Formulaicity And Contexts: A Multimodal Analysis Of The Japanese Utterance-Final Tteyuu, Michiko Kaneyasu Jan 2023

Formulaicity And Contexts: A Multimodal Analysis Of The Japanese Utterance-Final Tteyuu, Michiko Kaneyasu

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

This study investigates the use of the utterance-final tteyuu [ʔtejɯː], a combination of the quotative particle tte and the verb yuu (‘say’). Although its lexicalized status and utterance-final occurrence are commonly observed, we still know little about its real-time functions. The analysis of 120 examples in varied contexts shows its general usage to clarify something expressed in the prior talk, which is a type of repair practice. More importantly, the analysis reveals how the participants’ understanding of the ongoing speech activity and multimodal cues affect its use and interpretation. Furthermore, some specialized usages appear to motivate activity-bound pragmatic inferencing, leading …

(Transforme Des Mines De Plomb En Or): Webster Et L'Alchimie Du Nous (En Rap), Peter Schulman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Dismantling The Master's House: A Decolonial Blueprint For Internationalization Of Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka, Minghui Hou Jan 2023

Dismantling The Master's House: A Decolonial Blueprint For Internationalization Of Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka, Minghui Hou

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

While critical scholars have attempted to decenter internationalization, limited research has aimed to understand internationalization efforts in the context of the socio-historical particularities of the postcolonial condition. This paper takes a decolonial perspective in the study of internationalization, in light of the Eurocentric tendencies of modernity, whose major manifestation in higher education is neoliberal globalization. We unpack internationalization in the U.S. and examine how it is embedded in and reproduces neoliberalism, racism, and colonialism. Since decolonization is not merely deconstructive but also regenerative, we reconceive what it means to be international and recommend how internationalization can be deployed as a …

Algorithm's Cradle: Commemorating Al-Khwarizmi In The Soviet History Of Mathematics And Cold War Computer Science, Ksenia Tatarchenko Jan 2023

Algorithm's Cradle: Commemorating Al-Khwarizmi In The Soviet History Of Mathematics And Cold War Computer Science, Ksenia Tatarchenko

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This chapter investigates the origin narratives and commemoration practices that came hand in hand with the growing cultural authority of the algorithm after World War II, culminating in celebrations in honor of the 1,200th anniversary of the medieval scholar Abu MODIFIER LETTER LEFT HALF RINGAdallah Muhammad Ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. I first show how al-Khwarizmi's legacy was claimed by Soviet historians of mathematics aiming to construct a history inspired by dialectical materialism, a goal that eventually led to arguments about the distinct, algorithmic character of mathematics in the East. Next, I study how these ideas were appropriated by the international community …

Competition Between Audiovisual Correspondences Aids Understanding Of Interactions Between Auditory And Visual Perception, Laura Getz Jan 2023

Competition Between Audiovisual Correspondences Aids Understanding Of Interactions Between Auditory And Visual Perception, Laura Getz

Psychological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

An audiovisual correspondence (AVC) refers to an observer’s seemingly arbitrary

yet consistent matching of sensory features across the two modalities; for

example, between auditory pitch height and visual height or visual size. Research

on AVCs frequently uses a speeded classification procedure in which participants

are asked to rapidly classify the pitch of a sound accompanied either by a

congruent or an incongruent visual object (e.g., high pitches are congruent with

higher/smaller visual objects and incongruent with lower/larger visual objects).

To investigate the strength of these pitch AVCs (height, size, spatial frequency,

brightness, sharpness), trials where the height AVC competed with …

Culturally Sustaining Disciplinary History Instruction: Teachers Exploring A Possibility Through Practice, Brenda Santos Jan 2023

Culturally Sustaining Disciplinary History Instruction: Teachers Exploring A Possibility Through Practice, Brenda Santos

Open Access Dissertations

Since Wineburg (1999) suggested that history is an act of reasoning rather than remembering, historical thinking (or disciplinary history) has become a widely accepted and practiced vision for history instruction in the United States. Yet evidence suggests that this has not contributed to greater student learning or investment. Some scholars have pointed to a need for culturally sustaining pedagogy in history classrooms, but a vision for such a pedagogy remains unarticulated. This study involves a group of high school teachers in practitioner inquiry aimed at developing both their own learning and knowledge for the field about the practices of culturally …

