Bayesian Strategies For Propensity Score Estimation In Causal Inference., Uthpala I. Wanigasekara Dec 2023

Bayesian Strategies For Propensity Score Estimation In Causal Inference., Uthpala I. Wanigasekara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Causal inference is a method used in various fields to draw causal conclusions based on data. It involves using assumptions, study designs, and estimation strategies to minimize the impact of confounding variables. Propensity scores are used to estimate outcome effects, through matching methods, stratification, weighting methods, and the Covariate Balancing Propensity Score method. However, they can be sensitive to estimation techniques and can lead to unstable findings. Researchers have proposed integrating weighing with regression adjustment in parametric models to improve causal inference validity. The first project focuses on Bayesian joint and two-stage methods for propensity score analysis. Propensity score modeling …

The Self-Consistent Field Energy Landscape And Its Application To Describing Electron Correlation., Xinju (Spancer) Dong Dec 2023

The Self-Consistent Field Energy Landscape And Its Application To Describing Electron Correlation., Xinju (Spancer) Dong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Global elucidation of SCF (self-consistent-field) solutions is an extension of global optimization in which the goal is the identification of all solutions, which can be defined as a NP (nonpolynomial)-hard problem. The value of identifying multiple SCF solutions is to use as reference wavefunctions, such as NOCI (nonorthogonal configuration interactions), NOMCSCF (nonorthogonal multiconfigurational SCF), etc. However, the high-dimensional space over which to search and the relatively high cost of local optimization in Hartree-Fock (HF) models cause difficulty in efficiently searching over the full SCF space. In order to address the technical issues of high-dimensionality and nonlinearity, a Lie algebraic description …

Adaptive Personalized Drug Delivery Method For Warfarin And Anemia Management: Modeling And Control., Affan Affan Dec 2023

Adaptive Personalized Drug Delivery Method For Warfarin And Anemia Management: Modeling And Control., Affan Affan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Personalized precision medicine aims to develop the appropriate treatments for suitable patients at the right time to obtain optimal results. Personalized medicine is challenging due to inter- and intra-patient variability, narrow therapeutic window, the effect of other medications, comorbidity (more than one disease at a time), nonlinear patient dynamics, and time-varying patient dose response characteristics which include bleeding (internal and external). This research aims to develop a framework for an adaptive personalized modeling and control method with minimum clinical patient specific dose response data for optimal drug dosing. The proposed methodology is applied to anemia and warfarin management. It is …

Causal Inference For The Effect Of Continuous Treatment On Time-To-Event Outcomes And Mediation Analysis On Health Disparities In Observational Studies., Triparna Poddar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation comprises two projects related to causal inference based on observational data. In healthcare research, where abundant observational data such as claims data and electronic records are available, researchers often aim to study the treatment effect and the pathway of that effect. However, estimating treatment effects in observational data presents challenges due to confounding factors. The first project focuses on estimating continuous treatment effects for survival outcomes, while the second concentrates on mediation analysis, allowing the exploration of the pathway of the causal effect. Both projects involve addressing confounding variables. In the first project, I investigate estimation of the …

Impact Of Weather Factors On Airport Arrival Rates: Application Of Machine Learning In Air Transportation, Robert W. Maxson, Dothang Truong, Woojin Choi Dec 2023

Impact Of Weather Factors On Airport Arrival Rates: Application Of Machine Learning In Air Transportation, Robert W. Maxson, Dothang Truong, Woojin Choi

Publications

Weather is responsible for approximately 70% of air transportation delays in the National Airspace System, and delays resulting from convective weather alone cost airlines and passengers millions of dollars each year due to delays that could be avoided. This research sought to establish relationships between environmental variables and airport efficiency estimates by data mining archived weather and airport performance data at ten geographically and climatologically different airports. Several meaningful relationships were discovered from six out of ten airports using various machine learning methods within an overarching data mining protocol, and the developed models were tested using historical data.

