Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Affecting Home Delivery Returns, Michael Bronson, Miguel Figliozzi, Ali Riahi Samani, Sabya Mishra
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
E-commerce and house deliveries have experienced a rapid growth in the last two decades. The return of online shopping products is an undesirable side effect of online shopping that has not been properly studied in the transportation literature. Utilizing binary logit models, this research answers two novel research questions focusing on the online shopping channel: (i) What household characteristics are associated with a higher or lower propensity to return online purchases? and (ii) What type of products contribute to positive return delivery rates? To answer these questions models are developed using data collected from a household online survey of e-commerce …
Crash Landing: The Airline Industry’S Failing Efforts To Remedy Its Sexist And Discriminatory Practices Towards Flight Attendants, Elise Gonzalez
Crash Landing: The Airline Industry’S Failing Efforts To Remedy Its Sexist And Discriminatory Practices Towards Flight Attendants, Elise Gonzalez
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
Since the deregulation of the airline industry, flight attendants have become the friendly faces and hallmark of airline brands across the globe. However, airlines went to unconstitutional heights to ensure that flight attendants looked, behaved, and acted in compliance with conservative and outdated notions about gender and sexuality. Piece by piece, the airline industry’s strict and misogynist policies that regulated female flight attendants’ appearance were declared a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act; however, the sexist policies and attitudes maintain a pervasive and insidious presence in the modern airline industry.
Moreover, the airline industry’s dress and appearance …

The Drone Star State: How A Challenge To Texas Drone Law Became The Latest Battleground Between The First Amendment And The Right To Privacy, Edward W. "Ted" Tooley
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
Texas is unconstitutionally infringing upon the First Amendment in the form of its overly restrictive drone regulations. While the state originally set out to create a robust privacy law providing maximum protection to its citizens, its overbroad statute instead produced the latest constitutional conflict between two of our nation’s oldest and most sacred rights. For almost a decade, Texas drone law stood unchallenged, garnering the state a reputation as arguably the least friendly jurisdiction for drone journalism. These regulations, however, have never been more vulnerable. There is a constitutional challenge unfolding in federal district court that, if successful, will redefine …
Delayed Flights And Delayed Rights: It Is Time For The United States To Follow The European Union’S Lead And Enact More Regulations To Protect Airline Passengers, Hannah Foote
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
Since Congress passed the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, travelers have benefitted from airline deregulation through discounted prices and greater access to air travel, but these benefits have largely been offset by the reality that many airline passengers are unsatisfied with the airline industry’s customer service, or lack thereof. This Comment argues that the United States should follow the European Union’s lead and, in accordance with Regulation EC 261, require airlines to compensate passengers when their flights are delayed or canceled. The concentrated aviation industry has created a market that does not adequately protect airline passengers, and the courts have …
Flying Towards Extinction: The Role Of The Aviation Industry In Perpetuating International Wildlife Trafficking, Isabelle Dominguez
Flying Towards Extinction: The Role Of The Aviation Industry In Perpetuating International Wildlife Trafficking, Isabelle Dominguez
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
In the past sixty years, the world has developed significant concern for burgeoning environmental issues. Starting in the 1960s, governments, industries, and the public have embraced efforts to set standards for public and private actors in areas of environmental concern. Particularly, increased globalization has led to an increase in the trade of wildlife and its products, including endangered species.
Unregulated wildlife trade implicates various issues, such as conservation concerns, the spread of diseases, and even funding for criminal organizations. While sovereign governments work independently and together to combat wildlife trafficking and its effects, current law leaves significant gaps in the …
Rethinking Spectrum Governance After The Faa And Fcc’S Turf War Over 5g, Jace Breedlove
Rethinking Spectrum Governance After The Faa And Fcc’S Turf War Over 5g, Jace Breedlove
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
The rollout of 5G technology promised transformative benefits for consumers and the economy. But a protracted dispute between the FCC and FAA relating to 5G interference with airplane safety equipment prevented a smooth 5G rollout. While the FCC was giving wireless companies the green light to roll out 5G service, the FAA was warning of apocalypse if they did. What resulted was a turf war between the FAA and FCC, revealing a dysfunctional process (or lack thereof) for handling spectrum interference concerns. This Comment argues that the United States’ spectrum management system needs an overhaul to prevent similar agency turf …
The Department Of Transportation’S Failures In Regulating Emotional Support Animals, Jillian Doughty
The Department Of Transportation’S Failures In Regulating Emotional Support Animals, Jillian Doughty
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
In the past decade, the number of emotional support animals being used to treat a wide array of mental and emotional disorders has multiplied exponentially. This increase has been met with mixed reactions in the context of air travel. While some passengers are thrilled to sit next to a dog on their flight, others are frustrated due to the belief passengers with emotional support animals are exploiting a loophole to travel with their pet for free. Regardless of the differing perceptions, emotional support animals are a valid, affordable way to treat mental health illnesses without incurring negative side effects associated …
Houston Security Camera Ordinance: Reasonable Safety Measure Or Orwellian Surveillance, Clint Nuckolls
Houston Security Camera Ordinance: Reasonable Safety Measure Or Orwellian Surveillance, Clint Nuckolls
SMU Science and Technology Law Review
A new ordinance went into effect in Houston, Texas in July 2022, which looks to leverage technology and require certain businesses to install surveillance cameras at their own cost and turn footage over to the police on demand without a warrant. The ordinance specifically requires bars, nightclubs, convenience stores, sexually oriented businesses, and game rooms to install surveillance cameras, with accompanying lighting at all places where customers are permitted, keep the cameras running at all times, even when the business is closed, and store the footage for at least thirty days, all at the expense of the business owners. The …

