A Content Analysis Of A Black Plus-Size Woman And Social Media Influencer Making Policy Change: Through The Lens Of Instagram, Tamika Nicole Johnson
A Content Analysis Of A Black Plus-Size Woman And Social Media Influencer Making Policy Change: Through The Lens Of Instagram, Tamika Nicole Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines how a Black plus-size woman social media influencer, @CurvyNyome, encounters censorship, dehumanization, sexualization, and body-shaming on Instagram. Social media, such as Instagram, have formed communication channels and opened avenues for people to be expressive, positive, hostile, or indifferent. The long history of the sexualization and dehumanization of Black women is rooted in centuries of oppression, which led the recipients of oppression to inadvertently adopt dehumanizing beliefs and behaviors (Burnette et al., 2017). The study’s significance is that Black plus-size women are often made to believe and feel that their body is not beautiful. Black women have struggled …
The Predictive Ability Of Early Reading Indicators And Spelling On Oral Reading Fluency, Jessie Mackenzie Reed
The Predictive Ability Of Early Reading Indicators And Spelling On Oral Reading Fluency, Jessie Mackenzie Reed
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study was to explore the predictive ability of beginning of the year scores of Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF), Oral Reading Fluency (ORF), and scores from a Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI) at mid-year ORF scores for second-grade students in a rural school district in central Pennsylvania. Because reading skills are strongly linked to positive academic and life outcomes, the identification of students who may have reading difficulties is a critical task for schools. Alphabetic and orthographic knowledge is central to reading development and essential for educators to understand the reading aptitude of students. This …
Language Modeling Using Image Representations Of Natural Language, Seong Eun Cho
Language Modeling Using Image Representations Of Natural Language, Seong Eun Cho
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents training of an end-to-end autoencoder model using the transformer, with an encoder that can encode sentences into fixed-length latent vectors and a decoder that can reconstruct the sentences using image representations. Encoding and decoding sentences to and from these image representations are central to the model design. This method allows new sentences to be generated by traversing the Euclidean space, which makes vector arithmetic possible using sentences. Machines excel in dealing with concrete numbers and calculations, but do not possess an innate infrastructure designed to help them understand abstract concepts like natural language. In order for a …

Transition To Higher Education In A College Assistance Migrant Program: Students’ Perception Of Purpose, Mark R. Lane-Holbert
Transition To Higher Education In A College Assistance Migrant Program: Students’ Perception Of Purpose, Mark R. Lane-Holbert
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The 21st century world is increasingly globalized and interconnected, and migration is a reality that substantially impacts the US educational system, and often requires specialized services for migrant students to successfully transition to higher education. While higher education has many benefits, it also presents inherent risks and challenges for students from migrant families, whose academic and life experiences may be vastly different from traditional college students. Federal collegiate transition programs like the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) recognize this and aim to support students holistically throughout their transition to higher education. Such programs are in continual search of effective ways …

In Knowledge We Trust(Ed): A Case Study In Abolition Theatre, Misty Dawn Saribal
In Knowledge We Trust(Ed): A Case Study In Abolition Theatre, Misty Dawn Saribal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation argues for performance art’s role(s) in growing abolition on higher education campuses. After defining abolition’s intersections with higher education, and discussing why performance is often diminished and overlooked, I examine a university abolitionist performance I co-directed that highlighted prison labor on our university’s campus titled ‘In Knowledge We Trusted: Red Tape, White Institutions, and Blue Students.’ A rationale for abolition performance and an abolition performance praxis is detailed with attention to avoiding the pitfalls of authenticity policing in prison abolition and genre policing in abolitionist art. Conclusions about how the performance contributed to and embodied abolition politics and …

Factors Associated With The Quality Of Life Of Nursing Home Residents During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study, M Hoben, E Dymchuk, K Corbett, R Devkota, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Objectives Quality of life (QoL) of nursing home (NH) residents is critical, yet understudied, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to examine whether COVID-19 outbreaks, lack of access to geriatric professionals, and care aide burnout were associated with NH residents' QoL. Design Cross-sectional study (July to December 2021). Setting and Participants We purposefully selected 9 NHs in Alberta, Canada, based on their COVID-19 exposure (no or minor/short outbreaks vs repeated or extensive outbreaks). We included data for 689 residents from 18 care units. Methods We used the DEMQOL-CH to assess resident QoL through video-based care aide interviews. Independent …

The Secondary Impact Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of The Experiences Of Family Members, James Gamgee, Jessica Runacres, Alyson Norman, Priyanka Pradhan
School of Psychology
This study seeks to contribute to our understanding of the lived experiences of family members and friends of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study employed an interpretative phenomenological approach, enabling family members and friends to identify and reflect upon the factors they themselves considered most significant about the impact of TBI on someone close to them, and how this experience has affected their own lives and their relationship with the TBI survivor. Eleven participants, two males and nine females aged 22–79, were from the United Kingdom. Several strong and interconnected themes emerged from the interviews, clustering into four …

