Using The Gravity Model To Determine The Impact Of Hallyu On International Students’ Decisions To Attend South Korean Universities, Sojeong Kang Jan 2023

Using The Gravity Model To Determine The Impact Of Hallyu On International Students’ Decisions To Attend South Korean Universities, Sojeong Kang

CMC Senior Theses

This paper attempts to investigate the impact of Hallyu on international students’ decisions to attend South Korean universities using the gravity model. Specifically, the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood (PPML) gravity model was used to study the effect of the Korean Wave. The data was collected in 195 countries from 1999 to 2019. The results show that Hallyu influenced international students’ decisions to choose a South Korean university at a statistically significant level. More specifically, the Korean Wave had a statistically significant impact on international students attending one of the top 5 Korean universities, as well as enrolling in universities located …

The Legacies Of Exclusion: Asian Americans And The California Voting Rights Act, Melinda Ximen Jan 2023

The Legacies Of Exclusion: Asian Americans And The California Voting Rights Act, Melinda Ximen

CMC Senior Theses

A quiet revolution has spread throughout California. Since the California Voting Rights Act became law in 2001, 170 cities have transitioned from at-large to by-district elections, where voters in a geographic district elect one city council member. This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the California Voting Rights Act on Asian American political participation and representation in local elections.

I begin by tracing the roots of discrimination against Asian immigrants and exploring the construction of the pan-Asian identity. I examine the legacies of exclusion on Asian political participation and representation in political offices. I analyze Section 2 of the Voting Rights …

The Pursuit Of A Meaningful Life Through Taoism And The Golden Ratio, Robert Q. Williams Ii Jan 2023

The Pursuit Of A Meaningful Life Through Taoism And The Golden Ratio, Robert Q. Williams Ii

CMC Senior Theses

What constitutes a meaningful life is perhaps the most crucial question we can ask ourselves throughout our lifetime; for what we know, the desire to become knowledgeable of a definitive answer is a journey traveled by humans as early as the 6th century BCE. Nonetheless, history illustrates various paths that brave individuals took to provide guidelines for today’s society to reflect on and choose whether or not they wish to follow them. To portray some of these philosophies in greater detail, we begin by exploring the term “meaning” from a metaphysical perspective and then the categories such philosophies might fall …

Poetic Assemblages: Filipinx Method On The Transpacific, Jon Joey D. Telebrico Jan 2023

Poetic Assemblages: Filipinx Method On The Transpacific, Jon Joey D. Telebrico

CMC Senior Theses

Emergent calls to revise the analytic term transpacific in relation to Indigenous-centered regional formation have emphasized the need to attend to various epistemological and historical distinctions that explain distinct orientations to the Pacific by Indigenous and migrant populations, including diasporic formations. Within these calls, I operationalize poetry, a distinctly aesthetic practice of queer diaspora, as a way of illuminating new forms of relationality that such calls require. Examining works from Jan-Henry Gray, Mark Aguhar, Kimberly Alidio, and Kay Ulanday Barrett, I posit poetry as a crucial element of generating hermeneutic possibility. I further apply postmodern conceptualizations of assemblage theory in …

Performing Grrrlhood: A Lyrical Analysis Of Riot Grrrl Music, Vida Hasson Jan 2023

Performing Grrrlhood: A Lyrical Analysis Of Riot Grrrl Music, Vida Hasson

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the lyrics of the three founding Riot Grrrl bands: Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Heavens to Betsy. I explore how Riot Grrrl bands politicize girlhood to undermine patriarchal authority and empower girls to redefine feminism for themselves. I provide the historical context for Riot Grrrl as a political movement and its cultural impact in the 1990s. In my analysis I connect the lyrics to feminist discourse to demonstrate how Riot Grrrl provided women and girls a platform to discuss feminism and patriarchal oppression. Music has the power to send messages to the masses and Riot Grrrl's legacy proves …

Why Demographics Matter In The Political Representation Of Racial Minority Groups: A Standpoint Epistemology And Visibility Account, Sophie Grossman Jan 2023

Why Demographics Matter In The Political Representation Of Racial Minority Groups: A Standpoint Epistemology And Visibility Account, Sophie Grossman

CMC Senior Theses

Do demographics matter in the political representation of racial minority groups, and if so, how should we understand and enhance our understanding of effective representation? This thesis aims to explore concepts surrounding how to best advocate for historically marginalized communities within the public policymaking process through the lens of standpoint epistemology and visibility. I begin by sharing my personal experiences as a young Asian American woman interested in politics, as well as a case study of two congressional representatives that serve similar constituencies, Representative Katie Porter and Young Kim.