Study Of The Factor Structure Of Commonly Used Measures Of Adhd, Anxiety, And Depression Among College Students, Emily Shepard Jan 2023

Study Of The Factor Structure Of Commonly Used Measures Of Adhd, Anxiety, And Depression Among College Students, Emily Shepard

Open Access Dissertations

The present study aimed to examine the factor structure of three commonly used assessment methods, the ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), among a sample of college students with and without ADHD with the goal of identifying a potential common inattention factor among the three measures. Additionally, the influences of race and sex on the factor structure was assessed. Participants were recruited from nine different universities in the eastern United States study (N = 456, nADHD =228). Each measure was analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with comparison across ADHD …

Queer And Trans Inclusion In Finnish Teacher Education And Educational Research, Megan C. Jones Jan 2023

Queer And Trans Inclusion In Finnish Teacher Education And Educational Research, Megan C. Jones

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation presents findings from a case study on queer and trans inclusion in a Finnish graduate program in educational research. The study was also able to expand to include experiences and perspectives from teacher education programs at the same university. This research serves an incredibly timely purpose of bringing issues of queer and trans inclusion to light in a context that is marketed as having idealistic educational practices and programs. Overall findings indicate that even in Finland, a country often looked at as an exemplary model of educational reform, there is a lack of queer and trans inclusion in …

Computational Close Reading: A Critique Of Digital Literary Methodology, Damiano Consilvio Jan 2023

Computational Close Reading: A Critique Of Digital Literary Methodology, Damiano Consilvio

Open Access Dissertations

Computational Close Reading intervenes in digital humanities and American literary scholarship to negotiate a significant institutional and disciplinary problem: the devaluation of close reading and interpretation in digital humanities applications to literary studies in favor of more distant modes of reading. To remedy this issue, I pursue a core question meant to bring the literary and the digital into a more perfect confluence, as a demonstration of possibilities meant to run counter to these preconceptions about computational reading: how “close,” if close at all, can digital technologies bring us to the interpretive elements of literary texts? I argue that they …

The Child Vanishes: Justice Scalia's Approach To The Role Of Psychology In Determining Children's Rights And Responsibilities, Aviva Orenstein Jan 2023

The Child Vanishes: Justice Scalia's Approach To The Role Of Psychology In Determining Children's Rights And Responsibilities, Aviva Orenstein

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Article explores how Justice Antonin Scalia’s hostility to psychology, antipathy to granting children autonomous rights, and dismissiveness of children’s interior lives both affected his jurisprudence and was a natural outgrowth of it. Justice Scalia expressed a skeptical, one might even say hostile, attitude towards psychology and its practitioners. Justice Scalia’s cynicism about the discipline and the therapists who practice it is particularly interesting regarding legal and policy arguments concerning children. His love of tradition and his rigid and unempathetic approach to children clash with modern notions of child psychology. Justice Scalia’s attitude towards psychology helps to explain his jurisprudence, …

How The Supreme Court Ghosted The Phosita: Amgen And Legal Constructs In Patent Law, Timothy R. Holbrook, Mark D. Janis Jan 2023

How The Supreme Court Ghosted The Phosita: Amgen And Legal Constructs In Patent Law, Timothy R. Holbrook, Mark D. Janis

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Essay is an invited response to The Ghost in the Patent System: An Empirical Study of Patent Law’s Elusive “Skilled Artisan,” by Professors Laura Pedraza-Fariña and Ryan Whalen. In their piece, Pedraza-Fariña and Ryan Whalen offer an empirical study and use it to argue for a new conception of the Person Having Ordinary Skill in the Art (“PHOSITA”), patent law’s nod to the “reasonable person” construct.

