Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Out-Of-Field Teaching: Implications For Students, Teachers And Schools, Elizabeth Wheeley, Helen Klieve, Eunjae Park, Anna Du Plessis
Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Out-Of-Field Teaching: Implications For Students, Teachers And Schools, Elizabeth Wheeley, Helen Klieve, Eunjae Park, Anna Du Plessis
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Out-of-field teaching occurs in schools and education systems worldwide. Early career teachers are more likely to be required to teach out-of-field and also to experience adverse effects from this experience, potentially contributing to workforce issues and teacher attrition. This mixed data Australian study reports on the perceptions of preservice teachers—emerging professionals—regarding issues associated with out-of-field teaching. Survey data were collected from 133 preservice teachers. Data were analysed with an initial layer of sentiment analysis followed by a thematic analysis of their perceptions of consequences for teachers, students, and schools/communities. Findings reveal that preservice teachers are very aware of the mostly …
The Structural Harms Of Providing Mental Health Services Through The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Heather Swadley
The Structural Harms Of Providing Mental Health Services Through The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Heather Swadley
Nebraska Law Review
Many have proclaimed that the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is the most sweeping gun control legislation to be passed in decades. However, the bill is not primarily a gun control bill—instead, much of the Act seeks to improve mental health services in hopes of preventing gun violence. Such a move is not rooted in established evidence, which finds little predictive value in knowing an individual’s mental health history. In fact, people with mental health disabilities are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators. The Act therefore shifts the debate about gun reform from one about easy access …
‘More Than A Woman To Me’: The Need For Gender Inclusive Language In Court Opinions And Statutes Relating To Abortion And Reproductive Health, Murphy Cavanaugh
‘More Than A Woman To Me’: The Need For Gender Inclusive Language In Court Opinions And Statutes Relating To Abortion And Reproductive Health, Murphy Cavanaugh
Nebraska Law Review
After the Supreme Court of the United States returned authority to regulate abortion to the state level in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, many states began to redraft their statutes, either protecting or eliminating abortion access. In doing this, the Supreme Court intensified demands for gender-inclusive language in reproductive healthcare legislation and court opinions. The ongoing shift in discourse acknowledges the reproductive healthcare needs of transgender and nonbinary (“TGNB”) people, given the already limited access to general healthcare. This comment emphasizes the importance of genderinclusive language in the American legal system, arguing for a departure from anatomy-centered language …

Qualitative Oral-Presentation Feedback: Comparisons From Business Professionals, Instructors, And Student Peers, Matt Baker, William H. Baker
Qualitative Oral-Presentation Feedback: Comparisons From Business Professionals, Instructors, And Student Peers, Matt Baker, William H. Baker
Faculty Publications
Previous studies compare quantitative feedback ratings of student peers and instructors, but new presentation-feedback technologies enable qualitative-feedback comparison. This study extends previous research by comparing qualitative feedback and business professionals’ feedback. Compared to the professionals, the instructors provided similar feedback types and sentiment; students, however, de-emphasized message delivery and made fewer suggestions for improvement. The results suggest that students may need additional practice in critiquing message delivery and in suggesting needed improvements in their peers’ oral presentations. The study also provides a methodology using the new technologies for instructors to calibrate their own and their students’ feedback with professionals’ feedback.
Principle Originalism--The Third Way: A Jurisprudential Response To Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Ryan Fortson
Principle Originalism--The Third Way: A Jurisprudential Response To Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Ryan Fortson
American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
All judges attempt to decide cases for reasons other than politics or their own personal opinions. But finding a consistent judicial methodology is fraught with peril. Against what it sees as the hyper-textualism of strict constructionism and the unfettered discretion of living constitutionalism, originalism posits itself as the only viable way to achieve an objectively neutral interpretation of the law. This is certainly the stance taken by the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which claims that the Constitution is silent on abortion and that therefore no corresponding right to abortion exists. But there can be different …

Daily Activities And Routines: A Comparative Case Study Of The Home Language And Literacy Environment Of Spanish-Speaking Toddlers With And Without Older Siblings, Eugenia Crosby-Quinatoa
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify malleable practices in the homes of Spanish-speaking toddlers prior to school enrollment. This was achieved by examining daily activities and routines and the role older siblings played in these interactions to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the home language and literacy environment and practices. Additionally, this study aimed to explore, through the narratives and responses of mothers, the home experiences, beliefs, values, and goals associated with toddlers’ development, particularly early language and literacy. This study included four Spanish-speaking families with toddlers, two of which did not have an older sibling residing …

Pattern-Based Target Selection For Treatment Of Irregular Past Tense: A Single-Case Experimental Design For Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Kirsten M. Russell, Amy Wilder, Julie L. Wambaugh
Faculty Publications
Purpose: Many children with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate
difficulty inflecting irregular past tense verbs. We evaluated using phonological-
based patterns (i.e., schemas) to select targets for treatment of irregular verb inflection for children with DLD. We hypothesized this approach would result in acquisition of treated verbs, generalization to untreated verbs within the same phonological schema, and increased use of correct irregular verbs in naturalistic contexts. Method: Treatment was provided to three 7-year-old participants with DLD in the context of multiple baseline designs across behaviors and participants. Phonological schemas included vowel change, final alveolar, and dual change irregular verbs. Treatment …

Research points to negative associations between educational success, socioemotional functioning, and the severity of symptoms in some speech-language disorders (SLDs). Nonetheless, the majority of studies examining SLDs in children have focused on monolinguals. More research is needed to determine whether the scant findings among multilinguals are robust. The present study used parent report data from the U.S. National Survey of Children’s Health (2018 to 2020) to gain a better understanding of the impacts of SLD severity on indicators of academic success and socioemotional functioning among multilingual (n = 255) and English monolingual (n = 5,952) children with SLDs. …

INTRODUCTION: Writing difficulties frequently manifest comorbidly with reading challenges, and reading is implicated in particular acts of writing, such as reviewing and editing. Despite what is known, however, there remain significant barriers to understanding the nature of reading-writing relations, as few studies are comprehensive in the number and types of literacy skills evaluated. This study consists of a secondary data analysis of two studies employing structural equation modeling (SEM) to evaluate relations among reading and writing components skills independently, using the Direct and Inferential Mediation Model (DIME) of reading comprehension and Not-so-Simple View of Writing (NSVW) as theoretical frameworks.

Children are significant stakeholders within education and care settings. Their views can be invaluable in thinking about what matters to conceptualising, assessing and improving quality in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) settings. As stakeholders, children’s views are rarely listened to by Australian policy makers to assess what constitutes quality and how the quality can be improved. In the process of updating two nationally approved Australian Learning Frameworks (ALFs): Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia 2.0 and My Time Our Place: Framework for School Age Care in Australia 2.0, …

Identity shifting represents a common but complex social, behavioral, and cognitive phenomenon. However, some forms of identity shifting originate in response to structural, institutional, and interpersonal marginalization enacted on lower status groups, such as people of color in the United States. The current study investigated ways young adults from diverse ethnic/racial groups discussed shifting to fit in with White Americans (a dominant group) in the United States and their own ethnic/racial group (a minoritized group) and elucidated self-reported motivations for shifting. Participants consisted of 764 young adults (ages = 18–23) recruited from two large public universities in the Southeast and …