I will then introduce a theoretical approach termed standpoint epistemology, as …

Application Of Sentiment Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Predict Daily Cryptocurrency Price Returns, Edward Wu Jan 2023

Application Of Sentiment Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Predict Daily Cryptocurrency Price Returns, Edward Wu

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the effects of social media sentiment relating to Bitcoin on the daily price returns of Bitcoin and other popular cryptocurrencies by utilizing sentiment analysis and machine learning techniques to predict daily price returns. Many investors think that social media sentiment affects cryptocurrency prices. However, the results of this paper find that social media sentiment relating to Bitcoin does not add significant predictive value to forecasting daily price returns for each of the six cryptocurrencies used for analysis and that machine learning models that do not assume linearity between the current day price return and previous daily price …

The Gay Science: Power On The Body, Population, And Psyche, Nicola Augustyn Jan 2023

The Gay Science: Power On The Body, Population, And Psyche, Nicola Augustyn

CMC Senior Theses

Michel Foucault is a philosopher of power who left behind a legacy of ideas that continue to inspire scholars today. His conceptualization of power is not limited to the figures of kings, monarchs, or the sovereign state. Rather, he regards power as a productive force that shapes subjectivity, manufactures knowledge, and engenders the truth in a particular historical context. In this thesis, I aim to provide a comprehensive account of Foucault’s analysis of power, starting with his refutation of the “repressive hypothesis” that challenges the predominant view of centralized top-down power. Then, I present Foucault’s proposal for redefining power as …

The Application Of Interpersonal Concepts To Reframe Instructor Misbehaviors, Jonathan A. Mendoza Jan 2023

The Application Of Interpersonal Concepts To Reframe Instructor Misbehaviors, Jonathan A. Mendoza

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The research literature surrounding instructor misbehaviors has been largely influenced by two typologies of misbehaviors. Kearney et al. (1991) introduced the first typology of instructor misbehaviors, which included incompetence, offensiveness, and indolence. Goodboy and Myers (2015) later revisited this initial typology, finding additional misbehaviors that reflected changes in the classroom climate, including antagonism and misbehaviors enacted during lectures. Much of the research on instructor misbehaviors utilizes these typologies, using a framework of interpersonal theories as a means of understanding instructor misbehaviors. In my review of the literature, common theories applied included expectancy violations theory, communication privacy management theory, and attribution …

Five Linguistic Methods For Revitalizing Indigenous Laws, Naiomi Walqwan Metallic Jan 2023

Five Linguistic Methods For Revitalizing Indigenous Laws, Naiomi Walqwan Metallic

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Building on the ground-breaking work on the revitalization of Indigenous laws ongoing over the past decade, this article seeks to contribute to our understanding of how Indigenous languages can be used to recover Indigenous laws. It posits that there is not one single linguistic method, but at least five: 1) the ‘Meta-principle’ method; 2) the ‘Grammar as revealing worldview’ method; 3) the ‘Word-part’ method; 4) the ‘Word-clusters’ method; and 5) the ‘Place names’ method. Using the Mìgmaq language to illustrate, the article explains each method and provides examples of how they can be used to inform Indigenous law revitalization. The …

From Cryptocurrencies To Cryptocourts: Blockchain And The Financialization Of Dispute Resolution Platforms, Matthew Dylag Jan 2023

From Cryptocurrencies To Cryptocourts: Blockchain And The Financialization Of Dispute Resolution Platforms, Matthew Dylag

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This paper contributes to emerging discussions of blockchain governance through an analysis of dispute resolution platforms that reimagine justice. We focus specifically on Kleros, a blockchain-enabled dispute resolution platform, that promises to secure, authenticate, and democratize access to justice for the twenty-first century. We advance the concept of cryptocourts whereby jurors, incentivized by accumulating cryptocurrency, rapidly mobilize using principles of on-demand crowdsourcing to resolve disputes. We critique the broader social imaginaries that cryptocourts such as Kleros will result in a more open, trustworthy, transparent, and democratic systems of justice. These platforms instead pose important questions concerning their potential impact …