As Professors Pedraza-Fariña and Whalen suggest, the PHOSITA should be understood as a crucial concept in patent law, warranting more scholarly attention. Pedraza-Fariña and Whalen provide that attention. They assert, based on an …

Postcolonial Museums And National Identity In Vietnam, Reese W. Hollister Jan 2023

Postcolonial Museums And National Identity In Vietnam, Reese W. Hollister

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Following the Vietnam Wars, the nation of Vietnam used museums to construct its identity for both national and international audiences. This paper first investigates the colonial origins of Vietnam's museum landscape, stemming from French ethnographic museums in colonial Indochina. Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origins and Spread of Nationalism then serves as the theoretical framework to understand Vietnamese nation's collective, historical memory of the French and American Wars. This paper concludes that the Vietnamese national identity is based on the shared trauma and socialist solidarity that arise from anti-colonial resistance. Museums both construct and preserve this national identity, …

Seqadver: Automatic Payload Construction And Injection In Sequence-Based Android Adversarial Attack, Fei Zhang, Ruitao Feng, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaohong Li, Lianshuan Shi Jan 2023

Seqadver: Automatic Payload Construction And Injection In Sequence-Based Android Adversarial Attack, Fei Zhang, Ruitao Feng, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaohong Li, Lianshuan Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Machine learning has achieved a great success in the field of Android malware detection. In order to avoid being caught by these ML-based Android malware detection, malware authors are inclined to initiate adversarial sample attacks by tampering with mobile applications. Although machine learning has high capability, it lacks robustness against adversarial attacks. Currently, many of the adversarial attacking tools not only inject dead code into target applications, which can never be executed, but also require the injection of many benign features into a malicious APK. This can be easily noticeable by program analysis techniques. In this paper, we propose SeqAdver, …

Character Formation And Its Place In Leadership Development: An Examination Of The Leadership Development Practices Of Advent Christian Churches In North America, Matthew William Larkin

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addressed the lack of understanding of the core components of a character formation strategy that could be employed in a leadership development model by the Advent Christian churches in North America. This qualitative study employed a multiple case study approach examining four Advent Christian churches from within the United States. The Lead Pastors from the four churches were interviewed and members of each church’s leadership team were surveyed in order to collect data regarding how character formation fits within their leadership development strategies. The research also included a review of the biblical book of 1 Timothy examining Paul’s …

The Language Of Record: Finding And Remedying Prejudicial Violations Of Limited English Proficient Individuals’ Due Process Rights In Immigration Proceedings, Anna C. Everett Jan 2023

The Language Of Record: Finding And Remedying Prejudicial Violations Of Limited English Proficient Individuals’ Due Process Rights In Immigration Proceedings, Anna C. Everett

Connecticut Law Review

In immigration court proceedings, court interpreters interpret only those statements made directly to and by the limited English proficient (“LEP”) party. Thus, LEP individuals can only understand what is being spoken to them, not what is being asserted about them. In asylum interviews, applicants must provide their own interpreter, and failure to do so may result in an applicant-caused delay and, ultimately, a denial of work authorization. In immigration proceedings, the LEP party’s livelihood, family unity, and freedom from persecution and death are at stake. The message that the U.S. legal system makes clear is that it does not value …

Traditionalism Rising, Marc O. Degirolami Jan 2023

Traditionalism Rising, Marc O. Degirolami

Scholarly Articles

Constitutional traditionalism is rising. From due process to free speech, religious liberty, the right to keep and bear arms, and more, the Court made clear in its 2021 term that it will follow a method that is guided by “tradition.”

This paper is in part an exercise in naming: the Court’s 2021 body of work is, in fact, thoroughly traditionalist. It is therefore a propitious moment to explain just what traditionalism entails. After summarizing the basic features of traditionalism in some of my prior work and identifying them in the Court’s 2021 term decisions, this paper situates these recent examples …

Development Disrupted: The Case Of Afghanistan Taliban 2.0 And Lessons Learned About Foreign Aid Management, Mohammad Q. Shah, Stephen A. Rosenbaum Jan 2023

Development Disrupted: The Case Of Afghanistan Taliban 2.0 And Lessons Learned About Foreign Aid Management, Mohammad Q. Shah, Stephen A. Rosenbaum