Influence Of Parental Voice Across Modalities In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brooke Gallo, Preye Ford
Influence Of Parental Voice Across Modalities In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brooke Gallo, Preye Ford
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Premature infants are at risk for developing delays including impaired social language, linguistics, and cognitive competencies compared to infants who were born full term. This is primarily due to necessary medical and environmental factors. Premature infants can experience long periods of early separation from their parents and exposed to unnatural noxious auditory stimuli ( i.e. machine alarms). The purpose of this scoping review of the literature, is to determine if early consistent exposure to the parental voice in any communication capacity, including reading, singing, or speaking tasks, decease developmental delays in infants.
Scoping review revealed that early exposure to parental …

Using elaboration of likelihood model, this study examines how syntactic structure (structural and lexical simplicity) and nonverbal cues (smiling and professional attire) interact to influence crowdfunding performance. By studying 209 crowdfunding projects, we show that both structural simplicity and lexical simplicity are positively related to crowdfunding performance. Further, professional attire strengthens the simplicity and performance relationship. However, smiling shows mixed effects.
The Influence Of Native Language And Sentence Form On Memory Of Motion Events, Stephanie L. Lopez
The Influence Of Native Language And Sentence Form On Memory Of Motion Events, Stephanie L. Lopez
LSU Master's Theses
This study utilized four experiments to investigate the extent to which native language influences memory in accordance with linguistic relativity. In Experiment 1, monolingual English speakers and Spanish/English bilinguals were divided into a verbal encoding condition and a verbal suppression encoding condition and watched motion events of low or high physical salience. Participants engaged in a recognition memory task followed by an event memory similarity judgment task. In Experiment 2, native monolingual English speakers were divided into an English-like (or manner-on-verb) description group, a Spanish-like (or path-on-verb) description group, mimicking the language groups of Experiment 1 respectively, and a verbal …

Times Of Crisis: A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of U.S. And Mexican Presidential Rhetoric, Kassandra Gonzalez-Ramos
LSU Master's Theses
Language is a communicative tool that in the possession of politicians holds the power to be persuasive and aggressive, empowering and uniting, or disruptive and dividing. Previous research has relied on numerous methodological approaches to analyze political discourse from different viewpoints to reveal the manner in which politicians as part of political institutions transform and manipulate language. The current investigation performs a critical discourse analysis (CDA) based on the framework developed by Van Dijk (1993,1997) in order to demonstrate the speech act realization in a total of 14 political speeches delivered by American presidents Biden, Trump, and Obama and Mexican …

Pipeline Coordination: The Importance Of Properly Defining An Arbitral Tribunal’S Authority In Gas Price Review Arbitration, Aikaterini (Katerina) Karamousalidou
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
Unprecedented events in international gas commerce have significantly increased gas pricing disputes. International arbitration, as a neutral and binding process, offers a plethora of advantages to international players of the energy industry who are interested in resolving their disputes in an efficient way. However, gas price review is extremely complex. In particular, a gas price review clause is what delineates an arbitrator’s mandate and hence, arbitrators must be prudent to pay careful attention to act within the boundaries of their authority. Failure to do so may result in the award being set aside. This paper addresses: (1) the determination of …

Does SPH Curricula Promote ‘Health Equity’, Reproduce Injustice, or both?
The social justice movements of recent years (preceded by [generations of] insurmountable suffering) have facilitated a collective recognition of the systemic effects of racism and epistemic violence. Despite the ambitious and well-intentioned vision of “health equity” as defined by epidemiologic scholarship - progress is slow and injustices prevail.
Students, scholars, and researchers of ‘Public Health’ are uniquely positioned to imagine and create innovative ways of understanding and addressing the harmful inequities and injustices perpetuated by white settler colonialism. I argue that Academic institutions delivering Public Health education are uniquely positioned …

Between Faith And Nation: The Complexities Of Jewish Identity In Interwar Austria, Sarah E. Townsend
Between Faith And Nation: The Complexities Of Jewish Identity In Interwar Austria, Sarah E. Townsend
Honors College Theses
During the period between the First and Second World Wars, the people of the newly established Austrian Republic faced many changes: the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Habsburg Monarchy, economic hardships during and following the First World War, and the question of German ethnic nationalism and unification with Germany. The question of national identity was relevant to the entire Austrian population and Austrians had to make an important decision about their nationality: Austrian or German? For Austrian Jews, the dilemma was more complicated. Zionism promoted the idea of Jewish statehood and a solely Jewish identity. This thesis explores the …

Musical Evidence For Low Boundary Tones In Ancient Greek, Dieter Gunkel
Musical Evidence For Low Boundary Tones In Ancient Greek, Dieter Gunkel
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
Several scholars have suggested that in ancient Greek there was a low boundary tone at the end of a relatively small prosodic constituent such as a clitic group or maximal prosodic word. The boundary tone may phonologically motivate some puzzling pitch-accentual phenomena in the language. One is the diachronic pitch-peak retraction that led to the circumflex pitch accent (HL) on penultimate syllables (the “sōtêra rule”). Another is the intonational phrase-internal downstepping or deletion of a word-final acute accent (H); that conversion of an acute to a grave accent is known as “lulling” or “koímēsis”. If such a low …

Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small …