The “Nurseries Of Republicans”: French Collèges After The Jesuit Expulsion, 1763-1793, Kaci Parker Dec 2023

The “Nurseries Of Republicans”: French Collèges After The Jesuit Expulsion, 1763-1793, Kaci Parker

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The landscape of secondary education before the French Revolution has not yet been studied as a potential cause of, and factor in, the coming Revolution. After the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1763, their secondary schools—the collèges—were confiscated by the government. This government coalition of the royal monarchy and the law courts of France, known as the parlements, took over the schools and ran them as the “Interim” system. Despite previous historiography which stresses the continuity of these systems, my research has found that there were deep changes that happened in both the curriculum and the teachers …

Design Of An Angle Measurement Device Using Ultrasonic Pairs, Shadi Khanpour Doustkar Dec 2023

Design Of An Angle Measurement Device Using Ultrasonic Pairs, Shadi Khanpour Doustkar

Electrical Engineering

In this paper, a new concept for ultrasonic indoor positioning built upon instantaneous frequency of ultrasonic signals is presented. Ultrasonic sensors are inexpensive and manageable sensors; they are currently not used to good advantage with their potential for the electronics industry. The current ultrasonic sensors in the market only present a distance value to the nearest object for the user and due to this kind of feedback, it’s not attainable to find the relative position of the object from the sensor in a detection area; examples vary from workpieces and robots to even people. By using an algorithm and multiple …

A Bioinspired Astrocyte-Derived Coating Promotes The In Vitro Proliferation Of Human Neural Stem Cells While Maintaining Their Stemness, Andrea C. Jimenez-Vergara, Jacob Avina, Travis Jackson Block, Anne Sheldrake, Carson Koch, Anna Gonzalez, Jennifer Steele, Ana M. Díaz-Lasprilla, Dany J. Munoz-Pinto

Engineering Faculty Research

The repair of neuronal tissue is a challenging process due to the limited proliferative capacity of neurons. Neural stem cells (NSCs) can aid in the regeneration process of neural tissue due to their high proliferation potential and capacity to differentiate into neurons. The therapeutic potential of these cells can only be achieved if sufficient cells are obtained without losing their differentiation potential. Toward this end, an astrocyte-derived coating (HAc) was evaluated as a promising substrate to promote the proliferation of NSCs. Mass spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the HAc. The proliferation rate and the expression of …

Why We Should Have More Walkable Cities, Alexander Huddleston Dec 2023

Why We Should Have More Walkable Cities, Alexander Huddleston

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

The walkable city is something that is seen all over Europe but is a rarity in the United States. The rise of cheap oil in the first half of the 20th century led to the expansion of the suburbs and a car culture that we just can’t get away from. Our cities are now so spread out, causing more and more pollution and damage done to our environment. There is a lot that we know about this issue and the solutions that we can get done to fix it. America is stuck in a car culture that is so hard …

The Essential Role of Fossil Fuels in Combating Climate Change

Eminent Domain: Unconstitutional, Unjust, And Unnecessary, Ashley Norris Dec 2023

Eminent Domain: Unconstitutional, Unjust, And Unnecessary, Ashley Norris

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Perhaps the most important undertaking of our time is the ubiquity of sustainable energy vital for the continuation and improvement of living conditions worldwide. The utmost care must be taken with the means used to achieve this feat. The fossil fuel industry has used and abused eminent domain since its inception. Ironically, environmental advocates now propose the same means to a cleaner, greener end. The taking of private land for private development, regardless of intent, is unconstitutional, unjust, and unnecessary. The Fifth Amendment states: “…nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

As stated by the …

Navigating The Green Skies: Why Saf Is The Wrong Path To Take, Cameron Cannon Dec 2023

Navigating The Green Skies: Why Saf Is The Wrong Path To Take, Cameron Cannon

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

With its promise of a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable aviation fuels, or SAFs, have been hailed as an environmentally friendly substitute for conventional aviation fuels. SAFs are made from sustainable resources such as plant biomass, waste oils, or agricultural wastes and are intended to mitigate environmental issues. On closer examination, though, this solution's intricacy becomes clear. Grab your mental compass and journey with me as we discover why SAFs would lead us the wrong way.

A Novel Approach To Predicting Customer Lifetime Value In B2b Saas Companies, Stephan Curiskis, Xiaojing Dong, Fan Jiang, Mark Scarr Dec 2023

A Novel Approach To Predicting Customer Lifetime Value In B2b Saas Companies, Stephan Curiskis, Xiaojing Dong, Fan Jiang, Mark Scarr

Marketing

In this paper, we propose a flexible machine learning framework to predict customer lifetime value (CLV) in the Business-to-Business (B2B) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) setting. The substantive and modeling challenges that surface in this context relate to more nuanced customer relationships, highly heterogeneous populations, multiple product offerings, and temporal data constraints. To tackle these issues, we treat the CLV estimation as a lump sum prediction problem across multiple products and develop a hierarchical ensembled CLV model. Lump sum prediction enables the use of a wide range of supervised machine learning techniques, which provide additional flexibility, richer features and exhibit an improvement over …

Novel Implementation Of Additive Manufacturing To Visualize The Human Brain Connectome, Greg Tyler

Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses

Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging technology with diverse areas of application. In this paper we explore a new application of AM that uses a subset of AM known as 3D printing, to create real life models of the human connectome. The human connectome is a color coded map of the connections in the human brain where directions are indicated by colors and the density of connections are indicated by color intensity.

