Self-Efficacy Of Applied Doctoral Students Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Kylie Anne George
Self-Efficacy Of Applied Doctoral Students Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Kylie Anne George
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explored the development and initial validation of a measure of doctoral student self-efficacy for students in Health Profession Training (HPT) programs. There is a gap in existing scales that measure the full spectrum of tasks that contribute to doctoral self-efficacy. The scales that do exist focus on broad self-efficacy (Chen et al., 2001) or program-specific self-efficacy in one area (Stump et al., 2012; Van Horn & Christman, 2017; Lent et al., 2003). Our purpose was to develop and provide initial norming and validity information for the Self-Efficacy of Applied Doctoral Students (SEADS) Scale. The SEADS was developed …
Environmental Toxicity Of Isoxazoline Drugs On Non-Target Species, Haley M. Cooper
Environmental Toxicity Of Isoxazoline Drugs On Non-Target Species, Haley M. Cooper
Theses and Dissertations
Lyme disease affects tens of thousands of people every year in the United States, causing serious illness and even death. It is caused by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, through infected black-legged tick bites. The range of these ticks is expanding, causing Lyme disease cases to increase. Considerable effort has been put toward research and eradication of Lyme disease, with limited success. Isoxazoline drugs, commonly used to prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs, could be dispatched in the field to keep black-legged ticks off the reservoir host of Lyme disease, the White-footed mouse. Little research has been done on …

Acaricidal Activity Of The Orally Administered Isoxazoline Drugs (Lotilaner, Fluralaner, And Afoxolaner) In White-Footed Mice Against Larval Ticks, Emily Marie Gisi
Theses and Dissertations
Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is currently the most prevalent vector borne disease in North America. With the CDC estimating almost 500,000 new cases every year, methods are needed to control the vector, the black legged tick (Ixodes scapularis). Like other tick-borne diseases, Lyme disease is zoonotic and involves tick parasitism on rodent reservoirs in the wild. The main reservoir host of Lyme disease is the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). This study aims to explore the effectiveness of a reservoir targeted control approach by the treatment of white-footed mice with oral isoxazoline class drugs. …
A Measure Predicting Treatment Outcome For Sexual Offenders, Kaitlin Alyssa Guston
A Measure Predicting Treatment Outcome For Sexual Offenders, Kaitlin Alyssa Guston
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers generally agree that treatment reduces the likelihood of sexual offender recidivism. However, studies show attrition rates of up to 85% in some treatment programs for sex offenders. Because many risk factors for recidivism and treatment attrition are the same, the present study used gold-standard risk assessments to predict which sex offenders would not complete a community treatment program. The Static-99r, Stable-2007, and URICA assessed static risk factors, dynamic needs, and responsivity to treatment for 289 sex offenders. Pre-treatment scores from the sex offenders in the sample indicated that these assessment instruments could predict treatment attrition for sex offenders in …
How Abortion Status Predicts Stigmatizing Beliefs: Measuring Enacted Stigma Using The Stereotype Content Model, Jenna Nichole Laurin
How Abortion Status Predicts Stigmatizing Beliefs: Measuring Enacted Stigma Using The Stereotype Content Model, Jenna Nichole Laurin
Theses and Dissertations
Enacted stigma consists of active discrimination or negative treatment towards an individual who has received an abortion. Further, stereotypes of individuals typically fit within perceptions of competence and warmth, however these stereotypes have not been measured about women who have received an abortion despite the fact that they can indicate stigmatizing beliefs. Additionally, enacted stigma may present differently between men and women. The purpose of the current study was to measure perceptions of competence and warmth as a form of stigma about women with and without a history of abortion, as well as women who considered an abortion but did …
Core Values In Higher Education: Students, Faculty, Staff, And Administrator Alignment At A Midwestern Research University, Rodney Deshan Lewis
Core Values In Higher Education: Students, Faculty, Staff, And Administrator Alignment At A Midwestern Research University, Rodney Deshan Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
A growing body of research exists on core values. However, limited scholarly research exists on core values in higher education institutions that operate in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. And yet, society entrusts higher education with our nation’s most important resource—our future leaders. University adopted core values serve as guideposts for institution stakeholders. Core values are important for an organization’s identity by providing concise and powerful guidelines for collective stakeholder action. Core values provide a true north values vector, especially when ambiguity and uncertainty exist. This, in turn, helps increase judgement and decision-making skills that are clearly aligned …