Marine And Human Environmental Factors Influence Vibrio Parahaemolyticus And Vibrio Vulnificus In Vitro Biofilm Processes On Plastics, Ryan Eric Leighton
Theses and Dissertations
Marine bacteria often exist in biofilms as communities attached to surfaces, like plastic. Growing concerns exist regarding marine plastics acting as potential vectors of pathogenic Vibrio, especially in a changing climate. It has been generalized that Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus often attach to plastic surfaces. Different strains of these Vibrios exist having different growth and biofilm forming properties. This work evaluated how temperature and strain variability affect V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus biofilm formation and characteristics on glass (GL), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). This work also evaluated how human body related factors like temperature, …

The Ripple Effects Of Dobbs On Health Care Beyond Wanted Abortion, Maya Manian
The Ripple Effects Of Dobbs On Health Care Beyond Wanted Abortion, Maya Manian
SMU Law Review
The Supreme Court’s momentous decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn fifty years of precedent on the constitutional right to abortion represents a sea of change, not only in constitutional law, but also in the public health landscape. Although state laws on abortion are still evolving after Dobbs, the decision almost immediately wreaked havoc on the delivery of medical care for both patients seeking abortion care and those not actively seeking to terminate a pregnancy. This Article also argues that focusing the public’s attention on the deleterious consequences of abortion bans for health care beyond wanted abortion …
Pregnancy Risk And Coerced Interventions After Dobbs, Elizabeth Kukura
Pregnancy Risk And Coerced Interventions After Dobbs, Elizabeth Kukura
SMU Law Review
Only nine months after the Supreme Court eliminated the federal constitutional right to abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, fourteen states had banned abortion entirely, and experts estimate the ultimate number of states imposing complete or near-complete restrictions on abortion care will likely rise to twenty-four. Millions of people with the capacity for pregnancy now (or will soon) live in places where getting pregnant means there is no choice other than to carry the pregnancy to term and give birth. One underappreciated, though critically important, impact of Dobbs is the extent to which newly enacted abortion restrictions will …
Using A “Bystander Bounty” To Encourage The Reporting Of Workplace Sexual Harassment, Jessica Fink
Using A “Bystander Bounty” To Encourage The Reporting Of Workplace Sexual Harassment, Jessica Fink
SMU Law Review
Sexual harassment has become a fact of the modern workplace—something that society laments and regrets, but that rarely shocks the conscience when it comes to light. In fact, both the least and most surprising aspect of workplace sexual harassment is the number of individuals who are aware of it occurring. For every Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, and Louis C.K., there have been countless observers who knew about their depravity and who did nothing to stop their behavior. In this way, one obvious approach for reducing harassment at work seems clearly to involve mobilizing these bystanders—encouraging those who witness this misconduct …
Appraisal Discrimination: Five Lessons For Litigators, Heather R. Abraham
Appraisal Discrimination: Five Lessons For Litigators, Heather R. Abraham
SMU Law Review
Appraisal discrimination not only persists, but its influence has actually increased in some housing markets. New studies document how contemporary appraisal methods operate as systemic racism, such as how appraisers select from a narrower set of comparable properties when appraising homes in predominantly Black neighborhoods. Recent events have renewed public attention to appraisal discrimination, from shocking news stories to a new multiagency federal task force. In tandem, a new wave of litigation has emerged. This Article examines litigation as one element of a multifaceted approach to combatting appraisal discrimination. After examining the weaknesses of the regulatory framework governing appraisals, this …
A Review And Look Ahead At Criminalizing Pregnancy In The Name Of State Interest In Fetal Life, Sarah E. Burns, Sarah S. Wheeler
A Review And Look Ahead At Criminalizing Pregnancy In The Name Of State Interest In Fetal Life, Sarah E. Burns, Sarah S. Wheeler
SMU Law Review
Across the United States, and especially in communities that are highly policed and in places hostile to abortion, pregnant people are dying, suffering, being separated from their children and families, and going to jail and prison in purported service of the state interest in fetal life recognized in Roe v. Wade and expanded in Planned Parenthood of Pennsylvania v. Casey. This Article focuses on two common practices that cause these harms: criminalizing pregnant people and denying them medical decision-making authority. While these practices are not new, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is …
Secrecy And Transparency In Substantive Due Process Litigation, Dustin B. Benham
Secrecy And Transparency In Substantive Due Process Litigation, Dustin B. Benham
SMU Law Review
A few years before the recomposed Court rejected abortion rights in Dobbs, it sustained several healthcare providers’ challenge to Louisiana abortion restrictions in June Medical. History will remember that 5–4 decision mostly as one of the last major cases to interpret and apply the Casey framework.
But in the little-noticed background of the June Medical litigation, a significant dispute over sealed court records boiled over. On one side, plaintiff physicians sought anonymity and confidentiality in light of potential threats to their physical safety and patient privacy. On the other side, Louisiana asserted the public’s longstanding right to access court records …
From Liberation To (Re)Criminalization: Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Bodily Autonomy, And The Expansion Of State Rights, Robin S. Maril
From Liberation To (Re)Criminalization: Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Bodily Autonomy, And The Expansion Of State Rights, Robin S. Maril
SMU Law Review
For more than a generation, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the constitutionally protected right to an abortion, and, in turn, the dignity-affirming power of reproductive autonomy and its role in designing one’s own destiny. The Court’s endorsement of the liberatory value of bodily autonomy in Roe v. Wade, as later affirmed in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, rejected attempts to justify restrictive prohibitions on abortion as valid exercises of state police powers. However, the Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization threatens to fundamentally redefine the boundaries between the rights of individuals and those of …
Failures In The “Laboratories Of Democracy” And Democratic Due Process As Constitutional Guardrails, Matthew C. Clifford, F. Paul Bland Jr.
Failures In The “Laboratories Of Democracy” And Democratic Due Process As Constitutional Guardrails, Matthew C. Clifford, F. Paul Bland Jr.
SMU Law Review
In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court reversed decades of precedent supporting a substantive due process right to abortion under the Fourteenth Amendment, and purported to return the question of reproductive autonomy to the “democratic process” in the states. Justice Thomas, writing in concurrence, militated for reconsidering all of the Court’s substantive due process precedents. In today’s era of democratic backsliding, these are dangerous pronouncements with grave, if not existential, implications for democracy in the United States. The Dobbs majority hazardously asserted that state-level abortion legislation would, in fact, be the result of a democratic process. …