At Home In The Field, In The Field At Home? Reflections On Power And Fieldwork In Familiar Settings, Arda Bilgen, Anita Fabos Jan 2023

At Home In The Field, In The Field At Home? Reflections On Power And Fieldwork In Familiar Settings, Arda Bilgen, Anita Fabos

Sustainability and Social Justice

Critical epistemologies and methodologies have over time challenged the static and mono-dimensional approaches to fieldwork, allowing researchers to contemplate and conduct their research in spaces of in-betweenness. Despite this important shift, the essentialist idea that both ‘the field’ and ‘home’ in a fieldwork setting must be actual places persists. In this article, we challenge the conceptualization and operationalization of ‘home’ not only as the juxtaposition to ‘the field’, but also as the embodiment of a place in a specific temporality. We argue that the postulation of ‘home’ as a constant disregards the non-predetermined and unpredictable nature of fieldwork relationships that …

Feeling For Deaf Resonance In The Eighteenth Century And Beyond, Jason S. Farr Jan 2023

Feeling For Deaf Resonance In The Eighteenth Century And Beyond, Jason S. Farr

English Faculty Research and Publications

The article examines how resonance has anchored deaf self-representation in the eighteenth century and the present. Through an interdisciplinary framework that foregrounds Deaf and sound studies in the context of the eighteenth century, the article conducts a close reading of writing from two of the first published deaf authors, Pierre Desloges and Charles Shirreff. The argument is that synchronous vibration figures centrally into their sentimental self-fashioning at a time when organized deaf education was first being implemented in Europe. The article also reveals personal stakes in examining resonance alongside John Bulwer's seventeenth-century multisensory model of perception in Philocophus: or the …

Improving the performance and explanations of ML algorithms is a priority for adoption by humans in the real world. In critical domains such as healthcare, such technology has significant potential to reduce the burden on humans and considerably reduce manual assessments by providing quality assistance at scale. In today’s data-driven world, artificial intelligence (AI) systems are still experiencing issues with bias, explainability, and human-like reasoning and interpretability. Causal AI is the technique that can reason and make human-like choices making it possible to go beyond narrow Machine learning-based techniques and can be integrated into human decision-making. It also offers intrinsic …

Using An Interactional Ethnographic Perspective To Explore Insider Perspectives When Working With Previously Archived Records, Michelle Sullivan Jan 2023

Using An Interactional Ethnographic Perspective To Explore Insider Perspectives When Working With Previously Archived Records, Michelle Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Studies in social science fields have examined specific issues in (re)using archived records for qualitative research, though few have focused on the use of private archives in ethnographic research, especially when it comes to foregrounding participant perspectives. In this methodological dissertation I draw on two sets of archived records to demonstrate how an ethnographer can make visible insider knowledge and perspectives when conducting qualitative research with archived records. Utilizing an interactional ethnographic perspective, I construct a dataset for analysis, making my logic visible as I use mapping and transcription, domain and taxonomic analysis, and discourse analysis to foreground insider perspectives …

Migrants, Covid-19, And Italy: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Construction Of And Resistance To Nationalist Discourses, Alessia Barbici Wagner, Theresa Catalano, Bryan Meadows Jan 2023

Migrants, Covid-19, And Italy: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Construction Of And Resistance To Nationalist Discourses, Alessia Barbici Wagner, Theresa Catalano, Bryan Meadows

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Migration has historically been a controversial issue around the world and one that has often been harnessed by people in power (or people hoping to gain power) for their own political agendas. In times of a global pandemic, the scapegoating of migrants has only increased, often rooted in nationalist ideologies which lead to policies and practices that harm migrants and the larger society. The present paper employs multimodal critical discourse analysis to explore how nationalist ideologies supported by right-wing populism are constructed visually and verbally during COVID-19 on Italian social media in regard to migration. We analyze Giorgia Meloni’s (leader …

From Bilingual To Biliteracy: Learning From Families, Stephanie Wessels, Guy Trainin Jan 2023

From Bilingual To Biliteracy: Learning From Families, Stephanie Wessels, Guy Trainin

