Factors Impacting Racial Minority Student Achievement, Morgan Mcgarry Jan 2023

Factors Impacting Racial Minority Student Achievement, Morgan Mcgarry

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper researches factors impacting racial minority student achievement. The question “What factors impact racial minority student achievement?” was used to find published research articles. While the research does not specifically state that racial minority students are the only ones impacted, additional research was done to support these factors and explain how they are impacted to a greater degree than their white counterparts. Six factors were identified as prominent influences on racial minority student achievement: peers and friends, school culture and staff within the building, social media, family and culture, socioeconomic status, and intrinsic and other self-related factors. Research determined …

How Mtss And Udl Frameworks Can Be Used To Reach All Learners And Reduce Unnecessary Special Education Evaluations, Marwa Sayed Sallam Jan 2023

How Mtss And Udl Frameworks Can Be Used To Reach All Learners And Reduce Unnecessary Special Education Evaluations, Marwa Sayed Sallam

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The global COVID pandemic changed the educational landscape as we knew it in a drastic way. With the rise of special education evaluation requests and a need to strengthen the MTSS framework across schools, an urgency developed around the intersection of MTSS with interventions, including how accurately implementing UDL strategies could alleviate the pressure on the MTSS framework at schools. Many schools who were previously reactive to students who were struggling academically or behaviorally needed to take a more proactive and intentional approach. The author of this thesis reviewed a number of relevant literature that explored different examples of educational …

Have Your Cake And Eat It Too (Unless You Are Danny Brock): The Irony Of Missouri’S Co-Employee Liability Statute, Taylor M. Harrington

Missouri Law Review

April 30, 2013, started like any other day for Danny Brock. Like each day before, he woke up, drove to work, and clocked in. A few hours later, he looked down to see his thumb completely detached from his hand, barely hanging on by the skin. When the injury occurred, Brock was following direct orders from his supervisor, Mark Edwards. Citing safety concerns, Brock opposed the request. But Edwards demanded that Brock proceed. Fearing loss of employment, Brock did as he was told. As predicted, injury ensued. Within seconds, Brock’s hand was crushed. Brock underwent three surgeries and sustained permanent …

Breastfeeding Promotion In The Workplace, Katie C. Nettesheim

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Breastfeeding is one of the best things a mother can do for her baby. It has many protective qualities including a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, respiratory infections, ear infections, and stomach bugs for the baby (CDC, 2022). There are also protective qualities for the mother as well, including a reduced risk of high blood pressure, breast and ovarian cancer, and type II diabetes. Breastfeeding exclusively, the infant only receives breastmilk and no other supplementation for 6 months, which maximizes the many benefits that breastfeeding has.

Rural areas of the United States …

This study also examined the use of generalization of skills with using generative learning.

Strength In Numbers: Group Rights, Exit, Self-Determination, And Recognition, Ángel Oquendo Jan 2023

Strength In Numbers: Group Rights, Exit, Self-Determination, And Recognition, Ángel Oquendo

Faculty Articles and Papers

Joint entitlements have bred controversy, recurrently rejection, within the Anglo-American philosophical, politically scientific universe in unison with its Continental European counterpart. They will occupy the present discussion, steadily structuring it. It will painstakingly parse the Northern Atlantic disputation around them, in correspondence with the conundrums ranging from definitional to practical chalked up to them, cautiously riding to their rescue. Immersed in their thickness for an interfusion with policy, rights credited to a group, denominated as such, might pretend to legitimacy. On account of their judiciability, they might deserve their denomination. Straightaway, one could dovetail them with any other that likewise …

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Hispanics/Latinos, particularly those that identify as foreign-born, are overrepresented in the agricultural sector in the U.S. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, this subpopulation of farmworkers was recognized as an invaluable group of essential workers unable to implement COVID-19 protections.

METHODS: Previously validated COVID-19 stress scale measures were identified, adapted, and translated to collect COVID-19 stress data from Hispanic/Latino agricultural workers in two heavily agricultural counties in northeastern North Carolina. Participants were recruited using purposive convenience sampling. Data collection took place from June to November of 2021.

