Deconstructing Orthorexia In An Age Of Healthism And Social Media, Maddison Paul Jan 2023

Deconstructing Orthorexia In An Age Of Healthism And Social Media, Maddison Paul

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Orthorexia, a pathological fixation with healthy eating, has recently emerged as a construct of interest in the field of clinical psychology. Despite its growing recognition, the origin of this construct remains unclear. This dissertation aims to contribute to the understanding of orthorexia by examining its emergence and contextual factors through a constructivist lens. The study found that the cultural, economic, and moralistic landscape of healthism and social medially have played a role in the development of orthorexia. The dominant clinical perspective of orthorexia was also deconstructed, revealing potential biases that may lead to pathologizing the experiences of those who demonstrate …

Foraging habitat selection and diet quality are key factors that influence individual fitness and meta-population dynamics through effects on demographic rates. There is growing evidence that sea turtles exhibit regional differences in somatic growth linked to alternative dispersal patterns during the oceanic life stage. Yet, the role of habitat quality and diet in shaping somatic growth rates is poorly understood. Here, we evaluate whether diet variation is linked to regional growth variation in hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), which grow significantly slower in Texas, United States versus Florida, United States, through novel integrations of skeletal growth, gastrointestinal content (GI), and …

“Avoid It Like The Plague”: Adults' Lived Experience Of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, Megan Knedgen

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of adults with a DSM-5 diagnosis of avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) aiming to describe key features of ARFID as it is understood by treatment-seeking adults. Nine treatment-seeking adults with a full-threshold diagnosis of ARFID (aged 20–42) were recruited. In-depth, semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted to explore participants’ experiences and perceptions of avoidant and/or restrictive eating. Transcripts were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, through which three group experimental themes were generated: (a) “A tradeoff between safety and freedom,” (b) “A broken self,” and (c) “Being seen: A double-edged sword.” This study’s findings …

Eating Change: A Critical Autoethnography Of Community Gardening And Social Identity, Jessica Gerrior Jan 2023

Eating Change: A Critical Autoethnography Of Community Gardening And Social Identity, Jessica Gerrior

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Community gardening efforts often carry a social purpose, such as building climate resilience, alleviating hunger, or promoting food justice. Meanwhile, the identities and motivations of community gardeners reflect both personal stories and broader social narratives. The involvement of universities in community gardening projects introduces an additional dimension of power and privilege that is underexplored in scholarly literature. This research uses critical autoethnography to explore the relationship of community gardening and social identity. Guided by Chang (2008) and Anderson and Glass-Coffin (2013), a systematic, reflexive process of meaning-making was used to compose three autoethnographic accounts. Each autoethnography draws on the author’s …

Finding Body Appreciation Through The Weight-Neutral Framework, Hannah Goehner Jan 2023

Finding Body Appreciation Through The Weight-Neutral Framework, Hannah Goehner

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Body dissatisfaction is a critical risk factor for well-being; however, it can be considered normative in women. Body dissatisfaction is exceptionally high for women in larger bodies (Murnen, 2011). Due to body dissatisfaction’s prevalence and risk, mental health providers must assist higher-weight women in developing body appreciation. This qualitative study aims to comprehend how weight-neutral treatments promote body appreciation among higher-weight women. Utilizing a feminist and positive psychology framework, the study explored how higher-weight women developed body appreciation, how weight-neutral treatment promoted this development, and what outside factors assisted their progression. Comparison analysis between the weight-neutral and weight-focused samples was …

Assessing And Improving Pediatric Nurses' Documentation Of Childhood Immunization Status Using The Electronic Health Record, Katherine Engalichev

Master's Theses and Capstones

BACKGROUND: Adherence to the standardized childhood immunization schedule put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics is the gold standard for decreasing vaccine-preventable disease morbidity. The first step to improving adherence with the recommended immunization schedule is identifying children who are under-immunized. The inpatient setting offers an opportunity to screen pediatric patients for immunization status. A survey was administered to nurses working on an inpatient pediatric unit to gauge nurse self-report of Cerner™ Electronic Health Record (EHR) use for immunization documentation, their perceptions regarding EHR ease of use for documenting pediatric immunization status, attitudes towards documenting immunization status, and perceived …

Registered Nurse Competencies And The Implementation Of Self-Care Interventions Among Surgical Patients With Type Two Diabetes: A Quality Improvement Project, Elizabeth Fossum

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic disease that requires a holistic approach, an in-depth understanding of self-care, education comprehension, and an effective relationship between healthcare professionals and the individual patient (Saeed et al., 2018). Due to a variety of factors such as increased nurse-to-patient ratios, inconsistent education methods, and limited confidence levels among registered nurses, important treatment measures and discussion of one’s T2DM diagnoses are often not addressed. Initiatives to improve education methods and nursing confidence levels will create more effective treatment measures and discharge education. Local Problem: Registered nurses spend minimal time educating patients on the severity of …

