With the advent of technology and use of latest devices, they produces voluminous data. Out of it, 80% of the data are unstructured and remaining 20% are structured and semi-structured. The produced data are in heterogeneous format and without following any standards. Among heterogeneous (structured, semi-structured and unstructured) data, textual data are nowadays used by industries for prediction and visualization of future challenges. Extracting useful information from it is really challenging for stakeholders due to lexical and semantic matching. Few studies have been solving this issue by using ontologies and semantic tools, but the main limitations of proposed work were …

Grammatical Parallelism In Aphasia: A Lesion-Symptom Mapping Study, William Matchin, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Alexandra Basilakos, Brielle Caserta Stark, Julius Fridriksson, Gregory Hickok Oct 2023

Grammatical Parallelism In Aphasia: A Lesion-Symptom Mapping Study, William Matchin, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Alexandra Basilakos, Brielle Caserta Stark, Julius Fridriksson, Gregory Hickok

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Sentence structure, or syntax, is potentially a uniquely creative aspect of the human mind. Neuropsychological experiments in the 1970s suggested parallel syntactic production and comprehension deficits in agrammatic Broca’s aphasia, thought to result from damage to syntactic mechanisms in Broca’s area in the left frontal lobe. This hypothesis was sometimes termed overarching agrammatism, converging with developments in linguistic theory concerning central syntactic mechanisms supporting language production and comprehension. However, the evidence supporting an association among receptive syntactic deficits, expressive agrammatism, and damage to frontal cortex is equivocal. In addition, the relationship among a distinct grammatical production deficit in aphasia, …

"Dima Punk" – A Conversation About Music Documentary, Subcultures And Street Language In Morocco, Stefan Pethke, Dominique Caubet

Regards

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Germany’s oldest music film festival, the Hamburg-based UNERHÖRT!, had to organize its fourteenth edition via online streamings. If there was any positive aspect about the pandemic, it consisted in granting more time to discussing the films through virtual Q&As. This article is an edited transcript of an interview in which the filmmaker, renowned sociolinguist and expert of North African Arab dialects Dominique Caubet, talked to UNERHÖRT! programme coordinator Stefan Pethke about her film Dima Punk (2019), featuring Stof, a young punk from Casablanca, Morocco. The in-depth discussion between Caubet and Pethke allowed them …

Islands, Maps, And Lontara’; Bugis Counter-Mapping On A Nineteenth-Century Map Of Nusantara, Aditya Bayu Perdana, Muhammad Buana

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article focuses on a Bugis nautical chart of Nusantara (the Malay Archipelago) from the early nineteenth century known as the Utrecht Map. There are only a few surviving copies of similar Bugis maps, all confiscated from local “pirates” during the colonial era. While graphical elements of the map undoubtedly point to prototypical European maps, careful analysis of its annotations reveals extensive linguistic modification better to reflect Bugis maritime knowledge. Not only are they completely written in Lontara’, the indigenous script of the Bugis, Euro-centric toponyms from contemporaneous maps are consistently replaced by locally derived toponyms from an oral and …

How To Rewrite A Tagalog Novel Into An English Classic: Danton Remoto’S English Translation Of Lope K. Santos’S Banaag At Sikat, Chris Cañete Rodriguez Kelly Oct 2023

How To Rewrite A Tagalog Novel Into An English Classic: Danton Remoto’S English Translation Of Lope K. Santos’S Banaag At Sikat, Chris Cañete Rodriguez Kelly

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

To appeal to a contemporary global readership, Danton Remoto in his English translation of Lope K. Santos’s Banaag at Sikat omits much of the original’s political passages. Such an approach to translation, however, hollows out elements of the original. Following the work of Annette Damayanti Lienau and Akshya Saxena, this essay understands colonial and vernacular languages as dialectically interdependent. It argues that Remoto’s abridgement of Banaag at Sikat is produced not by a refusal to translate the Tagalog of the original, but a refusal to translate the coconstitutive difference between English and Tagalog, which inheres precisely in the excessive political …

Review Of Nusantara: Heidi Shamsuddin. Nusantara: A Sea Of Tales. Singapore: Penguin Books, 2021. 223 Pages., Jay Jomar F. Quintos

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Excerpt: In the introduction to the book Nusantara: A Sea of Tales, writer Heidi Shamsuddin loosely defines “Nusantara” as an umbrella term for “countries sharing the Austronesian language such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Timor Leste, Madagascar, Oceania, as well as countries where Austronesian minorities are present such as Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan” (2). The premise of this definition compels us to imagine the topology and formation of archipelagos and islands that make up the Austronesian world. When the book collects and surveys stories and then maps out the points and turns where they intersect, it turns out to …