RESULTS: The majority of Hispanic/Latino agricultural workers surveyed reported experiencing worries …

A Cultural Shift In Education: Raising The Standards And Value Of Public School Teachers In The Us, Christopher Lacreta Jan 2023

A Cultural Shift In Education: Raising The Standards And Value Of Public School Teachers In The Us, Christopher Lacreta

Pepperdine Policy Review

The U.S. consistently falls behind the rest of the world in PISA scoring and other international exams. For the past several decades, education policy has centered around improving education at the student level, while overlooking the quality of the most important actor — teachers. As the shortage of teachers continues to increase across the United States, political leaders attempt to remedy this situation by emergency credentialing teachers, waiving important testing requirements, and increasing teacher salaries without the improvement of measured performance. This paper analyzes case studies both internationally and at the state level to offer an alternative that will seek …

Disruption, Dissent, And Dialogue: Ypar As A Pedagogical And Institutional Tool, Charlene E. Holkenbrink-Monk

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Education reform has been at the forefront of educational research for decades, depicted by government initiatives and policy, research, and pedagogical changes and recommendations. When considering elements of educational change, policy, best practices, and individual merit and retention have also been heavily in the spotlight, such as A Nation at Risk, No Child Left Behind , and other policies that have been put forward. What is often left out is student voice, both within policy as well as ideas around what should be changed. Based on my pilot study, I found that students also did not feel adequately represented in …

As Below So Above: Reconstructing The Neo-Babylonian Worldview, Heather Marie Burrow Jan 2023

As Below So Above: Reconstructing The Neo-Babylonian Worldview, Heather Marie Burrow

CGU Theses & Dissertations

To add to our knowledge about a Near Eastern culture, this project examines through textual evidence how the early first millennium BCE Neo-Babylonians thought, reasoned, and wrote in order to partially reconstruct the shared, generally held worldview of the Neo-Babylonian people using the transdisciplinary approach of worldview analysis. Worldviews are what we use to think with, not what we think about. Underlying surficial cultural behaviors are deeper levels of cognition regarding how to reason, perceive the world, prioritize values, prescribe behavior, and explain all of life. Specifically, this work examines the language and logic reflected in the textual archive, believing …

Pasolini’S Ashes: Absence And Excess In Teorema And Salò, Alan Ke Jan 2023

Pasolini’S Ashes: Absence And Excess In Teorema And Salò, Alan Ke

Pomona Senior Theses

Though remembered today for his films, Pasolini’s career emerged from a chiefly literary practice, particularly rooted in the poetry written in his native Friulian dialect. In his multidisciplinary 1965 essay, “The Cinema of Poetry,” Pasolini maps his approach to the written word onto his visual practice of filmmaking. Teorema and Salò, two works that arguably stand out in the director’s oeuvre for their notoriety and (in)explicit sexual content, stand as hallmarks of his achievement of such. The two films borrow structures from allegory, myth, and the poetic form of the canto, merging them with the neurotic consciousnesses of their protagonists, …

Weaving Testimonio And Territory In La Comuna Ancestral Las Tunas, María J Durán González

Pomona Senior Theses

“Nosotras las mujeres ibamos al río a lavar la ropa pero sin con tanto químico y nada de esas cosas. Ahora, pues, cómo ve…” (Tomala, 2023).

The woman’s vignette of La Comuna Ancestral Las Tunas, or the Ancestral Commune of Las Tunas is a testimonio of the territory, yet women’s testimonios are registered separately from the dominant tales of territorial resistance of la Comuna. The analysis of testimonios arises from Chicanx/Latinx feminist studies that center the voices of Chicana/Latina women to form a collective narrative emerging from silences. I aim to interlace Latinx and Latin American geography principles with …

Tools For Collective Thought: Augmenting Collaborative Sensemaking, Jacob Zimmerman Jan 2023

Tools For Collective Thought: Augmenting Collaborative Sensemaking, Jacob Zimmerman

Pomona Senior Theses

As some pioneers of personal computing argue, we have yet to reach the potential that computing offers to enhance our cognition. Some modern scholars of tools for thought give a prerogative to develop transformative tools for thought (Matuschak & Nielsen, 2019), recognizing that the tools we may use enable new thought patterns and thus new cognitive abilities. As cognition is mediated both by our tools and by the minds of others, I evaluate the current state of literature on tools built to support collaborative sensemaking, a domain of collective cognition characterized by various interdependent cognitive processes. To apply and test …