Washington International Law Journal

In August 2021, the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan marked the end of twenty years of attempts at liberal state building and development in that country. Despite spending trillions of dollars to create a capable, functional government, the Afghan government could not last even a week without US military and financial support. After its collapse, the Taliban immediately took over Afghanistan for the second time (Taliban 2.0). This turn of events resulted in the discontinuance of foreign aid and immediate downturn of the Afghan economy. Since then, there has been debate, among other issues, over why and how the foreign …

Preservice Teacher Intersectional Awareness: A Qualitative Inquiry, Lindsey Pike Jan 2023

Preservice Teacher Intersectional Awareness: A Qualitative Inquiry, Lindsey Pike

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the intersectional awareness of preservice general education teachers as experienced through an internship in an urban, Title 1 funded school. Intersectionality Theory (Boveda, 2016; Crenshaw, 1990; Dill & Zambrana, 2009; Jones & Wijeyesinghe, 2011) was used as a theoretical framework to inform this study. A descriptive phenomenological design (Creswell, 2013; Moustakas, 1994) was used to examine preservice teachers' (PSTs)lived experiences within their teacher preparation program courses and internship. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with preservice general education teachers. Data analysis was completed using Colaizzi's (1978) seven-step process as outlined by …

Qatar V. Uae-- The Weight Of Words, Samantha H. Hughes Jan 2023

Qatar V. Uae-- The Weight Of Words, Samantha H. Hughes

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

In 2021, the International Court of Justice decided, in Qatar v. United Arab Emirates, that the term "national origin" does not include current nationality as used in the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination ("CERD"). While the Court's decision is supported by various legal arguments, the majority's approach seems to stray from practices regarding interpreting ambiguous terms, and is contradictory to some of its earlier opinions. This Note uses CERD, other International Court of Justice opinions, and the dissenting opinions to the Qatar v. United Arab Emirates decision to critically analyze the strength of …

What’S Law Got To Do With It? How The Degree Of Legalization Affects The Durability Of Post-Conflict Autonomy Agreements, Felix Schulte, Gene Carolan Jan 2023

What’S Law Got To Do With It? How The Degree Of Legalization Affects The Durability Of Post-Conflict Autonomy Agreements, Felix Schulte, Gene Carolan

Articles

Research has identified several factors that impact the sustainability of post-conflict territorial autonomy arrangements (TAA), including previous levels of violence, economic development in a given territory, or the strategic importance thereof. We argue that a hitherto neglected variable lies in the legal form of the autonomy agreement – that is, the degree to which it has been ‘legalized’ by the language and processes prescribed in the agreement. Based on a qualitative evaluation, we assess the legalization degree of 236 TAA signed between 1990 and 2019. Survival analyses and Cox regression models show that a higher degree of legalization has a …

Equal Protection Against Policing, Evan D. Bernick Jan 2023

Equal Protection Against Policing, Evan D. Bernick

College of Law Faculty Publications

A White police officer pins his knee against a Black man’s neck. The Black man lies prone. He says he can’t move. He says he can’t breathe. He says he’s through. He pleads for his mama. He moans, gasps, and writhes. Blood runs out of his nose and mouth. After eight minutes and forty-six seconds, George Floyd is dead.

Videos of the killing went viral. All four of the Minneapolis Police Department officers who arrested Floyd for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store were fired. Derek Chauvin—who held his knee to Floyd’s neck—was initially charged by …

Redefining Paternalistic Practices In Women’S Health: How Dysfunctional Trust Relationships Impact Medical Autonomy Of Female Patients In The Contemporary Clinical Setting, Lauren K. O'Dell

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Utilizing Trudy Govier’s (1997) conception of social trust, this dissertation will provide a framework for understanding trust in healthcare relationships and highlight some of the ways that unequal power distribution and dependency, poorly defined roles, and institutions complicate trust between women and their providers. This framework will also explain how distrust, especially prejudicial distrust, leads to paternalistic attitudes on the part of providers. Paternalism limits patient autonomy because medical autonomy is constitutively relational. This means that insofar as distrust causes paternalism, it also damages autonomy. Through negative outcomes, this lack of autonomy can cause patients to distrust healthcare, which can …