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study examined the home literacy practices of bilingual families. We were specifically interested in the literacy practices families developed to answer the challenge of biliteracy. Through the home visits and supplying high quality bilingual books, we listened, observed, and gained a deeper understanding of the children and their families which allowed us and educators reading this piece to make connections between children’s home literacy practices and literacy practices in the classroom. After discussing the use of bilingual books, the following four themes emerged from the data: families negotiating biliteracy using bilingual books, the role of Spanish, siblings and literacy …

Impact Of Two Courses On Intercultural Competence Of Undergraduate Students, Lauren Lindmeier, Ryuto Hashimoto, Elizabeth J. Sandell Jan 2023

Impact Of Two Courses On Intercultural Competence Of Undergraduate Students, Lauren Lindmeier, Ryuto Hashimoto, Elizabeth J. Sandell

Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications

Increasing migrations across the world mean leaders at all levels need to become more competent in working across cultures. During the past 30 years, program designers, researchers, and others have investigated intercultural competence (ICC), often described as the capability to accurately understand and adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities. Tertiary education programs (TEP) are accepting these challenges by offering experiences (such as coursework, study away, study abroad, cultural events, etc.) that are intended to produce culturally competent graduates. The teaching and learning experiences described in this study at a midwestern American university may inform others. This study examined archived …

Public Health Law’S Digital Frontier: Addictive Design, Section 230, And The Freedom Of Speech, Matthew B. Lawrence Jan 2023

Public Health Law’S Digital Frontier: Addictive Design, Section 230, And The Freedom Of Speech, Matthew B. Lawrence

Faculty Articles

This Article argues that, even if courts are unpersuaded by the broadest arguments in favor of a public health approach to regulation of addictive design, they should nonetheless reject the platforms’ efforts to make addictive design a public-health-law-free zone. The public health and internet paradigms can be reconciled as a policy matter because addictive design threatens both public health and innovation online. The public health and internet paradigms can also be reconciled as a legal matter be-cause even strong theories of section 230 and the First Amendment, properly understood, leave states a safe harbor in which to regulate much addictive …

Offshore Entanglements, Martin W. Sybblis Jan 2023

Offshore Entanglements, Martin W. Sybblis

Faculty Articles

For decades, scholars have struggled to determine how to deploy laws and legal institutions to spur economic prosperity. But, without knowing which legal rules and institutions to prioritize for a particular social context, the outcomes have been generally unsatisfactory. The case of offshore financial centers provides fresh and compelling new insights into this puzzle. This Article uses the sociological concept of community economic identity (“CEI”) to understand why some offshore financial centers prioritize investments in legal institutions that bolster their offshore finance enterprises while others do not. CEI refers to a community’s shared identity that is linked to a specific …

Genetic Heterogeneity Of Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6pd) Regulatory Region In G6pd Deficient Patients, Lawrence Billy Vasco Djama Jan 2023

Genetic Heterogeneity Of Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6pd) Regulatory Region In G6pd Deficient Patients, Lawrence Billy Vasco Djama

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder caused by either suboptimal function of the G6PD enzyme or instability of the G6PD gene, resulting in insufficient production of the G6PD protein. This study investigates mutations in the regulatory regions of the G6PD gene using Nanopore MinION sequencing, as mutations outside the coding region can also affect G6PD activity. Blood samples from 89 individuals (73 adults and 16 newborns) with G6PD deficiency or intermediate levels but unidentified coding sequence mutations were analyzed. Genomic DNA was screened for mutations, enriched using degenerate oligonucleotide-primed PCR (DOP-PCR), and sequenced using the Oxford MinION platform. Bioinformatic analyzes …

Thai Language Sentiment Analysis With A Hybrid Method On Wangchanberta-Cnn-Bilstm, Kasidhit Suraratchai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Understanding emotions conveyed in text, especially in non-global languages such as Thai, sentiment analysis is particularly important in Thailand. However, this endeavor faces challenges due to variations in text length, which significantly impact sentiment analysis outcomes. Previous research has employed neural network and machine learning models in the process from research [2] and [7], yet each model specializes in different aspects, making comprehensive sentiment analysis coverage unattainable. Recent research [13], has delved into hybrid models like CNN-BiLSTM and BiLSTM-CNN. Although they demonstrate efficacy, their performance still varies across different datasets. For instance, CNN-BiLSTM excels with short sentences by considering surrounding …
