An Slp Graduate Student’S Analysis Of Language In Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Madeline Janney, Donna Thomas
Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration
Purpose
Students in allied health professional (AHP) programs are instructed in evidenced-based evaluation practices and participate in interprofessional education and practice in order to identify disorders (e.g., speech, language, gross motor, fine motor) and provide effective treatment. The purpose of this paper is to present a small-scale research study of one graduate student in an AHP program that trains speech-language pathologists.
Method
A graduate student used retrospective methodology to examine the language skills of nine children with speech sound disorders (SSD) to determine if language impairment (LI) co-existed. The student learned and used a method of language sample analysis known …

In 2019, the Government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) introduced a new primary education curriculum to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes. The Government’s Education and Sports Sector Development Plan 2021- 25 focuses on improving teacher knowledge and skills as a means to improve student learning outcomes. This report summarises baseline findings just prior to these significant curriculum changes. These changes are supported by the Australian Government through its Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos (BEQUAL) program. The Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has commissioned a study to investigate how BEQUAL is …
Bloody Rationality: The Dialectic Of Modern Reason And Sacrifice In Hegel, Adorno, And Horkheimer, Cara S. Greene
Bloody Rationality: The Dialectic Of Modern Reason And Sacrifice In Hegel, Adorno, And Horkheimer, Cara S. Greene
Philosophy ETDs
In my dissertation, I argue that Hegel, Adorno, and Horkheimer develop theories of modern sacrifice grounded in their critiques of modern reason—what Hegel calls “the Understanding” and Adorno and Horkheimer call “instrumental reason.” I contend that these thinkers recognize the process of rational cognition, which abstracts conceptual data from empirical reality and establishes the dominance of the universal over particular phenomena, as a sacrificial process—a view supported by their routine description of this process using the language of violence and death. However, this sacrificial conception of modern reason isn’t metaphorical: when read alongside their analyses of discursive cunning, an instrumental …

A Survey On High Dimensional Computing With Arabic Language Processing, George Samy Rady, Mamdouh Farouk Mohamed
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A growing amount of Arabic textual content comes accessible via the World Wide Web in properties and companies via Internet and Intranet services, there is a pressing need for technology and tools to handle the relevant data. In the context of Arabic processing of language, high-dimensional computation. The stemming method is intended to be used throughout document categorization to lower the high dimensionality of the domain of features, which improves categorization system performance, especially for highly modulating languages such as Arabic. It then digs into other sub-topics, such as methods for decreasing dimensionality, categorization computations, natural language processing jobs, and …

Automated Classification Of User Requirements Written In Arabic Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Ahmad Althunibat, Reem Amro, Belal Hawashin, Hend Alnuhait, Sally Almanasra, Haneen A. Al-Khawaja
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Requirement engineering is a critical step in software engineering, influencing software development outcomes. The manual classification of software requirements into Functional Requirements and Non-Functional Requirements is a laborious and costly process with varying accuracy. Errors in classification can lead to misunderstandings and incomplete products. Arabic requirements pose additional challenges due to their structural and semantic characteristics, contributing to inherent ambiguity. In addition to the lack of Arabic Studies as well as the public datasets for requirements written in Arabic. This study proposes combining machine learning and deep learning algorithms, including K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Random Forest, XGBoost, and …
Likeness In Utopia: Situation And Metaphor From Thomas More To Edward Bellamy, Sage Rachmiel Bard Gilbert
Likeness In Utopia: Situation And Metaphor From Thomas More To Edward Bellamy, Sage Rachmiel Bard Gilbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a literary genre, utopia is notably didactic. It seeks to teach desire and to educate hope. As such, utopia provides a unique site to examine the way metaphor and imagination enable one to be convinced, and the way those same elements facilitate misunderstanding. Following the theorization of Ernst Bloch, the goal of critiquing these literary utopias is not to reject hope but, rather, to educate our own daydreams, to learn and move forward. These chapters examine didacticism and the development of colonial metonymy in Thomas More’s Utopia, the way metaphor operates through time in Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward: …
Putting It Gently: The Other Side Of A Peace Corps Volunteer Experience, Nicole Jacobson
Putting It Gently: The Other Side Of A Peace Corps Volunteer Experience, Nicole Jacobson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Peace Corps is a transformative experience for many young Americans. The majority of volunteers have worthwhile services they remember fondly; however, these experiences are not always positive. The Peace Corps is a Cold War initiative that uses soft power techniques to further American exceptionalism, capitalism, and the modernization theory of development. The goal of this project was to understand what factors led to the negative experiences of Peace Corps Volunteers. I conducted an ethnography that focused on online communities, semi-structured interviews, Peace Corps memoirs, and news articles to understand Peace Corps Volunteers’ experiences and the organizational culture where they …

Diabetes Mellitus corresponds with an increased risk of severe COVID-19 infection and high morbidity and mortality rates. Persons living with diabetes are more likely to encounter psychosocial problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress than the broader population. As the global pandemic unfolded, it was paramount to determine the health-related quality of life (QoL) and explore the experiences of patients with diabetes and COVID-19 to enable healthcare providers to recognize the components influencing HRQoL and identify the interventions to improve the health outcomes. The study was done to determine the health-related quality of life and experiences of patients with diabetes …