There are several different algorithms for mapping the connections and describing the output. The Neu- roImaging Tools and Resource Collaboratory (NITRC) provides one such algorithm. It uses probabilistic …

Improved Version Of Double-Layer Enclosure Demo, Said Shakerin Dec 2023

Improved Version Of Double-Layer Enclosure Demo, Said Shakerin

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The purpose of this letter is to present an improved version of one of the enclosure demonstrations previously reported as a part of a paper in this journal.1 Specifically, I am referring to the double-layered enclosure containing air and two different colors of glycerin, blue in the front and yellow in the back. The new version has two modifications. First, a horizontal partition with two gaps (1/4-in. wide, each) is added in each layer. The role of the partition is to slow down the exchange between the glycerin and air, and therefore provide for a longer time to observe …

The Discovery Of Diverse Picophytoplankton Populations In The Columbia And Willamette Rivers Using Flow Cytometry, Kylee M. Lamberson

Chemistry Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses

As important primary producers, picophytoplankton determine the flow of carbon and energy in aquatic ecosystems. Picocyanobacteria are one picophytoplankton group known to be dominant in oceans and lakes, but they are still poorly understood in river systems. This project examined picophytoplankton communities in two distinct river systems: the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in Portland, Oregon. I aimed to characterize and quantify the picophytoplankton populations in the context of the environmental conditions of the two rivers. I used flow cytometry to detect cells based on their relative size and pigment fluorescence. I sampled nearly weekly for ten months to capture population …

Multi-Scale Characteriziation Of Pore Structure And Mass Transport In Natural Rocks, Xiaoqing Yuan

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

The mass transport process in porous natural rocks is notably influenced by the pore structure with both geometrical and topological attributes. Nevertheless, previous studies have not taken into consideration the sample size effect or the impact of diagenesis processes on petrophysical investigations of rocks, fluids, and rock-fluid interactions. Six rocks (one granodiorite, one limestone, two chalks, one mudstone, and one dolostone) with different extents of heterogeneity at six different particle sizes were studied to describe the effects of pore structure (especially connectivity) on mass transport. Thirteen geologically different rocks (two marbles, four fossiliferous limestones, six mudstones, and one sandstone) were …

Constructing Large Open-Source Corpora And Leveraging Language Models For Simulink Toolchain Testing And Analysis, Sohil Lal Shrestha

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In several safety-critical industries such as automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and industrial automation, MATLAB/Simulink has emerged as the de-facto standard tool for system modeling and analysis, model compilation into executable code, and code deployment onto embedded hardware. Within the context of cyber-physical system (CPS) development, it is imperative to both rigorously test the development tools, such as MathWorks’ Simulink, and understand modeling practices and model evolution. The existing body of work faces limitations primarily stemming from two factors: (1) contemporary testing methodologies often prove inefficient in identifying critical toolchain bugs due to a paucity of explicit toolchain specifications and (2) there …

The Radical Power Of Education, Arindam Nandi, Nicole Haberland, Thoai Ngo Dec 2023

The Radical Power Of Education, Arindam Nandi, Nicole Haberland, Thoai Ngo

Gender, Education, Justice, and Equity (GEJE)

When education works, people thrive and societies flourish alongside economies. We have made real progress on primary enrollment on the global scale, with 90% of children enrolling in school. However, completion rates lag far behind—only 77% of children complete lower secondary school and 58% complete upper secondary. Those numbers decline sharply for those living in poverty, for girls, and for Indigenous communities, with 44% of adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) either dropping out of primary school or never attending at all.

Low educational attainment and illiteracy exclude children from the freedoms that come with learning and also …

The proposed protoplanet AB Aur b is a spatially concentrated emission source imaged in the millimeter-wavelength disk gap of the Herbig Ae/Be star AB Aur. Its near-infrared spectrum and absence of strong polarized light have been interpreted as evidence supporting the protoplanet interpretation. However, the complex scattered-light structures in the AB Aur disk pose challenges in resolving the emission source and interpreting the true nature of AB Aur b. We present new images of the AB Aur system obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical bands. AB Aur b and the …