Analysis Of Albedo As A Predictor Of Snow And Glacier Ice Changes Over Time: A Case Study Of The Wind River Range, Wyoming, Nana Yaw Owusu-Amponsah
Theses and Dissertations
Changes that are occurring on glaciers have received immense attention globally as well as in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Glaciers in the Wind River Range have experienced accelerated thinning which has been mostly attributed to increased local and global temperatures by a number of authors. This research seeks to examine the impacts of albedo on glacier thinning and shrinkage in the Wind River Range since there has been little research done in that regard. The study used the green and the near infrared bands of the 30m resolution Landsat imagery to calculate albedo. Temperature and precipitation data were also …
Teachers' Perspectives On Transformational Leadership, Kelsey Rae Peltier
Teachers' Perspectives On Transformational Leadership, Kelsey Rae Peltier
Theses and Dissertations
School leaders aim for steady progress and yearly gains. In most cases, this means modifications must be made throughout the school, particularly within the classroom. If teachers are unprepared or disengaged in the planning process, a program’s success might be at risk. Consideration of teacher needs will be influential in instructional performance and will also have a favorable impact on student achievement. With transformational leadership and its eagerness to include teacher input, reform will surely flourish. Its presence has been reviewed in a quantitative study with participants who currently have a general education position in the same school. An online …

Buckling Behavior Of Metallic Thin-Walled Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under Static Loading, Fnu Tabish
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to estimate and improve the buckling strength of the cylindrical storage tanks under static loadings. Initially, for the verification of the overall performance of the numerical modeling approach; a computational analysis was conducted to calculate the linear buckling behaviour of empty cylindrical shells with different H/D and D/t ratios using ANSYS workbench 2021. Results revealed that the FE models accurately predict static critical buckling stress which is mainly depends on the D/t ratio. The solution of the buckling analysis provides multiple buckling mode shapes and critically buckling load values. Those mode shapes (eigenvectors) can indicate the expected …
Real-Time Monitoring And Controlling Feedstock Properties Fluctuations In Solid Fuel-Fired Energy Conversion Systems, David John Stadem
Real-Time Monitoring And Controlling Feedstock Properties Fluctuations In Solid Fuel-Fired Energy Conversion Systems, David John Stadem
Theses and Dissertations
Fluctuations in feedstock properties significantly impact the reliability, efficiency, and emissions of energy conversion systems. The behavior of ash-forming impurities in solid feedstocks such as coal, biomass, petroleum coke, and municipal solid waste is a perennial challenge in energy generation. The transition to power plants with dynamic ramping capabilities as well as net-zero or negative carbon emissions is hampered in part by the impacts of ash-forming impurities on systems such as gasifiers, combustors, gas cleanup, and carbon capture systems. Many ash-related events that disrupt operations are caused by fluctuations in the properties of the feedstock. Online feedstock properties monitoring systems have …

Sustainability has become a critical component of materials research. Plastic disposal is a major problem facing us. Along with recycling, bioplastics have emerged as a potential solution. However, bioplastics have only found limited applications because of their weak mechanical properties. Hence numerous research is being done in the application of reinforcement additives in bioplastics to develop bioplastic composites or blends with improved properties. This study explores using renewable and biodegradable natural fibers as well as agricultural biomass wastes as reinforcement additives to enhance the properties of bioplastics. This also provides the opportunity to valorize agricultural biomass wastes. Solvent casting is …
Plant Composition And Turnover In Great Plains Conservation Reserve Program Grasslands, Lydia M. Westberg
Plant Composition And Turnover In Great Plains Conservation Reserve Program Grasslands, Lydia M. Westberg
Theses and Dissertations
The Conservation Reserve Program supports grassland reconstruction practices that vary in the number (richness) and identity of species added to enrolled sites. Although the program is administered at the federal level, the methods and species pools used to reconstruct these grasslands have changed over time and vary across the United States. Additionally, while the goal is to augment site species pools with desired species, there is some question as to what extent the prescribed practices result in a diverse species pool over the long term given the immense non-native propagule pressure that can exist on these sites. Unfortunately, no large-scale …

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is the optic nerve injury secondary to brain trauma leading to visual impairment and vision loss. Current clinical visual function assessments often fail to detect TON due to slow disease progression and clinically silent lesions resulting in potentially delayed or missed treatment in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: Diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) is a novel imaging modality that can potentially fill this diagnostic gap. Twenty-two, 16-week-old, male mice were equally divided into a sham or TBI (induced by moderate Closed-Head Impact Model of Engineered Rotational Acceleration device) group. Briefly, mice were anesthetized …

Accessible, low-cost intervention options are necessary to address the rise in mental health problems among college students. Digital guided self-help, or coached, programs have been developed to provide such services, with many commercially available. As such, there are a large and growing number of individuals coaching these programs. However, an unmet need is to evaluate and assess best practices for training and supervising individuals in these positions. To this end, we describe how we recruited, trained, and supervised coaches as part of a large randomized controlled trial using a widely available digital commercial platform. Coaches were trained to provide digital …

