 Cells, Ali Akbari Beni Jun 2023

Development And Characterization Of The Cellular Circadian Clock Of C2c12 Cells, Ali Akbari Beni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract Circadian rhythms in mammalian physiology and behavior are generated through coherent rhythmic crosstalk between the central clock in the brain and peripheral clocks throughout the organs in our body. The molecular clocks responsible for these intrinsic rhythmic oscillations work based on interlocked transcription/translation feedback loops, which work together with various environmental and metabolic cues to produce internal 24-hour timing. This project established a stable cellular circadian clock model using the C2C12 cell line. This genetically tractable model contains an integrated luciferase reporter, which enables continuous luminescence recording of each circadian cycle. In order to examine this cellular circadian model, …

Change Management In Education, Betsurmath Cg, Prashanth Sadashiva Murthy

International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences

Social challenges are constantly evolving and organizations need to adapt timely improvisations to stabilize the growth amidst these presenting challenges. The word “social challenges” itself is so varied in its representation, that it circumscribes various “planned” and “forced” challenges and threats that innately has the potential to destabilize the more so stable flow of processes. Educational institutions are expected to steer a variety of domains for a cumulative stable and progressive outcome. When the stakes at hand are so diverse and the challenges so intense, there is no landmark recipe that can be a single solution to all challenging situations …

Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross Jun 2023

Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite significant media attention provided to school-based acts of violence, these tragic incidents are relatively rare across school environments, leading to increasing challenges in identifying students who may pose a threat. Previous approaches to school discipline, including policies such as zero tolerance, resulted in significant racial disparities among students who received disciplinary consequences inconsistent with the severity of their behaviors or threats. Alternatively, a relatively recent approach that emerged following a series of school shootings in the 1990s was school threat assessment, which focuses on prevention rather than prediction. While it is important to determine students who may pose a …