An Examination Of The Food System, Foodscape, Dietary Patterns, And Accolated Health Outcomes Of Salish People Within The Confederated Salish And Kootenai Nation, Joshua William Brown

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Often an individualistic, consumerist strategy is promoted as the solution to decrease the growing prevalence of diet-related diseases. Unfortunately, this logic is ahistorical and apolitical while privileging pathological individualism, capitalistic consumerism, and prevalent diets within the United States. This reasoning fails to recognize diet construction across time by ideologies, policies, and practices. Such an outlook misses the reality that many people cannot escape the grip of the modern, pervasive, ultra-processed food system.

Several Native American populations find themselves plagued with high rates of diet-related diseases. Standard mantra shoulders these communities with their plight, often framing the discourse as personal responsibility …

The term “cultural place-based” is used to ground this research—a specific spiritual place linked to cultural and language-based education within the homelands of the Dakȟóta, Nakoda, and Lakota peoples who inhabit territories in Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Canada: The Native people regard these as their homelands. In the Dakȟóta language, itȟáŋčhaŋ translates to “a leader, boss, person in charge, position of authority, office, management, and political power,” (Lakota Language Consortium, Llc., 2013). The author utilizes the word itȟáŋčhaŋ as the cultural–educational leadership view in creating a cultural place-based model. This research identifies the impact indicators of implementing a …

Estimating Potential Exposure From Abandoned Uranium Mine Sites Through Machine Learning Classification Of Animal Behavior: A Case Study In The Navajo Nation, Christopher Girlamo Jan 2023

Estimating Potential Exposure From Abandoned Uranium Mine Sites Through Machine Learning Classification Of Animal Behavior: A Case Study In The Navajo Nation, Christopher Girlamo

Geography ETDs

Waste from Abandoned Uranium Mines (AUMs) has negatively impacted Indigenous communities for generations. To answer these concerns, this research collaborated with Navajo Nation community members in Cove, AZ and Red Valley, AZ in order to better predict the potential AUM waste exposure their flocks face. A GIS-Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (GIS-MCDA) model quantified potential exposure to AUM waste. Animal behavior was classified based on GPS and accelerometer data utilizing a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The results of both the GIS-MCDA and animal behavior classification modeling was combined into a cumulative exposure potential value for each animal. This study found that livestock …

In this chapter we examine six compelling on-the-ground experiences, which are demonstrating pathways to sustainability, resilience and regeneration. Each case opens a pathway to sustainability in a key sphere of human activity: industry, development, business, agriculture, economy and politics. These experiences are creating new social imaginaries embodied in the practical forms of new politics and economics aimed at profound democratizations of human life, and towards a creative realignment of humans with the rest of the web of life. These social imaginaries are both open and encompassing. They are open in the sense that they can be filled with new possibilities …

New Similarity And Entropy Measures Of Temporal Complex Neutrosophic Set And Its Application In Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Luong Thi Hong Lan, Nguyen Tho Thong, Nguyen Long Giang, Florentin Smarandache, Vo Si Nam, Dinh Van Dzung

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Temporal complex neutrosophic set (TCNS) is an effective structure for resolving information that has uncertain, indeterminate, and timerelated factors in decision-making problems. In the last decade, many researchers focused on estimating the vagueness and ambiguity in knowledge using the theory of neutrosophic sets or extensions of neutrosophic sets. Similarity and entropy measures are valuable tools to measure information with the aim of dealing with real-life multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) problems. However, the existing method did not care or interest in the information measures of TCNS. This paper proposes several new similarity and entropy measures under the TCNS environment. The suggested …

Young people’s skills and attitudes must be observed, studied and evaluated in order to create appropriate models that would serve an educational purpose. In this paper, we propose a decision-making model with the aim to detect certain attitudinal and behavioural patterns of actively engaged young people. The data used in this research resulted from a questionnaire drawn up by a group of researchers from 6 European countries with the aim to investigate the youth’s awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals and their engagement as active agents of development and change at regional level. For the purpose of this study, we …