Rights-Based Sanctions Procedures, Desiree Leclercq Jan 2023

Rights-Based Sanctions Procedures, Desiree Leclercq

Scholarly Works

Federal agencies are increasingly interpreting international labor rights and imposing a wide array of economic and financial penalties, or “rights-based sanctions,” under various laws and regulations. Congress recently vested the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) with authority to impose targeted rights-based sanctions on foreign factories. USTR has begun administering its new authority with vigor. Policymakers and rights advocates hope that USTR’s enforcement activities will strengthen the protection of workers abroad.

Hidden from view, and thus largely overlooked, are the exclusory procedures that agencies follow when they administer rights-based sanctions. The Treasury Department’s Office of Financial Asset Control …

Artful Deception: The Multilevel Marketing Industry's Use Of Smoke And Mirrors To Hide Their Pyramid-Shaped Truths, Hailey Stauffer-Person Jan 2023

Artful Deception: The Multilevel Marketing Industry's Use Of Smoke And Mirrors To Hide Their Pyramid-Shaped Truths, Hailey Stauffer-Person

Lewis & Clark Law Review

In the United States, the line between financial fraud and legal business opportunity is blurry at best. Multilevel marketing companies have mastered the art of walking in the gray area while avoiding the majority of government regulators. In 2020, the direct sales industry experienced over $40 billion in sales and involved over 7 million Americans as distributors. Countless Americans fall victim to multilevel marketing frauds each year and the U.S. government has done little to protect them from the industry’s inherent manipulation. The recent growth of the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic and the defeat of President Donald Trump has …

Severity Of Post-Traumatic Stress And Non-Medical, Concomitant Opioid And Benzodiazepine Use In A Sample Of Women At High Risk Of Overdose, Catherine Tomko, Kristin E. Schneider, Danielle Friedman Nestadt, Jessica L. Zemlak, Susan G. Sherman Jan 2023

Sherman

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Women who exchange sex and use opioids experience substantial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Among veterans, PTSD increases the risk of concomitant opioid-benzodiazepine use, increasing overdose risk, but this relationship is underexplored in other at-risk populations. We examined correlates of non-medical benzodiazepine use among a cohort of women who exchange sex and use opioids daily (N = 270) in Baltimore, MD. PTSD symptom severity was measured by the full PCL-5 (possible range: 0–80, categorized by tertile as low, medium, high) and four symptom-specific subscales. The prevalence of benzodiazepine use was 27% and the median PCL-5 score was 34. In …

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 645 individuals with CP enrolled in the PROCEED study, of whom 276 had diabetes. We conducted univariable and multivariable regression analyses of potential risk factors for diabetes. Model performance was assessed by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analysis, and accuracy was …

Sex-Specific Associations Between Urinary Bisphenols Concentrations During Pregnancy And Problematic Child Behaviors At Age 2 Years, Sarah Dee Geiger, Salma Musaad, Jennifer Hill, Andréa Aguiar, Susan Schantz Jan 2023

Sex-Specific Associations Between Urinary Bisphenols Concentrations During Pregnancy And Problematic Child Behaviors At Age 2 Years, Sarah Dee Geiger, Salma Musaad, Jennifer Hill, Andréa Aguiar, Susan Schantz

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Effects of prenatal bisphenol A (BPA) exposure on child behavior are mixed with some reports suggesting increased problematic behaviors in girls (e.g., aggression and emotional reactivity) and in boys (i.e., externalizing behaviors), while other reports suggest decreased problematic behaviors in girls. Little is known about the potential impact of pregnancy bisphenol S (BPS) exposure on child behavior. In a prospective cohort study (n=68), five maternal spot urine samples collected across pregnancy were pooled and analyzed for BPA and BPS. Child behavior at 2 years was assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Linear regression models were used to assess associations …

Safety Procedures To Work With West Nile Virus In Biosafety Level 3 Facilities, Freedom M Green, Shannon E Ronca Jan 2023

Safety Procedures To Work With West Nile Virus In Biosafety Level 3 Facilities, Freedom M Green, Shannon E Ronca

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

West Nile virus (WNV) can cause severe and sometimes fatal disease, but we do not have treatments or therapeutics to manage these outcomes. Since its introduction to the USA in 1999, WNV has been handled in a biosafety level 3 laboratory to decrease risk to researchers, requiring strict safety protocols and important considerations with planning experiments. Recent changes in US guidelines suggest that WNV can be handled at a lower biosafety level due to its endemicity in the USA and generally minor symptoms, but some research still requires the use of the agent at biosafety level 3. This chapter will …