Kewarganegaraan Inklusif: Menempatkan Model Budaya Disabilitas Dalam Teori Multikultural Liberal Will Kymlicka, Hanandhia Lindsy Rustam, Lg. Saraswati Putri

Multikultura

Tinjauan Literatur Sistematis Terhadap Penerapan Sistem Klasifikasi Khusus Di Perpustakaan, Euis Sri Nurhayati, Nina Mayesti

Jurnal Ilmu Informasi, Perpustakaan, dan Kearsipan

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is a widely implemented classification system in most libraries. However, its usage has declined over the past four decades, and libraries are advised to undergo reclassification. Conversely, it is recognized that the implementation of specialized classification systems significantly impacts information retrieval. Therefore, the aim of this study is to elucidate the concept and methodology behind the integration of bespoke categorization frameworks within diverse libraries across Indonesia over the past decade. This study employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Context (PICOC) framework to analyze ideas, schemes, processes, and challenges …

Between Naturalistic And Theatrical: Contrast Narratives As Context-Based Space Explorations, Luthfia Hananti, Resza Riskiyanto

ARSNET

The study explores contrasting narratives and the intersections between them as the basis of context-based space exploration. Narrative approaches demonstrate possibilities of creatively expanding the design process with its values on imagination and storytelling. Yet, with the focus of stories as the basis of narrative exploration, discussion about its relation to context is often limited. This study introduces the exploration of contrast narratives by exploring the intersection between the naturalistic and theatrical conception of space presented in Tim Burton's 1990 film titled Edward Scissorhands. The close relation of a film to imagination provides possibilities for a more rich and extensive …

Shifting The Historical Narrative Of The Banda Islands; From Colonial Violence To Local Resilience, Joëlla Van Donkersgoed Oct 2023

Shifting The Historical Narrative Of The Banda Islands; From Colonial Violence To Local Resilience, Joëlla Van Donkersgoed

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

History is a representation of the past based on (written) knowledge which has been passed on from one generation to the next, with a preference given to written sources from a Eurocentric tradition. However, written sources about (former) colonial territories are a product of the colonial system in which they were produced. Acknowledging the biases in these archives, therefore, opens the way for acceptance of other forms of knowledge which were previously deemed “not objective” in Eurocentric historical disciplines. This paper presents several examples from the Banda Islands in Maluku province in Indonesia to attest that, by placing contemporary perceptions …

Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The article analyses early European knowledge about Belu, a historical region in Central Timor which, although “belonging” mostly to the Dutch colonial sphere, still had a position of cultural-ritual centrality on a Timor-wide level. Before the mid-nineteenth century, the region was, from a Dutch point of view, largely unknown in terms of political hierarchies, social structure, and economic opportunities. However, three officially commissioned authors, A.G. Brouwer, W.L. Rogge, and H.J. Grijzen, wrote extensive reports about Belu in 1849, 1865, and 1904, in which they attempted to understand local society and the opportunities they offered the colonial state. The article explores …

“His Stethoscope, His Beard, Her Breasts”: Narrative Gaps, Automaticity, And The Microfiction Of Lydia Davis, Uma Kanth, Patricia A. Dunn

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

What could be the value of a story so short that it would be called “microfiction”? According to Marc Botha, short fiction mirrors “the short attention span of modern readers,” as well as “the gaps and fragmented-ness of modern consciousness.” While microfiction is not necessarily the only form of fiction that engages with cognitive processes, as there is a rich history of describing literary studies such as poetry through the lens of cognitive science. This article explores microfiction’s structure and its relation to cognitive processes. Using 2013 Man Booker Prize-awardee Lydia Davis’s microfiction as a sample oeuvre, applied are a …

Extended Producer Responsibility And Trade Flows In Waste: The Case Of Batteries, Marco Compagnoni, Marco Grazzi, Fabio Pieri, Chiara Tomasi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the debate on international waste trade, the focus on resource efficiency and recycling has gradually begun to accompany the focus on negative environmental externalities. In this context, we examine the impact of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) on the export of waste batteries (WB). EPR is considered as a key policy for the “marketization of waste”. On the other hand, WB are a hazardous waste that also contain a high concentration of critical raw materials. As such, they are of strategic importance for the recovery of critical resources, while at the same time requiring proper environmental management. Therefore, it is …