Ai Technology And Academic Writing: Knowing And Mastering The “Craft Skills”, Valerie A. Storey
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Evidence shows that artificial intelligence (AI) has become an essential academic subject, representing about 2.2% of all scientific publications. One concern for doctoral programs is the future role of AI in doctoral writing due to the increase in AI-generated content, such as text and images. Apprehensions have been expressed that the use of AI may have a negative impact on a doctoral student’s ability to think critically and creatively. In contrast, others argue that using AI tools can provide various benefits resulting in rigorous research. This conceptual article first discusses the developing relationship between AI and dissertation writing skills. Second, …

The Altavoces Project: A Digital Narrative Approach To Anti-Oppressive Social Work Research With Latino Youth, Jenn M. Lilly
The Altavoces Project: A Digital Narrative Approach To Anti-Oppressive Social Work Research With Latino Youth, Jenn M. Lilly
Social Service Faculty Publications
Although digital narrative methods lend themselves well to participatory, action-oriented inquiry, these relatively new methods also raise questions about potential risks involved in using digital technologies to engage marginalized groups in social work research. This article examines the feasibility, challenges, and opportunities of using digital narrative methods in anti-oppressive social work research (AOSWR) by providing empirical insights from the AltaVoces project—an AOSWR project that used digital narrative methods to engage Latino youth. This case study demonstrates the compatibility and feasibility of digital narrative methods in AOSWR by examining to what extent the AltaVoces project: (1) used methods that center the …

