I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman Apr 2023

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman

Student Work

One deep-seated belief in writing, especially writing instruction, is that there is no place for identity and personal pronouns in pieces that are professional and academic. Students are taught this principle as early as elementary school. However, identity can be used in academic writing as a tool to emphasize credibility on certain topics and can shape writing, whether intentionally or not. Anyone’s writing can benefit from a bit of the author’s perspective, but there is an even deeper need for a diverse range of identities in academia. I intend to discuss how ‘objective’ papers are often read as if written …

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins Apr 2023

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins

Student Work

Transgender asylum seekers, escaping countries that would otherwise sentence them to death for their gender expression, are forced to express traits to prove their gender identity to asylum officials in order to attain relative safety. Anti-homosexual laws exist in over 70 countries, a majority of the concentration of these laws are in Africa and west Asia (ilga.org). South Africa exists as a bit of a gay haven in the sense that there are constitutional protections for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people and, according to ILGA (The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association), the only country in Africa …

Resampling Generative Models: An Empirical Study, Prachi Ramesh Jadhav Apr 2023

Resampling Generative Models: An Empirical Study, Prachi Ramesh Jadhav

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite Generative AI’s rapid growth (e.g., ChatGPT, GPT-4, Dalle-2, etc.), generated data from these models may have an inherent bias. This bias can propagate to downstream tasks e.g., classification, and data augmentation that utilize data from generative AI models. This thesis empirically evaluates model bias in different deep generative models like Variational Autoencoder and PixelCNN++. Further, we resample generated data using importance sampling to reduce bias in the generated images based on a recently proposed method for bias-reduction using probabilistic classifiers. The approach is developed in the context of image generation and we demonstrate that importance sampling can produce better …

Environment and Society Student Research

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …

Neutrosophic Marcos In Decision Making On Smart Manufacturing System, Nivetha Martin, Said Broumi, S. Sudha, R. Priya Apr 2023

Neutrosophic Marcos In Decision Making On Smart Manufacturing System, Nivetha Martin, Said Broumi, S. Sudha, R. Priya

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Business firms prefer software-based smart manufacturing systems to monitor and supervise all production activities in a decentralized manner. The choice of software decides the degree of manufacturing robustness. This paper proposes a neutrosophic-based MARCOS (Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to COmpromise Solution) method of MCDM with single-valued triangular neutrosophic numbers to solve the software selection problem. The proposed neutrosophic method is applied to hypothetical data to test the efficacy of the method. The results obtained using the proposed method are compared with crisp, fuzzy, and intuitionistic data representations, and suitable inferences are acquired. The proposed method has several industrial …

Inside The Hirak: The Dynamics Of A Mass Movement For Social Justice And Human Rights, Abdelkader Berrahmoun

International Journal of Human Rights Education

In 2019, Algeria witnessed the emergence of the Hirak mass movement: a pro-democracy uprising marked by epic nationwide demonstrations and trans-formative public dialogue. Hundreds of thousands of Algerians mobilized to protest social injustices and political corruption, educate each other about their common rights, and articulate their collective goals. Through the Hirak’s shared platform, people from all walks of life took to the podium to galvanize the masses through ideas and action. The Algerian Hirak was a form of public pedagogy; a grassroots expression of human rights education. Why is the Hirak so important in the history of global social movements? …

Zapatista Seed Pedagogics: Beyond Rights, Creating A Decolonizing Co-Education, Charlotte María Saenz Apr 2023

Zapatista Seed Pedagogics: Beyond Rights, Creating A Decolonizing Co-Education, Charlotte María Saenz

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This article inquires into a pedagogics that seeds a larger co-educational process outside of the Zapatista movement’s autonomous territories. A Zapatista Seed Pedagogics (ZSP) is theorized as an educational, political, and ethical process that confronts oppressive power relations at all levels, growing a collective political and educational subject. While still asserting the need for Indigenous rights within a neocolonial context, a ZSP transcends a human rights education framework to insist on the inherent value of all beings and their birthright to a dignified life. Drawing on a qualitative transgeographic study conducted through interviews with pro-Zapatista interlocutors who are themselves involved …

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite Apr 2023

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The instructional practices of the engineering design process and culturally responsive pedagogy have each garnered national attention and multiple decades of research. Findings from the respective literature bases call for educators and policymakers to integrate these two pedagogical approaches into K-12 classroom instruction. Scholars have argued that this integration would improve student engagement and academic achievement. There is a significant amount of research that supports the positive student outcomes associated with each approach, yet there remains a dearth of literature that addresses the integration of these two practices into the science and mathematics content areas. The movement around educational reform …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There are growing concerns relating to current Nigerian agricultural food production practices and its impact on human nutrition. There is mounting evince that our current food system is responsible for diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Agricultural literacy is possessing knowledge and understanding of our food and fiber system. For citizens to be minimally educated about agricultural practices, agricultural literacy is important for both the individual and for the industries. An individual must be well informed to make responsible choices in matters of food and fiber. Improving agricultural literacy by understanding the needs of the society, as it relates to …

Expanding Carceral Frontiers: The 100-Mile Border Zone And Constituting Latinx Political Subjectivity, Elyse Y. Hatch-Rivera Apr 2023