Solute carrier (SLC) transporters are membrane-bound proteins that facilitate nutrient transport, and the movement across cellular membranes of various substrates ranging from ions to amino acids, metabolites and drugs. Recently, SLCs have gained increased attention due to their functional linkage to innate immunological processes such as the clearance of dead cells and anti-microbial defense. Further, the druggable nature of these transporters provides unique opportunities for improving outcomes in different immunological diseases. Although the SLCs represent the largest group of transporters and are often identified as significant hits in omics data sets, their role in immunology has been insufficiently explored. This …

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is a water channel protein that links the astrocytic endfeet to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and regulates water and potassium homeostasis in the brain, as well as the glymphatic clearance of waste products that would otherwise potentiate neurological diseases. Recently, translational readthrough was shown to generate a C-terminally extended variant of AQP4, known as AQP4x, which preferentially localizes around the BBB through interaction with the scaffolding protein α-syntrophin, and loss of AQP4x disrupts waste clearance from the brain. To investigate the function of AQP4x, we generated a novel AQP4 mouse line (AllX) to increase relative levels of the …

Plastin-3 (PLS3) is a calcium-sensitive actin-bundling protein that has recently been linked to the development of childhood-onset osteoporosis. Clinical data suggest that PLS3 mutations lead to a defect in osteoblast function, however the underlying mechanism remains elusive. To investigate the role of PLS3 in bone mineralization, we generated MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells that are stably depleted of PLS3. Analysis of osteogenic differentiation of control and PLS3 knockdown (PLS3 KD) cells showed that depletion of PLS3 does not alter the first stage of osteoblast mineralization in which a collagen matrix is deposited, but severely affects the subsequent mineralization of that matrix. During …

A substantial body of evidence points to the heritability of dietary preferences. While vegetarianism has been practiced for millennia in various societies, its practitioners remain a small minority of people worldwide, and the role of genetics in choosing a vegetarian diet is not well understood. Dietary choices involve an interplay between the physiologic effects of dietary items, their metabolism, and taste perception, all of which are strongly influenced by genetics. In this study, we used a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify loci associated with strict vegetarianism in UK Biobank participants. Comparing 5,324 strict vegetarians to 329,455 controls, we identified …

Undernutrition during pregnancy in adolescence confers a high risk of maternal morbidity and adverse birth outcomes, particularly in low-resource settings. In a secondary analysis, we hypothesized that younger undernourished pregnant adolescents (<18 years) would benefit more than undernourished pregnant adults (>20 years) from the intervention of supplementary food and anti-infective treatments. The original trial in Sierra Leone enrolled 236 younger adolescents (<18 years), 454 older adolescents (aged 18-19 years), and 741 adults (≥20 years), all with a mid-upper arm circumference ≤23 cm. Younger adolescents had lower final fundal height as well as smaller newborns (-0.3 kg; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.3, -0.2; p < 0.001) and shorter newborns (-1.1 cm; 95% CI, -1.5, -0.7; p < 0.001) than adults. The intervention's effect varied significantly between maternal age groups: adults benefited more than younger adolescents with respect to newborn birth weight (difference in difference, 166 g; 95% CI, 26, 306; interaction p = 0.02), birth length (difference in difference, 7.4 mm; 95% CI, 0.1, 14.8; interaction p = 0.047), and risk for low birth weight (<2.5 kg) (interaction p = 0.019). The differences in response persisted despite adjustments for maternal anthropometry, the number of prior pregnancies, and human immunodeficiency virus status. Older adolescents similarly benefited more than younger adolescents, though differences did not reach statistical significance. In conclusion, newborns born to younger adolescent mothers had worse outcomes than those born to adult mothers, and adults and their newborns benefited more from the intervention than younger adolescents.

BACKGROUND: While technology advances have increased the popularity of remote interventions in underserved and rural cancer communities, less is understood about technology access and preferences for home-based physical activity programs in this cancer survivor population.
PURPOSE: To determine access, preferences, and needs, for a home-based physical activity program in rural cancer survivors.
METHODS: A Qualtrics Research Panel was recruited to survey adults with cancer across the United States. Participants self-reported demographics, cancer characteristics, technology access and usage, and preferences for a home-based physical activity program. The Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) assessed current levels of physical activity. Descriptive statistics …

BACKGROUND: In response to hypoxia, tumor cells undergo transcriptional reprogramming including upregulation of carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX, a metalloenzyme that maintains acid-base balance. CAIX overexpression has been shown to correlate with poor prognosis in various cancers, but the role of this CA isoform in hepatoblastoma (HB) has not been examined.
METHODS: We surveyed the expression of CAIX in HB specimens and assessed the impact of SLC-0111, a CAIX inhibitor, on cultured HB cells in normoxic and hypoxic conditions.
RESULTS: CAIX immunoreactivity was detected in 15 out of 21 archival pathology HB specimens. The CAIX-positive cells clustered in the middle of …