Latina Young People’S Perspectives On Healthy Romantic Relationships: A Strengths-Based, Qualitative Inquiry, Susan R. Pace, Jenn M. Lilly, Maddox C. Emerick
Social Service Faculty Publications
There is a dearth of research examining the relationship perspectives of Latina young people, a population that reports disproportionate rates of teen dating violence (TDV). This strengths-based, qualitative study utilized critical narrative inquiry to explore Latinas’ relationship perspectives through in-depth interviews. Rigorous analysis revealed participants’ desire for freedom from violence/abuse, open communication, independence, and egalitarian values in relationships, while reporting relationship models and media representation as their main influences on relationship perspectives. Our findings demonstrate that although patriarchal gender norms influence romantic relationships with Latinx cultures, many participants rejected traditional gendered power dynamics that can lead to violence, providing important …
“Putting My Life Into A Story”: A Preliminary Evaluation Of A Digital Narrative Intervention Combining Participatory Video And Narrative Therapy, Jenn M. Lilly
Social Service Faculty Publications
This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a digital narrative intervention that combined participatory video (PV) and narrative therapy practices to engage Latinx immigrant young people in processes of personal and societal change. Drawing on ethnographic field notes, process recordings, audio recordings of intervention implementation, and focus group data, this program evaluation offers empirical evidence of the impacts of this innovative, digital narrative intervention on Latinx immigrant young people (ages 18-24) in New Orleans. A constructivist grounded theory approach to data analysis resulted in three main themes: critical self-awareness, Latinx and immigrant pride, and media literacy. This study …

Producer Interviews And Analysis As A Tool For Science Communication And Research Implementation In Agriculture, Lacy Marie Barnette
Producer Interviews And Analysis As A Tool For Science Communication And Research Implementation In Agriculture, Lacy Marie Barnette
Theses and Dissertations
Research implementation beyond the laboratory requires both sound science and high-quality science communication. Science communication is an emerging field that is increasing in importance as the public has access to more information than ever, however there are some underlying obstacles like the lack of communication-specific training that scientists receive and disconnected populations. Agricultural producers have a perceived history of being disconnected from science even though modern agriculture relies heavily on researched practices and has an entire network of extension agencies intended to communicate with producers. One reason for this perceived disconnect is the one-way communication that has dominated science communication …
Oceanographic Applications Of A Monolithic Spatial Heterodyne Raman Spectrometer, Amanda Carol Agrawal
Oceanographic Applications Of A Monolithic Spatial Heterodyne Raman Spectrometer, Amanda Carol Agrawal
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon dioxide enters the ocean through a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources, and has a significant impact on ocean acidification, the marine buffering system, and bioavailability of life-essential carbonate ions. As carbon dioxide dissolves it reacts with water to form carbonic acid, which then rapidly dissociates into hydronium, bicarbonate, and carbonate ions. Some hydronium ions protonate carbonate to form bicarbonate, driving the carbonate concentration lower while there is a net increase in hydronium concentration. Monitoring the carbonate equilibrium system in the ocean is a complex analytical problem, where speciation is often measured or calculated indirectly ex situ. It …
Lived Experiences Of College-Educated Black Women: Contextualizing Gendered Racial Health Disparities, Christiana L. Johnson
Lived Experiences Of College-Educated Black Women: Contextualizing Gendered Racial Health Disparities, Christiana L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Black women are disproportionately affected by gendered racial health disparities. Public health research that seeks to unearth the root cause of these gendered racial health disparities is insufficient. More recently, researchers have turned their attention to structural inequities and their influence on the lived experiences of Black women. This study contributes to this body of work by using a theoretical concept derived from intersectionality⎯structural gendered racism⎯to identify key upstream social factors that shape nulliparous, college-educated Black women's lived experience and childbearing desires. Semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted with nulliparous, college-educated Black women (n=30), ages 25 to 35, living in the …
The Indirect Association Of Personality With Perceived Stress As Mediated By Humor In University Students During Covid-19, Jacqueline Sterghos
The Indirect Association Of Personality With Perceived Stress As Mediated By Humor In University Students During Covid-19, Jacqueline Sterghos
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Humor is known to be an effective coping strategy due to its stress-reducing capabilities (Overholser, 1992; Peterson & Seligman, 2004). However, more recent research into humor has revealed it can also lead to increased levels of stress (Fritz et al., 2017; Martin et al., 2003). Extraverts tend to have positive emotions and are better able to cope with stressful emotions (Ford et al., 2016). However, individuals higher in neuroticism are more likely to engage in maladaptive types of coping strategies and humor (Greengross et al., 2011), putting them at a higher risk for increased stress levels. The current research utilized …
Confocal Analysis Of Sindbis Virus In Aedes Aegypti Unveils Novel Infection Site At Pyloric Armature, Katie Gillian Peters
Confocal Analysis Of Sindbis Virus In Aedes Aegypti Unveils Novel Infection Site At Pyloric Armature, Katie Gillian Peters
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), such as Sindbis virus (SINV), generate foci of infection within the midgut of viremic blood-fed mosquitoes. Arboviruses can disseminate out of the midgut into the surrounding musculature and hemolymph, eventually making it to the salivary glands where virus can be transmitted by saliva during a subsequent blood-feed. In this study, the virus SINV containing the reporter gene GFP, combined with immunohistochemistry, was imaged using confocal microscopy and used to evaluate the infection within the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti. The spatial distribution of SINV infection revealed two common characteristics of foci generated in the midgut. (1) There …
