Let's Speculate About It: When And Why Consumers Want To Discuss Mystery Products, Aleksandra Kovacheva, Hillary Wiener
Let's Speculate About It: When And Why Consumers Want To Discuss Mystery Products, Aleksandra Kovacheva, Hillary Wiener
Marketing Faculty Scholarship
Research suggests that mystery products can be appealing to consumers and can motivate interest and purchase. In this paper, we examine a different benefit of these offerings – their effect on driving conversation. We propose that such products can prompt a conversation due to their ability to motivate joint speculation, or the process of thinking about possible resolutions of the uncertainty with others. We define this novel driver of conversation, delineate it from related constructs, and situate it in the literature. We then provide initial evidence for the proposed theory in seven studies (n = 2,835), demonstrating that mystery …

Marginalized Students Need To Write About Their Lives: Meaningful Assignments For Analysis And Affirmation, Nancy G. Mack
Marginalized Students Need To Write About Their Lives: Meaningful Assignments For Analysis And Affirmation, Nancy G. Mack
English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications
Abstract: The bias against personal experience manifests in writing courses as privileging the citation of scholars, fearing emotional writing, and equating argumentation with democratic ideals. To value the lives and knowledges of marginalized students, the curricular goals, assignments, and activities for writing courses needs to be reconsidered. Culturally sustaining pedagogy explores, extends, and examines the experiences of students. Meaningful, experience-based, narrative writing assignments are suggested: memoir essays, ethnographic research reports, and multigenre interview projects. Analysis activities challenge students to examine a chosen experience through several scholarly lenses. By adding complex analysis to their writing, students gain a challenging new experience …

Functional Communication Training In Inclusive School Settings For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: A Literature Review, Andy B. Masud, Virginia L. Walker, Megan E. Carpenter, Ashley Anderson
Publications
Functional communication training (FCT) is a well-established, evidence-based practice used to address challenging behavior among individuals across settings, ages, and disability categories. However, the research is limited on the implementation of FCT in inclusive school settings for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The purpose of this review was to summarize FCT intervention studies implemented in inclusive K–12 school settings for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We synthesized studies to summarize study characteristics, quality, and intervention effectiveness. Our findings suggest that FCT was most often implemented as part of a multi-component intervention package and delivered by education team members. …

Family And School Partnership To Build Homeplace And Protect Black Autistic Joy, Lachan V. Hannon, Michael D. Hannon
Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works
Researchers acknowledge how the experiences of Black autistic students and their families are virtually absent from educational research and research about autistic people. This chapter offers insights and perspectives from the parents of a Black autistic child, using hooks’ construct of homeplace to understand the need for safety in school spaces. Drawing on tenets of self-study and co-autoethnographic methodologies, the authors provide reflections and recommendations on the ways school personnel can help create homeplace to nurture and protect Black autistic joy through their singular and shared narratives.
The Water Question: Coverage, Conflict, And Confusion In Negaunee During The Typhoid Fever Epidemic Of 1889, Sam Brink
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
Epidemic disease and the strain it places upon communities is the source of crucial insight into the structures and intricacies of community life. This assessment of the course of the 1889 Negaunee typhoid fever epidemic uncovers a variety of perspectives on the treatment and mitigation of the disease between August and November of 1889 in a diverse and densely-populated Iron Range town. These perspectives, presented primarily in the contemporary medical literature and the pages of The Weekly Mining Journal newspaper, illustrate a complex state of contention and conflict between Negaunee area residents and state health authorities. Investigation of community responses …

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This study delves into urban Jewish praxis and its impact on the production of urban space in three literary texts composed within the first four decades of the 20th century: the novella “Min HaMeitzar” [“Out of the Depths”] (1908) by Hebrew writer Yosef Haim Brenner, the novel Nokh alemen [“The End of Everything”] (1913) by Yiddish writer Dovid Bergelson, and the novel Hiob: Roman eines einfachen Mannes [“Job: The Story of a Simple Man”] (1930) by German-Jewish writer Joseph Roth. The literary readings presented in this study strive to elucidate the literary production of urban space as a means of …
The Dark Side Of Iconicity: How Controversial Icons Become Lightning Rods For Passionate Audiences, Vanessa Kristin Bittner
The Dark Side Of Iconicity: How Controversial Icons Become Lightning Rods For Passionate Audiences, Vanessa Kristin Bittner
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation delves into the dynamic interplay between controversial public figures, audiences, and the creation of icons today. Through three distinct articles, it explores how icons emerge and evolve within contentious political discourse. The first article introduces the concept of "dialectic icons," exemplified by figures like Colin Kaepernick, demonstrating their ability to evoke emotional responses and drive social polarization. The second article examines the role of antagonistic audiences in magnifying negative iconization, using Greta Thunberg as a case study to reveal the conflict potential of these figures. The third article introduces the notion of "iconic extensions" using the MAGA hat …
Learning Latent Representations For Biological Molecules, Tianxiao Li
Learning Latent Representations For Biological Molecules, Tianxiao Li
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Recent progresses in machine learning have achieved phenomenal successes in the prediction of properties of biological molecules from large biological data. However, how much the models really “understand” the nature of the data remains an important question. Representation learning aims at extracting information-rich, low dimensional vector representations from complex high dimensional data. Such representations not only facilitate visualization and interpretation of the data, but also flexibly and efficiently generalized to other downstream tasks without having to re-learn universal patterns in every application. Furthermore, in generative modelling, the latent representations can be directly manipulated to direct the generation towards desired properties. …

PhD in Organizational Leadership
Recruiting and retaining student-athletes at NCAA Division I and II member institutions is difficult. However, the coaches of non-revenue-producing sport have developed communication measures to assist in successfully fielding teams of culturally unique individuals that build an ingroup culture to compete despite limiting factors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the lived experience of non-revenue-producing sporting coaches’ intercultural communication methodical variations in interactions with student-athletes as each coach adapts exchanges to serve as relationship-building elements to balance cultural norms with the acceptance of unfamiliar cultural behaviors. Relevant themes emerged from the data gathered during participant interviews, …
Evaluation Of The Hispanic Paradox: Conceptualized Through The Lens Of Generational Decision-Making Styles Of First-, Second-, And Third-Plus-Generation Hispanic Leaders, Daniel De Leon Jr
Evaluation Of The Hispanic Paradox: Conceptualized Through The Lens Of Generational Decision-Making Styles Of First-, Second-, And Third-Plus-Generation Hispanic Leaders, Daniel De Leon Jr
PhD in Organizational Leadership
The primary objective of this dissertation was first to ascertain whether there is a statistically significant effect of generation on decision-making styles and secondarily to ascertain whether there would be a statistically significant interaction effect for study participant gender and generation upon decision-making styles. The researcher hypothesized that there are quantifiable differences among Hispanic generations: first-generation Hispanic immigrants to the second and third-plus generations (Kiang et al., 2011; Pan & Pierre Lu, 2015). Decision-making styles create a framework to understand an individual's decision-making process, problem-solving matrix, and interactions with other organizations and team members (Rowe & Boulgarides, 1983). The population …

Wait, Wasn't That Code Here Before? Detecting Outdated Software Documentation, Wen Siang Tan, Markus Wagner, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Encountering outdated documentation is not a rare occurrence for developers and users in the software engineering community. To ensure that software documentation is up-to-date, developers often have to manually check whether the documentation needs to be updated whenever changes are made to the source code. In our previous work, we proposed an approach to automatically detect outdated code element references in software repositories and found that more than a quarter of the 1000 most popular projects on GitHub contained at least one outdated reference. In this paper, we present a GitHub Actions tool that builds on our previous work’s approach …
