"Here's What's Not Changing": Institutional Adaptations That Respond To A Crisis But Preserve The Core, Hozami A. Helwani
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
An enduring tension in the study of institutions is between the micro level of agents’ activities that shape institutions and the macro level of institutions as enduring entities that tend to resist change. Institutions in crisis offer opportunities to look at urgent and adaptive changes. I study an Islamic organization that is representative of a religious institution, which has deep traditions and meaningfulness to its members. In a time of crisis, in the urban area in the United States where it is located, the organization is pressed by external parties, such as government, media, and leaders from other religions, to …
The Significance Of Maintaining Character Integrity In Literary Retellings, Sara Turner
The Significance Of Maintaining Character Integrity In Literary Retellings, Sara Turner
English (MA) Theses
Retellings of popular stories have become a prevalent form of storytelling in media and literature. This paper explores the background of the genre and the drive for creators to reimagine older stories, while also considering the “why” behind retellings. The claim is that maintaining the integrity of the characters from the original source material is what causes the story to translate and be received well by its audience. The characters that communicate the main themes of a story and they are what draw readers in, so if they are changed too drastically from the foundation created by the original author, …

Experiences Of Appalachian People With Conflicting Christian And Lgbtq+ Identities, Zacharias Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the experiences of six LGBTQ+ individuals living in Appalachia who have felt conflict between their LGBTQ+ and Christian identities. Using data from six one-on-one intensive interviews, the study examines the various kinds of conflict participants experienced, the strategies they used to manage those conflicts, and the role that Christianity played in their lives. The author found that participant conflicts were grounded in struggles to find acceptance from others while living authentically, to reconcile ideological disputes with the church, and to accept themselves as LGBTQ+ and/or Christian. Included among their various management strategies were finding accepting people and …

Improving Implant Training For Physicians And Their Teams In Under-Represented Regions, Jeilan Mohamed, Mohamed Varwani, Abdul Raqib, Emin Evren Ozcan
Internal Medicine, East Africa
The burden of cardiovascular disease is increasing globally, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) absorbing most of the burden while lacking the necessary healthcare infrastructure to combat the increase. In particular, the disparity in pacemaker implants between high-income countries and LMICs is glaring, partially spurned by reduced numbers of physicians and supporting staff who are trained in pacemaker implant technique. Herein, we will discuss current pacemaker implant training models, outline training frameworks that can be applied to underserved regions, and review adjunctive training techniques that can help supplement traditional training models in LMICs.
Examining Factors Among People With Opioid Use Disorder And Comorbid Mental Health Disorders, Tori Denae Livingston
Examining Factors Among People With Opioid Use Disorder And Comorbid Mental Health Disorders, Tori Denae Livingston
Theses and Dissertations
Opioid use disorder (OUD) affects over two million Americans, and over 42,000 Americans perished of opioid overdoses in 2016 (Volkow et al., 2019). During the initial years of the opioid crisis, overdose deaths were primarily attributed to prescription analgesics, heroin, and synthetic opioids. However, it was illicit prescription opioid painkiller use that ranked highest in terms of fatalities (Volkow et al., 2019). The increasing prevalence of opioid use among individuals with mental health disorders is in stark contrast to the ongoing opioid crisis (Prince, 2019). Additionally, there is evidence that individuals undergoing substance use treatment and concurrently suffering from a …

Improving Estimation Of Coronary Artery Disease Risk Using Haptoglobin Genotyping, Emily Kate Mewborn
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide. While several risk factors contributing to disease progression are well-known, pitfalls and limitations exist for estimating if or when an individual will develop the disease. Coronary artery disease (CAD), a subtype of ASCVD, causes myocardial infarction, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality. Current ASCVD risk estimator calculators lack comprehensiveness and do not include genetic or social determinants of health information, which are known to affect ASCVD risk.
Haptoglobin (Hp) genotype also influences CAD risk. Hp is a protein that binds free hemoglobin released from physiologic or pathologic …

T Cell Responsiveness Through The Ages: Functional Diversity Of Age-Dependent Antiviral Responses, Brandi L. Clark
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
An organism’s age impacts its susceptibility to disease, which varies according to the type of insult or causal pathogen. Much work remains to delineate these complexities, especially within younger individuals. Indeed, pediatric disease-driven immunity is less characterized than adult and aging populations due to two main factors: 1) descriptions through multiple stages of development are required, as the immune system undergoes massive changes from gestation through the end of adolescence, and 2) the complex nature of pediatric research decreases the availability of robust and comprehensive studies. Importantly, studying the immune system in relation to age requires a foundational knowledge within …

The Role Of Tcr Engagement Strength In Antitumor Cd8 T Cell Exhaustion, Xin Lan
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Durability of an antitumor immune response is mediated in part by the persistence of progenitor exhausted CD8 T cells (Tpex). Tpex serve as a source for the pool of effector T cells that tend to have a short lifespan or eventually become dysfunctional in uncleared tumors. In contrast to the short-lived feature of their daughter cells, Tpex are able to preserve their quantity and developmental potential through a process of self-renewal. Previous research has demonstrated that Tpex can even self-renew in the absence of their cognate antigen. However, it remains unknown how T cell receptor (TCR) engagement impacts the self-renewal …

Enhancing Our Understanding Of Ancient Oceans Through The Investigation Of Molybdenum Behavior Under Sulfidic Conditions, Rachel Faye Phillips
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The most abundant trace metal in the ocean today, molybdenum (Mo), exhibits distinct behavior in oxygenated water, where it remains predominantly dissolved, compared to euxinic (i.e., oxygen-free and sulfidic) water, in which it is sequestered into the sediment. This dissimilar behavior allows us to use Mo concentrations and isotopic compositions in sediment to reconstruct marine oxygenation conditions throughout geologic history. However, Mo sequestration mechanisms under euxinic conditions remain unresolved, which limits the accuracy and precision of reconstructions made using Mo signatures in the rock record. For my doctoral research, I experimentally investigated abiotic and biotic Mo sequestration mechanisms under various …