Expanding Carceral Frontiers: The 100-Mile Border Zone And Constituting Latinx Political Subjectivity, Elyse Y. Hatch-Rivera

Political Science Honors Projects

The thesis has two interrelated concerns. The first explores the emergence of the 100-mile border zone in order to study how the U.S. has expanded its borders inward and redefined notions of national security and carcerality. The second will define the 100-mile border as a carceral frontier that has emerged from previous years of racial security operations such as “Operation Wetback” in 1953. Moreover, I will demonstrate how the 100-mile border zone, a carceral frontier, blends the logic of security and the carceral in order to create a space of total state control. This inward turn of the 100-mile border …

The Genomics Of Autism-Related Genes Il1rapl1 And Il1rapl2: Insights Into Their Cortical Distribution, Cell-Type Specificity, And Developmental Trajectories, Jacob Weaver

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychiatric disorders have a significant impact on modern society. These disorders affect a large percentage of the population: schizophrenia has a world-wide prevalence of 1% and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affects 1 in 59 school-aged children in the US. There is substantial evidence that most neuropsychiatric disorders have a genetic component. Thus, with the advent of high throughput sequencing much effort has gone into identifying genetic variants associated with these disorders. The emerging picture from these studies is a complex one where hundreds of genes with small effects interact with a varied landscape of common variants to result in disease. …

The Trouble Department: May Brotherton And The Agency Of Women Cutters In The Early Film Industry, Rachael Camp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the pioneering film editor May Brotherton as a case study to explore how studio industrialization in pre and early Hollywood influenced the contributions of women post-production workers. It considers why film editing, once categorized as a feminized sector, was recategorized after its creative power and financial implications were realized. As a result, we may become aware of the systematic gender discrimination in studio film, as well as an extremely important but unrecognized editor. Incorporating evidence from primary and secondary sources on early film industry development, including testimony, archival artifacts, and interviews with Brotherton’s descendants. The methodology is …

A Deep Learning Approach To Extractive Text Summarization Using Knowledge Graph And Language Model, Yichen Gao Apr 2023

A Deep Learning Approach To Extractive Text Summarization Using Knowledge Graph And Language Model, Yichen Gao

Theses and Dissertations

Extractive summarization has been widely studied, but the summaries generated by most current extractive summarization works usually disregard the article structure of the source document. Furthermore, the produced summaries are sometimes not representative sentences in the article. In this thesis, we propose an extractive summarization algorithm with knowledge graph enhancement that leverages both the source document and a knowledge graph to predict the most representative sentences for the summary. The aid of knowledge graphs enables deep learning models with pre-trained language models to focus on article structure information in the process of generating extractive summaries. Our proposed method has an …

Studies have shown that 30–40% of students fail or drop out of the introductory programming course. Furthermore, enrollment in CS programs has lately shown a significant increase, making it difficult to provide personalized attention. In this context, the work in this dissertation is an effort toward developing Self-Explanation Based Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for Code Comprehension, which offers one-to-one tutoring to enhance learners' source code comprehension skills. Self-Explanation Based ITS uses self-explanation as a learning strategy. Although self-explanation has shown a positive effect in different science domains such as biology, and math, it has been studied minimally for code comprehension; …

The Effects Of Classroom Type On Anxiety, Motivation, Interaction, And Vocabulary Development In A Novice Level Tblt Course For Young Learners, Hannah Pitner Apr 2023

The Effects Of Classroom Type On Anxiety, Motivation, Interaction, And Vocabulary Development In A Novice Level Tblt Course For Young Learners, Hannah Pitner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Relatively little research has considered how tasks are performed and experienced by students in different types of classrooms. Research shows that innovative classroom designs can lead to higher levels of cognitive engagement, connections between form and meaning, and more diverse forms of input (Schmidt, 1990; Svalberg, 2012) and are particulary beneficial for young learners (Nunan 2013). While significant research has explored TBLT, very little has looked at its effectiveness with young learners, particularly in the foreign language classroom. (Butler & Zeng 2014, Ellis 2020). The present quasi experimental mixed methods study examines the effects of the classroom setting on interaction …

Multi-Modal Knowledge Graph Inference Via Media Convergence And Logic Rule, Feng Lin, Dongmei Li, Wenbin Zhang, Dongsheng Shi, Yuanzhou Jiao, Qianzhong Chen, Yiying Lin, Wentao Zhu Apr 2023

Multi-Modal Knowledge Graph Inference Via Media Convergence And Logic Rule, Feng Lin, Dongmei Li, Wenbin Zhang, Dongsheng Shi, Yuanzhou Jiao, Qianzhong Chen, Yiying Lin, Wentao Zhu

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Media convergence works by processing information from different modalities and applying them to different domains. It is difficult for the conventional knowledge graph to utilise multi-media features because the introduction of a large amount of information from other modalities reduces the effectiveness of representation learning and makes knowledge graph inference less effective. To address the issue, an inference method based on Media Convergence and Rule-guided Joint Inference model (MCRJI) has been proposed. The authors not only converge multi-media features of entities but also introduce logic rules to improve the accuracy and interpretability of link prediction. First, a multi-headed self-attention approach …