Boots On The Ground: Foreign Direct Investment By Born Digital Firms, Maximilian Stalkkamp, Liang Chen, Sali Li
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research Summary: Recent global strategy research on born digital firms (i.e., firms with digital products distributed through digital channels) has paid only limited attention to the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the internationalization of such firms. We argue that exploiting digital technologies requires a range of complementary, non-digital resources. Born digitals typically deploy FDI when large cultural and geographic distances limit the fungibility and scalability of such complementary resources, leading to a positive relationship between distance (cultural and geographic) and FDI. The positive distance effect is moderated by business model type. Using a sample of US-based born digital …

Effective And Efficient Semantic Representations And Their Applications, Chong Cher Chia
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The proliferation of affordable and compact digital storage has also led to the creation of enormous databases of information, and much attention has been focused on the problem of processing unorganized and unstructured information into some form from which additional value can be extracted. Contemporary approaches to this problem virtually necessitate the use of complex models running on computational systems due to the sheer volume of information to be processed. While it is possible for the model to be fed the actual data as input, typically a representation of the data is used instead. These representations are therefore of interest, …

For those looking for mental health treatments, chatbots have evolved as user-friendly, accessible platforms that provide remote access and convenience. However, for chatbots to be effective, users must divulge personal and sensitive information, such as demographics, insurance information, and a history of mental illness. While chatbots offer services to a variety of demographic users, older adults face unique challenges related to usability, …
Towards Critical Reflexivity In Gifted Education Teacher Preparation, Inna Kruvi
Towards Critical Reflexivity In Gifted Education Teacher Preparation, Inna Kruvi
Theses and Dissertations
Ever since the emergence of gifted education in the United States in the beginning of the twentieth century, the concept of giftedness has been used to marginalize, segregate, and exclude students of particular backgrounds from specialized academic programs. Among the factors that contribute to unequal access to gifted education for ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse (ECLED) students, teacher bias, deficit thinking, and insufficient teacher preparation have been identified as especially significant (Coleman et al., 2015; DeWet & Gubbins, 2011; Mansfield, 2015). Among various approaches to mitigate underrepresentation of ECLED students, the concept of cultural humility (Tervalon and Murray-Garcia, 1998) …

A Survey On Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis: Tasks, Methods, And Challenges, Wenxuan Zhang, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As an important fine-grained sentiment analysis problem, aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA), aiming to analyze and understand people's opinions at the aspect level, has been attracting considerable interest in the last decade. To handle ABSA in different scenarios, various tasks are introduced for analyzing different sentiment elements and their relations, including the aspect term, aspect category, opinion term, and sentiment polarity. Unlike early ABSA works focusing on a single sentiment element, many compound ABSA tasks involving multiple elements have been studied in recent years for capturing more complete aspect-level sentiment information. However, a systematic review of various ABSA tasks and their …
Social Sanguinity: Communal Ties And The Pursuit Of Political Power In Saga Age Iceland, Sam Fearnside
Social Sanguinity: Communal Ties And The Pursuit Of Political Power In Saga Age Iceland, Sam Fearnside
History Theses
Prior to the Norwegian annexation, Icelandic society lacked a government with an executive branch. As a result their legal system evolved in a highly privatized fashion in which individuals and their families were expected to self-advocate in order to assert and defend their rights and interests. Icelandic law also privatized the prosecution of criminals and enforcement of legal verdicts. Such a legal system required individual Icelanders to forge and maintain an array of social connections in order to protect themselves from both legal actions brought against them and the violent feuds that resulted due to the system’s short comings.

Challenging Vocabulary Words In Graphic Novels: A Multimodal Content Analysis, Karyn Z. Mendez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recreational reading is in a decline for upper elementary aged readers, and along with this decline comes consequent declines in students’ ability to make meaning from what they read and their acquisition of different language forms, including the acquisition of new vocabulary words. However, one reading format is increasing in popularity: graphic novels. As graphic novels, along with other texts with both textual and visual elements, become an increasingly prevalent way of reading in the 21st century, it is important to look at the possibilities multimodal texts have for foundational literacy skills, such as vocabulary acquisition. To date, however, the …

An Illuminative Evaluation Of Two Models Of Reading Intervention Used In Middle Schools, Tachier M. Rezac
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Intervention research often investigates the curriculum or methods used to support learners, while less attention is given to the model of those interventions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two models of reading intervention, and to better understand how they are serving middle school students. Working from a critical pragmatic lens, I employed illuminative evaluation methods to investigate three research questions: (a) What are the demographic profiles of students enrolled in reading intervention in grades seven and eight; (b) What are the differences in gains for students enrolled in the traditional intervention and reading lab …

Housing Discrimination And Negative Attitudes Towards Ex-Offender Parents, Julie Wertheimer-Meier
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While the Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, gender, religion, sex, disability, family status, and national origin, it allows housing providers to discriminate on the basis of criminal history. Prior research shows that housing providers disproportionately deny housing to ex-offender applicants and single parent applicants with young children. An ex-offender parent’s inability to acquire safe and affordable housing decreases the potential for reunification with their children and increases the risk of lost custody or parental rights termination. This dissertation consisted of two experiments that examined the effects of negative attitudes towards ex-offender parents on those parents’ ability …
