Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
The Internet of things (IoT) is one of those emerging technologies, which are going to rule the world in the next few decades. The IoT environment not only enables Human to Machine interaction but also fosters Machine to Machine connectivity. Numerous IoT devices have poor security and insufficient computing power, making them prime targets for hackers. The IoT environment uses lightweight cryptographic techniques to address security requirements. Another security method for IoT devices is steganography. In the contemporary Internet era, the ability to secure private information is crucial, and steganography offers this capability. Due to its great ability to conceal …

A Review Of Smart Structures Vibration Control Strategies, Imad Z. Gheni, Hm Alwan2, Hussein M. Khafaji
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
The expert system and artificial intelligence are still important modern technologies. A structure can modify its behavior under dynamic stresses by using active controls. The term "intelligent" or "smart" structures refers to these self-modifying structures. The structural engineering discipline may experience a reVolution thanks to smart structure technologies. Particularly for huge structures, It is anticipated to have major effects. Effects with regard to the avoidance of fatalities and damage to the structure and its contents, particularly with regard to huge buildings that have thousands of elements. An efficient control algorithm to establish the magnitude of the actual forces to be …

The Marginalised Nativism Strikes Back: Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Afd Party’S Anti-Refugee Campaign In Germany, Raihanna Athaayaa Ari Sudjono, Aditya Batara Gunawan
Jurnal Politik
Born as a Eurosceptic party in 2013, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Party shifted its agenda to anti-refugee and anti-Islamic issues after the 2015 refugee crisis in Europe. This shift is evident in the discourse of traditional campaign posters distributed during the 2017 federal election in Germany. This article aims to map and conduct a critical discourse analysis of the refugee crisis issues constructed by the AfD Party through traditional campaign posters. The author argues that the AfD Party's anti-refugee and anti-Islam discourse is significantly influenced by factors such as interests, ideology, and social, economic, and political conditions. This research …

IMPORTANCE: Spanish-speaking participants are underrepresented in clinical trials, limiting study generalizability and contributing to ongoing health inequity. The Comparison of Outcomes of Antibiotic Drugs and Appendectomy (CODA) trial intentionally included Spanish-speaking participants.
OBJECTIVE: To describe trial participation and compare clinical and patient-reported outcomes among Spanish-speaking and English-speaking participants with acute appendicitis randomized to antibiotics.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study is a secondary analysis of the CODA trial, a pragmatic randomized trial comparing antibiotic therapy with appendectomy in adult patients with imaging-confirmed appendicitis enrolled at 25 centers across the US from May 1, 2016, to February 28, 2020. The trial …

Stack Overflow, the world's largest software Q&A (SQA) website, is facing a significant traffic drop due to the emergence of generative AI techniques. ChatGPT is banned by Stack Overflow after only 6 days from its release. The main reason provided by the official Stack Overflow is that the answers generated by ChatGPT are of low quality. To verify this, we conduct a comparative evaluation of human-written and ChatGPT-generated answers. Our methodology employs both automatic comparison and a manual study. Our results suggest that human-written and ChatGPT-generated answers are semantically similar, however, human-written answers outperform ChatGPT-generated ones consistently across multiple aspects, …

Real: A Representative Error-Driven Approach For Active Learning, Cheng Chen, Yong Wang, Lizi Liao, Yueguo Chen, Xiaoyong Du
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Given a limited labeling budget, active learning (al) aims to sample the most informative instances from an unlabeled pool to acquire labels for subsequent model training. To achieve this, al typically measures the informativeness of unlabeled instances based on uncertainty and diversity. However, it does not consider erroneous instances with their neighborhood error density, which have great potential to improve the model performance. To address this limitation, we propose Real, a novel approach to select data instances with Representative Errors for Active Learning. It identifies minority predictions as pseudo errors within a cluster and allocates an adaptive sampling budget for …
Chinese Visions Of Self And Other: The International Politics Of Noses, William A. Callahan
Chinese Visions Of Self And Other: The International Politics Of Noses, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
How does China view the world? While much has been written about how China's international relations are best seen as intercultural relations that do not exclude the Other, this article examines how self/Other relations are visualized in terms of the human face in China, in particular through iconic images that construct the Chinese self with and against foreigners with large noses. It employs interpretivist methods to consider the interplay of social relations and international relations in order to see how ‘external appearance’ and ‘external relations’ inform each other in Chinese theory and practice. It mobilizes the classical Chinese concept ‘deep-set …

Opposing lawyers frame the facts of a case to serve their client, craft leading questions, and exert pressure on the witness to go along with their desired answer. To counter this, counsel for the witness must anticipate this and prepare the witness to tacitly ask themselves before answering such questions: whether a frame is being employed?; and if so, they should respond in their own words, rather than in the terms put to them by the opposing lawyer. Courts might counsel themselves to employ similar caution when incorporating discussion taken from politics or related policy debate. They may not be …
